Author's Summary: The Doctor is tired but he can't get to sleep. Can Nardole help?
Characters/Pairings: Twelfth Doctor, Nardole
Warnings: None.
Recced because: After the season premiere I was searching for a fic like this, mostly because I wanted to see a fic with Nardole. It's a a spot on characterization of Nardole, and I think it's very adorable he's trying to be helpful to the Doctor and comfort him. It's a platonic piece, but I do see a hint of Nardole caring a little more for the Doctor here. Still, Nardole is the perfect company for the Twelfth Doctor after River, and the author nails their relationship. Plus, Twelve is wonderfully grumpy and spot on as well. A very enjoyable, well-written piece!

Author's Summary: If Clara is an addict then she's not the only one.
Characters/Pairings: Twelfth Doctor/Clara Oswald
Warnings: Explicit Sex, PWP

Recced because: A very enjoyable story that plays on this notion that Clara is "addicted" to the Doctor, that she gets some sort of rush from not only their adventures, but the Doctor himself. Of course, it turns explicit, but I really like the dynamic portrayed by these two in this story, the back and forth, and how the Doctor readily indulges her. A satisfying read.

Recced because: Written from the TARDIS' perspective, the fic portrays a situation where the TARDIS has to find a way to save the Doctor. Although the Twelfth Doctor is tagged in the fic, it could actually be any Doctor, so feel free to imagine your favorite. I love fics about the TARDIS, and this is one of the best I've read.

Recc'ed Because: Oh, I'm a sucker for the twisted Doctor/Master relationship in any incarnation. And this one reminds us that despite her regeneration, the Master is still the Master, still showing the Doctor just how much she loves him by how much she can hurt him. I like how this piece also shows a damaged but still recognizable Doctor, who just might want to be broken--but only by her.

Author's Summary: Backstory. (Spoilers for Hell-Bent and Planet of the Spiders)
Characters/Pairings: One

Recced because: It's New Year's Day, at least in my time zone, so let's take things back to the beginning, shall we? In fact, let's take things all the way back to the point where the Doctor is still a little boy, and his problematic parentage renders him less than suitable to be raised in Gallifreyan high society. But this isn't to say that there aren't people who care for him, who do their best to set him on the right path – and who teach him he can be loved, and respected, and most of all, worthy. It's a bittersweet but ultimately hopeful story, and one of my favorites of the past year. I hope it becomes one of yours, too.

Word Count: 3552
Author's Summary: Missy blackmails the Doctor into spending some time with her at a posh hotel. Yay?
Characters/Pairings: Twelfth Doctor/Missy (mentions of River/Doctor)
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: Missy blackmails Twelve into a romantic holiday. It could never go well, but the really terrible thing is it’s not as bad as the Doctor would like it to be. This is just so funny and sharp and true to the pair of them (and Doctor-Master relationships generally). In particular, Twelve’s continual annoyance throughout the fic is a joy to behold, though Missy’s constant needling isn’t far behind.

Have a snippet to tempt you:

This wasn't going at all well, which was only to be expected. He was being blackmailed into a holiday and it wasn't even a good one. He found a barstool and a drinks list and waited for the barman to notice him. He half wished he'd changed into something cooler, but he knew Missy would have taken that to mean he was prepared to enjoy himself.

“What will it be?”

“Water, with ice, and a banana daiquiri for my... “ Arch-nemesis? Best enemy? Former friend? “Annoying woman in black.”

Characters/Pairings: The Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Liz Shaw, Jack Harkness, Donna Noble, the Tenth Doctor, The Master (Delgado), River Song, the TARDIS
Warnings: None stated

Recced because: The Doctor is thinking of getting a pet snake, the Brigadier fudge personal files and the Master takes a part time job at Torchwood. What is not to love? The fic consist of a couple of short scenes with various characters that are described spot on and why they want to find, or hide, the Doctor. I laughed out loud several times while reading it.

Summary: The Doctor reluctantly assists Missy's life of crime.

Recced because: This story is Classic Master. Missy keeps the Doctor and the reader guessing all the way through - the prose is crisp, the banter is strong, and the characterization fitting. The Master is simultaneously superior and vulnerable, the Doctor frustrated and reluctantly fond, and there is a customary blend of trust and mistrust between them. Good Missy stories are hard to find, and this is a good one.

Author’s Summary: The Doctor visits River to ask an important question. (Post-Kill The Moon, so spoilers etc.)
Characters/Pairings: the Twelfth Doctor/River Song

Recced because: Sometimes fic, good fic, makes us uneasy, or leaves us wondering “Is that really the way my beloved characters think?” Every so often that’s a good thing, something spiky and uncomfortable here in the land of fanfic, where we often go for the sunshine and fixit, and quite rightly want the characters we love to be happy. [ profile] nostalgia_lj is a past master of writing beautifully uncomfortable stories. Her phraseology and sense of timing are superb, as is her sense of the absurd (and her ability to match transcendence with black or cracky humor.) In this story, matching Twelve with River, we see what could arguably be the most alien part of their relationship; the implacable logic that rules at least part of their minds and souls. (For something incandescently beautiful from this author, try “Blue Roses.”)

Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2,287
Author's Summary: In which Clara may or may not be pregnant.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven/Clara
Warnings: swearing; possible dubcon during offscreen sexual activity

Recced because: In a universe with canonical time travel, a hero who regenerates instead of dying, and villains who can literally threaten all of reality itself, how much more of a leap is a temporally displaced pregnancy? Not much of one, in my opinion, and it's the premise of this story: Clara is going to be pregnant with the Doctor's child in three weeks, and she doesn't want to be, so surely as long as she and the Doctor avoid each other, everything will turn out fine, right? But of course, that's far easier said than done.

With this premise, you could go creepy or comedy, and while the creepy approach would be equally fine with me, Nos' touch here is much lighter. "Temporal Displacement" is breezy and funny without going over the top into crack – and ultimately, it's a surprisingly romantic tale.

Recced because: This is one of those rare fics where you finish reading it and then think, "Wow." And then you go to read it again. No, of course I haven't forgotten that I'm reccing here these two weeks - I'm just spreading them out a bit. Yes, that's right. Spreading them out. Clearly. Anyway, without further ado:

Story: Blood From A Very Tall Stone
Author: nostalgia
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1,416
Author's Summary: So, like, Romana and Duggan clearly liked each other in 'City Of Death'. This is the post-ep fic about how the Doctor was like really jealous or something. Can the epic timelove be saved? Will K-9 survive? What happens to the cups of tea that vanish early on in the story?
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None that I can think of

Recced because: Well, as may have become embarrassingly clear based on some of my earlier reccing spells, I'm more than a bit partial to a bit of Four/Romana, especially Four/Romana II, and even more especially when it evokes the spirit of those gloriously silly Season 17 stories as well as this does.

File this one under the by now bulging dossier of fics I can't believe hadn't already been recced on the comm. I mean, it's a really good fic by a well-known member of the LJ Whofic community and it seems like years since I first read it (five years in fact, from the timestamp on the review I left over on Teaspoon), so it would seem to be a shoe-in for having already been brought up here. In fact I was fairly sure it had been, but it turns out not.

The idea of a Romana/Duggan "thing" during City of Death, and of imagining the Doctor's reaction afterwards seems by now to be a well-worn path for Four-ficcers to take, although it's always interesting to see the different takes on it. For my money, this is one of the very best versions out there, and what really makes it work is the dialogue. Sparkling, I believe is the word for it. Every other line is a zinger. Those wonderfully absurdist word-games that the Doctor and Romana managed to veer into at the most unlikely moments, rendered here with incredible fidelity to the original source material. It's a bit of a cliché to observe when praising dialogue in fanfic that you can hear the original actors saying the words, but I really can when I read this. And as I know from bitter experience, unless you're a genuine comedic genius like Douglas Adams (and who of us is?) writing that stuff even reasonably well is hard. So hats off, really, to anybody who can do it as seamlessly as in this fic.

So yes, if Four/Romana is your thing, then this is the real deal. 24 carat stuff. Go and check it out and leave a word or two of appreciation.

Story:  All That For A Rubbish Punchline
Author: Nostalgia
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 752
Author's Summary: Err, it might be a DW/Hitchhiker's Guide crossover. Only not. Ten/Jack
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: I know, we're not supposed to rec the same pairing all the time. I have not recced this fic for the pairing, however. I've recced it for the crossover (even if the author doesn't actually classify it as a crossover). I think it's fair to assume that people who like Doctor Who have at least heard of the HItchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (seen the film, read the book(s), etc.). Nostalgia does a great job mimicking the overall Hitchhiker-tone and it really made me giggle (I mean, this is lovely: 'The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy has this to say about the Doctor: "Freelance chaotic element. If something bad happens to you, it's probably his fault. Has attractive sidekicks."').
This fic is a great start of the day. Today is Wednesday, the middle of the week, often that point in your weekly cycle when you think 'I wish it was the weekend' - this fic is certain to brighten your day. Best read over breakfast (be careful not to splurt your weetabix over your laptop, though.)
The beauty of short fic (and short stories in general) is that a lot can be poured in a very small amount of words - and Nostalgia does a great job. This is just packed with a lot of info that makes both reading and rereading it a joy.

Eloquent, short, funny - the punchline is also good (and not rubbish at all).
(If you're reading this, I recommend pretending Stephen Fry is the narrator.)

Warnings: explicit sex, swearing

Recced because: After a week of reccing some fairly heavy, introspective/emotional stuff, I thought I'd close with something light and fun.

While I sometimes find PWPs enjoyable even if I don't really buy into the pairing, after a while -- no matter how well-written -- they can tend to all sort of blur together for me. Which is why I love this little thing. It may or may not have been meant as crack, but to me it's a hilarious and brilliantly blunt satire. I'll never look at that sort of story the same way again.

Author: nostalgia
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1117
Author's Summary: Sherlock/Who crossover.
Characters/Pairings: Sherlock Holmes, John Watson, Mycroft Holmes (Sherlock versions), Ace, River Song
Warnings: None

Recced because: Well, the main reason is probably summed up by the author's extremely succinct summary. Sorry to be reccing two crossovers back-to-back, but this is another one of those stories that I came across very recently and which immediately jumped to the front of my "to rec" list. I like Sherlock. I like it a lot - it's like substitute new Who for when there's no new Who on. That's the first reason why I want to rec this - the take on the Sherlock characters and their interactions with the Whoniverse as Sherlock takes on the task of investigating the Doctor's "death" after S6 is very well done. Of course Mycroft would know all about the Doctor's involvement with UNIT; of course Sherlock would see him almost as another worthy adversary even if he's supposed to be dead. And of course John would be shaking his head at the idea of the other two believing in alien invasions etc. The thing that really made me want to recommend this, however, was the story's middle section where the detective duo visit one of the Doctor's old companions in an effort to track him down, my favourite companion as it happens, because I think we need more fic elaborating upon that throwaway line in the SJA story "The Death of the Doctor". I know, there are other examples out there, but we need more!

Anyway, go and read this, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Word Count: 1179
Author's Summary: The awfulness of being Amelia Song, aged 14.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor/River Song, Amelia Song (OC)
Warnings: Spoilers through the finale of S6

Recced because: There's nothing better than starting off a week with humor, so here is a story that is just marvelous fun from start to finish. Amelia Song, daughter of the Eleventh Doctor and River Song, is a wonderfully surly teenager with two parents who are surprised by her existence. The author sets up the ridiculous situation and then never misses a target or a joke, whether that target is parenthood, teenager-hood, or the timey-wimeyness of Series 6. Enjoy.

Author: nostalgia
Word Count: 4,067
Author's Summary: In which Eleven and Romana have an exciting adventure.
Rating:all ages
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (11th), Romana, River
Warnings:. none

Recced because: I adore it when when an author can successfully blend old and new Who, and this story does a lovely job of it. At first the story seems to skip lightly over the fallout from the Time War, but a careful read pulls a host of subtleties into Eleven and Romana’s interactions. But this fic turns truly wonderful when River is thrown into the mix.

Oh, I owe you guys two today as I missed yesterday? Okay then, First up is:

Story: The Space Race
Author: nostalgia
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3261
Author's Summary: Stuck on Earth with River Song, the Doctor has to cope with domesticity and marriage. It goes about as well as you'd expect.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven/River Song
Warnings: None
Recced because: I love "stranded" stories that reveal a shade of the Doctor's vulnerable side when he loses the TARDIS (or misplaces her, or has her very nicely carjacked, or stolen by weeping angels, etc). In this one, Eleven and River end up in 1950's Britain. The Doctor is determined and resourceful, and the loss of connection to the TARDIS only comes though in brief snapshots. He's definitely more at a loss on the domesticity front. River is just as frustrated as the Doctor at their predicament, and at the gender politics of the era, and at the outset she just sees the part where they have to play at being married as one hell of an opportunity. But the Doctor's not the only one whose vulnerabilities peek through at the edges of this story, and maybe they both need each other more than they let on.

Anyway, go read it; it's sweet, funny, and a bit naughty, with witty dialogue, a happy ending and a bit of world-saving on the side.

Author's Summary: In which the Doctor wants Sarah Jane to babysit.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: None
Recced because: The first time I read this, I had tears in my eyes from laughing. Re-reading it now, after losing Lis Sladen, feels... bitter sweet, yet it's a wonderful reminder of the gift we had in Sarah Jane Smith. Author: Nostalgia
Word Count:1477
Author's Summary:In which loving someone in chronological order is for losers. (Eleven/River)
Characters/Pairings:11th Doctor/River Song
Warnings: explicit sex, swearing

Recced because: Most of us assume that, at some point, the Doctor's mind changes in regard to River Song, this story delves into that mental switch and does so with a delicate touch that's as amusing as it is refined. The characterisations are spot-on and Nostalgia (the author) has The Doctor's mentality down to a "T". I like so much about this short piece it's hard for me to explain why I like it.  Blending an idea from a throwaway line in The Shakespeare Code, Freema's real-life tattoo, and two of the Doctor's personas into a powerful ficlet takes skill.  Nostalgia uses the butterfly as a symbol of the Doctor's companions; ephemeral creatures that flit through his life so briefly.  The last line packs a real punch.

Recced because: Doctor Who is packed with fantastic worlds and roller coaster adventures. Sometimes, though, you just want to tune in to the quieter moments, the conversations you know companions must have over tea and beer. Because that's where the real train wrecks lie.

Down the Pub is a bitingly cracky tale not just of two companions colliding with each other, but of one era of Who talking to another. And social awkwardness. And alcohol.

This is a quite moment of contemplation as the Doctor sits with an old friend whom he loves dearly, but will never travel with. It’s the little touches that make this work; the contrast between home and space, and the way Nonstalgia instils a sense of time and place while never really specifying either.

Characters/pairings: Fitz, Anji, the Doctor (Eighth)
Warnings: Some profanity, the slightest oblique hint of meta, irreconcilable economic theories

Recced because: Bored Game of Death does exactly what it says on the tin: Fitz, Anji, and the Doctor sit down to play a nice board game with each other. But as we all know, the greatest perils of travelling on the TARDIS don't require setting foot outside it.

Crackfics—or cracky humor fics—are a dime a dozen in this fandom. Hell, really good crackfics are all over the place, even; we're a productive fandom and the source material is made for it. But this one retains a very special place in my fannish heart, and it's not just because it made me cry with laughing the first time I read it. It's because it pulls off even the sharpest of its humor with real affection, and because the characters just work.

The characters are so well drawn, in fact, that you can probably read this and enjoy it if your only exposure to Eight is the TVM—it worked for me, when I first read it years ago. And it made me realize that this was a TARDIS team I had to try.

But I really doubt I can give a better rec than an opening excerpt, so without further ado:

Hello everyone, my name is [ profile] radiantbaby and I will be reccing this week here on [ profile] calufrax.

I've been a fan of Doctor Who since I began watching it in the 80s on the local/Georgia PBS station, but it honestly wasn't until S3 of New Who that I really got heavily into fandom.

This week I will be reccing a mixed bag of primarily New Who-oriented fics that are mostly shippy in nature, but also some gen fic as well.

Recced because: This short ficlet was one of the first fanfics I read when I immersed myself in fandom and, honestly, it is probably the one that made the biggest impression on me and my ideas about the Ten/Martha relationship. I think this fic is an excellent portrait of the dysfunctional nature of this pairing and how much the Doctor holds back, even when -- in my opinion -- he doesn't want to. I love the way [ profile] nostalgia_lj renders the Doctor's inner monologue and self-effacing introspection. This Doctor is a bit broken and he knows it, but as he says in the beginning: the universe "owes him something fun and uncomplicated that doesn't end in tears".

Ten visits Zoe, (mostly) all grown up, living her organized life in her linear, efficient world, and remembering nothing (except, maybe, dreams of things that never were). Both characters' voices are dead on, from a Doctor who knows he shouldn’t do this and yet can’t stop himself from leaving a mark, to a Zoe who admits to possibilities but hasn’t had the experience to let her free herself from her background and upbringing. This is beautiful and cold, and the last two lines are devastating.

Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: This fits so much into so little space. Mythic and haunting; you'd never think that a happy ending could be so chilling.

Story: Wanted: Human Woman
Author: Nostalgia
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1004
Author's Summary: Post-LoTL crackfic, as the Doctor sets out to get a companion properly this time.
Characters: The Doctor (10th)

Recced Because: A companion-seeking Doctor writes a personal ad, which is much more difficult than he expects. The Doctor's inner monologue is particularly entertaining and, once again, the author crams a lot of laughs into a short piece of fiction.

Story: Catalyst
Author: nostalgia
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1286
Author's Summary: "So in 1982, the Doctor becomes, for a week, a chemistry teacher."
Characters/Pairings: Ace, Ten
Warnings: none

Recced because: I love stories with criss-crossing timelines (very wibly-wimey timey-wimey, before Moffat made it cool), and Ace's interactions with Ten are spot-on. The Doctor is the same person with Ace that he was / will be, and this story is both painful and hopeful at the same time - just like the best of Doctor Who.

Story: Notes on the Domestication of Birds
Author: Nostalgia
Rating: None, but I'd call it Teen
Word Count: 21,930
Author's Summary: He doesn't do domestic.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Rose
Warnings: None

Recced because: I debated with myself for a long time about whether to rec this story. On the one hand, it is my favorite fanfic (yes, even though it is babyfic, which I normally loathe); on the other, it's quite well-known, and hardly needs my recommendation. Finally I decided that the story's approach to an Earth-bound Ten/Rose relationship was rather timely, given the events of "Journey's End," and that it was worth linking here in case there were people who hadn't yet read it.

As I mentioned earlier this week, I have a real soft spot for stories where the characters are forced – and fail – to live normal domestic lives, and "Notes" is a classic in that genre. Nostalgia's characterization is perfect – no surprise, since she's a terrific writer, but an even more impressive task when you realize that when she wrote "Notes," the only Ten episode she had to rely on was "The Christmas Invasion." Fundamentally, the problem she tackles here is the same one Paul Cornell tackled in Human Nature – can the Doctor change enough of his basic personality to survive as a human? The answer unfolds over five chapters that are clever, fascinating, humorous, and ultimately, heartbreaking.

Story: Twentyish Lies Told To Rose Tyler
Author: nostalgia
Rating: All Ages
Word Count:
Author's Summary: "Please select from the following options."
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because:
I've posted some rather series stories and I want to end it with some fun crack!fic.

The fic is (as the titles says) twentish lies that the Doctor told Rose, each of which is hilarious and will brighten up your day. It is difficult to pick a favourite but I love number ten: 10. By an unusual quirk of time travel, I am both of my own parents.

Please leave feedback if you read.

Story: The Women
Author: nostalgia
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 403
Author's summary: Lucy/Martha, subject matter may upset some people
Characters/Pairings: Lucy/Martha
Warnings: I should hope abortions don't need warnings

Recced because: It's fairly common to find babyfic on the Teaspoon. Frankly, they're a dime a dozen. But a fic where the characters seriously consider abortion as a response to an unplanned pregnancy? Ah, there's a rare bird indeed. Rarer still is a fic where the character in question goes through with the abortion. The Women is one such fic.

It's quite short--barely four hundred words--but every word is carefully chosen and the effect is powerful in its simplicity. The mood is quiet and tranquil, not necessarily something you would expect from the subject matter, and the unexpected relationship between the pregnant Lucy Saxon and Martha, the only doctor she can trust, develops with perfect dreamlike logic. Nostalgia is known for writing very good fics, but I think she really outdoes herself with this one.

Story: We'll Always Have... You Know
Author: nostalgia @ Teaspoon / [ profile] nostalgia_lj @ LJ
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1,824
Author's Summary: Inexplicably in love with Donna, the Doctor decides to relive that honeymoon he had with Romana. It goes as well as you'd expect.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Donna Noble, Martha Jones
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: Nostalgia's crack!fic is the cure-all for everything that's wrong with the universe. I'm convinced of it. At the very least, if [ profile] nostalgia_lj's fanfic doesn't solve all that's wrong with the universe, it's the cure-all for everything that's wrong with New Who.

In this fic, the Tenth Doctor realizes that he's in love with Donna while in the shower (yes, like that); calls Martha for advice on seducing human women; concludes that Martha may not have been serious when she suggested "lead her on with mixed signals while making her work as your servant for months at a time"; receives feedback on his Angel/Spike slash fic; tries to recreate that date he had in Paris with Romana by substituting Donna; and comes to recognize that friendship can often be more important (and saner) than passionate love.

Story: Donna: the Beta Reader
Author: Nostalgia
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1387
Author's Summary: In which the Doctor writes some fanfic and Donna… is Donna.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, the Doctor (10th)
Warnings: Language

Recced because: Every writer should consult a beta reader. But when an innocent request for a beta becomes a shipwar, the Doctor thinks twice about sharing his Angel fanfic with Donna. This concise, fantastic bit of humor is exactly the kind of fiction that I like to read.

The Doctor blushed. "Neither of them are me! I don't write that sort of fanfic! I write intelligent, thoughtful prose which is, for your information, very well received on the internet."

Story: blame the sun (no sun of mine)
Author: nostalgia
Rating: None, but I'd call it Teen
Word Count: 1,685
Author's Summary: "If it's alien, it's ours." (AU from Army of Ghosts)
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Yvonne Hartman
Warnings: None

Recced because: Another unusual pairing – so unusual, in fact, that this is one of only two Ten/Yvonne stories I'm aware of. Choosing between the two of them was quite difficult, but this one won out for its portrayal of the calculating and manipulative Yvonne and the way she worms her way into the Doctor's life. The Doctor, held prisoner by Torchwood, reluctantly begins to help his captors, while Yvonne's obsession with all things Doctor begins to evolve into something she never expected. It's not a cheerful story, but it will make you wish the two characters had had more than an episode and a half together.
