Story: Physician, Heal Thyself
Author: Aiffe
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4,051
Author's Summary: AU of Asylum of the Daleks. Oswin comes along as a companion, and the man who needs to fix things faces something he can't fix.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven, Oswin Oswald
Warnings: None

Recced because: After "Asylum of the Daleks," fandom turned out a number of good AUs in which Oswin the Dalek traveled with the Doctor, but this is one of my favorites. We don't see any more of their travels beyond the first day, when Oswin asks the Doctor to give her back her human voice, but the scene that takes place as he complies feels emotionally deep and very true to the awkwardness you'd expect from the characters in that situation. Oswin wants to be more than what she is, and the Doctor struggles with accepting her Dalekness and wanting to help her move beyond that. I'd love to see more of this AU, but the story as is feels self-contained and very satisfying.

Hi! I'm [livejournal.com profile] wendymr, currently from snowy Canada (yes, still, even though it's almost April!) and I'll be your reccer for the week. I'll mostly be reccing stories from the Ninth and Tenth Doctor eras, with a variety of companions and settings, but I do have a couple of earlier/later era fics to round out the bunch. And I'm going to start off the week with an Eleventh Doctor era fic.

I hope you enjoy my recs this week; if you do, please leave a comment on Teaspoon for the author!

Story: The Witnesses
Author:  Aiffe
Rating: Teen
Word Count: Two chapters, 8365 words
Author's Summary: They can say he existed because they were there, if only in dreams. [Major spoilers for Cold Blood]
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond/Rory Williams
Warnings: None

Recced because: I don't want to give away too much of the story, because it's so cleverly constructed that it deserves to be read without spoilers. But the basic set-up is this: post-Cold Blood, Amy works out that she's forgotten something, or someone, and begins to put together more details (without remembering), and asks the Doctor to tell her. Instead of telling her, he finds a way for her to remember Rory.

The descriptions in the story are vivid and very well-drawn, pulling the reader into the author's universe and Amy and the Doctor's dreams, and characterisation is absolutely spot-on. Bar a few Americanisms here and there, it's note-perfect. If this were filmed as an episode, I would be thrilled.

One excerpt, to show why you should read it:

I hope you enjoy this fic as much as I did!

Story: Choose Wisely
Author: Aiffe
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1295
Author's Summary: Alternate ending to The Beast Below. What if Amy had been mistaken?
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: None
Recced because: This fic presents a stark contrast to the previous rec. Like ‘Nothing to Worry About’, it’s set just after The Beast Below. However, in this fic, things turned out differently. What if Amy had been mistaken? What then? And if we're still going by the "Star Whale = Doctor, dammit!' analogy, then what would that say about the Doctor himself? This fic is grim, wonderfully written and well worth your time.
