Story: Adventures in Scientific Babysitting
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Rating: all ages
Word count: 200
Characters/pairings: Liz Shaw [and Kate Stewart]
Author's summary: When Liz Shaw babysits, the science is going to get done right.

Recced because: This is an adorable little drabble that I absolutely think must have canonically happened. I love the idea of companions remaining in each other's lives after they leave the Doctor, and it just fits perfectly to imagine that the Brigadier would ask his former colleague to look after his daughter, since in 'The Power of Three' she did say someone had taught her that 'science leads'.

Not going to bother with an excerpt because it's so short. Just go read it and smile.

Story: They

Rating: teen
Word Count: 2295
Author's Summary: Remarkably, the Doctor was the easy one.
Characters/Pairings: Gwen Cooper, Kate Stewart, Martha Jones
Warnings: none

Recced because: What a great year it was for Doctor Who in its fiftieth year. Lost episodes found, regenerations shown and so many new stories told. One of my favourite characters in the fiftieth special was Kate Stewart. After  her (re)introduction on the show I immediately went looking for fic, but sadly, there isn't much available. The Teaspoon hosts less than fifteen stories featuring her, of which 'They' is the newest addition. Luckily, it's a great story, featuring not just Kate, but many others, too. The dialogue (and it is mostly dialogue) is truly great, with lots of references and name dropping for the careful reader. It had me smiling, laughing and, at the end, almost crying.

'They' is a heartwarming story about 'them'; the people around the Doctor, those who stay on earth and do the very best they can do. It's about Kate Stewart working to get UNIT back on track, with Martha Jones and Gwen Cooper guiding her along the way. It is about Torchwood and UNIT and all those other people, who sometimes make the wrong choices and cannot travel back in time to put them right. It's also about the Doctor, and how he touches the lives of those around him: both of those who travel with him and those who don't. It's not pretty and it's not forgiving, but it's beautiful regardless (or perhaps because of that).

enjoy!
