Story: Purpose
Author: TheBigCat
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3590
Author's Summary: “Now do you see? Bernice Summerfield must die. Can’t you see that she needs to die?”
Characters/Pairings: Bernice Summerfield, Irving Braxiatel, Other Characters
Warnings:  None

Recced because: I have recently gotten into the Bernice Summerfield series of audios and on my search for fics for them, came across this.  This story is intense and exciting; with a unique style that wouldn't feel out of place within the canon of the audios.

Title: 'Til Ancient Alien Ceremony Do Us Part
Author: aralias
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1798
Author's Summary: Jason accidentally forgets to tell Benny that if she puts on the nice bracelet he's just 'bought' for her, they'll become soulbonded. Possibly forever. And, er, maybe hear each other's thoughts. Possibly forever. Benny is not pleased. (Set around series 3 of the audio series.)
Characters/Pairings: Bernice Summerfield, Jason Kane, Braxiatel
Warnings: Swearing

Recc'ed Because: I feel bad for poor Benny, but I love the humor and snappy dialogue in this story. I am not overly familiar with the audios, but I know Benny enough to tell she is well in character, and [livejournal.com profile] aralias does a good job fleshing enough of the series details out in the story that it still works if you don't know much of the canon. Good intentions go awry in this story, but then again, when Braxiatel is involved, it's never easy to tell what the intentions really are.

Story: The Inestimable Value of a Good Pair of Shoes
Author: aces
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3531
Author's Summary: Harry Sullivan, a man who knows the fine art of shoe loss and replacement.
Characters/Pairings: Bernice Summerfield, Harry Sullivan, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (8th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I might be biased, since it was written for me in a ficathon, but then it is Harry fic in characters, so what's not to like? It's a fun tale of various times when Harry lost his shoes and never puts him down. He gets to meet a couple of characters from other eras along the way, so it's interesting to see how he interacts with them. It's just wonderfully characterised and fun.

Story: Ten Times The Doctor (Almost) Got Hitched
Author: vvj5
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5549
Author's summary:You wouldn't believe how difficult it is for a passing Time Lord not to get married to famous historical women completely by accident. Seriously. Happens all the time.
Characters/Pairings: *takes deep breath* First Doctor/Cameca, Second Doctor/Mary, Queen of Scots, Third Doctor/Jane Austen, Fourth Doctor/Florence Nightingale, Fifth Doctor/Joan of Arc, Sixth Doctor/Boadicea, Seventh Doctor/Charlotte Bronte, Eighth Doctor/Christabel Pankhurst, Ninth Doctor/Elizabeth Woodville, Tenth Doctor/Elizabeth I, Ben, Polly, The Brigadier, Liz Shaw, Sarah Jane Smith, Harry Sullivan, Tegan Jovanka, Vislor Turlough, Evelyn Smythe, Benny Summerfield, Charley Pollard, Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness
Warnings: Real Person/Fictional Person Het

Recced because: Just knowing that this fic exists fills me with unholy glee. It's the sort of thing that I was hoping someone would write after last fall's Children In Need preview scene and I was so happy to find out that someone did. Every single one of the ten scenes that make up this fic is brilliant in its own way and every single character is drawn as if from life. The Sixth Doctor bit is especially hilarious. I also loved the Seventh Doctor bit for Benny's diary entries and the Third Doctor bit for containing one of my own personal ships. They're all good bits, however. Highly recommended for everyone.

Well, the week is almost over already, but I’ve still got one brilliant story to go…

Story: The First Casualty
Author:Lurky McLurklurk
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5255
Author's Summary: Benny's latest escapade leads to a meeting with a certain Fitz Kreiner.
Characters/Pairings: Bernice Summerfield, Fitz Kreiner
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s witty and fun, both a proper archaeological space adventure and a story that will make you laugh. And, please don’t run away because it’s two characters from spin-off media. Benny is introduced here at her wittiest, as she picks up her own almost-companion (who, absolutely wonderfully, is not what she seems) and the encounter with Fitz merely provides the perfect anti-climax to Benny’s spot of derring-do. It’s a quest to save (or possibly doom) a planet and it’s worth reading whatever era you favour, because it does it with style and it‘s entertaining from start to finish.

Story: Deep Focus
Author: Pete Galey
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 62,564
Author's Summary: Benny, Chris and Roz help the Doctor decide what to do when a priceless work of art falls into his hands. While they're distracted, something very important is stolen: themselves.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Bernice Summerfield, Christopher Cwej, Ros Forrester
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: This is a long fic. A very long fic. And I'm starting with this "warning" because I usually feel exasperation at seeing such high word count and don't read the story. And yet, I've read this story at one sitting. The author's comment says this was an attempt at writing an original New Adventure. Well, it was, to my opinion, a complete success. This story starts as a series of small hints and pieces being thrown at the reader, but in a very well-thought way: the plot isn't at all obvious and yet not far-fetched, and the moment the penny dropped my response was "OH!" and it still felt completely satisfying (and really, I'm not just squeeing over the plot because my plotting tends to be fuzzy round the edges at the best of times...:)). Not to give too much away about the plot, our four heroes find themselves in a middle of nowhere without the Tardis, and have to understand what's going on around them - and survive it. The mystery is excellent, the character voices are spot on, and the feel is that of an authentic NA: it doesn't try to be an episode, but instead plays on the strength of a written story. Oh, and the prologue/ epilogue are properly haunting and touching, too. A must read for NA fans - and actually, not just NA fans.

Story: Secret Lives
Author: dblauvelt
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2327
Author's Summary: Bernice explores Wolsey's past lives.
Characters/Pairings: Bernice Summerfield, Wolsey.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: This fic is ridicliously funny! Benny is bored and uses the Doctor's present to entertain herself. Wolsey does not appriciate this. If you want a good laugh, this is the fic for you!

Story:Surprise!
Author:vvj5
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 766
Author's Summary: Seven and Benny are alone in the dark and in trouble. Business as usual, dear diary, except for one small detail.
Characters/Pairings: Benny, 7th Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: In their author info, vvj5 says that Seven is their Doctor. Seven is my Doctor too, and I like this little fic for its serious silliness, the friendship between Benny and Seven, the yeti and the ending. Bonus points if you remember that Benny's middle name is surprise! I'd like to add a bonus rec in here for vvj5's series about the hidden corners of the Tardis, which can be found here!

Story: The Catbird Seat
Author:[livejournal.com profile] ghost2
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 365
Author's Summary: Written for the kinkmeme. Prompt was: "The missing Doctor/Benny sex from the end of The Dying Days. The cat watches or joins in." Wolsey observes the Doctor and Benny.
Characters/Pairings: Bernice Summerfield, Eighth Doctor, Wolsey the Cat
Warnings: Hilarity

Recced because: I like to rec a kinkmeme story on fridays because I think everyone should have a little porn at the end of the week. This particular story is a bit short on the porn, but it's utterly brilliant anyway. Exactly as it says on the tin, this is a quickie from the POV of Wolsey the Cat. And considering the author says she has no cat, the perfection of Wolsey's voice is even more amazing.

OK, so two Ace stories today after two Fitz stories yesterday (this is all entirely coincidental, I promise), but this is a nice contrast to the apocalyptic nature of yesterday's rec:

Story: Morning Has Broken
Author: Gabriel Chase
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 400
Author's Summary: Ever wonder how to determine when it's morning aboard a time machine? Ace has found a way.
Characters/Pairings: Ace, Benny, Seven
Warnings: None

Recced because: The NAs are often perceived as being full of darkness and companions barely getting along with the Doctor and so on, and it's not a wholly inaccurate picture, but it's not the whole story either. This lovely bit of fluff (and I don't mean that in a derogatory way at all, good fluff is great) shows a lighter side to the classic NA TARDIS team of Seven, Benny, Ace, whilst remaining perfectly in character for all of them.

Story: The Not So Unlikely Saga of Fitz Kreiner
Author: aces
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1159
Author's Summary: 5 companions Fitz almost married.
Characters/Pairings: Ace, Bernice Summerfield, Donna, Fitz, Hex, Jack Harkness, Susan.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Everyone needs a little hilarity on a Monday, and this piece fits the bill. There aren't nearly enough stories written for book and audio companions, and this one has both which makes it even more delightful. Originally written for [livejournal.com profile] churchontime, it's precisely as stated in the summary and every bit as ridiculous as you'd think it would be.

a small taste... )

Rec: Verity

Story: Verity
Author: whispersecho
Rating: None given (Gen)
Author's Summary: Inspired by and shamelessly filking bits from Paul Cornell's NA Human Nature... also contains spoilers for Love and War and Sanctuary. Right...I think it's really finished this time.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane, Benny Summerfield, (Seven/Ace)
Warnings: None
Word Count: 8,419

Recced because: The story of the Doctor becoming John Smith and falling in love with Joan Redfern originally belonged to the Seventh Doctor, and included his companion Benny. Whisperecho brilliantly takes the original story and adds back what is missing - Ace. Ace shows up at the school, not knowing the the Doctor has used the arch to turn human. John Smith doesn't know Ace, but his psyche has incorporated her memory into his past in a very interesting (and telling) way. Lovely and true to character. Though it references a couple of the books you don't have to know them - just that at some point Ace left Seven to travel on her own, and misses him.

A little hint of what is to come. )

Story: In Which Ace and Hex Done Sex
Author: Kesomon
Rating: Not given, but I'd estimate it as All Ages
Word Count: 306
Author's Summary: Title says it all.
Characters/Pairings: Ace, Hex, Bernice Summerfield
Warnings: None

Recced because: Kesomon points out at the top of the story that it's crack and it is: good crack. It does involve moving events around a bit to make it work, but the payoff is worth it. No excerpt for this one, and I am avoiding saying much about the story because it is so short that anything I do say would give the whole thing away. Just bear in mind that the title and the summary may or may not be misleading.

Story: Crumble Cake
Author: merripestin
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1,049
Author's Summary: Ace/Benny; it's time they learned to share. [NA continuity somewhere between Deceit and TLHH]
Characters/Pairings: Benny/Ace, Seven
Warnings: graphic sex

Recced because: It's not always pleasant, but it is always visceral.

I admit I'm missing huge chunks of NA lore, most of my exposure to these two coming from audio for Benny and TV/audio for Ace, but stick these two in a trench, as Merripestin's done—especially if it's the umpteenth trench—and, oh, yes, this is an extrapolation I can see.

There's sex, and at 1,049 words, you wouldn't think there'd be room for much more, but the author makes this micro war into a quick, skewering little character study and ensures we're never bored. "Crumble Cake" runs on all the tensions cropping up between companions learning about the unglamorous side of travel: constant danger, constant inconstancy, and all in constant proximity to the inscrutable, inhuman figure of the Doctor. Call it a candid capture.

Story: Pretenders
Author: ponygirl
Rating: None, but I'd call it Teen
Word Count: 2,115
Author's Summary: Professor Bernice Summerfield isn't the only pretender.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness/Benny Summerfield
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is definitely an unusual pairing, but a surprisingly well-matched one. A pre-"Empty Child" Jack meets up with unlucky-in-love companion Benny, and drinking – much drinking – ensues, followed by seduction and the sort of morning-after experience you might expect when a con man is involved. Read this one not for the amusingly written sex scene, but rather for the perfect characterization: Jack's smooth suavity, and Benny's interior monologue questioning whether a one-night stand is really a good idea.
