Story: The Worst Doctor Who Story Ever
Author: Astrid
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 608
Author's Summary: For April Fools Day, I present something I wrote last year as a parody of all the bad Doctor Who fics (well, bad fics in general). I'm very sorry about this, I really am.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, The Master, Adric, Ace, Peri, Mel, Romana II, Sarah Jane (and more)
Warnings: none

Recced because: I laughed non-stop at this absurd yet accurate send up of badfic. We've all seen them- probably lurking in the dark corners of fanfiction.net: fics written as one endless paragraph, riddled with misspelled words, oblivious to punctuation or grammar. They usually feature a Mary Sue and some character bashing for good measure. This one ticks all those boxes perfectly, and I couldn't stop giggling as it hit every cliched trope in Doctor Who fandom over the head with a mallet. This fic is short, so the (intentionally) terrible formatting shouldn't be an obstacle to enjoying this hilarious parody. (And honestly the misspellings just make it funnier- I nearly lost it at 'Parry' and 'Ramona' LOL)

Author's summary: "I am rather fond of you," the Doctor said, in an unexpected fit of post-coital affection.
Warnings: none

Recced because: I don't even ship Four/Romana, but this fic was so funny I was willing to go with it. The Doctor and Romana's pillow talk in this is hilariously droll and full of witty jabs at both Time Lord society and their own relationship, and perfectly in character. I could hear both their voices clearly in this dialogue, which is no small feat considering how the banter between Four and Romana I was some of the best of any Doctor & companion team, IMO. It was lovely to hear the flavor of that recreated here. A delightful (if mildly NSFW) read.

Recced because: It has Twelve, Romana and some space pirates? What more do you want in a fic? And yes, it is every bit as much fun as that sounds, particularly all the Doctor-Romana banter. It’s sweet, smart and silly in all the right ways - very like our show (and its hero).

In this fic, the Romana II of canon, the one who left the (Fourth) Doctor to do work in E-Space, leaves E-Space for Gallifrey, only to find this Romana I in this fanfic, one that never regenerated and stayed on Gallifrey.

Characters/Pairings: Romana II, Rose Tyler
Warnings: None

Recced because:

There is a whole genre of Who fics devoted to the question of "What happened to Rose?" and another whole cascade asking, "And what about Romana?" This fic lives where the Ven Diagram of those two questions intersect. It plays with themes of time and fate. It isn't really about Rose as The Bad Wolf, but does a lot with that theme and uses it in ways that I haven't seen elsewhere. It uses emotions the way an artist uses colour. There are moments of aching loneliness, nostaligia, joy, hope, and punch-to-the-gut sorrow. It's very difficult to describe without giving too much away. But it's a short read, and one I'm recommending to anyone who enjoys Rose, Romana, or Timey-Wimey fic in general.

Well, these two weeks have gone by just as quickly as they usually do, which is to say in a flash, and my reccing stint is nearly over. I didn't get the chance to post as many recs as I would have liked, but I hope there'll be a next time to remedy that. In the meantime, allow me to leave you with this excellent fic:

Story: Nor Grave Nor Bed Denied
Author: LizBee and Branwyn
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2,343
Author's Summary: In the wake of the destruction of Skaro, Romana receives a visitor.
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, The Doctor (7th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: As you may have noticed only the other day, I remain as obsessed by Doctor/Romana as I ever have been, and by that murky period between Survival and Rose which presumably led up to the Time War and which may or may not have been accurately depicted in the 90s novels. This ticks all of those boxes, as well as hinting strongly at Seven/Romana, which as far as I'm concerned is second only to Four/Romana in terms of being right up my fannish alley. ...so to speak.

This fic also takes its lead from the audio story The Apocalypse Element, with which you may or may not be familiar (it's very good, btw, if you ever get the chance to listen). I don't think you need to be to work out very quickly what the backstory is. In some ways not knowing and going only on the hints provided in the fic makes Seven and Romana's somewhat difficult conversation here even more strained and effective. And what a conversation it is; I love the way the two characters are portrayed here, both older and wiser and more damaged than they were in their heyday together, still with that connection but with so much pain and baggage by now to go with it. I think there's an understandable tendency in fanfic to idealise the character relationships that appeal to us and to disregard the fact that real relationships, however idyllic, invariably have their ups and downs and messy patches. This treatment of the Doctor and Romana is all the more commendable for not falling into the trap while also clearly having a lot of affection for both characters and their shared history.

There may be a hint of the far more difficult relationship the Doctor and Romana had in the EDA novels, which isn't one of my favourite choices that those novels made, but even that shows and honesty and willingness to face up to the less comfortable part of Who "canon" that adds to the strength of the story. Most of all, they are portrayed as two characters who are at the point in their association where they cannot fool each other at all, however much they might want to, and who are both well aware of that fact.

All this and numerous little nods to various bits of Who lore established in several different versions of continuity. You may know by now that I'm a sucker for that sort of thing and prepared to award all the bonus points to anything that acknowledges the weirdness that is LOOOMS!

So once again I urge to you head over to the Teaspoon post haste and read this rather spiffing fic, and then to be sure to leave words of appreciation for the author. And that, for now, is my work here done.

Story: World's End
Author: Doctor Tam
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1,327
Author's Summary: The end of the Time War.
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, The Doctor (8th)
Warnings: Some violent war/disaster imagery.

Recced because: This fic takes me back. It speaks very clearly to my inner fanboy, who remains obsessed with Doctor/Romana and unhealthily interested in just what the heck went down in the Last Great Time War.

It's a bit shocking to think that it's almost a whole two years since the 50th Anniversary, and now more than ten years since the revival of Who in 2005. And for most of the time in between those two milestones, those of us who were interested in the Time War, arguably the main innovation introduced by RTD in terms of shaking up the Whoniverse, didn't really know much about it. There were hints, vague suggestions of things like the fall of Arcadia or the Nightmare Child, that intrigued more than they explained. So we thought about it, and extrapolated, and made things up, and wrote a great many fics about it that were pretty much comprehensively Jossed by The Day of the Doctor. Which was not a bad thing because if you ask me The Day of the Doctor was absolutely fantastic. Being Jossed was a price well worth paying for that.

And I'll bet Steven Moffat didn't ask himself whether he had that right before he did it either...

So in that sense this fic is a blast from the past (indeed it dates from 2009). In another sense, if you squint a bit, the Doctor portrayed here taking his leave from Romana in Gallifrey's last moments could just as easily be the War Doctor as Eight. I think a lot of us always thought though that the idea of Eight of all Doctors being placed in that terrible position just seemed right, in some poetic sense, just as the notion that it would have been the Lady President Romana sending him on that fatal mission seemed too terribly perfect not to be true. The End of Time Jossed that one, of course, and while I personally don't hold that story in the same regard as The Day of the Doctor, that too was a price worth paying for the possibility of a still-living Romana, out there, somewhere...

Enough about my fannish predilections anyway. This is a very nice fic indeed, and extremely well written. It puts you the reader right in that hellish moment before the End and manages to explore the characters of the Doctor and Romana, their thoughts about and differing relationships with regard to their homeworld and their duties to it within a very economical word count. It explores the Doctor's role in and responsibility for the War and associated events, and how his association with Romana has affected both of them and led directly to the position in which they currently find themselves. As a fan with a lot of affection for that particular relationship, I find this story and its portrayal of what is almost certainly their final parting very touching indeed.

There is one line (no, not the one about Ace; as much as it pains me, thinking up horrible fates for Ace is pretty much a standard feature in all fiction, official and fan, set in the Survival-Rose gap) that I can imagine many fans would find contentious. Don't let that turn you off what it by any other measure a great fic. I hope you will all go and read it right now and leave some words of appreciation for the author.

Author: Neveralarch
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1809
Author's Summary: “Matrix archives: mailing list section. Fragments from the 'Gallifreyan Expatriate Circular', commonly referred to as the 'GEC'.”
Characters: Iris Wildthyme, Romana II, The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (5th), The War Chief, Drax, The Master (Ainley), The Meddling Monk, The Rani
Pairings: a touch of Doctor/Master, but it’s comedic (and might, if we believe the Doctor, be a Trolling Turlough—a Trollough?) and doesn’t actually get to the warned-for Explicit (Chat) Sex: this is an ensemble piece uber alles
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing
Recced because:

All the renegades have a mailing list, which Iris Wildthyme trolls. How many renegades? “To answer your question (more for the benefit of others interested) there are currently nine _official_ members of the list, of which only five are usually active. The other four are grandfathered from the original list created by Omega and distributed from the anti-matter universe.

Yes, before you ask, we do still distribute to all known universes. This is very difficult, technically speaking, and is also why I am moderator and not, for instance, Drax.” ←The Rani moderates. This fic spans several early Doctors’ worth of canon, and is fun for Three’s breezy email-voice alone.

Author's Summary: “One day the Doctor woke up. (Eight/Master - written for the Buffy 'Normal Again' prompt on Best_Enemies)”
Characters: Charley Pollard, C’Rizz, Grace Holloway, Romana II, The Doctor (8th), The Master (Roberts), LOTS of Eight companions, in passing
Pairings: Eight/Roberts!Master
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing (I’d add major character death, self-harm due to the mechanism of a plot thing)
Recced because:

The Doctor keeps swapping between his life on the TARDIS and a mundane AU where he’s a physicist teaching at Berkley in 2001, married to Roberts!Master and surrounded by people he knows in canon, but with switched-around names. Is it a fluff piece about them being humans and married and the Master mostly not being a terrible person who’d kill people? Or is it really disturbing and sad, a set up predicated on psychological weaponry (the origins of the Daleks’ Nightmare Child project) from the start of the Time War? Perhaps that depends on how creeped out you are by the ‘which of these lives is real’ “Normal Again” dilemma.

Story: Nonsense All Compact (The Community Theatre Remix)

Characters: Irving Braxiatel, Leela, Narvin, Romana II, The Doctor (8th), Andred, K9, cameos from Eight’s companions
Pairings: Romana II/Brax, Leela/Narvin, Leela/Andred
Warnings: None
Recced because:

This is a mundane AU remix of Aralias’s excellent The Importance of Being On Stage, which is also about Brax having to rustle the denizens of Gallifrey into amateur dramatics and well worth a read. Neveralarch’s version is funny (how could anything about Gallifrey as a middle England town and Brax being dragooned into running its am-dram fail to be funny?) and lovely, with great world-building that uses all kinds of canon well and doesn’t leave you feeling left out if you don’t remember who Samson and Gemma are (don’t worry, the Doctor doesn’t remember who they are either). It’s an ensemble fic before it’s anything else, though its shippy elements are variously satisfying and amusing.

I think you’d even dig this story if you didn’t know the Gallifrey audios and had only a passing familiarity with Big Finish. Brax is the Doctor’s brother and he has a morally-dubious art collection and also does grandiose political machinations back on the Time Lord ranch and pines after Romana and nothing ever works out for him—there, you’re good to go, enjoy.

Story: Romana And The Quest Against Boredom
Author: Gallifrey Immigrant
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1778
Author's Summary: Romana's bored. That cannot do, so she's looking for a solution.
Characters/Pairings: K-9, Romana II, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Well, you know that thing where I'm kind of obsessed with Four and Romana and indeed Four/Romana? I'm even worse at the moment, because I've recently been re-watching Seasons 16 and 17 for the first time in some time, and I'm sort of falling in love all over again with those crazy kids and their idiosyncratic adventures. As I was recently opining in a venue other than Livejournal, I'm not really convinced "too silly" is ever a bad thing where Doctor Who is concerned, especially not when you have a Doctor and companion combo who do "silly" with such panache.

And I think this fic is a good example of the whole Season 17 vibe, capturing that combination of innocent whimsy and knowing absurdism and, let's not forget, genuine warmth. I'm particularly fond of the dialogue in this, which really does sound like exactly the sorts of things these characters would be coming out with, as Romana sets out to fight her newly acquired state of boredom in as business-like and slightly oblivious a manner as you would expect her to do so. Some good asides in this from K-9 too, but what I really love is the way Four himself impinges (or doesn't impinge) upon the story, embodying the disreputable uncle/irresponsible teacher side of his nature as he decides to let his protégé figure this particular lesson out for herself (she does...sort of).

Anyway, I think it's lovely, and I hope you will too when you go and read it. Right now!

Story: Chance and a Grey Sky
Author: rivendellrose
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2154
Author's Summary: Susan Ivanova meets a strange woman on an isolated planet. (Crossover with Babylon 5, post "Sleeping in Light.")
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, Susan Ivanova
Warnings: None

Recced because: If you’re a fan of Doctor Who, odds are good that you’d love Babyon 5 (give it a try if you haven’t already!). If you’re not familiar with it, some background will help: B5’s five-year plot ultimately centers around an epic war between two ancient, powerful races who were originally charged to be the protectors and guiders of lesser species (i.e. humans) but differed so widely about how to go about doing this that they ended up using us all as pawns in a war stretching for millenia – first a Cold War, but then a very hot one indeed.

Or to put it another way: Babyon 5 is what would happen if someone set a sci-fi series during the Time War from the point of view of the species who are caught in the crossfire, asked to choose sides, destroyed by whichever side they rebuff, and in all cases fundamentally unprepared to choose between two races who don’t actaully look that different from our limited point of view. Cass from “Night of the Doctor” would be the main character.

All of that aside, this alas-too-short fic is set post-series for B5 and centers on Susan Ivanova in the twilight of her career (arguably the character who walked away with the most scars), setting her up with Romana (also fresh from the Time War) in a character-driven piece that is both achingly sweet and inexpressibly sad. The fic doesn’t flinch from any of the realities of what the characters have been through but still manages to end on a believably hopeful note. Comforting without being saccharine, it’s exactly what I need after all the tragedy. Give it your time and you won’t be disappointed.

And so I come to the end of another Calufrax stint, and as usual it's a bittersweet moment. Glad that people enjoyed the recs over the past few weeks, disappointed that I didn't make time to post the full ten recs (I promised more Torchwood, but alas there will be no more Torchwood - maybe next time!). By way of apology, I leave you all this parting rec:

Story: Twistin' the Night Away
Author: Maggadin
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 436
Author's Summary: It might not actually be Valentine's Day. But that won't stop the Doctor from celebrating it (Seven/Romana).
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (7th)/Romana II
Warnings: None I can see.

Recced because: Well, I don't know if you've noticed this somewhat embarrassing Doctor/Romana problem I have. It's nice to encounter other fic writers who have the same sort of condition from time to time, and this very nice short fic (whose author, I hasten to add in the interests of disclosure, I do kind of knock around with online) shows all of the symptoms.

It's my deeply held private fanon that in that brief gap between the end of the NA novel Lungbarrow and the unfortunate San Francisco shooting incident that we don't talk about (before he got sent on that patently absurd mission to claim the Master's remains from the notoriously fair and scrupulous Dalek judicial system) the Seventh Doctor basically just hung out on Gallifrey with the Lady President Romana, and they might have gone on the odd adventure together, or just out on dates, but they generally had a bit of a "thing" going on. Yes, I'm a sap, I know. Stop sniggering.

And this fic basically takes the same position, which wins it massive bonus points. The thing is, though, it actually works. Seven probably isn't an obvious choice to be having a romantic relationship with anybody, despite us fan-fictioneers and our little foibles, but the way he's portrayed here, it's actually plausible. You can imagine Sylvester McCoy doing that kind of Sylvester McCoy thing with some of the lines, and Romana II is basically as appreciative as she used to be when Four used to take her out on "dates" (that is, not very, on the face of it, but you know she is really, underneath). And it is exactly the sort of time and place Seven would choose for a romantic night out, based on his track record.

So yeah, this kind of overt Doctor-shipping may not be everybody's cup of tea (or your preferred Doctor ships may vary) but I like it, and recommend it. And I strongly suggest you should read it and leave some words for the author. :)

Until next time...

Recced because: There always needs to be more about Gallifrey during the Time War. I have read many, many fics about the Time War. I have written a few myself. There is still so much mystery to be delved into. So much richness to be explored.

This fiction does that. There are no words to describe how this fiction blew me away. I was asked to beta and I have to say...I read this and practically cried because of the sheer perfection. It was my honor to beta this glorious work: there were a few surprises twists, a few characters we know well seen from a new light, new depths to the War Doctor and a fresh, yet even more sinister feel to the hierachy of Gallifrey. The political machinations alone were mind-boggling and complex, yet laid out in a way that makes sense of it all. The skewed, tilted view of the Time Lords and how they descended into madness with this War is laid out step by step and it is frightening how easy that slide seems to be from the depiction. An intelligent, secure (rather stagnant) people become vicious, manipulative and blood-thirsty very quickly. They always had that potential, but this fiction showed it soaring to new heights. Couple the fear that is displayed here with a nice dose of ruthlessness (and horror) embroil the Universe's Champion...and you get this fiction. Glorious. I am reccing this because GLORIOUS. A definite must-read for all.

Story Times Such as These
Author Neveralarch

author's summary The Time War is too large and complex and confusing to be viewed in generalities. Four personal stories from the War.
characters/pairings Irving Braxiatel, Leela, Narvin, Narvin, Romana II, The Doctor (8th), The Master (Other)

recced because As is clear from my previous reccing spree, I am a huge fan of the Time War. The concepts fascinates me, and I like that we do not know for sure what exactly happened. It's perfect for angst, usually involves Romana and the Doctor being awesome, and gets to be quite dark and gruesome. See, there is no downside to the Time War! (aside from the fact that (spoiler) everyone dies, of course).

This story has all things mentioned, but is written with an unusual underlying sense of dread and despair. I simultaneously hated and loved reading it for exactly that reason. It's dark (pitch black in fact), but somehow totally irresistible. There is something about the writing which drew me in and made me read until the end, despite the fact that the characters I love so much made me feel wrong. Their actions feel alien, yet I can see them behaving in exactly that way when pushed to the edge and over it. It is not an enjoyable read, but by Rassilon is it a good one.

No, of course I haven't forgotten that I'm reccing here these two weeks - I'm just spreading them out a bit. Yes, that's right. Spreading them out. Clearly. Anyway, without further ado:

Story: Blood From A Very Tall Stone
Author: nostalgia
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1,416
Author's Summary: So, like, Romana and Duggan clearly liked each other in 'City Of Death'. This is the post-ep fic about how the Doctor was like really jealous or something. Can the epic timelove be saved? Will K-9 survive? What happens to the cups of tea that vanish early on in the story?
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None that I can think of

Recced because: Well, as may have become embarrassingly clear based on some of my earlier reccing spells, I'm more than a bit partial to a bit of Four/Romana, especially Four/Romana II, and even more especially when it evokes the spirit of those gloriously silly Season 17 stories as well as this does.

File this one under the by now bulging dossier of fics I can't believe hadn't already been recced on the comm. I mean, it's a really good fic by a well-known member of the LJ Whofic community and it seems like years since I first read it (five years in fact, from the timestamp on the review I left over on Teaspoon), so it would seem to be a shoe-in for having already been brought up here. In fact I was fairly sure it had been, but it turns out not.

The idea of a Romana/Duggan "thing" during City of Death, and of imagining the Doctor's reaction afterwards seems by now to be a well-worn path for Four-ficcers to take, although it's always interesting to see the different takes on it. For my money, this is one of the very best versions out there, and what really makes it work is the dialogue. Sparkling, I believe is the word for it. Every other line is a zinger. Those wonderfully absurdist word-games that the Doctor and Romana managed to veer into at the most unlikely moments, rendered here with incredible fidelity to the original source material. It's a bit of a cliché to observe when praising dialogue in fanfic that you can hear the original actors saying the words, but I really can when I read this. And as I know from bitter experience, unless you're a genuine comedic genius like Douglas Adams (and who of us is?) writing that stuff even reasonably well is hard. So hats off, really, to anybody who can do it as seamlessly as in this fic.

So yes, if Four/Romana is your thing, then this is the real deal. 24 carat stuff. Go and check it out and leave a word or two of appreciation.

Story: Cross Purposes
Author: johne
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1,103
Author's Summary: The Monk has been arrested for tampering with the timeline. But he's not the only person in the room with an interest in changing history.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Romana II, The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (8th), The Meddling Monk (Eight/Romana II, Jack Harkness/Second Doctor)
Warnings: n/a

Recced because: Crack ships that someone work out to not be crack. A nice melding of my favourite Doctor with one a little bit more classic. Some brilliant one-liners (the best is from Romana II, somewhere near the end), and a hell of a lot of verbal sparring, which for me often makes a fic. It's also a pretty clever one, with a lot of world-building obviously done in the background.

Story: Let's Do It
Author: Charamei
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 879
Author's Summary: The Doctor and Romana try to make sense of this 'romance' thing.
Characters/Pairings: Four/Romana II
Warnings: None

Recced because: I am sure some of you out there don't ship Four/Romana II, but for those of us who do ship these particular Time Lords, "Let's Do It" is a sweetly funny and frankly adorable look at how two highly logical aliens might explore traditional human mating rituals. Naturally, it involves relying on a book, albeit one called Great Romantic Tropes of Our Time, so holding hands, watching each other sleep, and getting caught in the rain all get their scientific due, as Four and Romana attempt to determine exactly how and why these mysterious rituals have any appeal at all.

What does work ... well, that would spoil the story, so I suggest reading it instead.

Story: Look for Connections
Author: SummerRayn
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1196
Author's Summary: "The teacher they call "The Friz" is as mysterious to herself as she is to her students. She has a feeling she isn't supposed to remember where she comes from--but he's not easily forgotten. A reminiscence and, yes, a Magic School Bus crossover."
Characters/Pairings: Romana, Fourth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: I love crossovers. I love well-done crossovers even more. And most of all I love crossovers so perfect that they might as well be canon. This is one of those crossovers.
I always knew that the Friz had to be a Time Lady, and this exploration of precisely how that might have been was done beautifully. I really enjoyed the remembered interactions between Romana and the Doctor--in particular, SummerRayn did an brilliant job of explaining the concept of a school bus (something so common to us) as an element of an entirely different culture. It's not often that we get to see the Earth described that way.
And for those of us who watched/read Magic School Bus as a kid, that last line means nothing less than adventure. A wonderful fic!

Story: Five Time Romanadvoratrelundar Missed the Signs, and One Time She Couldn't Possibly Ignore Them
Author: JaneTurenne
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6484
Author's Summary: The most powerful woman in the known universe has a tendency to attract admirers. She would probably find this a distinct annoyance—if she could ever be bothered to notice.
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, The Doctor (4th), Irving Braxiatel, Narvin, Leela, K9
Warnings: n/a

Recced because: This is just a joy to read.  The Gallifrey audios are my favourite corner of Doctor Who, and fic that deals with them is relatively hard to come by (although of unwavering quality).  The tale of Romana's many thwarted admirers makes for a genuinely funny story that nevertheless stays perfectly in character.  Part of JaneTurenne's gift is the uncanny ability to make every single line of dialogue she writes sound like it belongs in the characters' voices, and this is no exception: from the Doctor's theatrical boom to Leela's earnest directness, the dialogue sparkles with wit and humour.  One to bookmark and reread.

It's me again! Getting this one in a little bit early because it's currently past 3am, and I'm having trouble sleeping. But hey, never too early for Doctor Who. In some alternative universe somewhere, I'm probably late. Which by no coincidence at all is the theme of this next rec...

Story: Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
Author: Brunhilde
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2,230
Author's Summary: The Lady Romana is a powerful witch, a talent passed down from her mother and nurtured by Professor Irving Braxiatel of the Magical Academy. It is a talent that will shape her life.
Characters/Pairings: Irving Braxiatel, Leela, Narvin, Romana II, Other Character(s)
Warnings: n/a

Recced because: I found this one only recently, but I am an absolute sucker for an alternative universe and sci-fi and magic go eerily well together. The inclusion of Leela in this fic was a delightful surprise, and the society and world that has been built up for this story is as believable as any canon story from the show itself. The adaptations fit perfectly, and I like how the story is split up into scenes that span Romana's life. The dialogue is charmingly witty, the implications of what goes on behind the scenes the perfect addition, and the whole story could cut like a knife. A real gem, and well worth the three read-throughs I've just given it.

warnings: Time War angst?

Recced because:
This story combines all my favourite fic things in one story, and I cannot believe it has not been recced before:

Romana in any incarnation is quite possibly my favourite character of the entire show. I love what the audio's and books have done with her character after she left the series, and her being president of the High Council at some point is my favourite (head)canon.  Another favourite of mine is the Time War. Aside from the obvious angst involved (I’m a sucker for angst) the whole concept of a war fought across all of time is utterly fascinating. The fact that we don’t know exactly how it ended or started, what the Doctor’s or Romana’s role was makes for an endless list of great stories. Many of them have already been recced here, and I would like to add this one to that list.

It probably isn’t much of a shock to anyone anymore now that Doctor/Romana is my favourite pairing, especially when set during the Time War. The beauty of this particular story however lies in that it doesn’t pair them together explicitly, but you can easily read it with shipping glasses on. The fic uses an interesting concept from the recent series to bring about a beautiful and sad conversation between two old friends (or lovers, however you want to read it), forming a bittersweet exploration of their relationship; how they influence and how they complete each other. A long time has passed since they said their goodbyes, and they have both grown and changed considerably. Yet Romana’s behaviour in the final day of the Time War as painted here feels very true to her character, and the Doctor’s babbling is so perfectly Eleven that it hurts. The ending haunted me for quite some time after I'd finished it.

Hello everyone, I’m a Whovian over from Belgium, and I’ll be your reccer this week. It is my first time here so apologies if anything goes wrong. I will rec a variety of stories covering most eras of the show so I hope there is something for everyone to enjoy the coming week.

Story:  Girls’ morning after
Author: diabolicalfiend
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 615
Author's Summary: Iris' visit leaves Romana with a headache.
Characters/Pairings: Iris Wildthyme, Irving Braxiatel, K-9, Leela, Narvin, Romana II
Warnings: none

Recced because:

Gallifrey V came out recently, and to celebrate that I have this hilarious little ficlet for you all to start off the week. It captures the characters and the tone of the series perfectly, and it made me laugh out loud more than once. I always enjoy stories which show the author is familiar with less known facts in canon, as is the case here.
I almost didn’t read this because I don’t know Iris other than by reputation, but since she doesn’t actually feature here (other than by reputation!), it wasn’t a problem.  The characters are perfectly portrayed, especially Romana II and her wicked sense of humour.
The set-up for the story itself is quite ingenious, and brings out everything I love about the Gallifrey series. There is banter, humour and even a bit of political backstabbing. What more could you wish for on a Monday morning?

I realise the Gallifrey fandom is quite small, but I hope non-listeners will enjoy this too. The story does not require extensive knowledge of the series, so just give it a go (and perhaps check out Gallifrey after that!).  The author does not appear to have been recced before, which is also a bonus.

Story: Hand in Hand for Eternity
Author: AceOnGallifrey
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 971
Author's Summary: The Time Lords want Romana back. Romana wants to keep on running. The Doctor? Well, he knows what he has to do.
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None, well not unless you're philosophically opposed to "fix it" fic, I guess.

Recced because: Well, I guess it's no secret by now to those of you with even a passing familiarity with my fannish activities that I'm a big, fat sucker for the whole notion of Four/Romana (and Doctor(s)/Romana(s) in general). This fic isn't quite flat-out Four/Romana II, but it's arguable that it's strongly hinting at that. But let's face it, one of the big strengths of Four and Romana as a partnership, especially during S17 once they've got that whole Key to Time thing out of the way, is that it doesn't really matter whether you're invested in the idea of the "/" between them. They're just best friends forever, careening slightly manically around time and space on their holidays, holding hands, comedy double-acting at each other and any supporting character they run into, being extremely silly and somewhat cool and most importantly having enormous fun while they're at it. It's like Ten and Rose during S2 of NuWho but not annoying.  I kid!

But then comes S18 and, while there's still a fair bit of the above to be had, things also suddenly get very real. They both know they're on borrowed time together, that their "thing" isn't going to last much longer. It only lasts as long as it does, in fact, because of a freak navigational accident that strands them temporarily in another universe (and you have to suspect that once they're in E-Space, Romana knows in her hearts of hearts that she won't be accompanying the Doctor on the journey back).

And this fic considers the scene that it all turns on; that scene in Full Circle where Romana gets the summons back to Gallifrey and the Doctor...the Doctor shows every sign of just going along with it. "You can't fight Time Lords." He should know. He tried, and look how it turned out for him in the end. Four's reaction is as understandable in that light as his decision to cut Sarah Jane loose before answering that earlier summons, but the quiet tragedy of what I've heard described as Four and Romana's "break up" is there if, like me, you're a fan of the pair of them. And this fic nicely examines that scene, describing the thoughts and emotions that we can only guess from the performances on the television screen. And then it turns it on its head, and yes, you could describe it as a "fix it" were it not for the real sense you get that, the positive note the fic ends upon aside, the Doctor's decision here may or may not end well for either him or Romana - it's a terrible risk they're both taking. And yet, sometimes it is better to fight and lose than not to fight. Or even run. And the ending makes me go sort of "Awww", and that's worth a rec in itself. :)

Thank you very much for having me. Please give some of my obscure canon choices a chance. It may lead you down the road to a side of Who fandom you've not considered that is actually brilliant.

Today, I was planning on reccing a completely different Neveralarch story, and then I saw this one right below the moderately sensible choice I'd been planning, and I thought 'nobody knows what Gallifrey is or wants Age of Sail AUs of it', but... well, the other choice was more Doctor/Master and probably not as brilliant as this. So-

Story: The Very Model
Author: neveralarch
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 10070
Author's Summary: Being the tale of how Admiral Romana kept her job, how Rear-Admiral Braxiatel fought off the empire's enemies, how Leela of the Sevateem gained an audience with the Admirality, and how Captain Narvin was irritated by just about everyone. (A Gallifrey/Age of Sail fusion, where most of the characters are still Time Lords, even though that doesn't make much sense when they're on wooden ships.)
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, Leela, Braxiatel, Narvin, K-9s, and various other Gallifrey people who aren't on Teaspoon

Recced because: Reasons I love this fic that hopefully apply to more people who aren't me:

a) Age of Sail is a particular vice of mine. If you are fond of this genre, but haven't heard Gallifrey - give it a try.
b) I particularly like Age of Sail fics in which Romana is a headstrong admiral who beats people up with buckets, and Leela is a pirate. (A small category, alas). Other characters are also treated very well - K-9 is Age of Sail-ified most brilliantly, and Brax is sort of trying to take over the navy and Narvin is trying to play by the rules and is so angry that nobody else will.
b2) It is a true ensemble fic.
c) The narrative voice is consistently hilarious. And so is the dialogue.
d) For all that it is an Age of Sail AU, it is also a brilliant Gallifrey-type plot that you can actually get wrapped up in. Do you like intrigue and backstabbing? Yes. Great. Read this fic.

Characters/Pairings: Romana II, Eighth Doctor, Irving Braxiatel
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s delightful. Romana ventures into the Matrix in search of advice and finds instead the Doctor with a picnic and a punt – and possibly some useful advice, after all. The author suggests some knowledge of the relevant Big Finish audios would be useful, but I think it makes a perfectly intelligible (and not really spoilery) scene/story all its own. It’s funny, light and charming with an undercurrent of sadness – and hope. I think the best I can do is an excerpt:

With the importance of names being a hot topic on the show lately.. This seemed fitting.

Story: Your Name
Author: blaidddrwg
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 24,226
Author's Summary: Exploring the names chosen by the Doctor and the Master, as well as their original, or 'real' names.
Characters/Pairings: Romana I, Romana II, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (Academy era), The Master (Academy era), The Master (Other), The Master (Simm), The Rani (Academy era)
Warnings: I suppose there are some incesty-tones here, if you go with the theory that Koschei and Theta are brothers, but they are easily ignored if you choose to do so

Recced because: Throughout both classic and new Who the Doctor and the Master keep intriguing and making us guess about their original relationship. This fic explores the possibility that they may have been brothers (twins, in fact) and it strangely seems to fit. I don't think everyone will agree with this theory, but it's a nice framework for this fic and truly transforms the Koschei/Theta dynamics into two sides of the same medal.
The first few chapters give a really good feel, I think, of what they academy might have been like and the shenanigans the both of them might have gotten up to. More interesting is the tension that already starts to spiral out of control as both boys grow up and their relationship already begins to fracture. blaidddrwg focuses on the inner thoughts and telepathic life of the two main characters very well as well, really drawing the reader into the relationship and letting the audience get very close. This fic is definitely an interesting window into Time Lord psychology and shed a light on a possible angle of the Doctor's and the Master's history.
The last two chapters link all this prior, non-canon history to scenes from canon, completing the circle in a way. We readers read the academy chapters with our canon-based background and in the last two chapters we review this familiar canon within the framework blaidddrwg has given us in earlier chapters.

Even if you don't feel you can agree on the idea that the Doctor and the Master are brothers, I'd still advise you to read this fic if only because it offers so many interesting new angles to this set of characters who seem to be forever spiralling together - pulling and pushing at each other constantly.

Story: A Country of Smaller Wars
Author: levendis
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 23,303
Author's Summary: Looking for home in all the wrong places: Narvin, professional voyeur and artful patriot, follows his ex-president, a con-man, and a savage through alternate universes only to find himself pretty much, but not quite, back where he started.
Characters/Pairings: Narvin/Romana II, Leela, Irving Braxiatel, K-9
Warnings: Swearing.

Recced because: This is one of the best Gallifrey fics I've ever read, and that's already a quality subset of Doctor Who fandom. This rec is later than I expected, because I got so caught up in rereading the story that I kind of forgot I was reading it for a reason.

A Country of Smaller Wars follows the plot of the Gallifrey series of audios from Coordinator Narvin's perspective, before moving beyond the latest audios and into speculation for the next ones. The fic takes knowledge of the Gallifrey series more or less for granted, but if you haven't listened to Gallifrey I really recommend the audios as well - personally, I think they're the best work Big Finish has done in the Doctor Who universe. And then you can come back and enjoy the fic!

If you've already listened to Gallifrey, then you should definitely read A Country of Smaller Wars. It has some fascinating conceits and a really great take on Narvin, and Narvin and Romana's relationship. Also, a fantastic Leela. I am running out of adjectives, here - you should just read this.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3511
Author's Summary: Sometimes, you discover that you have more in common with somebody than either of you ever realised.
Characters/Pairings: Adric, Romana II, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None

Recced because:

Adric is in this. But really, this is about Romana. This is an introspective fic about her reasons for leaving the Doctor and what she thinks about that. Adric is treated marvelously by JJPOR, who shows him as the sort of young man who doesn't understand why his brilliance doesn't make him loved. She doesn't sugarcoat the character either; Adric's less lovely character traits are on display, but not bashed. And Romana is nothing but class- she's respectful and patient. And ultimately, this is a marvelous moment of, if not bonding, then at least understanding between the two characters
