Warnings: None given by the author. I'm gonna personally warn for potential steaminess.

Recced because: For the most part, I don't read very much that tends toward out-and-out-Sexy. But this one...I'm amazed it didn't steam up my computer screen! It is, in a word, yummy. It's just irresistible. :D

Author's Summary: From a dingy hotel in Norway, the Doctor and Rose realise something has gone wrong. A timey-wimey interpretation of Turn Left.
Characters/Pairings: Metacrisis Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler, Donna Noble
Warnings: None.

Recced because: By now, some of you may have figured out that I'm a fan of complicated time travel plot devices. This is another example, done spectacularly well. In a sense, this is a fix-it fic for Journey's End but it changes so little from the established events that I hesitate to call it that. For anyone who had issues with the predicament that the Doctor left Rose and his half-human duplicate to deal with, this answers some of those concerns nicely while re-visiting and reframing the events of Turn Left. Beautiful and painful.

Author's Summary: All this time, Tentoo has lived with the burden and haunting guilt of the day he ended the Time War. Well, he says ended, but it’s never really been over for him. Not with what he did, or how he did it. But what if Eleven could somehow get a message through the void to relay what really happened? That it didn’t end the way his part-human self thinks it did?
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler/Metacrisis Doctor, Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: This was posted only yesterday, and I knew that I must add it to my rec list. I wanted to cry the moment I read it. It is simply beautiful, moving, a little but much-needed addition to 'The Day of the Doctor'. Every voice is perfectly in-character. I'm not sure what else to say. Just...enjoy. ♥

Hello all! This is my first time reccing, like, ever, and I am so excited to share some really excellent stories with all of you! My two ships are Ten/Donna and Doctor/River, but I enjoy anything that's really well written. Fics I enjoy are often of a happier or more emotional persuasion, often containing many giggles and fun banter.
This first fic I'm reccing is by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] starjargon, for whom I am honored to beta and who kindly returns the favor. I think you'll all really like it.

Story: May The Best Woman Win
Author: Starjargon
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2948
Author's Summary: Martha and Rose both care deeply for the same man. So of course, the only logical thing to do is fight for him. With jousting poles. AU, obviously.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Canton Everett Delaware III, Donna Noble, Harriet Jones, Harriet Jones, Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, Lynda Moss, Martha Jones, River Song, River Song, Rory Williams, Rose Tyler, Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (11th), The Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a very fun, enjoyable fic that has pretty much every nuWho companion out there, as well as three different Doctors. Incredibly well written, with a strong, even representation of opposing characters, and some fantastic plot twists. It's one of my favorites that she's written, because she handles the complexity of dealing with so many different characters and emotions all at once in such a masterful and brilliant way.

Title: The Man Who Runs, Still Water, and City of Angels
Author: winninghearts
Rating: Teen
Word Count: ~3300 total for the three
Author's Summary: He is the same man he has always been. The same man he always will be.
Characters/Pairings: Duplicate Tenth Doctor, Zeppelin Universe Alt!Amy, TenII/Alt!Amy
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: I actually read the first two back to front, and then the third much later. But they are good in any order. I love the dark wanderlust that pervades these stories, the sadness that dogs both the duplicate Doctor and Amy's heels as they run, Earthbound, on trains and buses, through the life and dirt of the world. Each of them is running from something, or maybe trying to find something that can't ever be recovered. We see echoes of Amy's fantastical journey but redone in the mundane, and we see the toll that the slow path takes on the Doctor. The earth is a prison for both of them, lost possibilities that only the Doctor can recognize, that shadow this universe's Amy like the forgotten ghost of Rory did in the canon universe. It's painful to think of those they left behind and wonder if those relationships could have survived in the canon universe without the promise of the whole of space and time beyond blue doors. It is sad to contemplate, but this series makes me wonder if the best they can do in the alternate world is to keep running.

Author's Summary: River Song unexpectedly arrives on Pete's World. What could possibly go wrong?
Characters/Pairings: River Song, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (Duplicate 10th), TenII/Rose/River
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recc'ed Because: It's more than just a hot threesome. Don't get me wrong, it is a hot threesome, but with plot and original characters and relationships that complement and motivate and outshine the hot threesome. River gets catapulted into the zeppelin universe, where the duplicate Doctor is still trying to suss out his humanity, getting used to not having the TARDIS, getting used to being in a relationship. Rose is curious and smart and realistically a bit jealous, but [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis gives this story time to unfold, explore, and believably grow the relationship between River and Rose, whether the Doctor wants it or not. And at the end, he may juuust finally realize he does.

Recced because: I love a good crack!fic, and this one is especially noteworthy because its humor isn't silly, it's deadpan -- a trick that I didn't realize could even be pulled off in a fic, let alone pulled off as well as it is done here. Rose Tyler becomes a vampire between "Doomsday" and "Journey's End," and if that's not cracky enough for you, plenty of vampire tropes get skewered here, too. (Did I mention that I also love fics that skewer tropes?)

Author's summary:  This new coat wasn’t exactly the same as the old one had been -- it was a much darker brown than the old one had been, it was a several inches shorter, it was missing a pocket and the material wasn’t as soft. But it was close -- the closest he’d seen in this universe, and he’d been looking.
Characters: Rose/Duplicate Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because:
This is a charming bit of lightweight humour, but the story develops into slightly more than mere fluff. The story is about the duplicate Doctor's efforts to find something approximating his beloved brown coat in the alternate universe, but it turns out that the absence of his coat isn't all that's worrying him. A nice little character study!

Author's Summary: Ever wondered why the Eleventh Doctor's sonic screwdriver malfunctioned when he first met Amelia Pond? (Slightly spoiler-ish for "The Eleventh Hour.")
Warnings: None
Recced because: I stumbled across this while I was looking for another story (which turned out to have been recced previously), and laughed like a drain when I read it. A nice little explanation for an odd moment in The Eleventh Hour, which harks back to an earlier episode in the Doctor's life, from an author who hasn't been recced on Calufrax before.

It started innocently enough, so innocuous that Rose hardly noticed the difference.

The Doctor's attention had been absorbed by a small pile of alien technology he'd brought home (against regulations) from Torchwood, when he heard a rather loud hiss of frustration from the other room. "Rose?" He called, slipping his glasses off the bridge of his nose. "Everything alright?"

There a muffled answer, followed by an audible sigh. A moment later, Rose strode into his office, irritation clear in her expression. "This bloody flat is gonna be the death of me."

The Doctor sat up straighter, glancing around for the source of her foul mood. He wouldn't purport to be an authority on the quality of flats, but he thought theirs wasn't too shabby at all: two bedrooms, a cozy sitting room, decent bathroom, and a very quaint little kitchen. They were also just a block away from a wonderful row of little shops. What more could a human need?

Story: Harmony (a Doctor Who Novella)
Author: thebunnyinthetardis
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 60,264
Author's Summary: The Slow Path had never been as agonizing as now. Years had passed since that fateful day when the Doctor had left him with Rose Tyler on a desolate beach in Norway. Years for both of them--and while life had gone on, he was reasonably sure his had not been the fairy tale the Time Lord might have intended it to be. Now, as fate would have it, their paths were once more to cross, leading them on a journey through Time, a journey in Space, and a journey toward Wholeness. A voice he cannot identify calls. A 17th century cannon ball lands in the garden. A blue box he never thought he would see again lands in the forest. And a Time Lord is running out of Time.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, metacrisis Doctor, Rose Tyler, and the other usual suspects
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because:  A few of thebunnyinthetardis' works have been recced, and for good reason. She's an excellent writer.  The voice she uses for the metacrisis Doctor is unique, and the perspective she brings to his character is moving, enlightening, and rings true in every aspect.  It's a painful journey, but it doesn't stagnate and wallow in angst, and is an excellent adventure romp as well as wickedly insightful character development.

This is another long fic, but most of the fics I read are long ones.  I love authors who take the characters on a journey that progresses them beyond what we know and already love about them, and the longer format really gives authors space to play.  In this particular story, thebunnyinthetardis starts with a mystery and artfully feeds us hints and clues in amongst the adventure, building the background of what has transpired in the metacrisis Doctor's life.  It's beautifully done, and the anticipation made me race through the story the first time, and then I went back to re-read it leisurely.  I have a great appreciation for the care and attention she pays to environment, atmosphere, and characterization, and there is more than enough meat in this story to bear up to several re-readings.

There are many TenToo/Rose stories - it's a dime-a-dozen genre in New Who fics, but it's an understandably rich area of canon to mine.  This one is very special and worth a read, even if you're a bit tapped out on the genre.  My eternal pet peeve is the blithe idealisation of the Doctor's transition to humanity and his relationship with Rose, and I'm much more taken with this gritty, honest take.  It's harsh but hopeful, and the adventure plot makes it a very true-to-Who story.  All around a great read.

Story: Void Stuff
Author: gallifreyburning
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3,194
Author's Summary: "Ninety-three trips, including our first stop in this universe and all those dimension cannon jumps afterward. By now, I'm as steeped in the stuff as the Daleks and Cybermen were at Canary Wharf," Rose whispers, the back of her neck prickling and cold. "But you've only been once in this body, haven't you, Doctor? Just once, like Pete."
Characters/Pairings: Ten (duplicate)/Rose
Warnings: None

Recced because: A 3-D movie unexpectedly reminds Rose of her many, many trips through the void, and all the terrible things she saw before she finally found the Doctor – none more terrible than her memories of shock and depression post-Canary Wharf. She learns to move past that and embrace what she has with him now after a very sexy encounter in a chip-shop bathroom, of all places – and while the location itself may lack romance, the romantic connection between the two characters feels very real.

Besides, if you're going to read this fic (and I think you should) you're going to need the extra time...

Story: Terminal Decay
Author: Unslinky
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3,071,407 (yes, you read that right - this is not a typo)
Author's Summary: Set shortly after The Planet of the Dead. AU to everything Doctor Who and Torchwood after that.
Characters/Pairings: Clive Jones, Francine Jones, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, K-9, Leo Jones, Luke Smith, Martha Jones, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Sarah Jane Smith, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (10th), The TARDIS, Tish Jones, Tom Milligan, Torchwood (I've only copied the list of characters Unslinky indicated on Teaspoon because I do not want to spoil what happens in the story! :))
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Explicit Violence, Swearing

Recced because: This fic took Unslinky nearly two years to complete and it has just over a 1,000 chapters. I came across it when the fic had been growing for some time already, but rapidly caught up and then followed it all the way to the end. I realise three million words may seem rather daunting, but trust me when I say that once you start reading this fic, it becomes part of your life shockingly easily and quickly. (I'm rereading it at the moment - worth every step of the way.)

So what makes this fic so captivating? There is more Doctor!Whump out there in which he (nearly) dies [keeping open the outcome so as not to spoil you guys], after all, and those are not as epically long as this fic. There are several reasons.
One is that Unslinky's characterisation is amazing. Unslinky knows how people work, what makes them tick, what makes them laugh, and she manages to write the dilemmas that come with being/caring for a dying alien, the last of his kind, in a way that is incredibly realistic. There are no good or bad guys in this story - everyone has two sides. There will be moments when you really hate a particular character (at least I did), but later that will always be put into perspective because the reasons for their behaviour are revealed and you suddenly understand that even though sometimes people say or do things that make you want to punch them in the face, they're not all bad. Every story has two sides and nothing is ever only black or only white.
That brings me to my second reason: realism. The Doctor is suffering from a degenerating disease, which will kill him if nothing is done, and a lot of people (see character list and then some) get involved. That means there are a lot of angles to be written, a lot of point of views, tensions, opinions - not to mention that an illness as seriously as the one from which the Doctor suffers in this story simply can't be fixed in two or three chapters. The illness is described very naturally, over a period of time, and Unslinky gives us readers wonderful medical details and descriptions without making it too brainy too understand - and then of course there is also the psychological side. The Doctor has to accept that he is ill and that he needs help, he bonds to people in entirely new ways, but the other characters are also affected - they have doubts, are hurt, hope, work, scream, cry (everything you might expect of someone with a close friend who is dying). Rather than rush through events towards a happy ending [or not!], Unslinky isn't afraid of putting the main storyline on hold to be introspective or have a flashback. This doesn't impede the story at all, however, but rather adds to it, shaping the characters and making them incredibly real.
In the end, this didn't feel like a story, but rather as a journey. It has made me look at some characters in an entirely new way and by the time I got to the end I didn't think 'oof, I've finally read it', but rather 'why is this over already?'.

I'm going to be away from my computer tomorrow, so today you get two recs for the price of one! First, today's rec:

Story: Sometime Around Midnight
Author: cereal
Rating: Teen
Word Count:  2818
Author's Summary: It took two months. Two months of takeaway curries and crap television, of rumpled sheets and that spot on her neck that always makes her squirm. Two months of talking about Mickey's new girlfriend and Jackie's new tracksuit and decidedly not what a new, new, new Doctor meant to a new Rose.

Characters/Pairings: Rose/Ten Two
Warnings: None

Recced because: Despite all the grief and aggravation Rose and the Tenth Doctor (and their fans) have given me over the years, I still have a soft spot for stories about Rose and Handy trying to figure themselves out in Pete’s World. Here, they’ve been there for a while and not everything has worked out for the two of them. This Handy is achingly human and lost, and this story hurts, even through the happy ending.

Characters/Pairings: Handy/Rose, Tony, Jackie

Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Handy, Gwen Cooper, Tom Milligan, Sylvia Noble, Wilfred Mott
Warnings: None.

Recced because: If our memories determine who we are (and Time Lords most of all...), what DO the bits we don't remember mean? This story is a beautiful exploration of the people the Doctor left behind, not quite as intact as they used to be, and most importantly - their "regular life" afterwards.

Word Count: 993
Author's Summary: "Hope is a good emotion." The Doctor's got an alien pregnancy. Rose has got baby names.
Characters/Pairings: Handy/Rose
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: Silly crack for Saturday night (or evening, or noon. Or Sunday morning. Depends on where you are). This one takes the ridiculousness of mpreg in both hands, and then puts the Doctor on top (and boy, is Handy here so much the Doctor). We've got Handy getting excited over alien babies' genomes, Rose mocking the Doctor for getting himself pregnant, and names being vetoed. Hooray!

Author's Summary: The aftermath of Rose and the Doctor's first week apart in Pete's universe.
Characters/Pairings: Ten (duplicate)/Rose
Warnings: None

Recced because: I originally saw this story on LiveJournal, but it began on Tumblr as "fic tennis," in which the two authors volleyed 200-word segments back and forth until they completed the story. Honestly, if I hadn't known that's how it was written, I'd have never been able to tell -- that's how seamlessly the authors' styles mesh -- but the Teaspoon version reveals who wrote what. There's a lot to love about this story: the breezy dialogue, the romantic-comedy feel of it, and an excellent sense of the chaos the Doctor would inevitably cause while trying to live a normal, domestic life.

Author's Summary: The singleheart Doctor gets more than he bargained for when he gets a job.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart, Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith, Eight, Ten (human version)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I love alternate universes. I especially love complex and well thought out alternative universes. I especially especially love complex and well thought out alternate universes that give me SO MANY FEELINGS about their characters, even more feelings than I already had. And oh, does this fic deliver. I most of all love the take on Sarah Jane and the Brigadier, and U.N.I.T.'s dark secret. It's threaded through with well-crafted angst, but the ending is the most heartwarming thing I've read in a long time.

Excerpt:

"Well, if you're not going to work for Torchwood, then what are you going to do?"

"I definitely have to get a job?"

"Yes!"

"I could work for UNIT. I've done that before. Not in this universe, perhaps, but they exist here. I saw a truck one time."

"And how are you going to contact them? They're a top secret organisation! They're not exactly going to be in the phone book ..."

Hello and welcome once more to another week of fan fiction picking here on Calufrax! I am James or ‘Derek Metaltron’, your guide for the next few days. It really doesn’t seem that long since the last time I took this awesome responsibility back in early September when Doctor Who and Torchwood were both rounding off and I was a lot freer than I am now, as since then I’ve started my rather extensive postgraduate degree. Still, can’t be so difficult to find some quality fics from all eras of Who, right?

Now to begin we’ll start with some episode tweaking within the still much loved Tenth Doctor era…

###

Story:
A Complicated Event In Time And Space
Author: Aldanon
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 53,493 Words
Author's Summary: It took almost twenty hours to tow the Earth back home after saving all of reality from the Daleks. Set during Journey's End, this story is a compilation of events that took place in the TARDIS and on the Earth in those hours.
Characters/Pairings: Ten II/Rose, Martha/Mickey, Tenth Doctor,  Donna Noble, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jackie Tyler, Rhys Williams, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings:  A fair potion of Angst and Hurt/Comfort for certain characters and a mild case of Whump.

Recced because: As a fan boy and someone who came into Who in the days before the New Series and the suggestion of certain pairings and the like, I tend to view certain kinds of fan fiction warily. However, whilst I’ve always loved the idea of Martha and Mickey getting together I came to love Aldanon’s protrayal of setting up Rose with the duplicate Ten – here, she’s elected to suggest that rather than mere minutes it took many hours for the Earth to be dragged back to its rightful position, leading to the possibility of talks and interactions which Russell denied us. While Ten II/Rose and Mickey/Martha are the main focuses here all the TARDIS crew get a piece of the action. Better yet, this lengthy fic expands into two sequel works which focus on the lives of these two pairings afterwards. In short this is a big read but well worth it!

Story: Everything to Come
Author: abstraction
Rating: all ages
Wordcount: 5632
Author's Summary: They sleep in the same bed. She falls in love with the creaks of wood bending under the wind. The memory of what is beyond the horizon pulls at the beat of your heart, sinks in your blood with a heaviness you have grown to be familiar with. You can't imagine how it must be, then, for him.
Characters/Pairings: Ten II/Rose

A lovely, luminous story to start off the week.

Story: Baby, It's You
Author: Roach Patrol
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4361
Author's Summary: It's New Year's in the alternate universe! What are a half-Time Lord and his intrepid companion to do? Attend a nice party hosted by Richard Lazarus, of course, where there's an anti-aging device that needs disabling and enough running, shouting, and exploding to do to keep them busy all night. Or: What Rose and the alternate Doctor were up to during the End of Time.
Characters/Pairings: Rose/Ten II
Warnings: none listed, but it has one particularly gruesome moment toward the end that's worth mentioning

Recced because: Roach Patrol manages to capture the essence of each Doctor from Ten backwards as an alternate Richard Lazarus's immortality machine has unexpected effects on a half-Time Lord. Her characterization is excellent, and her prose, as always, is beautiful.

If you like this story, please remember to leave the author a comment. Authors like comments, even if they're as simple as "I really like this." It makes us write more.

Story
: Behind Closed Doors
Author: Zephyrhawk
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 86082
Author's Summary: So what now? Life goes on in the alternate universe.
Characters/Pairings: Rose/Doctor (10.5)
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Will make you cry

Recced because: I know there are a lot of these fics out there (I feel like I've read all of them) but this one is by far my favorite. Words cannot describe how good this fic is. It's the kind of story you stay up all night reading and go to work the next day with max half an hour of sleep and are useless all day cause you can't stop thinking about it. It's heartbreaking and satisfying and everything the Doctor (10.5) goes through you really feel it yourself. Beware! You will cry! I actually had to take a break from reading at one point cause I couldn't read the screen I was crying so much.

I don't want to ruin any of the plot for those who haven't read this so I'll just promise this isn't the usual happily ever after fic. They both take time to adjust to each other and it's definitely not a smooth ride. So anyway, in conclusion: Read!

Story: If It's Not Broken
Author: thirty2flavors
Rating: All Ages (I would call it PG, or possibly PG-13)
Word Count: 1045
Author's Summary: Five things that didn't happen after the Doctor left Rose in Journey's End.
Characters/Pairings: Duplicate Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler (some vignettes have them paired, and some vignettes don't)
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: The author presents five possible scenarios for what happened after the TARDIS left that beach in Norway at the end of "Journey's End," and they're all hysterically funny. Really good satire is hard to pull off, but thirty2flavors shows us how it's done.

Story: Eight Days a Week
Author: Roach Patrol
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1089
Author's Summary: Post Journey's End, the Doctor and Rose earn their happy ending. It just takes them a little while.
Characters/Pairings: Duplicate Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler
Warnings: Not unless a warning not to drink anything while reading this counts...

Recced because: Picture this: Rose and the Duplicate Doctor are living in the nice universe. The one with all the friendly aliens. The one where no-one tries to blow anyone up, and when an alien race wants to challenge the Earth for rights to the Solar System they challenge the President to... a cricket match. Oh, and let’s not forget the disparaging aside to Hershey’s chocolate (yes, it really does taste waxy!)

And there are gay Daleks. No, really. This fic is inspired. Sheer brilliance!

Even if you're not normally a fan of Doctor/Rose, give this story a try. I guarantee it's worth it. Have an excerpt to prove it! )

And if you like it, please tell the author!

Story: The Next Day
Author: Karenbee
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3053
Author's Summary: Words didn't seem large enough to express what they were feeling.
Characters/Pairings: TenToo/Rose, Jackie Tyler
Warnings: none

Recced because: (How many post-Journey's End Pete's World fics d'ya think there are? Hundreds? A thousand? Anyway I digress ...) This ranks among my favorite post-JE fics. It's sweet, emotional and while TenToo of course is certainly more openly vulnerable, he retains a hint of Time Lord stoicism in this fic. That's something a lot of writers don't do, often TenToo is written like a normal guy or some slightly geeky guy or an angstmuffin ... this fic remembers that underneath it all lurks a 900+ year old Time Lord. It's that extra infusion of circumspect characterization for him that separates this fic from many other post-JE fics.

Story: Something Borrowed
Author: ProfessorSpork
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 1,807
Author's Summary: After sacrificing himself, the Doctor ends up in the least expected of places. A The Big Bang interlude
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Rose Tyler, Duplicate Tenth Doctor
Warnings:. none

Recced because: I love when a fic can bridge between the Eleventh Doctor and his tenth self, and this one does it perfectly. It weaves so seamlessly into The Big Bang storyline that it’s now in my personal canon. Eleven’s voice is spot on and the whole story leaves you with a bittersweet smile.

Story: A Visit to the Garden
Author: professor pangaea
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5,628
Author's Summary: Mortality, mistakes, loneliness, loss and love. Twenty-nine years seems like a long time for all of that, and like hardly any time at all.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Ten (duplicate)/OC, the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: Bias warning: I was one of the betas for this story, but honestly, I'd rec it even if I weren't, because it is quite simply one of the most beautifully written stories I've ever read about the Doctor's love for the TARDIS. Handy, well-settled into life on Pete's World, still mourns the loss of his most faithful companion, so an unexpected visit from Ten – and a last chance to be with his beloved ship – proves almost more than he can bear. The emotions here are well-drawn and deeply affecting; Handy may miss the TARDIS like nothing else, but he's also surrounded himself with people who love him, and more important, has accepted that love in a way that Ten never did.

Story: Chase Your Demons Away
Author:Thirty2Flavors
Rating:
 All Ages
Word Count:
 3,652
Author's Summary:
Three weeks after Norway, the Doctor bonds with Tony Tyler over a shared affliction -- bad dreams. Tony accepts the man in the hallway as the same flesh-and-blood action hero from all Rose’s stories, full stop. Tony doesn’t find the human warmth of the Doctor’s skin strange or send him pointed looks if he says something more Donna than Doctor. Tony probably doesn’t dream about beaches and pinstripes, either.
Characters/Pairings: 10.5/Rose, Tony Tyler
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It's a bit of a problem, to get Handy quite right - the enough amount of human and Donna while still maintaining a person who's essentially the Doctor is a difficult task. thirty2flavors does a wonderful job of it here, telling what is essentially a human story, but still makes a perfect fit for the Doctor.

Author's Summary: She's doing this to him because she loves him - well, some other version of him. The one in the real world - but she's doing this because she loves him. Really. Really, really. He'll understand soon. Just not right now. But he'll understand. Eventually, Rose Tyler will make him understand everything, even this. darkfic
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Rose…or not. Pete’s World!Jack comes into it as well.
Warnings: Non-con, violence, disturbingness
Recced because: I’m frankly stunned this story hasn’t been recced here before. The Rose it presents is very, very different to the Rose we know, but just similar enough to send shivers up your spine. This story is incredibly dark but the way it plays out, and the sheer quality of the writing, is all so entrancing that you can’t look away. Without spoiling anything, the end is so, so powerful and triumphant and sad. In short, this is one devastating, chilling and utterly disturbing fic, it’s incredibly well written, and it is worth your time.

That would be my final rec for this week. I hope you’ve enjoyed the fics! :)

Story: And Then The TARDIS Fell Into Pete’s World
Author: elisi
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 14042
Author's Summary: The TARDIS falls into Pete’s World. Stuff happens.
Characters/Pairings: Amy/Rory, 10.5/Rose, Eleven, River, the Tyler family
Warnings: none

Recced because:
As full of bubbly goodness as any fine crack!fic, this story also doubles as an excellent character study and exercise in closure. The plot, as described in the title, is basically an excuse to throw together characters unlikely to ever meet in canon, stir them up and see what happens. The result is hilariously satisfying.

And that is my final rec of the week – I’ve had a great time finding a variety of stories and hopefully was able to provide something for everyone to enjoy.

Story: Fade Away
Author: Pitry
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3411
Author's Summary: It was supposed to be different this time. He's human, he can't regenerate - he was supposed to die before her.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Pete Tyler, The Doctor (Duplicate 10th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I wanted to rec something from the classic series, and very nearly did, when i stumbled across this piece. It's lovely and haunting and the style Pitry (the author) uses allows the story to have an emotional impact outside of the sequence of events inside the story, which stops it from, sinking to morose or melodramatic levels of emotion. It's a beautiful story that I didn't want to risk it not being shared until my next turn reccing.

In the end, I guess I did lie to you guys, as these recs were mostly newer series with classic touches thrown in; for that I apologise. However, I do hope you enjoyed my recs even half as much as I enjoyed reccing them and I PROMISE next time will have more classic tales. Until we meet again!

Story: Noble Pursuits
Author: Quean of Swords
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 52k
Author's Summary: In an alternate universe, alternate Donna Noble is a PA at H.C. Clements. Then, one day, her boss tries to feed her to his alien insect offspring. Lucky for her, she is rescued by Rose Tyler of the Insanely Rich Tylers and a mysterious man who calls himself 'the Doctor'... two people who seem to be a bit more familiar with her than they should be. The Doctor, Rose, and the team at Torchwood Alpha (a.k.a. The Warehouse) have to stop an insidious alien invasion before they've even had a chance to settle into their new lives. Will Donna have to chose between helping them or protecting her ailing grandfather?

Warnings: None.

Recced because: This was one of this year's [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang fics, and it. is. marvelous. Among the many things to look forward to: excellent writing, the human Doctor's slow adjustment to his new circumstances, and Donna being, well, Donna. Plus a most entertaining "aliens invading!" plot.

Story: The Further Adventures of Handy the Wonder Clone
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1003
Author's Summary: Today I found the Dimension Cannon in a cupboard. Set it on fire. Well, better safe than sorry.
Characters/Pairings: Duplicate Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler
Warnings: None

Recced because: Because it's crack!fic. Because it's glorious crack!fic. Because it's glorious crack!fic written by Netgirl_y2k, who writes the most glorious of the glorious crack!fic there is.

The fic is written in the form of a diary, telling the tale of how Handy adjusts to his new life in Pete's World. He's having a tough time, because he can't find any alien invasions to foil. Fortunately, the Doctor is very good at problem-solving.

Story: Runaways
Author: the_tenzo
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3161
Author's summary: In the summer of 2011, my grandmother died, my mum had an affair, and the Smiths moved in next door.
Characters: The Doctor (Duplicate 10th), original character
Warnings: none

Recced because: This astoundingly lovely story somehow manages to make me smile and put me right on the verge of tears, all at the same time. The story features no invading aliens, no mystery, and hardly any of the Doctor: it's just an honest tale about growing up (and running away). The Doctor's limited presence injects a special sort of magic to it -- and, let's be honest, who wouldn't have loved to have the Doctor as a next door neighbor?

For my final rec this week, we're going to do the otherside of End of Time, dealing with Ten's regeneration and how it's possible for Ten to have a happy ending regardless of what we saw onscreen.  Also, I've neglected Ten a bit this week, so I need to give him a bit of love.

Story:  Fracture
Author:  Kathryn Shadow

Rating:  All Ages/PG
Word Count: 2169/One-shot
Author's Summary:  He raised a hand and looked at it—saw the glow. The end. Game over. Please try again. Canon-friendly EoT fixfic.

Characters/Pairings:  10th Doctor, 11th Doctor, Rose Tyler Ten.5/Rose Ten/Rose

Recced because:
This rec is for all the people who are still heartbroken over the ending that Ten got in End of Time.  This scenario has been done a few times since EoT aired.  However this gives much sensitivity to Ten's feelings prior as the regeneration happens and his thoughts to the impossible event that happens in the aftermath.  It ranks up there to me as among one of the best EoT fix - its.  No excerpt as I'm not sure where I could put one without it being too terribly sad or spoilery to the story.
