That wasn't intended as a comment on River Song as a character, but rather on Moffat's approach to showrunning, which I feel emphasizes show over tell. River is one of many examples, who just happened to be the pertinent one as relates to the 'woman at the shop'.
No doubt, there are Moffat fans hereabouts too, to whom I wish much felicity of their turn in the Who spotlight. With such a longrunning show, inevitably, there will be bits you don't like; but the converse is that, if you're patient, the bits you don't like will prove just as finite as the bits you do.
