Story: We've Seen It In The Movies (Now Let's See If It's True)
Author: Doyle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1833
Author's Summary: Clyde and Luke drive to Wales and talk about girls. And boys. And pants.
Characters/Pairings: Clyde Langer, Luke Smith (Clyde/Luke pre-slash)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's very funny! I defy you not to giggle whilst reading this story. It also captures beautifully the warmth of the show itself - the depth of affection between the main characters really shines through. The characterisation is excellent, Clyde's voice is spot on, and Doyle manages to suggest four years of friendship with only a few lines.
Plus, there's a blink and you'll miss it Torchwood joke that it took me an embarrassing number of reads to get.

Story: Of a Lifetime
Author: AstroGirl
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1578
Author's Summary: When she was young, Rita knew a man called the Doctor. (Features Rita-Anne Smith, Mickey's grandmother.)
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Rita-Anne Smith, Mickey Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: It takes a minor character and makes her live, as well as showing how meeting the Doctor changes your life. It's understated and very touching. Rita-Anne is a great, well drawn character, and the Tenth Doctor' voice is spot on.

Story: Face Another Day
Author: aces
Rating: None given (teen?)
Word Count: 8526
Author's Summary: "How did you get to twenty-first century Cardiff, Fitzgerald Kreiner?" Jack asked.
Characters/Pairings: Fitz Kreiner, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Owen Harper, Tenth Doctor, Toshiko Sato
Warnings: None

Recced because: It feels real. Fitz starts off in a bad way, and although he ends up at peace, it's not an easy or straightforward progression. Fitz brings himself to Torchwood and tells them he wants to help; this is true, but although he'll help, he won't be co-operative. He doesn't want to talk to them about himself or how he knows what he knows, because then he'll have to face what's happened to him and he's not ready to do that at first. And Team Torchwood, in their turn, don't immediately take him into their respective hearts and set about trying to help him. Their interactions with him feel more authentic because they're not smooth. (Sidenote: aces also does a great job with Torchwood themselves; though none of them except Jack play a particularly large role, they all have some nice character moments and there's a nice group scene that makes me believe that they do all actually like each other, something the show itself was having trouble with for a while.) Fitz's gradual recovery is portrayed very well and the hopefulness of the final scene makes a lovely ending. I could go on at much greater length listing all the things I love about this fic, but I'll spare you my gushing and instead give you a quote:

Story: Things Best Left Unseen
Author: eponymous_rose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 9349
Author's Summary: Who are the ominous-looking men in dark suits and terribly impractical sunglasses, and why are they so convinced that they're about to pull off the greatest heist in the planet's history?
Characters/Pairings: Erimem, Peri Brown, Fifth Doctor

Recced because: The characterisation of Erimem is brilliant and her typically clear-eyed observations of herself and her friends are a joy. She's finding her feet and trying to work out how she fits in with the Doctor and Peri, deciding who she is now she's no longer a pharoah-in-training. She's learning to be brave in a world she never expected, and eponymous_rose conveys this beautifully. The plot is slight but entertaining, the villains are fun and it's told in a beautifully self aware way. And, appropriately for audio fic, I can hear the voices of the characters very strongly in my head as I read.

Story: Observation Interference
Author: Van Donovan
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2874
Author's Summary: Leela runs away with the Doctor's nostalgia.
Characters/Pairings: Four/Leela, Leela/Jo, Doctor/Jo
Warnings: None

Recced because: Van Donovan's characterisation of Leela is brilliant. She leaps off the page in all her pride, her fearlessness, and her ability to cut clear through the Doctor's circumlocutions. It shows how they balance each other - she has a directness that he lacks, but he sees dangers and subtleties that escape her. The Doctor's affection for Jo is touching, and his impatient explanation of what happened to her makes it obvious how much he still misses her. And Leela kissing Jo is wonderful, the reasoning behind it is both very clever and very Leela.

Story: This Torch I've Been Carrying
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1290
Author's Summary: The door opened and out came a sixteen foot scarf. The scarf was wearing a curly haired man.
Characters/Pairings: Harry Sullivan, Jack Harkness, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: This story takes advantage of the TARDIS's capabilities to produce a delightfully twisty set of meetings for Jack and Sarah. The friendship they've developed by the final section is lovely. The characterisation is great and there are some laugh out loud lines - Jack and Sarah's 'first' (as far as he's concerned) meeting is great on both counts:

Story: Fall Fast, Fall Free (Fall With Me)
Author: livii
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1115
Author's Summary: The stories they tell are not true; it travels in time as well as space. Steven and Dodo, and what wasn't.
Characters/Pairings: Dodo Chaplet, Steven Taylor, The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a beautifully written look at some characters who don't get nearly enough fic about them. The writing is incredibly lyrical and precise, with not a word wasted or out of place. The characterisation of Steven is particularly good. The sweetness of the first section is balanced but not compromised by Steven's realisation in the second, which gives the story a real edge. It's a story that stays with you.
