Author's Summary: "Honestly, Charley, I leave you alone for one afternoon and you get arrested for grand larceny!" Charley was just minding her own business in the lobby of the Hotel Delilah when a perfect stranger took her by the arm and declared that they were married. Now she's fallen in with a jewel thief and things are getting very silly indeed.

Author's Summary: Eight, Charley, and an alien snowy wonderland with no peril for once...
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Charley Pollard, slight Eight/Charley
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is such a cute, fluffy little piece between the Eighth Doctor and Charley. Eight's voice is perfect, and Charley's cynicism of such a peaceful place is well justified, knowing what kind of trouble these two are always finding. I loved the ending too, if there's nothing happening, why don't you make your own waves? Though author perfectly portrays a cute little moment between these two characters. Honestly, it would seem unnatural if these two found a peaceful moment... they are more inclined for adventure and challenges! No wonder Charley feels so out of place no matter how sweet it is... A very enjoyable little tale.

Story: The Sleepwalker

Word Count: 20082
Author's Summary: “One day the Doctor woke up. (Eight/Master - written for the Buffy 'Normal Again' prompt on Best_Enemies)”
Characters: Charley Pollard, C’Rizz, Grace Holloway, Romana II, The Doctor (8th), The Master (Roberts), LOTS of Eight companions, in passing
Pairings: Eight/Roberts!Master
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing (I’d add major character death, self-harm due to the mechanism of a plot thing)
Recced because:

The Doctor keeps swapping between his life on the TARDIS and a mundane AU where he’s a physicist teaching at Berkley in 2001, married to Roberts!Master and surrounded by people he knows in canon, but with switched-around names. Is it a fluff piece about them being humans and married and the Master mostly not being a terrible person who’d kill people? Or is it really disturbing and sad, a set up predicated on psychological weaponry (the origins of the Daleks’ Nightmare Child project) from the start of the Time War? Perhaps that depends on how creeped out you are by the ‘which of these lives is real’ “Normal Again” dilemma.

Story: The Doctor Cooks (The Eleventh Time Lucky Remix)
Author: paranoidangel
Rating: All Ages

Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond/Rory Williams, First Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Susan Foreman, Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot, Third Doctor, Jo Grant, Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Fifth Doctor, Tegan Jovanka, Nyssa, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane, Eighth Doctor, Charley Pollard, Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble.
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor claims he can cook. Actually, as it turns out, the Doctor has always claimed that he could cook. This fic starts off with the Eleventh Doctor promising to cook a special meal for Amy and Rory, and then moves on to a series of flashbacks that show past Doctors, past companions, and past culinary (mis)adventures. Much of it is very funny, but there is also a wonderful depth to the writing, especially in the framing story of Eleven, Amy, and Rory.

Recced because: Don't we all like a little happy piece of fluff? I was giggling all the way through this one, and they have the Eighth Doctor to a T. It's got very nice pacing, little short 'bits' making up the full story. Recced because: Extremely well written and plotted, this fic could almost be a direct transcript of a Big Finish audio. The relationship dynamics between Charley and Eight are pretty much spot on, as well as the addition of tension between the two after such a long period of time. If I say too much more I'll ruin it, but just know that you are in extremely safe hands with this fic.

Author's Summary: One must be for ever drunken. With wine, with poetry, with virtue, with what you please, but drunken.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Charley Pollard
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: It is a really striking character study of both Charley and the Doctor, the one she's still getting to know after being left behind in the Girl Who Never Was. Theirs is kind of a prickly relationship, but not in the way Six and Peri are, more so because Charley has to harbor secrets about the fact that she knows the Doctor in his future, daresay fell in love with him, before the days of the reboot when that was a more common occurrence. I love this story because it is quintessentially Charley and Six in the language and characterization, but you see glimpses of others. In the audios, it's hard to see Charley and Six in the same dynamic as she had with the Eighth Doctor. But Six is a romantic at heart beneath his bluster, and this story reminds Charley as well as us that even this most bombastic of regenerations is still the man she loves.

Hello everyone, I'm annauq and I'm back for another round of reccing!
To start of my week(s) I have something featuring one of my favourite tardis teams.

Story: Tea in the tardis
Author: platoapproved
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1310
Author's Summary: The Doctor and Charley make C'rizz drink a cup of tea for the first time. Set after Caerdroia.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (8th), Charley Pollard, C'rizz, the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: Well-written C'rizz fic, do I need another reason? the Doctor makes tea, Charley has a laugh and C'rizz is confused by it all. It's full of little references to their adventures and feels like part of one. In short: it captures the feel of their era perfectly(is it an era, can I call it an era?): it's cute, hilarious but also a little bit angsty.

Platoapproved writes C'rizz's wonder and confusion wonderfully without making him sound childish or naïve. His unique qualities are subtly explored, and his fears feel very real without completely taking over the scene. I've always thought C'rizz was a fascinating character, and I'm forever sad his personality didn't get explored more before he, euhm.. left.

Apparently a mark of great (big finish) fanfic is when you hear the voices of the characters in your head as you read, and that is certainly the case here. So, go ahead and read!

And already it is my last rec! I really enjoyed doing this, thank you all for having me.

Story: Measuring Up
author: Moonmonkey
word count: 1701
author's summary: The writing is on the wall but, once again, it seems the Doctor is failing to grasp some fairly basic facts. Follow up to "True Colours". Now with new Rose & Ten scene added.
characters/pairings: Eight Doctor, Charley Pollard, Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler
warnings: none

recced because: Although I like all Doctors, Eight is my favourite, and since there is a serious lack of good fluffy Eight and Charley fic, I’d like to finish the week by offering you this.

I don’t think there is a Doctor who works quite as well with fluff as Eight. Sometimes it seems like he’s made of the stuff. This story certainly brings out everything I love about Eight; his obliviousness to perfectly obvious things, his feigned innocence and his ability, seemingly more so than any other Doctor, to end up in extremely silly situations and still be perfectly himself. His dialogue here with Charley is great, funny and above all: fluffy. You know a story is good when you can hear the voices of the characters in your head, and that is the case here. If that hasn’t convinced you yet, then there is also a short second chapter with Ten and Rose which is just as great, funny and fluffy.

It says in the author’s summary that it is a follow up to another story, but you don’t need to have read that one in order to understand this one. (Although if you want more Eight and Charley fluff, definitely go and check it out).
[identity profile] derekmetaltron.livejournal.com

Well it’s Day Two of the fic picking! Last time I was doing this I mentioned a fondness for Big Finish’s Doctor Who Audios and that delightful Edwardian Adventuress, Charlotte Pollard (known as Charley to Friends) and her friend the Eighth Doctor. And just as last time I showed you a peek into a missing moment aboard the TARDIS, here’s another!

Story:  Plum Pudding
Author: moonmama

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2861 Words
Author's Summary: Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without it. Immediately after the events of The Chimes of Midnight, the Doctor tries cooking. Charley tries to understand the nature of love.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Charley Pollard
Warnings: Some spoilers for the story The Chimes of Midnight.

Recced because: Well The Chimes of Midnight is my favourite Eighth Doctor story ever and whilst I’d admit some knowledge of that tale wouldn’t hurt before reading this it’s still a great tale – all you need to know that in the aftermath of their most recent excursion, the Doctor’s taken a shine to try baking Plum Pudding in the TARDIS (which considering its usage in the previous tale Charley finds shocking). And this of course leads to some fun kitchen based antics as the console each other over the weird temporal circumstances they previously experienced. Add a dash of romance and you’re all set!

Welcome to Day Five of the fic picking from me! If there's one aspect of the Doctor Who Expanded Universe I adore it's the Big Finish Audios with their grand epic new adventures for the surviving classic Doctors. And as well as several old favourite companions returning like Nyssa, Peri and Ace, we also get some new ones who are every bit as entertaining and engaging. Of all of them I'd say my two favourites are Evelyn Smythe and the companion in this story, Charley Pollard!

Story: Coming Home
Author: Howlcastle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3867
Author's Summary: Charley Pollard's first introduction to the TARDIS. Set after Storm Warning.
Characters: Eighth Doctor, Charley, 'Ramsay'
Warnings: None

Recced because: As the author here writes and for myself for many years I bemoaned the fact that Charley - an self-proclaimed Edwardian Adventuress who'd joined the Eighth Doctor onboard the airship R101 in 1930 together with a flying reptile named after a Prime Minister - never got to view the TARDIS for the first time on audio - by the time we heard her next she'd got used to the ship. So Howlcastle here wonderfully takes that idea and makes a lovely lengthy one-shot with her learning all about the TARDIS and its occupant. Suffice to say that if you haven't heard Storm Warning it might not appeal to you as much but for Charley fans like me it's a real treat!

Recced because:

This week I’m trying to rec mainly authors who haven’t been recced here before, but since this bit of crossover fun merges my two favorite SciFi fandoms it caught my eye.  The Doctors and companions are all spot-on, and so are Captain Janeway and her crew.  It’s always fun to see someone interacting with multiple Doctors, especially when it’s non-linear.

Recced because: Just knowing that this fic exists fills me with unholy glee. It's the sort of thing that I was hoping someone would write after last fall's Children In Need preview scene and I was so happy to find out that someone did. Every single one of the ten scenes that make up this fic is brilliant in its own way and every single character is drawn as if from life. The Sixth Doctor bit is especially hilarious. I also loved the Seventh Doctor bit for Benny's diary entries and the Third Doctor bit for containing one of my own personal ships. They're all good bits, however. Highly recommended for everyone.

Characters/Pairings: Six, Erimem, Peri, Frobisher, Iris, Mel, Evelyn, Charley (and Eight).
Warning: Spoilers for 'The Bride of Peladon'.

Recced because: It's a beautiful thing, built around a very simple prompt - Six gets Erimem a new cat. This he does, and there's clearly a great kinship between this Doctor and the cat (Five was not so fond of them) and that's great, but eve11 doesn't leave it at just that. Instead, Erimem lives out her life on the slow path and Six shows up with all his companions at various times in her life, and each meting shows us something different about Erimem, who is living her life very well without the Doctor - which is something else to be glad of. I must also admit that anything with Frobisher and/or Iris in it, and done well, is likely to bring me great joy. And this does - though, unlike anything else I've recced - it is somewhat bittersweet.

Recced because: This story was just breathtaking, from the beginning the excellent character voices ring absolutely true. It's end is somehow bittersweet and joyous and leaves you warm and aching. Recced because: First of all, amaresu is one of my favourite authors and I'm shocked none of her fics have been recced here. Five Times Charley, Mel, or Glitz Almost Died (But Didn't) is part of amaresu's Charley/Mel series, The Terrors and Triumphs of Space Piracy: A Girl's Own Paper. It's a pairing that I would never have put together but they work incredably well. Both Charley and Mel have had to toughen up so they arn't exactly the same as when they were in the series, but their changes are realistic. After spending so much time with Glitz, some of his personality is bound to rub off of Mel and Charley.

Story: Flashover
Author: VittoriaVetra
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 42318
Characters: Eight, Charley
Author's Summary:The science of fire is not one that is always understood. Fire behavior is strange sometimes, at best, downright frightening at its worst. The investigation of a rash of urban fires with bizarre circumstances requires the Doctor's unique abilities, but he and Charley soon learn that if you play with fire -- you almost always get burned.

Recced because: When the author starts each chapter with quotes from the NFPA 921 Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations, you know she knows her stuff. I love stories that take minor, somewhat strange events and throw major sci-fi twists at them, and that's just what VittoriaVetra does in Flashover. It's a story featuring Eight and Charley in present-day Chicago, and it wouldn't be out of place as one of the better Big Finish audios-- with the added bonus that they don't need to find actors that can do good American accents ;) VittoriaVetra has a swift narrative style. She populates the story with believable and well-rounded original characters in a backdrop that you can tell the author knows intimately. But she also does a marvelous job capturing the relationship between the Eighth Doctor and Charley. Plus there's danger, mystery, intrigue and aliens-- who could ask for more?

On the meta level, I love the way that it takes all the disparate strands of the Eighth Doctor's continuity (the audios, the books, the DWM comics and even the Radio Times strip) and bundles them up into a single coherent thread of narrative, while giving space to each of the companions in ways that make perfect sense (I particularly love Shayde's bit, and the use of the TARDIS is amazing).

Author's summary: Charley comes back to Earth. Cecilia Pollard reports. [Spoilers through "Neverland." Eight/Charley, but not excessively so.]
Characters/Pairings: Charley Pollard, Eighth Doctor, other characters
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is a lovely audio-based fic told by an engaging narrator. When Charley went off to travel with the Eighth Doctor, she left behind a family that included a younger sister, Cecilia (nicknamed "Sissy"). Six months after being presumed dead, Charley returns home alone. The story, related via Sissy's journal entries, briefly summarizes the time period between Charley's disappearance and return, then goes into more detail after she's back home. The author establishes an evocative, bittersweet tone that feels just right.

My one concern: Sissy appears in a Gallifrey audio, which Icepixie hadn't heard (neither have I!), so her characterization in this story might be very different. But if readers can get past that potential issue, or don't consider it a problem to begin with, I think they'll really enjoy Flowers in Summer.

Story: Three's a Crowd
Author: Gillian Taylor
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 7616
Charcters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Charlie Pollard (Spoilers for "Storm Warning")
Author's Summary: I love company, you know. I just don’t care for it when it decides you or your friends make a tasty meal.

recced because: I have a deep, deep love for the Eighth Doctor Audios (McGann was robbed, yo!) and this story captures the manic ramblings of Audio!Doctor perfectly. It's a story that fits neatly into audio canon and yet, even without knowing any backstory, is a complete story in and of its own. But mostly it's the Eighth Doctor being the Eighth Doctor and that's pretty amazing.

Author's summary: The Doctor has been dancing for a long time.
Characters/Pairings: Doctors One through Ten, also Barbara, Ian, Vicki, Ben, Polly, Benton, Romana I, Tegan, Turlough, Evelyn, Mel, Charley, C'rizz, Rose and Jack. (Apologies to the unfortunate person doing the tags...)
Warnings: None

Recced because:
Ten Doctors, thirteen companions and a hell of a lot of dancing (that's dancing, not 'dancing'). I really appreciated the fact that this went for some less usual Doctor-companion pairs - Benton, C'rizz, the Seven segment being about Mel instead of Ace. I loved this for the humour and the insight, but what pushed it into must-rec category was the last section, with Barbara dancing at her wedding with a strange man in a pin-stripe suit, bringing the dance right back to the beginning.
