I actually had Like Flowers (http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=16758&textsize=0&chapter=1) picked out as my final rec on Sunday.* I think it's the strongest story in this series and probably DameRuth's best fic, overall.
I agree that a lot of the canon science in Doctor Who is handwave-y, so I usually don't have a problem with the science in fanfic being handwave-y, too, especially when it comes to accepting that two species, evolving galaxies apart, would develop identical reproductive systems. However, it's interesting to see someone refuse to accept this skience. IIRC, DameRuth is a biologist herself.
