Story: The Worst Doctor Who Story Ever
Author: Astrid
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 608
Author's Summary: For April Fools Day, I present something I wrote last year as a parody of all the bad Doctor Who fics (well, bad fics in general). I'm very sorry about this, I really am.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, The Master, Adric, Ace, Peri, Mel, Romana II, Sarah Jane (and more)
Warnings: none

Recced because: I laughed non-stop at this absurd yet accurate send up of badfic. We've all seen them- probably lurking in the dark corners of fanfiction.net: fics written as one endless paragraph, riddled with misspelled words, oblivious to punctuation or grammar. They usually feature a Mary Sue and some character bashing for good measure. This one ticks all those boxes perfectly, and I couldn't stop giggling as it hit every cliched trope in Doctor Who fandom over the head with a mallet. This fic is short, so the (intentionally) terrible formatting shouldn't be an obstacle to enjoying this hilarious parody. (And honestly the misspellings just make it funnier- I nearly lost it at 'Parry' and 'Ramona' LOL)

Author's Summary: Perivale, 1983: a thirteen-year-old girl runs from an all-too-real nightmare seeking the solace of an old house no one ever visits. What she finds is a house of dead things that aren't quite dead.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane
Warnings: Some spoilers for Ghost Light.

Recced because: In Ghost Light Ace returns to the scene of her worst memory: this is that worst memory played out in full and it's excellent and thoroughly unnerving – shivery-good.

Well, that didn't seem like two weeks, did it? If I didn't know better I'd say something was going on with space and time. As usual, my reccing stint has flown over and I didn't manage to post all of the fics I had on my list, which means I'll have to sign up again. I'd strongly recommend you to think about it too. I will leave you with this lovely bit of fluff, until next time:

Story: Time And Relatively Distracting Innuendo-related Scandals
Author: TheBigCat
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1,144
Author's Summary: A CIA agent was sent to bring Clara and Ashildr back to Gallifrey. That was the Time Lords’ first mistake.
Characters/Pairings: Ace, Ashildr/Me, Clara
Warnings: None

Recced because: I don't know about you, but I really liked Series 9/Season 35, and its ultimate ending, with the mostly-dead Clara and immortal "Me" taking off Doctor-like in a stolen TARDIS was, assuming they don't get revisited at some point, practically incitement to commit fanfic. What I like about this fic is that it takes its lead from that finale episode, but does so in a way that is more or less completely at odds with the generally heavy tone of the Twelfth Doctor's last round of adventures. It's not trying to make any big points about mortality, fate or the state of the universe, it's just silly, frothy, somewhat slashy and extremely amusing indeed. I for one was cackling quite a bit while reading it. Well, to be honest, I cackle quite a lot, but this made me cackle even more.

And the stroke of genius is the inclusion of the surprise guest character. Of course the restored Time Lords wouldn't just take the existence of a pair of living space-time anomalies careering recklessly around the universe lying down, of course they'd send an agent to hunt them down. Making that agent Ace, however, wins this fic several billion bonus points from me, and even makes a kind of sense in light of the long-ago 90s novel canon and/or John Nathan-Turner's reported brainwave of sending her to the Time Lord academy as a way of writing her out of the series during the Season 27 that never happened. Ace, as it turns out, isn't actually terribly good at hunting fugitives for the Celestial Intervention Agency, but given her deep anti-authoritarian streak it makes sense that she wouldn't actually be trying that hard. Indeed, she mainly seems to be interested in exchanging rather charged banter with her would-be quarries, and very funny it is too.

So if you're looking for something light and enjoyable to round off the weekend, this could well be the fic for you. Go and have a look and if you like it (I think many of you will) be sure to let the author know. And if you're like me, you'll be beaming to yourself for some time afterwards just at the bit where we find out who Gallifrey's new President is. I hope Chris Chibnall is of the same mind as this author!

Story: Full Moon, Full Moon
Author: TheBigCat
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4824
Author's Summary: In which the Doctor is an ex-chemistry teacher (recently fired), Ace might possibly be a werewolf, and they both sort out things with absolutely no explosives- which is a shock to both of them. (Survival AU)
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: N/A

Recced because:
It was a challenge deciding which of TheBigCat's many excellent fics to rec this week. She writes across eras and in a variety of styles and tones. Finally, I decided on Full Moon, Full Moon because:

1) it features Ace and Seven, one of my all-time favourite Doctor-Companion combos

and

2) it's wonderful and unique take on them unlike anything I've read elsewhere.

This is an AU, but how much of an AU is left up to the reader's imagination (is it a timeline which took a different path, or is it a completely different reality?). Ace is a werewolf (or, more accurately, a were-cheetah), and the Doctor is… a mystery wrapped in a puzzle tied with an enigma. He's a recently fired chemistry teacher. He may also be a Time Lord – or possibly a wizard. Who knows? This fic is full of questions without answers, but that's because the plot is less important than the magnificent, mentor-student friendship between Ace and her Professor, which is the same in any universe.

There is great dialogue, lovely descriptive prose (a lot of it about tea, and I had to make a cuppa while re-reading for this rec, because it kept making me thirsty), and loads of references to other companions/villains/past episodes for those who like spotting continuity nods. And, of course, there are lots of questions marks (not just on the Doctor's jumper) to keep you wondering what might happen next long after the fic is finished and the browser window closed.

Story: Pawn To Queen Three
Author: Lukry McLurklurk
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1168
Author's Summary: A little post-ep fic for Survival. Or maybe a grand unified theory of Time Lord telepathy.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a lovely missing scene for Seven and Ace, but more than that, it’s an amazing glimpse of how Time Lord minds and telepathy might work, all wrapped up in the metaphor of the Seventh Doctor’s favourite game: chess. I'm still pretty much in awe at the whole thing.

Have a snippet:

"All Time Lord brains have the same structure of the board, the same underlying matrix," the Doctor said. "It stays fixed even across regenerations, as each and every cell making it up renews itself. Which means--"

Ace interrupted gleefully as she grasped it. "That you can have the exact same pattern of pieces on there as someone else, at the same time."

"There are minor issues with how one defines 'same time' in such situations," the Doctor said. "But yes, that's how we can make contact. Even all the way across the universe."

"It's unlikely, of course," Ace went on, all but ignoring him. "Odds of squillions to one. So you must do it on purpose. You probably learn it at Time Lord School, in between Being Pretentious and double How To Avoid Giving Straight Answers.

Story: All Your Life Before You (The Natural Course of Events Remix)

Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3740
Author's Summary: Susan is perceiving many things she's never seen before. One of them is Ace.
Characters/Pairings: Susan Foreman/Ace McShane, First Doctor, Susan Q
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a gorgeous fic, written for the recent Remix challenge, with Susan’s time-sensitivity so beautifully painted throughout – the things she’s starting to see as she travels in time, and there’s something symbolic and circular in the first and last Classic Who companions encountering each other like this. It’s just wonderful and I had to rec it.

Have an extract:

She looks at Ace and gasps a little, because there's her timeline, too. Its beginning is carefully patterned, woven rigidly into some greater framework as if by an unseen craftsman, but before it reaches its end, it blossoms out into something fluid and free. And in the middle, there is a storm, an exuberant chaos, a turning place where it tangles up with Grandfather's life, and a small spot where it rests against Susan's own. It's bright and beautiful and confusing. Susan reaches out to touch it, and finds her fingers touching Ace's hair instead.

"Are you all right?" Ace says again. Her voice is quieter now, her brow furrowed a little in concern.

And, without warning, everything folds in on itself, pasts and futures collapsing down suddenly into one moment, two girls, and a bench.

Story: Fifteen Minutes
Author: TheBigCat
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4845
Author's Summary: Solving a murder mystery on a train? All in a day's work for the Doctor and Ace.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (7th), Ace
Warnings: Some mild murder/violence

Recced because: Well, it's no secret by now; I love the Seventh Doctor and Ace, both individually and collectively as they go about writing wrongs, fighting for justice and generally injecting a little anarchy into space and time. And this fic offers a fine example of them doing what they do best, unplugged, as it were; no aliens, no universe-threatening eeevills from the dawn of time, just a Professor and his eager pupil unable to stand by and let evil go unpunished and just too good at it for any hapless villain who isn't even an alien or an aforementioned eeevill to stand a chance (although comparatively small-scale evils are still, you know, evil and as far as Seven and Ace are concerned still need to be sorted out). Just to make it even more impressive, they do it all aboard a moving train carriage in the space of time it takes to get from one station to the next.

Even more than a lot of other Doctor-companion relationships, I think a big part of the appeal of Seven and Ace is their interactions with each other, the banter and conversation, the way there's always more to what they say to each other than simple exposition. It's the way they interact, more than anything, as well as the teacher/pupil relationship and the genuine bond of friendship and affection they have even as he's testing her half the time and the rest of the time they're lying to each other more often than not. This all shines through in this fic, with some delightful Seven-Ace repartee and all of the little quirks and tics you come to expect from the pair of them. Like most of the best Seven fiction (fan and otherwise) it's told from Ace's p.o.v. and manages to pack in a lot of subtle characterisation by showing the world through her unique lens. And the Seven portrayed here is, I would say, extremely Seven-ish, with some great little bits of business that you can imagine Sylvester McCoy carrying out with aplomb were this a scene from a television story.

Anyway, go over to Teaspoon and see what you think, and be sure to let the author know that you like it (because I'm sure you will).

Story: The Revolution Will Not Be Analysed
Author: JJPOR
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 2257
Characters: Ace, Seven
Summary: From up here, she could watch the city burn.
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's Seven and Ace exactly the way they should be. A simile that compares the doctor to a slam poet, Ace reading Hannah Arendt, and a serious reflection on that oft-ignored point - what happens after the Doctor leaves in his TARDIS. The revolution itself is drawn vividly, with tantalizing hints dropped about the state of affairs before the pair arrived, even though the focus is firmly on Ace and the Doctor. Ace's perspective is lively and fascinating - she's written as the intelligent, observant character she is. The seventh doctor plays devil's advocate and teacher, forcing Ace to question and defend what they do everyday. The answers she comes to - are interesting, especially in light of the poem the fic takes it name from.

Story: The Doctor Cooks (The Eleventh Time Lucky Remix)
Author: paranoidangel
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3264
Author's Summary: The Doctor offers to cook dinner for Amy and Rory. What could go wrong?
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond/Rory Williams, First Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Susan Foreman, Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot, Third Doctor, Jo Grant, Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Fifth Doctor, Tegan Jovanka, Nyssa, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane, Eighth Doctor, Charley Pollard, Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble.
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor claims he can cook. Actually, as it turns out, the Doctor has always claimed that he could cook. This fic starts off with the Eleventh Doctor promising to cook a special meal for Amy and Rory, and then moves on to a series of flashbacks that show past Doctors, past companions, and past culinary (mis)adventures. Much of it is very funny, but there is also a wonderful depth to the writing, especially in the framing story of Eleven, Amy, and Rory.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2284
Author's Summary: A Dresden Files/Doctor Who crossover posted with permission from Kesomon, for whom it was written.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Seven, Ainley!Master, Harry Dresden
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor being Merlin is a running joke throughout the series I particularly enjoy, mostly because it’s a case where the Doctor is as ignorant of the rest of us (since, presumably, the time when he plays Merlin is in his personal timeline’s future) and so he’s stuck playing catch-up. Seven is my favorite instance of this trope as well because Seven casts himself as a puppet-master who always has all the pieces. This fic takes a play on the title Merlin and crosses Seven into the Dresden Files universe, where the main character (Harry Dresden) is the black sheep member of the White Council of Wizards, whose leader holds the title Merlin (the historical Merlin having been the creator and first leader of said council). Add an escaped Cheetah!Master who decides to prey upon the wrong jogger and you get this fic, where a confused Harry makes Seven tap-dance his way out of mucking up several timelines at once. Well worth a morning read.

Story: No Longer a Sidekick
Author: Annariel
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5930
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Clyde Langer, Fitz Kreiner, Rani Chandra, Samantha Jones, Sarah-Jane Smith
Author's Summary: How did Fitz Kreiner rebuild his life after he left the Doctor? Particularly when aliens will keep interrupting his plans.

Recced Because:

Fitz Kreiner is messed up beyond all belief, and he can't take two steps without wandering into trouble or making a horrible mistake, but for all his flaws, he's also very likeable and much more competent than he gives himself credit for.

Some unspecified time after the EDAs finish, Fitz leaves the Doctor and aimlessly drifts his way onto Sarah-Jane's couch, claiming that he's given up saving the universe and being a sidekick. With a little help from Sarah-Jane, the Bannerman Road gang, a gang of angry Ogron's, and a woman with a time travelling motorbike, he realizes that only half that claim is true.

This fic seamlessly blends canons and timelines from different corners of the Whoniverse. The dialogue is sometimes painful and sometimes hilarious, but always spot on. The details of time and place are richly imagined. The characters live and breathe. And Fitz is perfectly imperfect and compelling as he bumbles his way (with many friendly but forceful nudges) towards accepting his past and making a new beginning.

Author's Summary: They meet ten years later, and perhaps by chance—but Ace knows that she won't let this chance simply pass her by. And so she doesn't.

Recced Because:

It's chicken soup for the soul.

In canon, Mel goes off with Glitz and who knows what happens to Ace. This fic picks up ten years later. It doesn't try to explain what happened in the interval, only that Mel is back on Earth now and Ace is running a charity. They meet by chance. Then they keep meeting on purpose.

This is a beautiful bit-by-bit romance, which grows organically with Mel and Ace slowly coming to the conclusion that all of their friends, and neighbours, and co-workers reached almost from the beginning. It's Ace appreciating Mel for her voice and crazy hair, not in spite of them. It's Mel solving problems. It's Ace making explosions. It's afternoons at the movies and walks in the park. It's the small moments which don't seem significant on their own, but, cumulatively, have more power than all the Nitro-9 in the universe. It's two people falling in love and it's beautiful.

Author's Summary: A rather dark story in which Ace is slowly taken over by the Cheetah virus from Survival.
Characters/Pairings: Seven, Ace
Warnings: Dub!con, allusions to self harm

Recced because: This... isn't the kind of thing I usually rec, I'll admit. It is dark, and sad, and terrifying, and I swear the first time I read it - even though Seven isn't a Doctor I know well - I stopped breathing and sat on the edge of my teeth. I can't speak for characterisation, but they are consistent, and the edgy, uncanny valley effect in the character's thoughts really throws you off guard. It's a great story for this run up to Halloween, but by no stretch of the word a happy one.

Recced Because:

Awwww, who's a kitty! Mostly the Doctor. Though several companions, enemies, and by-standers are also affected by acute Felis Catus Temporus in this adorable sequence of fic which answers several important, kitty-related questions such as: What happens when K-9 meets a kitty? Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Other Character(s), The Doctor (7th)
Warnings: Crossover, General, Humor

Recced because: Well, we've already established that I love humor. Quirky humor at that. And no one can do quirky like the Boys from the Dwarf. This is just completely silly and utterly delightful. All seen from the POV of the Red Dwarf crew, it immerses you in the fiction before you've half realized you are hooked and it draws you helplessly towards the end, even as Lister, Rimmer and the Cat have you banging your face repeatedly against immovable objects (such as a handy desk). Of course, they do that anyway - so all those familiar with Red Dwarf have learned to have plenty of self-heating sake on hand, a high tolerance for self-inflicted pain and a mild resistance to rib-breakage from laughter.

The author claims to not be on their best form, but I very much beg to differ. This fiction is a good time to anyone with a sense of humor. The basics of the Red Dwarf are laid out for you (if you are unfamiliar with them), as the story goes and even if you are familiar with the characters, they are just funny reminders of the overall situation. Perfectly balanced, silly, hilarious - and the reaction of the Doctor and Ace to the Boys is made even funnier just because...ACE...and SEVEN. If you are ever going to read a cross-over, this is a good one to start with. And if you happen to be fond of the X-Over Genre, this is twice the treat in one fiction.

Just a small sample... )

It is quite easy to forget that the companions change the Doctor just as much as he changes them, and that is why I love this fic. It clearly shows the delicate relationship between the two, while also paying homage to the fact that the companions are amazing and usually go on to be amazing after their time in the TARDIS. The last line is a nice touch too, with the Doctor portrayed not as the all-knowing Time Lord, but the wanderer, the traveller who marvels at the beauty and mystery of the universe.

Today is something lighter after yesterday's angst.

Story: Awkward Questions
Author: Gary Merchant
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 996
Author's Summary: Not even the Doctor can answer everything.
Characters:Adric, Grace Holloway, Ian Chesterton, Jamie McCrimmon, Nyssa, The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (7th), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th)

Recced because:It's a play on the numerous (intentional) plot holes and is-it-canon-or-not-canon-questions all Whovians have to deal with at some point. With fifty years of series, not everything always makes sense. Two events from the history of the show can completely contradict each other and still both be awesome (a big cheer for timey-wimey stuff!). This fic takes that fact and runs with it, exploring 8 different scenes from Doctors 1 to 8 with humour and wit. The scenes used here are (in)famous throughout the fandom, and reading about them brought a knowing smile to my face. It's under a thousand words, so even if you're in a hurry, check it out. And if you like it, there is a sequel too!

Story: Ten Times the Doctor Hates the Daleks
Author: Derek Metaltron
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2,871
Author's Summary: Across ten incarnations the Doctor has faced a enemy who has cost him friends and allies, planets and stars, his very home world. They are the Daleks, and these are ten tales of how he has learnt to hate them.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctors (1st to 10th), various companions and supporting characters, Davros and the Daleks
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'll admit to something of a fannish obsession with the Daleks. Not so much the Daleks as we see them most of the time on screen, but the idea of the Daleks. Because it really is a great concept, and a fantastically horrible one when you really think about it. Which I have, probably a bit too much. The thing about the Daleks, however, while I obviously reject vehemently the idea current in fandom that it's possible to see them too often in the series, is that they rarely live up to the power of the concept in their TV outings. Often they fill a role that could be played by any generic aliens and/or robots with a bit of a search-and-replace on the script. And that, I often find, is where good fanfic comes in.

Whether the Daleks obsess the rest of you as much as they do me or not (I suspect not, in most cases!), they do occupy a unique place in the history of Doctor Who, both in-universe and in terms of the lifespan of the series itself. They're the original Who monsters, and still the benchmark against which new pretenders are measured. Even the Cybermen, probably the second most iconic Who monsters, were originally an attempt to find "the next Daleks". And in story terms, the Doctor already had an ultimate archenemy - he knew it and perhaps more importantly they knew it - long before the Master ever showed up and started telling people to obey him. I'll be very disappointed if they don't play a prominent role in the 50th Anniversary story.

And this excellent fic meditates upon that idea, the pivotal and perhaps unique role the Daleks have played in the Doctors lives, through examining the way the Doctor reacts to them. I don't think it's unwarranted to talk, as the fic does, about the Doctor hating the Daleks. Look at Nine's spitting fury in the new series episode Dalek for Exhibit A. We perhaps don't like to think as fans about the Doctor hating anybody, he's meant to be better than that and to hold himself to a higher standard - and the fic explores that as well. As much as the Doctor has been subjected again and again to the Daleks' ingrained evil, their murderous and destructive deeds again and again, he still doubts that giving in to hating them, and doing to them what that implies, is something he should be doing. It's the same moral dilemma posed by the famous scene from Genesis - does he have that right? Does feeling for them what they feel for him make him as bad as they are? This fic examines that idea through the eyes of all ten Doctors extant at the time it was written, and comes back to that essential truth about the Doctor and his relationship with his greatest enemies. As much as they've done, and as much as he's seen of that, as much pain as they've caused him, at the end he is better than they are, in moral terms, so he'll always have that doubt, and always hold back, and end up always having to fight them again.

It's a fic I really like, anyway. Please go and read it, and please leave some words for the author.

Title: Invisible Road
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2376
Author's Summary: It. Is. Defended.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: A creative and lyric re-telling of modern legends with familiar faces, from a truly alien perspective. The world-building of Sycorax culture is fantastic and the POV is inspired and the legend . . . well, it's one that will have you cheering and crying and everything in between. Absolutely, it's what Ace's charity is all about, and it's what she's done in her time since leaving the Doctor. Brilliant OCs and the first person narrative really bring this gem of a story to life.

Story: Vox et Praeterea Mysteria
Author: johne
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3733
Author’s Summary: She's a teenage rebel with a taste for explosives. She's a voice with an Internet connection. Together, they fight terrorists!
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane/Oswin Oswald
Warnings: None

Recced because: Okay, I admit it, I have long carried an enormous girlcrush on Ace. This is the woman who brings a rope ladder and homemade explosives with her on Doctor-related adventures. This is the woman who waltzes through her one encounter with the Daleks and gives no flips, because she can just beat them up with her electrified baseball bat, or blow them up with her Nitro-9, or – oh, kind UNIT solider, is that rocket launcher for me? It is?

Then the show introduced Oswin Oswald, who I immediately fell down and worshipped as The Second Coming of Ace. They’re snarky, they’re competent, and they’re not going to let a bunch of rolling salt shakers with eggbeaters for hands get them down, amirite?

And then amazing author johne had them team up to fight terrorists, with sass, verve and style. The poor terrorists never stood a chance.

Story: A Winter's Tale
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 8164
Author's Summary: In the deep midwinter, frosty winds will blow, but for the Doctor and Ace it's just another day at the office. Or is it?
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (7th), Ace
Warnings: n/a

Recced because: This is one of those fics where I had to check and recheck to make sure it hadn't been recced before.  It's that good.  Seven and Ace do Christmas, but it's thoughtful and sensitive and manages to steer clear of the more cloying sentimentality that sometimes pervades seasonal stories.  From an aborted outing to a perfect Dickensian Christmas to a trip to the Western Front in December 1914, Seven and Ace consider the nature of the holiday and what it really means.  Seven is as mysterious as ever: glimpses of his underlying darkness come through subtlely but undeniably, and his relationship with Ace is ultimately adorable but still tinged with manipulation.  A wonderful story for two complex characters.

Story: Illusions
Author: DameRuth
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1934
Author's Summary: Sometimes we deceive ourselves as much as we deceive others.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s just gorgeously done, pitch perfect Ace and Seven, something that’s still all too rare in fic. What more can I say? In surprisingly few words, there’s an intense action-packed scene, an intriguing alien enemy, some danger and explosions and plenty of running – and a little moment of truth for the Doctor and Ace to contemplate. Wicked.

Recced because: It's a short fic with a lovely moment between the Seventh Doctor and Ace that shows how much they care about each other.

Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1659
Author's Summary: The night after Fenric, Ace asks a question.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, The Doctor (7th)
Warnings: None
Recced because: This is a lovely coda after the somewhat abrupt end of "The Curse of Fenric." It's sweet in a quiet, subtle way that makes sense for the characters, neither of whom are terribly touchy-feely, and despite its short length it is very thoughtful. It's also really keen observation of the characters, and a little bit of a celebration of the things to love about Ace. And the end is unexpected and really perfect.

Story: dreamings of meetings
Author: aces
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 4133
Author's Summary: Hex, in “The Settling”: I thought I saw lemon trees in the library…or maybe I dreamt them.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Hex Schofield, The Doctor (7th), The TARDIS
Warnings: None
Recced because: It's hard to describe this story without spoiling it. I suppose I can say that Hex comes aboard the TARDIS, and clever scenes of his getting to know the ship and its inhabitants are alternated with vivid depictions of the mysterious dreams he begins to have. The imagery is gorgeous, the exploration of the TARDIS is lovely, and the atmosphere is wonderfully dreamy.

Story: Dig Deep For Victory! (The High Explosives Mix)
Author: Palgrave
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2193
Author's Summary: The Brigadier doesn't think he'll survive having Ace as a houseguest. He's pretty certain his flowerbeds won't. (Post-episode for "Battlefield")
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Doris Lethbridge-Stewart, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: First, this entertaining fic includes my favorite Doctor/companion team (though the Doctor doesn't appear until near the end) plus the Brigadier. Second, it provides plenty of interaction between Ace and the Brigadier, which I really wanted after watching Battlefield a few weeks ago. I was thinking about how those two characters might get along if they had more time to get to know each other, and that's what this fun story depicts. I also love the inclusion of Doris, who only rarely appears in fanfic.

Author's Summary: Seven, Ace and Hex have a nice evening out.
Characters/Pairings: Seven, Ace, Hex
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is just the loveliest little story. When I first read it, my comment was that I wanted to pinch its cheeks and give it kisses, which is still true. Everyone is lovingly in character, there's a little mystery, Ace and Hex are just the right canon-level of shippy, and there's dancing - delightful. Even if you're not familiar with Hex from the audios, this is a great adventure to "meet" him in!

Story: Chasing Memories
Author: paranoidangel
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 15,080
Author's Summary: When Ian and Barbara return home in a Dalek ship, they're relieved to find it's the day they left. However, they soon find that a two year absence coupled with the dangers lurking around Coal Hill School means they're not going to be able to go back to their old lives that easily. AU from the end of The Chase.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, Ace, Seven
Warnings: none

Recced because: I’m not always fond of AUs, unless they actually do something clever with the original source material. This definitely fits that bill. This story starts from one tiny tweak to canon - Ian and Barbara returning home on time, rather than two years later. Doesn’t seem like much, but there are major repercussions since they are two years older and removed from their previous lives, and these are interestingly explored in the story. And then there’s the fact Remembrance of the Daleks is about to happen at Coal Hill School... All of the characterizations in this story are great, and I especially love the Ian/Barbara romance, of course, but there’s also Ian and Ace making Nitro-9 together, and Ian and Barbara getting to help smash up some Daleks with Seven and Ace is always awesome times. It’s a long story, but definitely worth your time!
