Story: entropy
Author: Lady Mercury
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1455
Author's Summary: Oh, Amelia Pond, the things you don't know.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: Angst, Character Study, General, Hurt/Comfort, Introspection

Recced because: First of all, recced because this is amazing. The author always produces sheer quality and this is no exception. Of course (in my humble opinion) every author I recommend (and their glorious fictions) are just brilliant hands down. This fiction though...it is about the sudden remembrance of loss and the actual physical sensations of grief. It is about a man who doesn't think he is lonely, but suddenly remembers how he very much is, even as he tries to hide that from a friend who helps to keep that self-same loneliness and sorrow at bay.

It is about a remarkable companion, who can understand such loss in their own way, even as their own loss is different in so many ways. It is how grief can be silent and still be shared; how one doesn't have to hide their hurts.

It is about the continuance of all things, even if it is not as we used to know them.

I really have no other words that can truly do justice to this fiction. To see all these lovely, terrible, haunting, wonderful, relieving things, one must read this tale. Tis as simple as that, even if it isn't simple at all. I say this, but I do realize that occasionally, one must need a little push to plunge in - and as always, I have done my best to oblige below...

See? Beautiful. Now...go - read! - and tell this writer how they have touched you, how they have made you feel - because in the end, isn't that the point of it all?

Hello [livejournal.com profile] calufrax! I am your intrepid recc-er for the next two weeks, and I have ten stories of various lengths, eras and genres to rec for you that all share one common trait: they are all fantastic.

To wit, I'll start with something short and haunting:

Title: Drift
Author: Lady Mercury
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 408
Author's Summary: It's so quiet he's certain the silence will kill him if the lack of air doesn't get him first.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: To be meta-metaphorical, this whole little fiction is like a balancing act on a precipice; so very short, but you get the sense that any deeper delving is like looking down over a chasm. It's Eleven and the TARDIS: the boy and his box agains the maw of the universe, drifting and holding on to what they can. It's equally logical/mathematical (it is not often outside of mathematics proofs that one uses "suppose" in lieu of a 'being' verb, but I am sure this is deliberate) and emotionally stirring, a perfect character study of Eleven back when it was written in 2011 and now that his run is over as well.

Story: Thermodynamic Stability
Author: Lady_Mercury
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 526
Author's Summary: The stray is in one of the laboratories, mixing things that oughtn’t to be mixed.
Characters/Pairings: Ace, Seven, TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because:

I'm a sucker for Ace and Seven. A lot of fics look at the darker aspects of their relationship/mentor-ship/friendship/whatever it was, and that's fine. I enjoy all of the angles. This fic looks at the lighter side and throws the TARDIS in for good measure. The parallels between the TARDIS's protection of her thief and his strays, and the protection the Doctor shows his companions is a beautiful thing. There is also a very funny and very intentional typo. The TARDIS doesn't get the joke, but I'm sure you will.

Story: a knife inside me
Author: Lady Mercury
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 430
Author's Summary: I won't let love disrupt, corrupt or interrupt me
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, River Song/Mels, Rory Williams
Warnings: Implied violence and discussion of death.

Recced because: It's an exceptionally chilling look into the mind of a girl bred to kill. It's an unnerving reminder that, as much as we may love her, River Song wasn't kidding when she called herself a psychopath. It's not a happy story, by any stretch of the imagination, and it's a bit unsettling, but in that way, it's a perfect fit for the character and her circumstances. It's well written and insightful, and we need more Mels-centric stories in the universe.

The teachers at school said she never did her homework, never bothered to practice. Well. That just wasn’t true. Mels was doing homework all the time, practicing to be something bigger, something better, schooling herself to channel cold like steel.

When she broke Shanna Poggit’s favorite doll, that was homework, was practice.

When she took the shining Year Three pet goldfish home for the weekend, and it never came back: practice.

Be sure to stop by and let the author know if you enjoy it!

Story: Countable Infinities
Author: Lady Mercury
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 534
Author's Summary: Amy and Rory have lots of questions about the TARDIS.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Eleventh Doctor, The TARDIS.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I have a weakness for good TARDIS-fic, so here’s another! It’s a clever and well-characterisated look at the nature of the TARDIS and the Doctor (before we’d ever seen The Doctor’s Wife) - and Amy and Rory trying to understand them both, each in their own particular way. It's lovely.

Story: you in the wake
Author: Lady Mercury
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4,645
Author's Summary: Rory gets up tired. Amy makes the tea. The rosebushes may not last the year.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Other Character(s), Rory Williams, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: Angst, Character Study, General, Hurt/Comfort, Introspection

Recced because: I was watching 'Vincent and the Doctor' with my kiddos tonight and thinking about characters, quirks and POVs - and how we (sometimes) see ourselves reflected in the people around us. I thought about our moods and how they can be reflected by what is (and sometimes what is not) there. Then I thought about mental disorders and how they can be reflected physically and vice versa.

Then I thought about this fiction.

Lady Mercury has a fantastic understanding and grasp of the subtle. The things that stare you in the face as they lay underneath. Her fiction never fails to move and grab me. Like the fiction I recced yesterday, this one is based around a main character - but not the Doctor himself. And this is another one of those fictions where the Doctor is very much present even as he is not there. This is also a fiction about a very pivotal character, though (like with Vincent) his importance is often understated and veiled - even as it looks you in the face all the same.

Rory has always been one of my favorite characters and there are so very many, many reasons. And the consequences and stakes for him are just as high as for anyone else - but he is so very different from the Companions the Doctor usually travels with. I could go on along this vein for a very long time *laughs* but suffice to say, you will likely see the parallel between what I watched tonight with my kiddos and what is reflected in this fic (and what we sometimes see reflected in ourselves based off of expectations and motives of others). Yes. The fiction is that complex, even as it is very much softly simple. And it is one that stays with you for a long time afterwards.

Please be sure to stop and tell her what you think - I know you will all find this fiction inspiring and thought-provoking as I did...

Story: awful tough lately
Author: Lady Mercury
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2104
Author's Summary: “Is it poisoned?” Amy asks. The difficulty he has focusing on her probably means that it is, but he’s not about to tell her that.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, The Doctor (11th), The TARDIS
Warnings: no standard warnings apply

Recced because: If you like hurt/comfort stories, you'll like this story. It's a take on "The Doctor gets shot with a poisoned dart," but this hurt/comfort story is charming.

The second one for today is another Eleventh era story:

Story: what dreams may come
Author: Lady Mercury
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1181
Author's Summary: On the TARDIS, there isn’t day, and there isn’t night, but there are times when Amy is awake when she feels she should be sleeping.
Characters: Eleven, Amy
Warnings: None
Recced because: A stark reminder that really, nobody wants to be in the Doctor's head. It starts off light but takes a darker turn that makes your heart ache for both the Doctor and Amy. The prose is spare and evocative, and the ending wraps things up as best it can, but it makes you wonder about what happens next.

Story: Waves
Author: Lady Mercury
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 469
Author's Summary: The important thing, he thinks, watching Amy paddle in the sea, is to keep your head above water. Concentrate on the fixed points. Post "Cold Blood."
Characters: Eleven, Amy
Warnings: None

Recc-ed because: Oh, I do love mathematical metaphors written well. The Doctor is the perfect character for them, as he has most likely forgotten more math than Euler, Newton and Liebnitz could write in three lifetimes each. In this post-ep for Cold Blood, the Doctor seeks solace in fixed point equations and symmetric identities. It's also very atmospheric and visual; I love how the physical world reflects the trigonometric. It is very short, so I will just share with you the first paragraph and you will have to go read the rest:
