Story: Good ol' Captain Smaarg
Author: Pab
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4,164
Author's Summary: The Master is to be executed. His last wish: to see the Doctor. His plan: to change places. And so the Doctor finds himself being taken for execution while the Master has the key to the TARDIS. As for Captain Smaarg, he's too concerned with paperwork. And Peri? She suspects nothing.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (5th), Peri, the Master
Warnings: None

Recced because: As I was observing the other day, I find something very pleasing about Doctor Who stories told from the point of view of the hapless or oblivious characters who have fleeting contacts with the Doctor and his companions in the course of their activities, and this is in part one of those. It also reflects the way in which the best things about many official Who stories are their weird and wonderful supporting characters, even if the main supporting character in this case is one of the author's creation. As I've reflected before, there is a school of thought that frowns upon fanfic which focuses on OCs, but I personally have no problem with it, and when these characters are as engaging and well-drawn as they are here, they can actually be one of the real pleasures to be had in reading fic.

The author's summary above pretty much covers the plot of this fic, but the plot here is secondary to the aim of telling a very mid-80s Who story, for the most part from the perspective of the officious, bureaucracy-loving, mammalophobic alien official Captain Smaarg, who really can't be bothered with these Time Lords and humans messing up his paperwork with their adventures. When I say mid-80s, I mean the way in which this fic captures so well various features of that era, such as the Fifth Doctor's quiet exasperation with the universe, the Master's sheer dastardliness and Peri's attempts at diplomacy. You can vividly picture the wonky, overlit corridors the story almost certainly takes place within, and the characters' costumes recycled from old Baker-era stories, and I mean that as a heartfelt compliment to the author.

Smaarg himself is a delight to behold, a sort of reptilian Gordon Brittas, but without the unconquerable optimism or, frankly, the essentially good intentions. Nevertheless, for all of his lack of imagination and petty-minded pedantry, he is portrayed as somebody who genuinely does love his job and think that it is vital to the perpetuation of the greater good, while remaining blithely unaware up to now of the unpopularity his pettifogging has given rise to among his colleagues and, indeed, everybody else he encounters. It's quite an achievement on the part of the author to make this character essentially sympathetic, helping the Doctor save the day at least as much as he hinders him. The fact that the story is also at several points genuinely laugh out loud funny certainly helps.

So go and check it out. I hope you'll like it as much as I did.

Story: Shadows Without Substance
Author: IrishVampire13
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2015
Author's Summary: Shardovan cannot remember a time when he was not the Librarian of Castrovalva.
Characters/Pairings: Shardovan (from Castrovalva), the Master (Ainley), other characters.
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a fascinating look at one of the minor characters of Castrovalva -- Shardovan, who among all the denizens of the city, seemed to be the only one to realize what was going on. The fic gives us an intriguing view into daily Castrovalvan life, and shows us Shardovan's slow realization of the nature of his world, and himself.

Title: Alone and Palely Loitering
Author: IrishVampire13
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 669
Characters: Eleventh Doctor, The Master (Ainley)
Author's summary: Sick at hearts, he'd said.
Warnings: none

Recced because: This short fic is a moving vignette of a rare moment of genuine sympathy from the Master toward the Doctor. Their simple dialogue, and the Master's thought process behind it, are perfectly balanced to show the conflicting claims of the old friendship & the long estrangement between the two of them. The moment of almost connection being made possible only when both feel they have nothing left makes it all the more heartbreaking & poignant. A beautifully understated examination of the Doctor & the Master's 'best enemies' relationship. :)

Word Count: 8152
Author's Summary: “It had come as no real surprise to the Doctor that the Master owned a fully functional genetic loom. Kidfic in which Five and Ainley!Master are living together for some reason and have a kid and also wacky parenting misadventures.”

“It was this combination of events that led the Doctor to kidnap his own son in the middle of night.”

So... you either like kidfic, or you don’t. Obviously there’s a lot of variation within the subgenre in terms of quality, but the actual idea seems a bit marmite regardless of that. I can only say that this fic’s sharp and wry and funny. There’s nothing smotheringly smarmy about it, despite the premise sounding like a vat of treacle the Candyman would for sure drown you in.

Why I like this fic more than is reasonable. )

So this is some In Heat/Pon Farr fic—honestly, I wish Who fic played more with classic fanfic tropes? Not exclusively, obviously. I’m glad for the variety and the particularly of a lot of Who fic, but I still wish that we got our quota of the classics and new standards. Where you at, Cave Fic? Et tu, ridiculous A/B/O? I sort of feel owed these things, even where I don't particularly like the trope in question!

Characters: Iris Wildthyme, Romana II, The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (5th), The War Chief, Drax, The Master (Ainley), The Meddling Monk, The Rani
Pairings: a touch of Doctor/Master, but it’s comedic (and might, if we believe the Doctor, be a Trolling Turlough—a Trollough?) and doesn’t actually get to the warned-for Explicit (Chat) Sex: this is an ensemble piece uber alles
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing
Recced because:

All the renegades have a mailing list, which Iris Wildthyme trolls. How many renegades? “To answer your question (more for the benefit of others interested) there are currently nine _official_ members of the list, of which only five are usually active. The other four are grandfathered from the original list created by Omega and distributed from the anti-matter universe.

Yes, before you ask, we do still distribute to all known universes. This is very difficult, technically speaking, and is also why I am moderator and not, for instance, Drax.” ←The Rani moderates. This fic spans several early Doctors’ worth of canon, and is fun for Three’s breezy email-voice alone.

Author's Summary: This is nearly a poem, I think, and is a look at the Ainley Master on his debut in 'Logopolis'.
Characters/Pairings: Tegan Jovanka, Fourth Doctor, the Master (Ainley version)
Warnings: None

Recced because: Because I was just going through my Favorites on Teaspoon tonight, glancing at some new gems I added to my list last night/early this morning, and rediscovered this beauty. And I was profoundly relieved to see that no one else has recced it yet.

Anyway. I've recently begun familiarizing myself with Ainley's version of the Master, and my friends will readily attest to how quickly I've become hooked on him. This is a brief, and incredibly chilling, glimpse of him during one of my favorite episodes. Story: Doctor Merlin
Author: Emery Board
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2284
Author's Summary: A Dresden Files/Doctor Who crossover posted with permission from Kesomon, for whom it was written.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Seven, Ainley!Master, Harry Dresden
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor being Merlin is a running joke throughout the series I particularly enjoy, mostly because it’s a case where the Doctor is as ignorant of the rest of us (since, presumably, the time when he plays Merlin is in his personal timeline’s future) and so he’s stuck playing catch-up. Seven is my favorite instance of this trope as well because Seven casts himself as a puppet-master who always has all the pieces. This fic takes a play on the title Merlin and crosses Seven into the Dresden Files universe, where the main character (Harry Dresden) is the black sheep member of the White Council of Wizards, whose leader holds the title Merlin (the historical Merlin having been the creator and first leader of said council). Add an escaped Cheetah!Master who decides to prey upon the wrong jogger and you get this fic, where a confused Harry makes Seven tap-dance his way out of mucking up several timelines at once. Well worth a morning read.

Story: Master's Thesis
Author: helluin
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 42,530
Author's Summary: When Nyssa tries to return home with the cure to a deadly plague, the TARDIS overshoots and slips back into her past, the Doctor's future. Worse, the Master is already there, taking a sinister interest in her family. Hemmed in by potential time paradoxes, there's only one person to whom Nyssa can turn for help: her best friend Tegan.
Characters/Pairings: Nyssa, Other Character(s), Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (5th), The Master (Ainley), Turlough
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: This fic is based on the Big Finish arc where an older Nyssa joins Five, Tegan and Turlough for a spell in the TARDIS, but this can be read without any knowledge of the Big Finish audios. What I love about this fic is that it feels like a Big Finish audio or even an old serial with Five in it. There's action, witty quips and a paradox that needs to be fixed or else. I highly recommend this for Classic Who fans.

Story: A Fleeting Passion for Facial Hair

Word Count: 1564
Author's Summary: A very serious multi-era fic about the Master's beards.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Master (Ainley), The Master (Delgado), The Master (Other)
Warnings: Humor

Recced because: Okay, this is sheer Crack. I mean, I read this and I laughed so hard, I think I sprained my ribs. Sadly the author has never acknowledged the bill for that, but she did post this at Teaspoon, just so I could rec it for you here. *Beams*

This is a Very Serious observation about the Master and his Beardiness (and sometimes lack thereof) throughout his own regenerations. His pursuit of the Perfect Facial 'Do - and the Doctor's mixed (and heartfelt) reactions throughout. Even if you have never seen Classic Who , I'm sure this will still be a laugh. I know at the very least, you might've seen pictures of the Master and his various attempts to decorate his chin with luxurious, artistic (and under-appreciated) styles that can only be admired by the true believers in the masterful pun intended expression of...of hair on one's face. But if you still need convincing -

I might just have a modest sample beneath the cut )

Recced because: It’s a galloping good read, that’s why. If you don’t know the crossover fandom (Upstairs Downstairs – the 1970s one, that is) or Gerald and Harriet (who are characters from Edwardian Torchwood), fear not – neither do I and I still loved it. It makes use of a bit of cross-casting (one of the UD characters was played by one Anthony Ainley) and dives into adventure, fun and some romance between our old-fashioned heroes. Yes, people, if you’ve ever wondered what happened after the ending of The Mark of the Rani, here is your answer! It’s a fic filled with bickering, death threats, unaccountable moments of life-saving, and hyperbole. And a dinosaur. I grinned pretty much the whole way through, and I hope you will too.

Warnings: Explicit Sex with consent issues, spanking

Recced because: It’s cracky, it has arranged marriage and weird Time Lord marriage costums and it has hot sex. Do I need to say more? Well, it’s also amazingly written. The character voices are great. There are nice bits about their romantic backstory and the emotions feel all very true. There is also a sequels story to this, that’s worth reading.

Recc'ed Because: A fleeting scene with wonderful characterization and dialogue. I really loved The Big Bang, and I love the complex relationship between the Doctor and the Master, and hey, this short story is the best of both! Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (Academy era), The Master (Academy era), The Master (Ainley)
Warnings: Angst, Hurt/Comfort

Recced because: This author really should be recced more! They have a lot of good fiction, scattered across many, many eras. Some of us have a habit of sticking to mostly one era - but this author (like my previously recced one), is very comfortable crossing from Classic to New and back again (sometimes even mixing the two). I was going to rec one of those - a fantastic X-Over between Classic and New - when this fiction caught my attention. The episode referenced has long haunted me (and fueled many a mental fic when I was small). The reflections within it are so truthful, there was no way I could waste the reccing opportunity on anything else! I could go on (and likely exceed the wordcount of the story itself), but this is one of those you just need to read. It is not very long at all, but there is so much packed into so few words, you'll find yourself reading it once, twice more just to squeeze every achey drop of nuance from this fiction that you can. A promise made and broken. A friendship that died long ago, yet still lives somewhere inside. Yes...definitely read this! And please let the author know how awesome they are, so we can continue to recieve gems like this one!

Warnings: None
Recced because: Who doesn't love a good Mary-Poppins-is-a-Time-Lord story? It's short and sweet, a nice little encounter between two eccentric wanderers, and then it goes and ties into The Movie. Tows the line perfectly between silly and serious. This has made my day.

Story: Supreme Courtship
Author: x_los
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 6023
Author's Summary: From the Best Enemies Kink Meme: "Legally Blonde (the musical) crossover, Ainley!Master/Davison!Callahan. The Master is surprised to find an older version of the Doctor working as a cutthroat lawyer, but it's okay because older men are hot." Now with more Eight and Lucie, because Sheridan Smith!Elle Woods could not be ignored.
Characters/Pairings: Five/Ainley!Master, Eight, Lucie

Recced because: OK, so, logic dictates that I should probably choose something a bit more accessible (and I did say more serious... and I doubt x_los will thank me), but I want to rec this one, so, er, here it is!

Regarding the accessibility issue though and to bring us all up to speed, know this:
In 2010 'Legally Blonde: The Musical' (surprisingly excellent, despite being a musical adapated from a film)(which I also think is surprisingly excellent) opened on London's West End starring Sheridan Smith (who plays Eight's companion Lucie Miller) as Elle Woods, and Peter Davison (Five) as Professor Callahan, who is much more villainous than the movie version of the same character (one of his songs is called 'Blood in the Water') but who still makes a move on Elle towards the end. This spiffy video advert they did has some fun visuals of Smith as Elle, and Davison as Callahan (dancing). Really all you need to know is that Five's been chameleon-arched and now thinks he's a lawyer. I just think the Legally Blonde stuff is a fun background.

Anyway, so it's a good and amusing idea. Five is so totally unlike Callahan, who is quite like Ainley!Master. There's a lot of humour to be derived from that and from misunderstandings, etc, and if you're read other x_los stuff you'll know she's good at humour. She's also very good at a) writing porn - so if you like that sort of thing, there is some of that and b) writing the Doctor/Master relationship. Nothing is easy and no conversation isn't actually a confrontation, but they like each other enough that it works if either of them are willing to admit it.

This fic also has something else to recommend it - Eight and Lucie! One of my all time favourite Team TARDISes. They are very good here, particularly Lucie, who brings some fun meta-commentary on the Doctor/Master relationship towards the end. In short: I like this fic very much – I hope you enjoy it.

Story: Imaginary Worlds (the Here I Dreamt I was an Architect remix)

Rating: Teen (it says All Ages, but I might even go so far as to say Adult)
Word Count: 5897
Author's Summary: There is a room in the TARDIS that always stays locked. (Written for the best_enemies remix challenge.)
Characters/Pairings: Doctor/Master - arguably including pre-series Doctor/pre-series Master, pre-series Doctor/War Chief!Master, Three/Delgado!Master, Three/Crispy!Master and Five/Master. One thing it doesn't have is Pryce!Master, although he is listed on Teaspoon
Warnings: None listed, though there is sex and swearing and horror

Recced because: This fic was written in 2009, since when dark fairy tales and Doctor Who have become increasingly intertwined. If you like the sort of story where something terrible is presented as a good thing in beautiful, soothing language, you might like this fic - even if you think Doctor/Master isn't really your cup of tea.

I think a brief introduction is necessary, though, before you read it. This fic is a 'remix' (of sorts) of another fic I also like (Imaginary Worlds by x_los), which posits that, at some point, the young Master made a copy of the Doctor that lived in his mind and which he could interact with as though it were the real Doctor. He abandoned the copy for a time, but returned to it after the Doctor left Gallifrey/him. In the original fic, the copy/construct idea was played largely for laughs - but it's very creepy, really, particularly in a universe where thoughts can think for themselves (see- oh, I don't know... 'Castrovalva', for example).

This fic is an atmospheric and disturbing examination of that idea, and of obsession carried too far. Thus, it also functions as an excellent character study of the Master.

Word Count: 4724
Why recced: Great premise! An expansion of “Survival” where the Doctor and the Master, both under the influence of the Cheetah Planet, are stranded together and give in to their animal instincts. Intriguing analysis of their relationship and the way that the Master’s life revolves around the Doctor. And an adorably happy ending that you wish could really happen.
Excerpt: “This other creature, the Master’s mate, the Doctor, the only thing in the Master’s kingdom that could be his equal, was the focus of the Master’s life, and nothing brought him more joy than caring for his mate and seeing that he was as content as the Master. Summary: Crack!Response to Survival. The Master employs amazing long-term pick-up strategies, at the expense of the Doctor's sanity and Bernaz the Sentient Muskrat of Woe.
Why recced: Perfect crack! Everything that is ridiculous about the episode “Survival” (and Ainley Master’s plots in general) and everything that is ridiculous about the Doctor/Master pairing is made fun of brilliantly and hilariously.
Excerpt: “Can’t you ever just ask me out on a normal date?” the Doctor shrieked. “The Cheetah Planet? For Rassilon’s sake, I just want to go to the Olive Garden and order Veal Parmesan or something! Instead I’m trapped for an unknown period on a planet of frankly ridiculous looking carnivores with you licking your fangs at me–goddamit, Koschei! I just wanted some appetizers and white wine! Set to The Raven, with a brilliant eye for meter and turn of phrase, and some awesome references to Who canon and the original poem. It's amazing. Just click on the link, go! You will not regret it.

Story: A Bad Habit (The Master Never Learns Remix)
Author: rynne
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2,605
Author's Summary: The Master and the Doctor usually manage to understand each other, no matter how many situations they get themselves into.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Peri Brown, various versions of the Doctor and the Master
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Remixes are one of my favorite things in fandom. If you're not familiar, they're basically fanfics of other fanfics - taking someone else's work and giving it a new spin, a new perspective, or expanding it somehow. In this fic, Rynne started with A Bad Habit by Hokuto, which is a fun short piece about the Doctor and the Master working together, and expanded that idea into a series of confrontations and cooperative moments between the Doctor and the Master. I think the story succeeds both as a good example of a remix and as a good fic that can stand on its own.

Story: In Dreams
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3290
Author's Summary: Time Lords don't, by design, dream. But the Doctor is a very different sort of Time Lord.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Eighth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor, the Master (Delgado), the Master (Ainley), the Master (Roberts), the Master (Jacobi), the Master (Simm)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It's a fic that starts with Gallifreyan language, continues with the Doctor waiting for a bus, and has the respective Doctors and Masters - well, challenging each other, or rather, the Doctor challenges himself. And run away from that challenge in the same time. What is there not to absolutely love?

Story: A Still More Terrible Night Awaits Us
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1,278
Author's Summary: The distinction between cosmic horror and cosmic wonder is at least partly one's point of view.
Characters/Pairings: Ace, the Doctor (7th), the Master (Ainley) and a famous 20th Century author, although to say more than that would be to give the game away.
Warnings: None, really...
Recced because: Well, mainly because it's a particularly fine entry in the annals of one of the more skilled and prolific authors the Teaspoon has acquired in recent months. Lyricwritesprose has been very productive indeed over the course of the past year or so, and consistently good across the whole of this output. This is one that I only read very recently for the first time, but it instantly grabbed me, and I think it's only right in the circumstances to share.

I think this story probably works a lot better if the reader is (as I will confess to being) at least reasonably aware of the oeuvre and recurring themes of the real life author who appears in it as a guest character; it works especially well if you are also familiar with said author's somewhat idiosyncratic prose style, which here is the subject of a pastiche simultaneously as amusing as it is impressive. I really cannot be more specific than that, because a lot of the joy of this story, for me anyway, was in the slowly-dawning recognition of exactly who the character was, had to be, confirmed in the final line. I think, though, that the story still works very well even if the reader is not familiar with the guest character's works; I think it says something very perceptive about the Doctor and his adventures that some Who fans might hesitate to recognise. We see the Doctor, by and large, from the point of view of his devoted companions and pseudo-companions he acquires in the course of the various stories; what must it be like, though, to see the Doctor and his adventures from the outside, looking in? Without going overboard on the "Time's Champion"/"Time Lord Victorious" stuff that can occasionally be a bit too much, this story reflects on that side of the Doctor's nature and how he and his associates might sometimes appear to those who stumble, unawares, upon this world. And indeed upon what a vast and uncaring universe, full of powerful and dangerous beings, the Whoniverse often appears to be.

Above all, though, this is a very well-written story by a top-notch Who fanficcer currently at the height of their powers - I urge you, go and read it now and leave a few words of acknowledgement for the author.

A Most Squamous and Loathsome Excerpt... )

This is my last day of reccing - I'm sorry so many were of a similar theme, but I hope you've enjoyed some. Here I must trouble you once again with some more excellent Doctor/Master - and bizarrely it is yet more Four/Master, as if that is a common pairing one can easily over rec without caution...

Story: The Moment Has Been Prepared For
Author: x_los
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3955
Author's Summary: From the Best Enemies Kink Meme, "Four/Ainley - sex at Logopolis, in which they genuinely connect and the Doctor thinks the Master isn't so bad after all..." Now with more DOOM. Also a Prelude to Scarf Destruction.
Characters/Pairings: Four/Ainley!Master

Recced because: I think this is one of x_los's best fics, which is saying something because I love pretty much everything she's written. It's a fantastic character study of each of the characters (in general, and in these specific regenerations - at these specific and important points in their lives. Four at the end, Ainley at the beginning) and examination of the relationship between the Doctor and the Master. It's melancholy and thoughtful, like 'Logopolis', but not without hope - or humour. Four becomes so dour in his final stories that he needs someone like the Master (someone he knows of old, someone it's worth impressing) to challenge him and push him to be his old self just before he becomes his new self. It's a very important and transformative fic, both plugging a gap between 'Logopolis' and 'Castrovalva' and changing the way those stories and their central characters are viewed. Also the prose is very good. I hope you read and enjoy it.

Excerpt: ““We may die,” the Master said, explaining himself when he didn’t need to, pressing the Doctor when he’d already surrendered. “We should take this chance,”–he meant ‘you,’ as if he needed the persuasion–“it could be our last. This may fail, we might never–”

The Doctor spoke for himself, unequivocally. “It is, and it won’t. But I’m dying regardless.”

The Master gave him a troubled look, and spoke more sharply than he intended to. “What do you mean?”

“The Watcher paid me a visit.”

Story: Time Lords Made Us Do It
Author: Bagheera
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 978
Author's Summary: After "End of Time", the Time Lords figure out that their only hope for survival is to give the drums to the Doctor. (Gallifrey crack fic).
Characters/Pairings: Romana 2, Braxiatel, Narvin, Leela, K-9, (various Doctor/Master in the background)

Recced because: Another Doctor/Master fic, but one that distinguishes itself by never actually featuring those characters. As the summary notes, this is a Gallifrey fic, first and foremost, and is largely about those brilliant characters trying to tackle a problem - that problem just happens to be making the Doctor and the Master have sex, something that some characters find discomforting (very funny), and others are completely fine with (also very funny). It's largely dialogue based, which works well in an audio fandom and with such distinct voices, it's well structured, and cleverly punctures the pomposity of much of 'End of Time'.

Excerpt: "Andred once showed me this psychic union you speak of," Leela said thoughtfully. "I was not impressed."

Coordinator Narvin made a horrible grimace that seemed to say: I did not need to know this. Romana privately agreed.

Hello and welcome to my recommendations. I haven't quite decided what they will all be, but I suspect lots with be Classic and BFA, if not all, and many will feature the Master, who is not only my favourite, but also under-represented, I think, at this fine institution.

Story: This Penguin For Hire
Author: Levendis
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3985
Author's Summary: When it comes to political espionage, Frobisher is really not your man.
Characters/Pairings: Frobisher, Six/Ainley!Master

Recced because: I'm not all that fond of first person fanfic, in general, but I am a sucker for the first person narrative of Frobisher, the shape-shifting, wise-talking detective penguin companion. And boy is it well done here: hilarious and in character. The Doctor is on similarly good form, fussing about problems with time and Frobisher getting his noble brow right. Meanwhile the Master is around and up to his old tricks, and there are many comedy misunderstandings as he meets Frobisher, then disguised as Six. Three great characters, very well represented, between whom the dialogue crackles, as you would expect in your Film Noir... pastiche. Very funny, very easy to read, and (particularly given that it was written for the prompt 'Six/Ainley/Frobisher: M-PREG') very clever.
(NB. The story contains no actual m-preg, but you should know that to fully appreciate the finer plot developments).

Excerpt: Some guys love complicated plans. Double crosses, triple crosses, the more elaborate the better. Me, I like my plans how I like my fish, simple and raw, and still wriggling. Maybe not that last part. But the point is, after all these years on the mean streets of the universe, I've seen enough elaborate schemes fall apart when the players forgot what was going on to know that straight forward is best. So when I tell you I went around looking like a clown, pretending to be a robot who was pretending to be a politician who was pretending to start a revolution, you can bet your last greasy mazuma it wasn't my idea. No, when I got shot at and molested and then forced to eat the last heir of "King Marfle", who wasn't actually a king, or even named Marfle, that was all the Doctor's fault.

Story: Maturity
Author: JaneTurenne
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2,337
Author's Summary: The Doctor learns, to his dismay, that carrying young companions comes with complications.
Characters/Pairings: Adric/Nyssa, implied Fifth Doctor/Ainley!Master, Tegan
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor's reactions and little asides to himself are adorably hilarious. The voices are spot on, the Doctor is just so repressed, and the Master is so obviously taken with him that he just goes along with whatever the Doctor says, albeit with a ton of snark. The whole thing is very entertaining, especially with Tegan being her no-nonsense, take-charge self.

I'm reccing a bit early to a) make up for reccing so late last night and b)because there's a chance of thunderstorms moving through later.

Now that I've started out with a New!Who rec, let's take a step into Classic!Who and the Fifth Doctor's era.

Story:  Best Enemies
Author: kittenmommy

Rating:  all ages/PG
Word Count: 10037/One shot
Author's Summary:  With the Doctor critically injured and unable to regenerate, Tegan and Turlough join with the Master in a desperate bid to save the Doctor's life.

Characters/Pairings: Tegan, Turlough, The Master(Ainley), 5th Doctor, 4th Doctor
Warnings:  Angst,
Recced because:  I've seen very little of the Fifth Doctor's era beyond what I've seen on YouTube and Time Crash.  However kittenmommy's story makes me feel like I have, crafting a story that shows the characters of that era without making me feel like I have to YouTube them to find out more about them before reading.  I also find the relationship that evolves between Tegan and the Master intriguing as well as the brief conversation between the Doctor and the Master.

Story: The Deathless
Author: stellar_dust
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3444
Author's summary It's 1895, and Jack meets someone who just might have the answers he's been seeking.
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Master, implied Fifth Doctor/Master
Warnings: none

Recced because: This story has a great dark and creepy feel to it, with the occasional flash of humor. I like the setting, and how the Master is worked into the plot:

The summer of 1895, Jack's main (in point of fact, only) competition on the unkillables circuit went by the imposing name of Koshey the Deathless.

Jack is operating on limited information while the reader knows more, which is very effective in several places in particular.

Story: Time and KAOS
Author: Danny_B
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 21,407 in seven chapters
Author’s Summary: Time-travel in the hands of terrorists is a terrible prospect, and one which the Doctor must stop at all costs. Fortunately, he has help: Maxwell Smart, agent 86 of Control. He's really in trouble this time.
Characters/Pairings: the Third Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, the Master (Ainley), Maxwell Smart, 99, the Daleks.
Warnings: None

Recced because: Those of you who have any passing familiarity with my own proclivities will not be surprised to find a Third Doctor fic this week, but when you add Ian Chesterton and a classic Maxwell Smart to the mix then stir well you’ve a real winner on your hands.

The cheesy malevolence of Get Smart’s KAOS is seeking the secret of time-travel and the author cleverly pegs not only the dialect of the bad guy mastermind Siegfried, but the well-intentioned cluelessness of Max as he deals with the flamboyance and confidence of the Third Doctor.  Add a middle-aged and confused Ian Chesterton and the Master, then top it all off with Susan in a  new and surprisingly believable regeneration and you have a brilliant day’s reading of cracky crossover entertainment ahead of you.   I expect a familiarity with the classic detective television show “Get Smart” would be very useful for full appreciation of this story, but it’s a grand romp to read either way.

Story:  The Ten Doctors
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 25,568
Author’s Summary: It was history’s greatest and most famous party.
Characters/Pairings: The first ten Doctors and Romana plus a wide assortment of companions, a couple of classic Masters and the Brigadier, toss well.
Warnings: None
Recced because: I nearly passed it over this time merely because JJPOR is a very popular author who had another well-deserved recommendation just last week (don’t miss that one either!), but decided we’d just let this be his month for a bounty of riches, goodness knows he’s given all of us enough reading enjoyment to deserve it.

This piece was written as a tribute for the 45th anniversary of the show and it quite appropriately is the sort of multi-Doctor fic that brings the reader back again and again for another round.  I expect nearly every writer has to give the “what would happen if all of the Doctors were together at once” scenario a try, but some are definitely better than others; this is one of the good ones and you won’t regret it for a moment.

In essence, Ten has decided that a doomed planet famous for having partied hard right up until the moment their sun went supernova would be the perfect setting for a gathering of his selves and as the guests arrive each and every one is so perfectly portrayed it is a complete delight.  Poor Susan making the best of a doting crowd of Grandfathers, Romana’s opinions regarding the appetizers and Six’s opinions regarding her plus the consequences of expressing those thoughts aloud are only a sprinkle of the stellar moments here, a fabulous panorama lightly sauced with punch.  As no doubt suspected, there are humorous moments but also a few snatches of adventurousness and even some serious and empathetic twists for the heart.

For the uninitiated to his works, JJPOR is a find indeed; a top-notch competent, imaginative and high quality writer whose stories never disappoint.  I highly recommend without reservation not only this particular bit of mildly cracky fancy, but any of his stories across the spectrum.  Enjoy the ride.

Story: Five Times Lord Braxiatel Had Occasion to Regret The Doctor’s Exile Very Deeply Indeed (And One Time He Wished The Doctor Would Just Sod Off Forever)
Author: x_los
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 8119
Author's summary: The Doctor is many things to many people, but to Irving Braxiatel he is the universe's most annoying little brother.
Characters/Pairings: Braxiatel, Susan, Delgado!Master, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Turlough, Ainley!Master, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn, Peri, Romana II, Leela, Eighth Doctor, Narvin
Warnings: spoilers for the Gallifrey audios in the final part

Recced because: It sucks to be the Doctor's older brother. It really, really sucks. And nobody knows that better than “Irving” Braxiatel. Luckily, nobody suffers quite as beautifully as Brax does, either, which is a good thing as this fic is pretty much as it says on a tin: an exercise in showing all the many ways that the Doctor has ruined Braxiatel's life. No, wait, let me rephrase that: all the many hilarious ways that the Doctor has ruined Braxiatel's life. Because this fic is one of the funniest I've read in a long while. And, oddly enough, it's one of the better character studies too.

The sound of a dematerialization made them all look towards the TARDIS–but she was showing no signs of immanent departure. Indeed her sturdy blue frame seemed to silently rebuke them for doubting her reliability. In the direction they’d all just turned from, someone coughed. In unison three heads swiveled back to the plant. A man in a human business suit hovered above the manzanita.

“You stop right there, Master, that plant is endangered!” Peri yelled, standing as if she planned to fight him off the bush.

“Peri,” the Doctor sighed, “not everyone who’s made unwise facial hair decisions and wants a chat with me is the Master. Sometimes it’s only Shakespeare, or, in this case, Irving Braxiatel.”

So okay, sorry about the delay. On to the rec!

Everything that [info]x_los has ever written is brilliant. EVERYTHING. But of course, some brilliant fics are more brilliant than others, and one of those extra-brilliant fics is The Crane Wife. If you like slave!fic, you will like this story. If you don't like slave!fic, you will probably like this story anyway.

Story:The Crane Wife
Author: x_los
Rating:  Adult
Word Count: 46282
Author's Summary: The Doctor, a half-human renegade Time Lord who's never so much as set foot on his father's home world, has had a really rotten day. As if dying weren't bad enough, now he's facing the auction block. The renegade Time Lord Emperor of Hestin makes an ill-starred impulse buy.
Characters/Pairings: AU Fifth Doctor / Ainley!Master.
Warnings: It's a WIP, but only has the last chapter to go. Also explicit sex involving domination and a few consent issues.

Recced because: One of my favorite genres of fic is the cliche-done-right. The one that makes you realize why a subject is cliche in the first place: because it's awesome. This story is sweet, and adorable, and really funny. The Doctor and the Master, despite being alternate-universe counterparts, come off pitch-perfect. The descriptions are wonderful, the plot's engaging and well-paced, and the sex is really, really hot. What more could you ask for, other than the final chapter?

Happy Friday!  We all need a little Doctor/Master fluff from time to time.  This story explores something that I consider canon, and I don't believe that DW has a lot of canon; the Master really does everything just to get the Doctor's attention.  Also . . . a planet full of intelligent otters who love ABBA?  It deserves a rec for that idea alone!
