Story: The Sacred Art of Stealing
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All Ages

Author's Summary: A very serious and in no way silly story in which the Doctor attempts to pinch Sarah Jane's companions.
Characters/Pairings: The Tenth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Maria Jackson, Clyde Langer
Warnings: None

Recced because: When I learned that Calufrax now allows you to rec fics that were previously recced more than two years ago, I knew I just had to throw in some old favorites. This fic, recced back in 2008, is still just as funny and enjoyable as when it was first written. The Tenth Doctor is in search of new companions, and where better to go than to Sarah Jane, who conveniently has some already-trained teenagers at the ready?

Story: The Worst Doctor Who Story Ever

Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, The Master, Adric, Ace, Peri, Mel, Romana II, Sarah Jane (and more)
Warnings: none

Recced because: I laughed non-stop at this absurd yet accurate send up of badfic. We've all seen them- probably lurking in the dark corners of fanfiction.net: fics written as one endless paragraph, riddled with misspelled words, oblivious to punctuation or grammar. They usually feature a Mary Sue and some character bashing for good measure. This one ticks all those boxes perfectly, and I couldn't stop giggling as it hit every cliched trope in Doctor Who fandom over the head with a mallet. This fic is short, so the (intentionally) terrible formatting shouldn't be an obstacle to enjoying this hilarious parody. (And honestly the misspellings just make it funnier- I nearly lost it at 'Parry' and 'Ramona' LOL)

Story: Can't see the forest
Author: ClocketPatch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1,396
Author's Summary: The trees have roots everywhere.
Characters/Pairings: the Doctor (9th), the Doctor (10th), Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith, Jo Grant, Jabe, the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is exactly the sort of thing I like to see in fanfic. It takes a relatively minor character who appeared in a single, if somewhat pivotal, story and opens that character up to explore all sorts of unexpected facets and directions. It brings in bits of lore and characters from all over the universe of Doctor Who and mixes them seamlessly with the not-canon-but-ought-to-be speculations of the author's own imagination. And then it brings in a neat time paradox, yet another sideways look from this author (who has produced many such sideways looks) at the nature of the TARDIS and finishes on a killer image and concept that will stay with you long after you've finished reading. In other words, this is the good stuff.

Jabe was already a fascinating character to my way of thinking, but this fic succeeds in making her even more so by emphasising her non-human nature and suggesting some very interesting takes on the society she comes from and speculates on the possible motivations for the actions we see from her in the televised story. Most of all, however, this story has this particular author's stamp all over it. It's not just what it tells, but the way it's told with great use of evocative language, vivid imagery and nice prose stylings.

This is an author I've been following for several years now, and whose work I will always recommend for all of the reasons outlined here. You know you're onto a sure thing when you click on the link to one of her stories. Don't believe me? There's the link right there. You know what to do...

Story: A Ghost Story
Author: Kelkat9
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 76054
Author's Summary: Stressed-out post grad maths and computer science student Rose Tyler moves into a house with a reputation for being haunted. She scoffs at the things at first as she has her own issues with her personal life and school. Soon, she can’t ignore or logically explain what’s happening. Her inner scientist is intrigued and she starts to investigate. The more she investigates, the more things happen and she becomes obsessed with solving the mystery of the house and the disappearance of one Dr. James McCrimmon who vanished mysteriously in 1968.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith, Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones, other DW characters
Warnings: Explicit sex, swearing

I've recced Kelkat9's stuff before, and I'll probably do it again, because I love a good Ten/Rose AU, and no one writes them finer than she. This story is exactly what it says on the tin-a ghost story/haunted house story, and it's deliciously creepy. I don't recommend reading at night, unless you want to make yourself jumpy and uneasy. This is more than just a ghost story, though, it's a mystery and a love story, too, and all the various plots weave together beautifully. Trust me, you want to find out what happened to Dr. James McCrimmon. Even though I know how it ends, I've reread this story 3 or 4 times because it's just so perfect.

Recc'ed Because: Because of course Missy would decide to go back to her old stomping grounds in an attempt to overpower and entrance the Doctor's old companions. Author's Summary: When Clara doesn't join him after the events of "Deep Breath" the Doctor picks up another companion. A big, sexy woman with legs up to here, a tail that won't quit, and big, nasty, pointy teeth. Yes, the Doctor is joined by a T Rex in the fix-it fic to end all fix-it fics.
Characters/Pairings: Adric, Clara, Danny, Harriet Jones, Ianto, Jack, Martha, Rory, Sarah Jane, Wilf, Twelfth Doctor, Simm!Master
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor has had many companions over the years, but never, to the best of my knowledge, a T. rex, much less the one from "Deep Breath." And let's just say it's remarkable how differently certain situations might have played out had a gigantic carnivore been brought into the mix. (Davros never stood a chance.) Best of all – and unlike a number of companions – our dinosaur friend finally gets a happy ending, and a fate she earned far more than what really happened to her in her one onscreen episode.

Recced because:

This fic is in script format and it uses this unusual set-up to throw maximum focus on Twelve's dialogue. The scene is set with the barest of stage directions and from the very beginning Twelve is centre stage. Rambling monologues have been a characteristic of most of the Doctor's incarnations, though some are more verbous than others. Twelve is very verbous indeed, but the winding weave of his speaches always finds its way back to to some cutting point. Here he speaks about philosophy, history, friendship, and re-birth. This is a fic about Twelve, but it is also a fic about all the history which has created him. And friendship, which is probably the common theme to all the fics I'm reccing this period.

Story: The Interview
Author: Llywela
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2187
Author's Summary: Sarah asks Harry for a favour; a meandering bit of fluff with a sting in its tail.
Characters/Pairings: Harry Sullivan, Luke Smith, Rani Chandra, Sarah-Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because:

Harry Sullivan was mentioned (briefly) in this week's episode of Doctor Who, and it's not the first time he's been reference either. For a companion who spent surprisingly little time actually onboard the TARDIS (just a season and a bit... and most of that time the TARDIS was MIA) he has a surprising fandom sticking power. He's old-fashioned, a bit bumbling, and utterly endearing. He is also quite a difficult character to nail down in fic without turning him into a caricature. This fic manages it with gusto.

Even though it is mostly dialogue (a stream of silly interview questions) it perfectly captures both Harry Sullivan and Sarah-Jane Smith and their strong, slightly-teasing friendship. I laughed out loud several times while reading, and came away feeling like I now know infinitely more about these characters and their lives than I did going in. There is some sorrow as well, but the fic doesn't dwell on it. This is a story about friendship and how it endures and enriches us.

And it is beautiful.

Story: Life Goes On

Author's Summary: Case-file. The Doctor has left UNIT…but life goes on without him and so do extra-terrestrial incursions. Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Harry Sullivan, Liz Shaw, Sarah Jane Smith, Sergeant Benton, UNIT
Warnings: no standard warnings apply

Recced because: After the Doctor leaves UNIT, several of his former companions and colleagues investigate a mysterious alien. I'm not usually someone who likes reading longer fics, and especially chaptered works (especially when those chaptered works are abandoned without a conclusion). I remember seeing this years back on [livejournal.com profile] who_daily and falling in love with it after the fic was completed. I find the mystery in this fic compelling. Characters/Pairings: Clara Oswin Oswald, Gita Chandra, Haresh Chandra, Sarah Jane Smith, Sky, The Doctor (12th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: Like the rest of Doctor Who fandom, I was dismayed to hear of the untimely death of Elisabeth Sladen in 2011. Although it pales into insignificance by comparison, as much as I recognised that ending the series at that point was the right decision, I was also very sad to see the end of The Sarah Jane Adventures, my favourite Who spin-off (sorry, Torchwood!). I know I was not alone in this, nor in craving hints as to what might have happened next to the Bannerman Road gang, and especially how their paths might have crossed again with characters from the main series. So any fic that explores these areas is going to be one I want to read.

I find this fic particularly delightful for the way it focuses on two of my favourite SJA characters, Rani's parents Gita and Haresh, and for portraying them so vividly and in a manner that is so true to their onscreen characters. They both react exactly as you might expect to the notion of a mysterious new man appearing in Sarah Jane's life, which is to say completely differently and at considerable cross purposes. Another thing I find extremely interesting here is the way the author imagines how life might have continued for the characters following the end of the TV series, picking up on the hints in those final episodes to present a considerably altered status quo, with the younger characters moving on beyond school and parents and the newly introduced Sky coming more to the fore. This is no doubt the path the series itself would have followed had it been able to continue.

The highlight here, of course, is the great crossover it imagines which surely would have happened had SJA continued up to the present day (considering the episodes featuring Ten and Eleven) - the Twelfth Doctor meeting Sarah Jane Smith. It's done very well and hearwarmingly here, with Twelve showing as we might have guessed by now that his brusque exterior hides a somewhat less curmudgeonly centre, and of course has an added poignancy due to the rl reason that that encounter can never take place for real.

But enough of that - go and read this fic because it is really rather lovely, and please leave some words of encouragement for the author.

Recced because: This fic is like the best of Twilight Zone in the way it quietly unfolds, starting with a mystery -- why doesn't Jack want to call on the Doctor for help? -- and then turning on a simple, horrifying reveal. The story was written back in 2008, so it's AU now, but perhaps that just means this happened in an alternate timeline (something else both Doctor Who and Twilight Zone have in common).

Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor claims he can cook. Actually, as it turns out, the Doctor has always claimed that he could cook. This fic starts off with the Eleventh Doctor promising to cook a special meal for Amy and Rory, and then moves on to a series of flashbacks that show past Doctors, past companions, and past culinary (mis)adventures. Much of it is very funny, but there is also a wonderful depth to the writing, especially in the framing story of Eleven, Amy, and Rory.

Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Clyde Langer, Fitz Kreiner, Rani Chandra, Samantha Jones, Sarah-Jane Smith
Author's Summary: How did Fitz Kreiner rebuild his life after he left the Doctor? Particularly when aliens will keep interrupting his plans.

Recced Because:

Fitz Kreiner is messed up beyond all belief, and he can't take two steps without wandering into trouble or making a horrible mistake, but for all his flaws, he's also very likeable and much more competent than he gives himself credit for.

Some unspecified time after the EDAs finish, Fitz leaves the Doctor and aimlessly drifts his way onto Sarah-Jane's couch, claiming that he's given up saving the universe and being a sidekick. With a little help from Sarah-Jane, the Bannerman Road gang, a gang of angry Ogron's, and a woman with a time travelling motorbike, he realizes that only half that claim is true.

This fic seamlessly blends canons and timelines from different corners of the Whoniverse. The dialogue is sometimes painful and sometimes hilarious, but always spot on. The details of time and place are richly imagined. The characters live and breathe. And Fitz is perfectly imperfect and compelling as he bumbles his way (with many friendly but forceful nudges) towards accepting his past and making a new beginning.

Recced because: One of the great things about the Doctor is that he helps his companions to see what was already there, to develop the brilliance that they already possessed. They become who they are because of the Doctor, but not because he makes them that way--it was always there, he just helped to bring it out. One of the saddest moments in Journey's End (and this is saying something, since the end of the episode is full of them) is after the Doctor returns Donna (sans memories) to her house and she barely acknowledges him when he leaves. Donna's loss is so great that she doesn't even know what she's missing. What's even sadder to me, however, is that this is the note we leave Donna on (at least at this point), and this seems false to her story. Donna was always brilliant, but the Doctor offered her the opportunity for her to see that, and now it seems like that all has been lost. But surely, if Donna was always brilliant, she would be brilliant with or without the Doctor, and the story here explores that through vignettes about Donna's life after Journey's End. The bonus is that these vignettes also include other companions and even the Doctor himself.

The characterisation of the three main characters is spot on and the original characters and their races are fleshed out and interesting.

Story: Family Tree
Author: MinervaFan
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4750
Author's Summary: The Smith-Jackson-Langer-Townsend-Redfern Family Christmas will now commence.
Characters/Pairings: Alan Jackson, Chrissie Jackson, Maria Jackson, Clyde Langer, Natalie Redfern, Sarah Jane Smith, Joshua Townsend.
Warnings: Spoilers for all the Sarah Jane Smith audios.

Recced because: MinervaFan can always be relied on for a good story, and this is no exception: the warmth and affection between the characters practically springs off the page.  The focus of this story is family in all its forms - biological, adopted, chosen, and everything in between - and the emotions involved are nuanced and complex, from Sarah Jane's insecurity about getting Luke's first Christmas just right, to a snapshot of Alan and Chrissie's improving relationship.  All in all, a perfect Christmas fic.

Story: Long-Distance Phone Calls
Author: Settiai
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3340
Author's Summary: One of these years, Fitz Kreiner was going to learn not to answer his phone.
Characters/Pairings: Alan Jackson, Fitz Kreiner, Maria Jackson, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None.
Recced because: One of the first stories I recced in this community was Settiai's Rebuilding a Life, an epic NCIS crossover in which Fitz Kreiner was stranded in Washington and ended up in a relationship with one of the characters. This is a non-crossover sequel which doesn't draw on the NCIS background or characters; instead it has Fitz running into Maria Jackson and finally renewing contact with Sarah Jane Smith. A nice slightly angsty story, which also deals with some old-Who canon issues.

Author's Summary: Rory always knew the Doctor had other friends on Earth. He just never expected to meet one.
Characters/Pairings: Rory Williams, Sarah Jane Smith

Recced because: Stories where Companions meet out of the usual contexts, without knowing their connection, are always fun. Here Sarah Jane needs a little first aid, and just happens to end up being treated by nurse Rory Williams...

Story: Subroutine Stream
Author: Amilyn
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1957
Author's Summary: Set just after "The Five Doctors," based on the conjecture that the Master was involved in the gift of K9 to Sarah Jane.
Characters/Pairings: K-9, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None.

Recced Because: There's an odd dichotomy about K-9. On the one hand he's one of the most beloved characters of the show and percieved as a perfect pet (see my icon above); on the other hand, he's a machine, and all of his loveable characteristics are products of his programming. This story looks behind the facade, and asks what would happen if his programming hid a few surprises.

Story: The Girl Who Waited
Author: PandaStar
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 535
Author's Summary: The Doctor has trouble keeping promises with other people. Like Amy Pond -- or Jo Grant.
Characters/Pairings: The Eleventh Doctor, Jo Grant, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: This vignette takes place during the Sarah Jane Adventures episode Death of the Doctor, when Eleven suddenly finds himself face-to-face with Jo. It's about companions waiting for the Doctor, and promises made, and promises not kept. Remember that moment in School Reunion when Sarah asked the Doctor why he never came back for her, and he replied, "I couldn't"? It's about why he acts that way. It's also very well done, right down to the last line.

Story: Ten Times the Doctor Hates the Daleks
Author: Derek Metaltron
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2,871
Author's Summary: Across ten incarnations the Doctor has faced a enemy who has cost him friends and allies, planets and stars, his very home world. They are the Daleks, and these are ten tales of how he has learnt to hate them.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctors (1st to 10th), various companions and supporting characters, Davros and the Daleks
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'll admit to something of a fannish obsession with the Daleks. Not so much the Daleks as we see them most of the time on screen, but the idea of the Daleks. Because it really is a great concept, and a fantastically horrible one when you really think about it. Which I have, probably a bit too much. The thing about the Daleks, however, while I obviously reject vehemently the idea current in fandom that it's possible to see them too often in the series, is that they rarely live up to the power of the concept in their TV outings. Often they fill a role that could be played by any generic aliens and/or robots with a bit of a search-and-replace on the script. And that, I often find, is where good fanfic comes in.

Whether the Daleks obsess the rest of you as much as they do me or not (I suspect not, in most cases!), they do occupy a unique place in the history of Doctor Who, both in-universe and in terms of the lifespan of the series itself. They're the original Who monsters, and still the benchmark against which new pretenders are measured. Even the Cybermen, probably the second most iconic Who monsters, were originally an attempt to find "the next Daleks". And in story terms, the Doctor already had an ultimate archenemy - he knew it and perhaps more importantly they knew it - long before the Master ever showed up and started telling people to obey him. I'll be very disappointed if they don't play a prominent role in the 50th Anniversary story.

And this excellent fic meditates upon that idea, the pivotal and perhaps unique role the Daleks have played in the Doctors lives, through examining the way the Doctor reacts to them. I don't think it's unwarranted to talk, as the fic does, about the Doctor hating the Daleks. Look at Nine's spitting fury in the new series episode Dalek for Exhibit A. We perhaps don't like to think as fans about the Doctor hating anybody, he's meant to be better than that and to hold himself to a higher standard - and the fic explores that as well. As much as the Doctor has been subjected again and again to the Daleks' ingrained evil, their murderous and destructive deeds again and again, he still doubts that giving in to hating them, and doing to them what that implies, is something he should be doing. It's the same moral dilemma posed by the famous scene from Genesis - does he have that right? Does feeling for them what they feel for him make him as bad as they are? This fic examines that idea through the eyes of all ten Doctors extant at the time it was written, and comes back to that essential truth about the Doctor and his relationship with his greatest enemies. As much as they've done, and as much as he's seen of that, as much pain as they've caused him, at the end he is better than they are, in moral terms, so he'll always have that doubt, and always hold back, and end up always having to fight them again.

It's a fic I really like, anyway. Please go and read it, and please leave some words for the author.

Story: Abandoned Companion
Author: Sigyn
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1937
Author's Summary: "Sarah Jane is taking a bus ride home, and runs into an eccentric stranger with deep sad eyes and a wildly vivid coat. Takes place after The Five Doctors and Trial of a Time Lord, respectively."
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, Sixth Doctor, references to Fourth Doctor, Peri Brown
Warnings: None

Recced because: This short foray into what may or may not have been is most wonderful, I think, because it gives a bit of closure to Six and Sarah Jane when they each need it most. I was particularly impressed by Six's emotional characterization--good Six is relatively hard to come by. As a whole, "Abandoned Companion" is delightfully in-character, fits neatly into canon, and is the sort of story that occasionally makes the reader cry. (I mean this in the best possible way.) It's fluffy without being too fluffy, poignant and touching while still not too heavy--all in all, a lovely read.
