Author: helluin
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 4592
Author's Summary: After the Big Finish "Five Companions" Audio, the Doctor has to see his friends back to their proper places and times. Saying goodbye to one of them is more pleasant than expected, and more painful than the Doctor lets on.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (5th)/Nyssa, Ian Chesterton/Barbara Wright,  (Cameos from: Steven Taylor, Sara Kingdom, Polly Wright)
Warnings: Explicit sex and a lot of feels

Recced because: Set during (and after) the audio The Five Companions, this fic is sad, yet lovely and portrays the dynamic between this particular Doctor and companion team well.

To lighten the mood for the last rec of my stint, another First era story but one that is fun and a bit tongue-in-cheek and a bit bittersweet in its examination of old TV/film in general.

Title: Movie Night
Author: Pendragon
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2177
Author's Summary: Lights out! Film rolling! It's classic movie night in the TARDIS.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Steven Taylor, Vicki
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: It's just a fun and very cute scene. It would seem to work as with Eleven and the Ponds as it does with Steven, Vicki and One. There is some self-referential irony and a bittersweet nod in there as well, considering how many of the First Doctor episodes were lost.

Story: Purpose
Author: Kesomon
Rating: All Ages
Author's Summary: Anyone who had chosen to stop and listen, to say a few words, to step inside his frankly magnificent time ship, had been there for a reason, even if they, or he or anyone else had yet to discover what that reason was.
Word Count: 541
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Adric, Barbara Wright, Evelyn Smythe, Ian Chesterton, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jo Grant, Katarina, Martha Jones, Mel Bush, Nyssa, Owen Harper, Peri Brown, Steven Taylor
Warnings: None

Recced Because: It is an odd little story, exploring the idea of predestination paradoxes. Usually with this kind of thing, the Doctor is the one who changes the companion. He shows them the universe, and they become a better person because of that. It is quite easy to forget that the companions change the Doctor just as much as he changes them, and that is why I love this fic. It clearly shows the delicate relationship between the two, while also paying homage to the fact that the companions are amazing and usually go on to be amazing after their time in the TARDIS. The last line is a nice touch too, with the Doctor portrayed not as the all-knowing Time Lord, but the wanderer, the traveller who marvels at the beauty and mystery of the universe.

Hey everyone, it’s September 9th! You know what that means? We’re 107 days away from Christmas! And what better way to celebrate the festive season way, way too early than by fourteen tales of Winter Wonder with – get this – EVERY Doctor, Sarah Jane, Torchwood and K9?

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 20,432
Author's Summary: A collection of Christmas themed stories throughout Time and Space. Spoilers from all of Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and K9.

Warnings: None

Recced because: darkestboy is one of those authors who has done the seemingly impossible and written fan fiction for nigh-on every corner of the Doctor Who Universe, yet he has yet to receive any significant recognition for it, which is a tad unfair. This collection in question via a logical theme is a perfect example of this fact and every short story is great, ranging from the lost Christmas for Rose Tyler, to Winter reunions with Grace Holloway and Liz Shaw to the 1st Doctor dressed as Santa Claus! A fine introduction to this author’s work. The idea of a set of stories for all the Doctors is inspired too and he’s already started a second one for spooky Halloween. Indeed I’m thinking of trying something similar myself! Hope you like this!

Story: Chocolatey Gloop!
Author: The Secretive Bus
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4,359
Author's Summary: Trying to keep one step ahead of the Daleks as they pursue him through time and space for the Taranium core, the Doctor shakes paws with a rabbit.
Characters/Pairings: Sara Kingdom, Steven Taylor, The Doctor (1st), Mavic Chen, Daleks
Warnings: None

Recced because: Written as an additional episode set amid The Daleks' Master Plan, Chocolatey Gloop! features an adventure with One, Steven Taylor, and Sara Kingdom. This story is noteworthy not just for its use of this rare TARDIS team, but for the skill with which The Secretive Bus writes the characters and the overall (highly entertaining) tone of the story. The "voices" of One, Steven, and the Daleks are particularly outstanding throughout, while the premise is quirky, unique, and funny, very much in keeping with the mood of some of the more eccentric episodes of One's era. The result is an entertaining story with superb characterizations, that fits neatly within the overall storyarc.

Story: Planes, Trains and Horseless Carriages
Author:Ligia_Elena
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2263
Author's Summary: The Doctor, Vicki and Steven journey over land and sea to make a date with history.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Vicki, Steven Taylor
Warnings:None

Recced because: I should confess here and now that I had this story written for me in [livejournal.com profile] tardis_gen, but, it’s a high treat and no mistake - I can‘t miss it out. For starters it’s that rare creature in fic, a straight historical (set in early 20th C America). What’s more, it’s a straight, fun historical that features a undeservingly neglected TARDIS team and makes full use of their characters. Only Vicki would have the boundless enthusiasm needed to overcome the obstacles in their race against time, the Doctor’s love of the many old-fangled vehicles they encounter is charming and, as for Steven - well, his wish is what drives the story and to reveal it would spoil the ending. You’ll just have to read it and find out.

Story: 1900
Author: Bad_Dickens
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 21497
Author's Summary: The Doctor, Vicki, and Steven visit the Paris Exposition of 1900, make some new friends, and investigate strange happenings..
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Steven Taylor, Vicki
Warnings: none

Recced because:

In the author’s own words ‘“1900” is a love letter of sorts to Paris.’ It’s a breathless historical adventure which whirls along on a cloud of phenomenal research and first hand experience; Paris is in this story. She is as essential a character as the Doctor or Steven.
This could easily have been a first Doctor episode – well, perhaps not the hot air balloon chase scene with Steven, that might have been a bit beyond the 1960s budget and SFX department to pull off – but it’s all presented with such a deft touch and caring hand. All of which is, in itself, enough to recommend this fic; furthering adding to its case is the fact that Steven and Vicki are the companions of choice. Theirs is a pairing which gets little love in fic, and has lost most of its actual footage to the bonfires of time. They are brought to life so vividly in this fic –
it’s a bit lengthy, but it’s definitely worth the plunge!

Story: The Mascot
Author: Darkerchild
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1304
Author's summary: A compelling story about the love which exists between man and stuffed panda.
Characters/Pairings: Steven Taylor/Hi-Fi
Warnings: Spoilers for The Chase (if you can still call something spoilers after forty years.) Implied sexual relations with an inanimate object.

Recced because: Despite the cracked-out premise (for which you may blame the kinkmeme), this is easily one of the best stories I've read in recent months. It's rare to find fic featuring Steven in the first place—to find it and have it be fic of such imagination and quality is an unexpected pleasure. Darkerchild's fic excels both as character study and in worldbuilding: her version of Earth a hundred years after The Dalek Invasion of Earth is all too real in its dysfunctionality. Steven's experiences under Mechanoid captivity and his descent into madness are similarly well-portrayed. This is an excellent, imaginative fic and I can't recommend it enough.

It's the epic saga of the love between a man and his stuffed panda. How can you not love something like that?

Story: Fall Fast, Fall Free (Fall With Me)
Author: livii
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1115
Author's Summary: The stories they tell are not true; it travels in time as well as space. Steven and Dodo, and what wasn't.
Characters/Pairings: Dodo Chaplet, Steven Taylor, The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a beautifully written look at some characters who don't get nearly enough fic about them. The writing is incredibly lyrical and precise, with not a word wasted or out of place. The characterisation of Steven is particularly good. The sweetness of the first section is balanced but not compromised by Steven's realisation in the second, which gives the story a real edge. It's a story that stays with you.
