Story: Gothic Romance
Author: vvj5
Rating: teen
Word Count: 7513
Author's Summary: It is a fact universally acknowledged that any beings splintered in time will inevitably run into each other. No law says it has to end well, though…
Characters/Pairings: Clara Oswin Oswald, Scaroth
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is an entertaining and atmospheric short story that's part gothic novel parody, part heist fic, part timey-wimey sci-fi story, and combines characters from many different eras of Doctor Who in a very clever way. It's probably best read after you've seen 'City of Death' and know who Scaroth is, but the central concept of characters who are displaced in time and thrown together in unusual circumstances is probably easy for any Whovian to catch on to. You wouldn't think 'fake relationship' trope fic featuring a time-stream Clara & a classic Who monster could be so amusing, but you'd be wrong. With it's crisp dialogue, well-realized setting, and unexpected pathos toward the end, I could easily picture this making a very fine Big Finish audio. I thoroughly enjoyed this one the whole way through, and hope lots of others will too.

Story: Self-Made Man
Author: vvj5
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1,012
Author's Summary: JOSEPH: "Close to the Kandyman, were you?" / GILBERT: "I made him." Gilbert M and the Kandyman.
Characters/Pairings: Other Character(s), The Kandy Man
Warnings: None

Recced because: I can't shake the feeling that there have been few stories in Doctor Who history more unfairly maligned over the years than The Happiness Patrol. It started almost as soon as it first aired, and continued, with what is in reality a deceptively smart, subversive and brutal story about how oppressive regimes work and ways they can be resisted becoming instead Exhibit A whenever any discussion turns to Doctor Who being "too silly." And no aspect of the story came in for more of this sort of thing than its most iconic figure, the infamous Kandyman. It didn't help that the character visually resembled a famous British advertising mascot of the day, but it does irritate me intensely that one of the more compellingly unpleasant villains in 80s Who became a poster child for its supposed decline and fall on a decade or more of "I love the 80s" type television programmes. The irony being that most of those leading the mockery either hadn't seen the story itself, or hadn't understood it, instead judging it purely on its dayglow sugar-coated visual façade, one of the things the story itself was arguing against.

Enough ranting from me. Instead allow me to recommend this fic which goes a long way towards redressing the injustices I outline above. Starting from the television story, and riffing on the extra backstory for the characters described in the really rather good Target novelisation, the author paints a vivid picture of the monstrousness of the Kandyman himself, who is at once a tragic and horrifying figure, and the strange, abusive co-dependency he has with his creator/sidekick/prisoner/husband Gilbert M. The story itself is told from the point of view of Gilbert himself, and really gets inside the head of this weak, fearful, morally malleable character, the sort of person tyrannies like the one on Terra Alpha cannot function without, simultaneously a victim and an enabler of its terror and repression. And like all of this author's stories, it is very well-written indeed.

This author is no stranger to this comm, and for a very good reason. If you are at all appreciative of the Seventh Doctor and his era, go and read this story now. You won't be disappointed.

Author's Summary: Eight, Charley, and an alien snowy wonderland with no peril for once...
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Charley Pollard, slight Eight/Charley
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is such a cute, fluffy little piece between the Eighth Doctor and Charley. Eight's voice is perfect, and Charley's cynicism of such a peaceful place is well justified, knowing what kind of trouble these two are always finding. I loved the ending too, if there's nothing happening, why don't you make your own waves? Though author perfectly portrays a cute little moment between these two characters. Honestly, it would seem unnatural if these two found a peaceful moment... they are more inclined for adventure and challenges! No wonder Charley feels so out of place no matter how sweet it is... A very enjoyable little tale.

Characters/Pairings: The First Doctor, Susan Foreman, the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: Shortly after leaving Gallifrey with his granddaughter, the Doctor does his first bit of TARDIS maintenance. It's expertly written, with great character moments, but what I particularly love about this fic is how it shows us the beginning of what is, arguably, the central relationship of the entire series: the Doctor and the TARDIS. Recced because: I love this story! The various interactions between the characters are hilarious and their voices spot on. I must confess to a special fondness for The Brig and Donna interacting with each other. I think they would have got along wonderfully if they ever had had a chance to meet. But there are several delightful scenes here, the Doctors bickering with each other, Jo realising that Ten is the Doctor and the Doctors joining forces to annoy the Master, for example.

This is a short but excellent look at their relationship after they came home, and their voices are captured perfectly. Characters/parings: Sixth Doctor, Clara Oswin Oswald
Author's summary: Clara's alone in a wood in the middle of the night, but there's something else out there...

Recced because: The concept of what it must be like for Clara in the Doctor's time-stream, to be all those Claras, different yet the same, over and over, is an intriguing idea only just touched on in the show. This fic is a very well-done take on that concept. You can hear the voice of the Clara we know perfectly in this fragment of her, and her brief meeting with the Sixth Doctor here works very well, as he's equally well-written. This is an eerie story with some mentions of gore, and obviously, because it's a time-stream Clara, this version of her does die, but it's fascinating to hear her thought process as she realizes what's happening, and heartbreakingly poignant too, especially at the end. This story would be perfect reading for Halloween, but I had to rec it today, because I want everyone else to go read it too.

Characters/Pairings: Jo Grant, Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart

Recced because: I'm genuinely shocked this hasn't been recced yet, but all that means is that I get the pleasure of doing so myself. Jo often doesn't get enough credit as a companion; she's perceived as "the ditzy one," and sure, she can be a bit flighty, but what if that's just a characteristic masking a far darker talent? After all, no one said assassins for hire had to be dour, serious folks; they could just as easily cheerfully stab someone with a knitting needle or feed someone some festively decorated poison cakes. And thus Jo acquires a new backstory I'm perfectly willing to believe is true, although I suppose your mileage may vary there.

Characters/Pairings: The Doctor and Ruth Mills from the Big Finish Unbound series, Full Fathom Five
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: More forays to the fringes of the fandom, of Alternate Universes and audio adventures. This is a companion piece to the BFA Full Fathom Five. [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook says of this story, "This story is spoiler-free and intended as a teaser/prequel, or standalone, set in the audio’s 27 year gap. (Trust me. Somebody had to do it.)" Well, no one better than herself to do so, and not just because the AU Doctor in this story is played by perennial favorite David Collings ;)

I don't think I'm spoiling when I say that the audio gives us a glimpse into a darker Doctor, one for whom the ends justify the means. Just that tiny tweak in his personality is enough to set forth a strange parody of events we might have seen in a kinder, gentler character like the Eleventh or perhaps Third incarnations, undercut by nothing but ulterior motives. The audio is definitely worth tracking down and listening to. And this story is worth reading for its expert prose and for the way the author effortlessly captures the spirit and character of the audio story, taking everything we know and love and recognize about the Doctor, turning it on its ear, and leaving us asking, 'But what if...'

Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, crossover characters
Warnings: None

Recced because: Today, ladies and gentlemen, we have a Tenth Doctor crossover with P.G. Wodehouse. Note the delicately blended balance of comedy and action, the...

...okay, I fail at writing early-20th-century British piffle in the grand style, but vvj5 is excellent at it. Her Wodehouse pastiche voice is second to none, and her plot pacing in this story is superb - like Wodehouse himself, she handily pulls together several unrelated plot threads into a hilarious climactic collision that then neatly sorts itself out by its own momentum and turns out better than it had any right to do. XD

I'm not doing this very well, am I? Basically, it is AWESOME and hilarious and has comically overcomplicated plottery and cross-purposes and rubber-suit-aliens and a ladder. Especially the ladder. ;-)

Also, you absolutely do not need to know the crossover fandom to enjoy this story. As long as you have any sort of acquaintance with British comedy tropes - such as you might gain from, er, being a Doctor Who fan ;-) - you'll be fine. Have fun!

And now the end is near, and so I face the final curtain...of this week's reccing on Calufrax, that is! It's been fun sharing some of my favourite stories again. Author's Summary: The Doctor feels that Romana has some cultural lessons to learn.
Characters/Pairings: Romana I, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None
Recced because: Well, because it's a very funny, well-characterised look at two of my favourite Who characters of all time? That should be a good enough reason to be going on with, I should think. ;) Vvj5, aka [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook, is surely no stranger to the majority of you who frequent this comm and the Teaspoon site. This is yet another excellent entry from her, a rare foray into the field of Doctor/Romana fluff and very well done indeed, especially considering it isn't one of her main areas of fanfictional interest. This shows all of the author's usual deep Who knowledge and appreciation, attention to detail, restraint and good taste, insightful characterisation and genuinely funny humour. I hope she won't think I'm laying it on a bit thick when I say she is an example to all of us in the field of Whofic and genre fanfiction in general. I think the main reason I like this so much, though, is because it's Four and Romana going to the pictures together and managing to be as witty and argumentative about it as they are about most of the activities they engage in. You can imagine them doing this kind of thing all the time in between the on-screen stories. Good stuff. Go and read it and let the author know how much you like it (because I know you will). :)

UNIT: Strange Weapons
Author:
vvj5 a.k.a [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 36335
Author's Summary: April 1985: Good scientific advisors are hard to find. Dr Webber discovers why when he’s expected to deal with zombies, aliens and Torchwood on his second day and his only help is a tin dog and a ghost. Colonel Crichton and Sarah Jane are planning an exit strategy of sorts, Bambera is trying to keep her men from joining the opposing forces. They'll all be lucky to stay alive.
Characters/Pairings: K9, Sarah Jane Smith, Winifred Bambera, Colonel Crichton, UNIT, Torchwood, OCs
Warnings: [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook isn't really that type of author :)

Recced because: Recced firstly because when I first read it I more or less immediately thought "if I ever rec on Calufrax, this is definitely going on my list!", and secondly because I think more people should read it and then go on to read the "80s UNIT" series of which it is part and allow themselves to be drawn into and captivated by it the way I have been. This isn't actually the first story in the series, although it is the first to feature our soon-to-be heroes Nat and Tilly. Some people are understandably wary of fanfic heavily featuring OCs, but I think these OCs and this story and its sequels more than justify the author's decision to use them. They're lovely, they are. :D And as you can see from the summary above, there are plenty of "canon" Who characters getting in on the act (K9 is brilliant in this, and you can never have too many fics featuring Bambera, I say), not least Colonel Crichton from The Five Doctors (briefly), who here goes from walk-on obscurity to a certain quiet, noble British heroism that would do the Brig himself proud. And plus you get to find out just what UNIT was up to between Seeds of Doom and Battlefield and learn all about their ongoing struggle with the dastardly men in grey suits from the Torchwood Institute. I could go on gushing for another few paragraphs, but suffice to say, read this. And then read all of the sequels. Yes, all of them.

Warnings: Spoilers for Red Dwarf series 7.

Recced because: As a Red Dwarf fan, this is what I want to have happened after series 7. Martha's niceness and understanding, her companion and doctoring ability to talk to people are exactly what 'Ace' needs. Meanwhile he looks at her and appreciates her (sort of) and manages to (lightly) humiliate the Doctor, who is fantastically petulant about the arrival of the other sort of hero (he's athletic! he fires guns at people! he's handsome! [strangely, the hair does work for him] he talks in a ridiculously deep voice! he once surfed an alligator out of a burning helicopter!). As well as being a great match-up all round, this fic leaves me with warm fuzzies, which (if Dwarf has a fault) it must be said Red Dwarf does too rarely.

If you haven't seen 'Red Dwarf' - perhaps you should. It's a low-budget British science fiction show about the last of his kind travelling through (time and) space in a ship all the other aliens make fun of. And it's one of the best and funniest sitcoms Britain has ever produced (until it isn't. The relevant episode in series 7 is about the time you should stop watching.)

Story: How The West Was Lost
Author: vvj5
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 24,486
Author's summary: What the good citizens of Stodge City want is a US Peace Marshal to run the Rumpo Kid out of town. What they get is a confused sanitation engineer, demure Miss Oakley with a rifle in her trunk, an elegant Time Lord who’s the living spit of the dead sheriff and a sceptical Brigadier who might just be the only man in the town who can shoot straight. The Old West was never like this…
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Warnings: none.

Recced because: So, to end the year 2009 on a high note, I hereby rec another humorous crossover - in many ways, the humorous crossover. Worry not - if you've never heard of Carry On Cowboy, this is still not an excuse not to read this wonderful story. I haven't til I read it, and I laughed my head off anyway. Building on the wonderful meta notion that actors actually go and have more than one job on television - and apparently a surprising number of them found work on both Doctor Who and the Carry On movies - vvj5 gives us a unique crossover full of hilarious misunderstandings and reminiscent of the time "sitcom" was not an ugly word. Also, it's Three and the Brig. These two are enough to make any story worthwhile, and their onscreen chemistry is translated beautifully into this story.

I thought I'd do a couple of slightly longer recs to finish off, for leisurely weekend reading. Here's the first:

Story: Five Times Liz Shaw and the Brigadier Saved the World
Author: vvj5/[livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 5592
Author's summary: Season 7 without the Doctor. Surprisingly, the world doesn't end.
Characters/Pairings: Liz/Brig
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a glorious AU, little snapshots of what might have happened if the Doctor hadn't turned up in Spearhead. Things don't change that much, but everything's that little bit more difficult and hard-won without him around (well, except in the case of Inferno, which becomes somewhat simpler!), but in the process Liz and the Brigadier become closer than they did in canon. The characterisation's done with a wonderful light touch even amongst the occasional grimness; take this exchange, for instance:

"If you need help, you may have as many of my men as you need -."

"I don’t need anyone to clutter up the room and break things, but when I do, I shall be sure to take you up on the offer."

What I find particularly interesting is the way [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook deals with the fall out of not having the Doctor present (you can see some of it in the quote, with Liz's attitude to the idea of helpers rather similar to the Doctor's initial attitude to her, but the most interesting one to me is the discussion at the end of the second chapter, which acts as a distorted mirror of the Doctor and Brig's falling out in the Silurians, but surprisingly it's the Brig whose arguments are closest to the Doctor's in the original version, because of the different experiences he has; it's a great bit of characterisation that undercuts a lot of fannish clichés).

Story: Five Times Polly Patched Up Ben (And One Time Ben Got to Do the Honours)
Author: vvj5/[livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3126
Author's Summary: Ben gets injured by everything from Cybermen to TARDIS appliances. Luckily for him, Polly's always on hand to pick up the pieces. More or less, anyway.
Characters/Pairings: Ben/Polly, First Doctor, Second Doctor, Jamie.
Warnings: None, I think.

Recced because: Ben/Polly is pretty much on the same scale as Ian/Barbara when it comes to Companions Who Obviously Married Each Other. This story is packed with charm and sweetness, just like our lovely couple.

Story: A Row (Or Two)
Author: vvj5
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1353
Author's Summary: On the usefulness of knitting in an emergency.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe
Warnings: None

Recced because: Six and Evelyn are locked in a cell and have a discussion about escaping and knitting (not necessarily in that order). Evelyn is a character from the Big Finish audios, and I have a confession to make: I have never heard a single one of those audios. But not only do I love this fic, it has made me want to go buy BF audios so I can get more Evelyn, and my only worry is whether the Big Finish people can possibly write as wonderfully as vvj5 does in this story. If you're like me and don't know the audios, don't worry, because no background knowledge is needed (and you don't need to know Six, either -- just the Doctor). The dialogue shines, and while I can't vouch for Evelyn's characterization, Six is captured perfectly.

(Sorry for the slightly delayed start in reccing! I've picked out seven stories for this week, one each from the era of each old school Doctor. Since I'm late in starting, I'll do two a day on the weekend to catch up.)

Story: Just Another Day
Author: vvj5 ([livejournal.com profile] lost_spook)
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 1423
Author's summary: It's business as usual for Ian, Barbara, the Doctor and Vicki. You know, danger, imprisonment, escape...
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, One, Vicki
Warnings: None

Recced because: The recent [livejournal.com profile] tardis_gen ficathon produced loads of great fic, but this is one of my favourites. It works as both a wonderful recreation and a lighthearted deconstruction of its era. The little soupcon of Ian/Barbara shippiness in the mix is wonderful (and doesn't render it non-gen in the slightest IMO, given how present the same sort of thing is in the canon), and somehow it's particularly nice to see Vicki used in a fic like this -- she's not in it much but [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook nails her characterisation perfectly, giving the lie to the idea that she's a bit of a cookie cutter Susan replacement.

Story:Surprise!
Author:vvj5
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 766
Author's Summary: Seven and Benny are alone in the dark and in trouble. Business as usual, dear diary, except for one small detail.
Characters/Pairings: Benny, 7th Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: In their author info, vvj5 says that Seven is their Doctor. Seven is my Doctor too, and I like this little fic for its serious silliness, the friendship between Benny and Seven, the yeti and the ending. Bonus points if you remember that Benny's middle name is surprise! I'd like to add a bonus rec in here for vvj5's series about the hidden corners of the Tardis, which can be found here!

Story: Harry in a hole
Author: vvj5
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4517
Author's Summary: What it says. Harry Sullivan falls down a hole and finds he's not alone.
Characters/Pairings: Harry Sullivan, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings:

Recced because:

It’s exactly what the title and summary say: Harry, in a hole. The world really does need more Harry. He’s sweet, clumsy, and always ready to help. He’s the original tindog! And this story makes for a stunning showcase of Lt. Harry Sullivan in all his glory.

Also, today/tomorrow is Halloween, and, fitting with that theme, this story is rather quite creepy at points.

Enjoy!

Story: UNIT: Invisible Man
Author: vvj5
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6,910
Author's Summary: In which the Doctor is AWOL, there's some unexplained disappearances in the West Country and the Brigadier's existence is in the hands of his other scientific adviser...
Characters/Pairings: Liz Shaw, the Brigadier, Benton
Warnings: None

Recced because: Liz and the Brigadier investigate together! The story (and its companion UNIT: Haunting) is frothy and fun and chock full of 70s-era Doctor Who cliches in the best possible way. Liz and the Brig make a great team in these stories, and I love seeing them showcased like this.
