Hello Calufrax! I'm [personal profile] dbskyler. Here are some more of my favorite stories from the Teaspoon, which I am very excited to rec to you!

Story: Gearbox (The Won't Miss a Piece Remix)
Author: neveralarch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6103
Author's Summary: “How does the TARDIS work?” asks Ace.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Seventh Doctor, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, First Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Herriot, Second Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Third Doctor, Romana II, Fourth Doctor, Erimem, Fifth Doctor, Melanie Bush, Sixth Doctor, Hex Schofield.
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a work of brilliance, and I really mean that. The structure of it -- interspersing scenes between the Seventh Doctor and Ace with scenes between earlier Doctors and their companions -- is very well done, and the writing is top-notch, but all of that is almost irrelevant once you come to realize the central conceit of the fic, which is truly a thing of marvelous beauty. If you don't know all the Doctors or companions involved, don't worry, because this is a fic where knowing the characters isn't important (I don't know them all either). All you really need to know about is the TARDIS -- and you might just pick up a new piece of fanon by the end.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it, happy sixth night of Hanukkah to those who celebrate it, and happy Doctor Who Christmas Special Day to us all! As my last rec, I bring you some holiday fluff:

Story: Christmas in the TARDIS
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 639
Author's Summary: A very merry Christmas for Romana and the Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor/Romana II
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'll be honest with you. I'm generally not a fan of "characters celebrate Christmas" fic, but this is such a perfect piece of sweet, non-sappy, in-character Doctor/Romana fluff, it completely won me over. If you love Christmas fic, you're bound to love this; and if you don't, try it anyway, because it just might win you over, too.

Story: Wood and Cardboard
Author: srmcd1
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5802
Author's Summary: Crossover with Calvin and Hobbes. A wagon ride in the forest is interrupted by a strange man in a bow tie looking for his time machine. Thank goodness these two have one of their own.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Calvin and Hobbes from the comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes"
Warnings: None

Recced because: If you're familiar with Calvin and Hobbes, you're probably already thinking what a genius idea it is to have them meet the Eleventh Doctor. Because yes, it is a genius idea, and this fic does not disappoint. If you're not familiar with Calvin and Hobbes, here's what you need to know: Calvin is a six-year-old boy with a very active imagination, whose fantasy life is real to him. He can talk to his stuffed tiger (Hobbes), and he can make a cardboard box into a string of different inventions including, incidentally, a time machine. So what could be better than having a six-year-old with a cardboard time machine meet up with the Eleventh Doctor, the one adult in the whole universe who would take him at face value, and whose own time machine is made of wood?

Story: Inspiration
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2794
Author's Summary: Endurance is its own kind of heroism.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Tenth Doctor, Nyssa (in background)
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a wonderful, uplifting fic that is full of marvelous ingredients. First off, it's an amazing piece of world-building, with a very well-drawn original character. Second, Martha gets to use her medical skills to help combat a plague. Third, Nyssa, a companion of the Fifth Doctor, gets an important mention. But best of all, it's a fic about heroism, just as Doctor Who is a show about heroism. The Doctor swoops in, fixes things, and leaves, but others stay and slog, and become heroes by dint of their endurance. As made plain in this fic, these latter types of heroes can be the most inspiring of all.

Story: Conserved Relationships in the Sum over Histories
Author: Lurky McLurklurk
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1826
Author's Summary: Rani/Maria futurefic. Or one-of-many-possible-futures fic, anyway. (Also background Luke/Clyde.)
Characters/Pairings: Rani Chandra/Maria Jackson
Warnings: None

Recced because: There's a certain genre of fic out there that probably has a specific term to describe it, but since I don't know the term, I'll call it "let's pair these two characters who never met in canon and see what happens" fic. At first glance, this may seem like one of those fics. But it's not. Or rather, it is, but it's also much, much more.

You see, in Sarah Jane Adventures canon, both Rani and Maria encountered a puzzle-box that keeps people from experiencing the effects of changes in the timeline. Lurky McLurklurk takes that fact and runs with it, telling a tale of what it's like to live your life while around you timelines change, and your memories change with them, but still you're somehow aware of what's going on. The story is very well written, and absolutely fascinating to read, but the icing on the cake is the beautiful portrayal of the Rani/Maria romance (who are both adults in the fic). In the end, this is a story of truly timeless love, and it makes me sad that Rani and Maria never did properly meet in canon. But at least we have this fanfic.

Story: Hey, Macarena!
Author: Allonym
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 468
Author's Summary: This was a moment she would always remember. *Spoilers* for The Girl Who Waited
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond/Rory Williams
Warnings: None

Recced because: I love fics that give you the background for something that happened in an episode, especially when the outcome is as marvelous as this. In "The Girl Who Waited," we found out that Amy has an important memory of the first time she and Rory kissed, but for some bizarre reason, she calls the memory "Macarena." I mean, what? You'd think it was a joke, but it's a poignant scene, except of course for the mention of the Macarena, that cheesy dance we'd all rather forget. In this fic, Allonym takes on the challenge and gives us the story behind the Macarena moment, then knocks it out of the park. Who knew that a fic about the Macarena could be so special, and beautiful, and absolutely perfect?

It's the first night of Hanukkah here tonight, which means it might already be Hanukkah for you, dear Calufrax reader, or else it's going to be Hanukkah, or the first night is already over depending on where you are in the world and, um, when you read this. Anyway, if you celebrate it, Happy Hanukkah! (Or Chanukkah, Chanukah, etc. -- they're all correct, as they're just various ways of putting Hebrew into our alphabet.) Today I bring you the gift of an appropriately holiday-themed fic:

Story: On Ill Spaceships and Chanukkah Miracles
Author: pitry
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 808
Author's Summary: "And this, Donna, is why I never park the Tardis on Earth when it's in need of repairs, ever again."
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, the TARDIS
Warnings: If you're very religious, you might find this irreverent.

Recced because: There isn't much Hanukkah-themed Doctor Who fic out there, but fortunately we have this, which is absolutely wonderful; light and fun and perfect for getting into a holiday mood. But first, for those who don't know the story of Hanukkah, a little background: it's the commemoration of a time when, after a military victory and rededication of a temple, oil that should have lasted for only one day miraculously lasted for eight days instead. According to this fic, the Doctor just may have had a little something to do with that miracle, albeit unintentionally. Which would be just like him, too.

Hello, I'm dbskyler, your reccer for the week. I'm looking forward to sharing some more of my favorite stories with you, and I hope you find at least one new story you enjoy!

Story: Time and Relatives in Space
Author: nostalgia
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1179
Author's Summary: The awfulness of being Amelia Song, aged 14.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor/River Song, Amelia Song (OC)
Warnings: Spoilers through the finale of S6

Recced because: There's nothing better than starting off a week with humor, so here is a story that is just marvelous fun from start to finish. Amelia Song, daughter of the Eleventh Doctor and River Song, is a wonderfully surly teenager with two parents who are surprised by her existence. The author sets up the ridiculous situation and then never misses a target or a joke, whether that target is parenthood, teenager-hood, or the timey-wimeyness of Series 6. Enjoy.

Story: If It's Not Broken
Author: thirty2flavors
Rating: All Ages (I would call it PG, or possibly PG-13)
Word Count: 1045
Author's Summary: Five things that didn't happen after the Doctor left Rose in Journey's End.
Characters/Pairings: Duplicate Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler (some vignettes have them paired, and some vignettes don't)
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: The author presents five possible scenarios for what happened after the TARDIS left that beach in Norway at the end of "Journey's End," and they're all hysterically funny. Really good satire is hard to pull off, but thirty2flavors shows us how it's done.
[identity profile] dbskyler.livejournal.com
It's almost time for the S6 premiere! Here's the perfect fic to read while you're counting down the hours:

Story: Make Believe
Author: musedepandora
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3269
Author's Summary: It didn't end in The Library. For either of them. (Eleven/River, Amy. Spoilers through Pandorica)
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor/River Song, Amy Pond
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a simple but brilliant premise: the Doctor sometimes takes the TARDIS back to orbit The Library so he can have conversations with the River he left there in the computer. The fic is a truly fascinating character study of the Doctor and River, and their very complex relationship with each other. River's status as a dead hologram is not shied away from, nor is the Doctor's fundamental discomfort around her -- and yet it completely works. The characterization is amazing, and the execution is perfect.

Story: Rosemary for Remembrance
Author: Nancy Brown
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 322
Author's Summary: The universe is sending her flowers, and it's got awful timing.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble
Warnings: None

Recced because: Donna is happily living her life with Shaun, except for one thing: every so often, she receives flowers, and she doesn't know who they're from. This fic was written in only 15 minutes, and yet I don't think it can be improved upon. It's a perfect length, and it ends at exactly the right time, in exactly the right way. Beware of the last line, because it will knock the wind right out of you.

Try it out. )

I thought we could all use something light-hearted today, and slightly whimsical. Fortunately I have just the fic:

Story: One Long Night
Author: Amy Wolf
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1538
Author's Summary: The Doctor attempts to solve a problem of storage space. Complications ensue.
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Victoria Waterfield
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's the Second Doctor, with Jamie and Victoria! Yes, that's practically reason enough. But there's more. The Doctor goes shopping! There's IKEA furniture! And best of all, there's a wonderful tie-in with a piece of Ninth Doctor canon, and the origin of a tool that makes Doctor Who history. Read and enjoy.

To tempt you. )

Tomorrow I'll resume reccing the fics I originally planned to rec this week, but before I do, I have one quick "bonus" rec that seems particularly appropriate to share right now -- a short (144-word) poem about Sarah Jane:

Story: She Was Always
Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 144
Author's Summary: The Doctor does not often lend himself to poetry, but then, there isn't often someone quite this special.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, the Doctor
Warnings: Might make you cry.

Recced because: Primsong is one of those talented authors who can write good fanfic and good poetry. I've always thought this poem was gorgeous, but now with the loss of Lis Sladen, it's become especially poignant.
[identity profile] dbskyler.livejournal.com
Yesterday we lost a member of the Doctor Who family: the lovely Elisabeth Sladen, who portrayed Sarah Jane Smith, one of the most popular characters in the history of the Whoniverse. In light of this sad event, I tried to think of what kind of fic I myself would want to read today, and came up with the choice below. It's one of the first fics I ever read on Teaspoon, and it's still an all-time favorite of mine. It brings me comfort today, and I hope it does the same for you:

Story: The Stardust Trail Leading Back to You
Author: queenofhearts
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1499
Author's Summary: The night sky exploded with diamonds; a sea of white hot sparks that hung in the air for a split second, motionless.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, Eighth Doctor, Maria Jackson, Luke Smith, Clyde Langer
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Eighth Doctor happens across Sarah Jane, who is watching fireworks with Maria, Luke and Clyde. (Although the teens appear in the fic, no knowledge of Sarah Jane Adventures is needed -- I hadn't seen the show when I first read this.) The writing is descriptive and lyrical, weaving the scene and then immersing us in it until we're carried along with the characters, enjoying their reunion. But what really sets this fic apart is the ending, as the author steps back and leaves the scene to the Doctor and Sarah, and to them alone. All we know is that whatever happened, it made the Doctor happy. We're left to invent the details, but rather than being frustrating, the ambiguity makes it a perfect little moment, residing forever within our imaginations.

Story: The Ruins Are Wild
Author: glassbomb
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1279
Author's Summary: “I feel like a goddess right now.” She waves a hand. “I banish you to… to the… farthest corner of the universe. Don’t you dare say that you’ve been there and it’s nice.”
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond
Warnings: None

Recced because: There's a song the Doctor can't remember, although he knows it begins with "A pinwheel's a promise." There's a fiance Amy can't remember, but the Doctor remembers him all too well. He takes her to a planet that once held a beautiful temple, and watches her play amongst the ruins. The tone of the fic is more wistful than sad, but it lingers, and the longer you think about it, the more heartbreaking it becomes.

Hi, I'm dbskyler, your reccer for the week. I'll be reccing a mix of genres and characters, including some Eleven!fic in honor of the S6 premiere on Saturday, but as today is David Tennant's 40th birthday, I had to start off with Ten!fic:

Story: Baby You Can Drive My Car
Author: Roach Patrol
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2318
Author's Summary: This is the first day of the rest of Yana's life. (Utopia AU, Ten/Simm!Yana)
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Professor Yana
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is an AU fic with a fascinating premise: what if Professor Yana had never opened the watch? What if he had regenerated, and become a Time Lord again, but had never regained his memory or his identity as the Master?

Well, in some ways the answer is obvious: the Doctor and Yana would end up traveling the universe together, and that is indeed where this fic starts off. Yana has all the boyish enthusiasm here that he showed in "Utopia," and he's very recognizable as Yana, but the fic has an undercurrent that makes it far more than a pleasant bit of fluff. Neither the Doctor nor we can ever quite forget that somewhere inside this affable companion, the Master is waiting to come out.

Story: Thirteen Conversations About One Thing
Author: Amy Wolf
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6792
Author's Summary: "I'm half-human, on my mother's side."
Characters/Pairings: Doctors 1-13, Susan, Victoria, Sarah Jane, Romana II, Tegan, Peri, Ace, Grace, Jackie, Martha, Original Companions
Warnings: None

Recced because: "I'm half-human, on my mother's side." That one little line from the TVM is arguably the most hated piece of dialogue in the history of the show. But what if it were true? This fic explores what that might mean for the Doctor and his relationships with humans, using the device of showing thirteen different conversations where thirteen Doctors touch upon -- or just manage to avoid touching upon -- the subject. It's a skillful exploration, dripping with nicely drawn characterizations, and the ending is wonderful.

Story: Incident in a Parisian Cafe
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2220
Author's Summary: When deciding how to kill time during a night out adventuring in Paris, asking yourself "what would James Bond do?" is probably the wrong approach. Missing scene from City of Death (Romana/Duggan).
Characters/Pairings: Romana II/Duggan
Warnings: None

Recced because: Any author who manages to take a somewhat cracky premise, carry it through and create a fic that is both funny and enjoyable has written a good fic. Any author who manages to do all that, and somehow keep everyone completely in character throughout, has written a great fic. And that's what this is: a great fic that is both very funny and weirdly plausible. In a missing scene from "City of Death," Romana and Duggan "do it," but it's the conversation that follows their brief liaison that is absolutely priceless.

Story: A List of the Lost
Author: aralias
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3889
Author's Summary: Five times the fifth Doctor was alone with one of his companions, each time after losing someone else.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor, Adric, Nyssa, Tegan, Turlough, Peri
Warnings: References to character death

Recced because: The Fifth Doctor traveled with a lot of companions, and he traveled with a lot of companions who also traveled with each other. But no one travels with the Doctor forever. In a series of vignettes, this fic explores each companion's reaction to the loss of someone, and in so doing, explores how each companion sees his or her own relationship to the Doctor. Taken individually, the vignettes are a wonderful series of character studies; added together, they are a study on the Doctor himself, and an insightful look into the Doctor/companion relationship.

Story: The Further Adventures of Handy the Wonder Clone
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1003
Author's Summary: Today I found the Dimension Cannon in a cupboard. Set it on fire. Well, better safe than sorry.
Characters/Pairings: Duplicate Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler
Warnings: None

Recced because: Because it's crack!fic. Because it's glorious crack!fic. Because it's glorious crack!fic written by Netgirl_y2k, who writes the most glorious of the glorious crack!fic there is.

The fic is written in the form of a diary, telling the tale of how Handy adjusts to his new life in Pete's World. He's having a tough time, because he can't find any alien invasions to foil. Fortunately, the Doctor is very good at problem-solving.

Story: Maybe It's Just North Dakota
Author: MinervaFan
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 509
Author's Summary: On what once was Earth, Sarah and Four spend a quiet moment together contemplating the sunset.
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor/Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane watch the sun set over what used to be North Dakota. That's the whole thing, really, but the way it's rendered is absolutely gorgeous. It's nothing but a moment, but that moment is painted with such vivid description and emotional resonance, you can't help but experience it with the characters. And what more could you ask for than the chance to experience a sunset with Four and Sarah Jane?

Story: When Dex was Three
Author: Azriona
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5453
Author's Summary: Dex Tyler is three years old, and life is good. And then, one day, with absolutely no warning whatsoever (if Dex Tyler is to be believed), it isn’t. A one-shot in the Crossroads series, though can be read very well on its own.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler, Ianto Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, Martha Jones, Original Companion
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a story told from the point of view of Dex Tyler, three-year-old son of the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler. It's part of a larger set of stories but it can be read as a stand-alone, as no prior knowledge of the series is needed. What I love about this fic is how deftly the tale is told, with a strong respect for how seriously children take the world around them. Although filled with moments that are fluffy and warmly humorous, the fic manages to create an underlying and realistic tension, and it explores some very deep themes about loneliness and the meaning of family. As for Dex himself, he is an utterly charming original character who deserves to have his own series someday.

Hello! I'm [personal profile] dbskyler, your reccer for the week. I've again tried to mix things up by selecting a range of different genres and eras, so the only thing these stories have in common with each other is that they are among my favorites. I hope that some of them become your favorites, too!

Story: Turning and Turning
Author: eponymous_rose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3692
Author's Summary: Things changed. Rory stayed the same. (Contains spoilers for the series five finale.)
Characters/Pairings: Rory Williams
Warnings: None

Recced because: There's been more than one fic about Rory's two thousand-year-long vigil, but none more gorgeous than this. It's about what it's like to wait, and to learn patience in the waiting. It's about the discovery of the things in life that are really important. It's about Rory. And in the end, it's a love story: a story about Rory's love for Amy, who is waiting for him just as much as he is waiting for her.

It's been a pleasure, but the end of the week has come. Thank you all, and here is something fun to go out on:

Story: One Does Not Simply Materialize Into Middle Earth . . .
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1803
Author's Summary: A silly little crossover ficlet with "Lord of the Rings", if the Doctor found the ring rather than Frodo and goes to the Elrond Council Meeting. Hilarity, naturally, ensues.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones, the Council of Elrond from "The Fellowship of the Ring"
Warnings: None

Recced because: You mean the title's not enough? Okay, how about this, then: Doctor Who is a show that is incredibly easy to use in a crossover -- the Doctor can go anywhere in time and space, after all -- and also incredibly difficult to use in a crossover, because more often than not, the tone of what's being crossed doesn't match up with the show, and the author has to deal with that somehow. This story takes a natural clash of tone between Doctor Who and Lord of the Rings and doesn't just deal with it, it revels in it. Neil Simon once said about "The Odd Couple" that its humor was entirely character-driven, as there wasn't a single joke in the entire play. The same is true of this story. It's crack that isn't crack at all, because while it's hilariously funny, everyone -- the Doctor, Martha, Elrond, Gandalf, everyone -- is completely, utterly in character throughout. And yes, that's exactly why this is so funny, and such a brilliant crossover.

Story: Time Present and Time Past
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3694
Author's Summary: The Doctor stops in on Brighton beach, and meets an old friend under very unusual circumstances.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Romana II
Warnings: None.

Recced because: To be honest, I'm not sure if this was jossed by "End of Time" or not (I think it's up for debate), but either way, this story is amazing. Set sometime after "Journey's End," the Tenth Doctor stops by Brighton beach and impossibly comes across Romana. What happens next is basically just a conversation, but what a conversation it is -- all about life, and death, and the Time War, and what it means to know that your time is coming to an end. It's also gorgeously written, and the last line is especially wonderful.

Story: Scenes from the Domestic Front
Author: ellisbelle
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 727
Author's Summary: The Doctor and Sarah are stranded in WWII era London.
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor/Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is such a unique story in so many ways. It's from the LJ cliché-swap ficathon, where instead of the Tenth Doctor and Martha getting stuck in 1969, the Fourth Doctor and Sarah get stuck in London during WWII. But that's just the outer wrapping. The writing is both sparse and layered, and it doesn't just tell a story, it sets a mood, and immerses the reader in it. Every word seems carefully chosen and every nuance felt. Go give it a try, and let it capture you.

After yesterday's rec, it's time to get back to humor:

Story: A Complicated Event in Time and Space
Author: gnossienne_nr1
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1213
Author's Summary: Takes place after Journey's End. Donna starts remembering, and since the Doctor isn't around to do any good, she gets to work fixing her brain herself with a fork, a toaster and a satellite dish.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, the Tenth Doctor.
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is another story that has been jossed by on-screen events, but for that reason alone some people will find it especially well worth the read. Donna fixes her own brain, then goes off to be her fantastic part-human, part-Time Lord, all-Donna self. It's funny, it's irreverent, and it's simply a joy, all the way through.

Story: Last One Out
Author: joonscribble
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 10,787
Author's Summary: The years pass with Owen watching. Spoilers through "A Day in the Death."
Characters/Pairings: Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato, Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones, Gwen Cooper, Martha Jones
Warnings: Character death

Recced because: Thoroughly AU now, this story starts from where we were left after Torchwood's "A Day in the Death" and takes us to its logical conclusion: aside from immortal Jack, the person who seems slated to be the last surviving member of the team is Owen. The story takes place over many years, with Owen going on as the others age and eventually die, until he and Jack are the last ones left. And that's when a twist shifts the story from good to utterly brilliant, and it's all just simultaneously heartbreaking and beautiful. What I find most amazing about this fic, though, is that Owen is faithfully portrayed as the complete and utter prat he was back then in the show, and yet he also is an ultimately sympathetic character. So sympathetic, in fact, that you might just find yourself crying for him at the end. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Story: Paternity
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1169
Author's Summary: The Doctor has a very important and obvious question for Sarah Jane.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Clyde Langer
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Tenth Doctor crosses over to the Sarah Jane Adventures to ask Sarah an obvious question, and it's just so much cracky fun. The story is very accessible even if you've never seen SJA, but if you are a fan of the show, you'll have extra appreciation for what happens at the end.

Hello everyone! I'm [personal profile] dbskyler, your reccer for the week, and I'm excited to be back again to share more of my favorite stories with you. To start us off, here's a great story for a Monday:

Story: In the Garden
Author: RobinC
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2039
Author's Summary: How do you thank someone for saving the world -- again? Minor spoilers for Planet of the Dead.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Other Character
Warnings: None

Recced because: This fic takes what is essentially a throwaway line from "Planet of the Dead" and tells us the story behind it. (However, knowledge of the throwaway line is not needed, nor are there any real spoilers.) The central question addressed in the fic is a simple one: the Doctor deserves to be thanked for all the times he has saved the world, but what could possibly serve as an appropriate expression of gratitude? On one level this fic is pure fluff -- sweet and joyous fluff -- but there's another level here, one that delves into just who the Doctor is and how he is seen by others. The combination is a thoughtful and uplifting tale that is sure to leave you with a smile on your face.

Story: Never Been Kissed
Author: digitalfletch

Word Count: 971
Author's Summary: Swapping stories with some mates leads Sarah to an unexpected discovery.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Jack Harkness, Donna Noble, Martha Jones, Rose Tyler
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's always fun to get companions of the Doctor together, and what could be more convenient than when an episode does it for you? Written before "Journey's End" aired and now slightly AU, this story has Sarah, Jack, Donna, Martha and Rose all going off to a pub with the Doctor to celebrate their saving of the Earth. The companions are swapping stories of their travels when a little fact comes out, one small detail that sets Sarah apart -- she alone, out of all of them, has never been kissed by the Doctor. It's funny, it's fluffy, and it's well-written; sweet without being sappy.

Story: Like Clockwork
Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 283
Author's Summary: He's going to be here a long, long time.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: When I think of the Third Doctor, I think of him running around with all the marvelous people of UNIT, helping them defend the Earth from the never-ending crop of alien invaders. What I often forget, though, is why he wound up working as UNIT's scientific advisor in the first place: because he was exiled, because his TARDIS was forcibly broken, and because his mind was altered to deny him the knowledge he needed to fix it, knowledge that he used to have. This story skillfully shows those feelings of exile and loss in less than 300 words, and it's heartbreaking. No matter how many times I read this story, the emotional impact of it never lessens.

Story: Memories Are Killing
Author: rollingstone
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1977
Author's Summary: Shortly after the Time War, the Doctor decides to visit an old friend.
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: This was one of the first stories I read on Teaspoon, and it remains one of my favorites. The newly regenerated Ninth Doctor needs to say goodbye to his former, more carefree life, and so he spies on an old and very dear friend, Sarah Jane (who is pre-School Reunion when he finds her). The story is poignant, perfectly capturing the Doctor's feelings of loneliness and loss, and it leaves a bit of an ache -- but it's a good ache.

Story: Romantic (With a Lowercase R)
Author: thirty2flavors
Rating: Author says Teen, but I'd say All Ages (PG, but not PG-13 if you're familiar with those ratings)
Word Count: 3079
Author's Summary: Besides, Rose was quite certain if there’d ever been a human celebration crafted to make the Doctor uncomfortable, it was probably Valentine’s Day. Rose held no delusions about him being the sort to enjoy candlelit dinners or long talks about feelings – he was, after all, still the man who’d said “quite right too”.
Characters/Pairings: The Duplicate Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler, Donna Noble (Pete's World version), Jake Simmonds
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Duplicate Tenth Doctor is a fascinating character, and there are many excellent fics out there that explore how he deals with learning to live as a human. Some of them are moving, some of them are thought-provoking, and some of them, like this one, are just plain fun. The author quickly and deftly establishes a scenario where the Doctor is in a stable relationship with Rose and best friends with alt!Donna, then sets up the premise: it's Valentine's Day. The Doctor is, of course, clueless. What follows is perfectly in character all the way around -- Donna in particular is wonderful -- and it's an absolute joy to read. The learning-to-be-human Doctor and Valentine's Day? Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Story: Within, the Enemy
Author: AstroGirl
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2634
Author's Summary: An AU branching off from the TV movie, in which the Master succeeds in taking over the Doctor's body.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, the Master, Jo Grant
Warnings: None

Recced because: Assume the Master takes over the Doctor's body and inhabits it as his own. What happens next? This is an AU from the TV movie and thus an Eighth Doctor story, but it can be fully appreciated by anyone who's acquainted with the Master, including readers only familiar with New Who. (There's a brief moment with Josephine Jones -- nee Grant -- but all you need to know is that she is a former companion of the Doctor. There, now you know it.) The premise of the story allows for a fascinating exploration of the Doctor, the Master, and the Doctor/Master relationship, and the author doesn't disappoint, forging fearlessly ahead with a gripping and thought-provoking tale. Perhaps the author's most amazing accomplishment is that the plot is full of surprises, but at the very end there is a sense that everything that happened was in fact inevitable. And speaking of the end, there are no words to convey its utter brilliance. But you'll have time to try to think of some, because it's an ending that will stay with you for long after you've finished reading.

Story: A Row (Or Two)
Author: vvj5
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1353
Author's Summary: On the usefulness of knitting in an emergency.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe
Warnings: None

Recced because: Six and Evelyn are locked in a cell and have a discussion about escaping and knitting (not necessarily in that order). Evelyn is a character from the Big Finish audios, and I have a confession to make: I have never heard a single one of those audios. But not only do I love this fic, it has made me want to go buy BF audios so I can get more Evelyn, and my only worry is whether the Big Finish people can possibly write as wonderfully as vvj5 does in this story. If you're like me and don't know the audios, don't worry, because no background knowledge is needed (and you don't need to know Six, either -- just the Doctor). The dialogue shines, and while I can't vouch for Evelyn's characterization, Six is captured perfectly.

Hello! I'm [personal profile] dbskyler, and I'll be your reccer for the week. I'll be bringing you a mix of recs -- New Who and Classic, gen and shippy, funny and fluffy and dark. I hope you find in these recs at least one new story you enjoy.

Story: The Utterly Non-Committal, Generic, All-Purpose Eleventh Doctor Story
Author: Magnus Greel
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 474
Author's Summary: Some things of some sort happen to a Doctor we don't know yet, and Unspecified Companion. They suffer greatly at the hands of some old enemy or historical figure or maybe a vacuum cleaner with a faulty wire causing it to blow up and emperil the universe. It's hard to say.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Unspecified Companion
Warnings: None

Recced because: As the author says in the author's notes, "Writing for a Doctor we know nothing about yet poses certain difficulties." This story unabashedly plays it safe by simultaneously including every possible alternative in a brief but hilarious look at a future Eleventh Doctor adventure. What makes this fic so brilliant, though, is that in among the extremely funny "let's-cover-all-the-possibilities" jokes are some very specific predictions for the Doctor Who tropes we all know and love, and will definitely be seeing in the future!
