merryghoul: river song (river song blue)
[personal profile] merryghoul
Story: Merry Christmas, Simon
Author: TygerTyger
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5302
Author's Summary: River and the Doctor are on the trail of the Krampus.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor/River Song, Other Characters
Warnings: None

Recced because: For my last rec, I wanted to rec something in the spirit of Christmas and this year's Christmas special, "The Husbands of River Song." I decided upon this fic, told from a viewpoint of a woman who overhears the Doctor and River arguing about capturing something. The woman later finds out the creature the Doctor and River are hunting is targeting her son. The story moves quickly and has equal parts action, suspense, and comedic squabbling between the Doctor and River.

My last of the two-week stint! I hope everyone has enjoyed me blathering on about my favorites. Don't forget to feed the authors. I'll end with:

Title: Sleep and Death are Brothers
Author: TygerTyger
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3865
Author's Summary: Junior doctor, Clara Oswald, never in her life expected to meet anyone like the Doctor. If only he wasn’t on his deathbed.
Characters/Pairings: Clara Oswin Oswald, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: It's a short, surreal mystery, where the setting may not be what it seems, but the sadness it's steeped in hits close enough to the truth to keep hurting when the scales are lifted. It has wonderful dialogue & imagery, fluid and changing yet accepted as such, the way you only can in dreams. From the author's notes, it's her own attempt to get her head around Clara, early early on in Series 7. What's also fascinating about it is that even though it was written only back after the airing of "The Snowman," it still fits seamlessly into the adventures in series 7b as well. Clara is brave and smart and kind, all of the ingredients the Doctor needs to keep his center, in any univese real or imagined.

I queued this one so I hope it works out.

Story: Too beautiful to live
Author: TygerTyger
Rating: teen
Word Count: 1702
Author's Summary: "I didn’t kick you out. I gave you up."
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Rory Williams
Warnings:  trigger warnings for infertility, miscarriage and surgery trauma.

Recced because: Asylum of Daleks was without doubt my favourite episode of series 7A. Granted, it isn’t flawless, but the one thing it made absolutely clear I think is that travelling with the Doctor is not without risks and can leave scars. It was hard-breaking to learn that what Amy went through in ‘A Good Man Goes To War’ has in fact had serious consequences, and this fic explores that concept beautifully but also respectfully. The author describes it as ‘tough to write, and likely tough to read’, and I agree with that. It turns one of the most memorable visual moments of the episode into something else entirely, but somehow it fits. Most of all though, it is a bittersweet study of Amy and Rory and their relationship, and it fits into the series seamlessly.

I was going to rec it in combination with another story by pocketmouse; second and third definitions, but that fic was recced not so long ago (all the better, it is well worth a read). During one of my late-night treks through the teaspoon I stumbled upon them one after the other, and consequently they are now forever linked in my mind. I encourage you to read this one first and then (re)read Pocketmouse’s story.

Oh and as always, let the author know what you think.

Hello again! It's me, [ profile] eve11, ready for another round of recs. You know, I checked the tags and I've done 50 recs for this comm! So, starting the next 50:

Title: Pack Up the Moon and Dismantle the Sun
Author: TygerTyger ([ profile] easytheretyger on LJ)
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 16532
Author's Summary: River hasn’t seen her Doctor in a very long time and decides to request opportunities to work towards a pardon. The only offer comes from the last organisation she would want, the Church.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven, River, Amy and Rory
Warnings: Swearing

Recc'ed Because: This is a look at the events leading up to early series 5, in a new light entirely, from River's perspective in Stormcage. It's a difficult story to read: we all knew her lines from series 6 about losing the Doctor by degrees, but in this story you actually see it. You have a River who by virtue of their twisted timelines, has spent years alone in Stormcage and who is not sure she will ever see the man she loves again, or if she does, if he will recognize her. It presents a very realistic motivation in her working with the Church and Father Octavian. It's sad but hopeful, and tells a story on the edges of another unfolding story; the story of a life well-lived that ends where we know it will but makes it all the more moving for knowing the road that led there. It reads like a novel, effortless and forthright but painting a picture in scene and dialogue, with recognizable characters throughout and fully realized original characters in the wings as well.
