Recced because: This was just written a few days ago, but I felt it needed a rec ASAP. If this were a physical book, I would not have been able to put it down. I waited with bated breath for each update on Teaspoon, and it was worth the patience!

Author's Summary: A TARDIS inside a TARDIS and an unexpected meeting.
Characters/Pairings: Romana I, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: General, Standalone, Vignette

Recced because: Okay, I have to admit - I have a weakness of Classic meets New. And ahhh, Romana I! Who doesn't love her? Smart, beautiful, reserved, intuitive and with that well hidden, sly humor that made the character so memorable! And Romana I meeting Eleven - close to, yet so very far from the Fourth 'her Doctor'. This was just one of those fictions that needed to happen. And it was written by a brilliant author that I look forward to seeing more from. Once again, gorgeous attention to detail, every nuance and line holding more than one meaning and everything just wonderfully, nostalgically gorgeous. A must read for all - Classic and New Who buffs alike (and a definite must for the ones that love both)!

With the importance of names being a hot topic on the show lately.. This seemed fitting.

Story: Your Name
Author: blaidddrwg
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 24,226
Author's Summary: Exploring the names chosen by the Doctor and the Master, as well as their original, or 'real' names.
Characters/Pairings: Romana I, Romana II, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (Academy era), The Master (Academy era), The Master (Other), The Master (Simm), The Rani (Academy era)
Warnings: I suppose there are some incesty-tones here, if you go with the theory that Koschei and Theta are brothers, but they are easily ignored if you choose to do so

Recced because: Throughout both classic and new Who the Doctor and the Master keep intriguing and making us guess about their original relationship. This fic explores the possibility that they may have been brothers (twins, in fact) and it strangely seems to fit. I don't think everyone will agree with this theory, but it's a nice framework for this fic and truly transforms the Koschei/Theta dynamics into two sides of the same medal.
The first few chapters give a really good feel, I think, of what they academy might have been like and the shenanigans the both of them might have gotten up to. More interesting is the tension that already starts to spiral out of control as both boys grow up and their relationship already begins to fracture. blaidddrwg focuses on the inner thoughts and telepathic life of the two main characters very well as well, really drawing the reader into the relationship and letting the audience get very close. This fic is definitely an interesting window into Time Lord psychology and shed a light on a possible angle of the Doctor's and the Master's history.
The last two chapters link all this prior, non-canon history to scenes from canon, completing the circle in a way. We readers read the academy chapters with our canon-based background and in the last two chapters we review this familiar canon within the framework blaidddrwg has given us in earlier chapters.

Even if you don't feel you can agree on the idea that the Doctor and the Master are brothers, I'd still advise you to read this fic if only because it offers so many interesting new angles to this set of characters who seem to be forever spiralling together - pulling and pushing at each other constantly.

Hello again! I'm [livejournal.com profile] merryghoul, back with a second round of fic recs. To get us started, how about a Romana-centric fic?

Story: through time time is conquered
Author: Brunhilde
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1945
Author's Summary: Their story has been foretold and they cannot escape Time. The Doctor and Romana through the ages, from beginning to end.
Characters/Pairings: Romana I, Romana II, Romana III, The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: No standard warnings apply.

Hello Calufrax! I'm [personal profile] dbskyler. Here are some more of my favorite stories from the Teaspoon, which I am very excited to rec to you!

Story: Gearbox (The Won't Miss a Piece Remix)
Author: neveralarch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6103
Author's Summary: “How does the TARDIS work?” asks Ace.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Seventh Doctor, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, First Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Herriot, Second Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Third Doctor, Romana II, Fourth Doctor, Erimem, Fifth Doctor, Melanie Bush, Sixth Doctor, Hex Schofield.
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a work of brilliance, and I really mean that. The structure of it -- interspersing scenes between the Seventh Doctor and Ace with scenes between earlier Doctors and their companions -- is very well done, and the writing is top-notch, but all of that is almost irrelevant once you come to realize the central conceit of the fic, which is truly a thing of marvelous beauty. If you don't know all the Doctors or companions involved, don't worry, because this is a fic where knowing the characters isn't important (I don't know them all either). All you really need to know about is the TARDIS -- and you might just pick up a new piece of fanon by the end.

And now the end is near, and so I face the final curtain...of this week's reccing on Calufrax, that is! It's been fun sharing some of my favourite stories again. I hope you've all found them as worth reading as I have, even the unsettling heavy-going ones. I thought I'd end the week with something a little lighter, however:

Story: Afternoon Matinee
Author: vvj5
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1,082
Author's Summary: The Doctor feels that Romana has some cultural lessons to learn.
Characters/Pairings: Romana I, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None
Recced because: Well, because it's a very funny, well-characterised look at two of my favourite Who characters of all time? That should be a good enough reason to be going on with, I should think. ;) Vvj5, aka [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook, is surely no stranger to the majority of you who frequent this comm and the Teaspoon site. This is yet another excellent entry from her, a rare foray into the field of Doctor/Romana fluff and very well done indeed, especially considering it isn't one of her main areas of fanfictional interest. This shows all of the author's usual deep Who knowledge and appreciation, attention to detail, restraint and good taste, insightful characterisation and genuinely funny humour. I hope she won't think I'm laying it on a bit thick when I say she is an example to all of us in the field of Whofic and genre fanfiction in general. I think the main reason I like this so much, though, is because it's Four and Romana going to the pictures together and managing to be as witty and argumentative about it as they are about most of the activities they engage in. You can imagine them doing this kind of thing all the time in between the on-screen stories. Good stuff. Go and read it and let the author know how much you like it (because I know you will). :)

Author's Summary: The moment most parents must dread.
Characters/Pairings: Jenny, K-9, Romana I, the Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Just a light-hearted bit of fun to end the week, in which Romana has to deal with one of a later Doctor's little problems.
[identity profile] janeturenne.livejournal.com
For my last rec of the week, a return to Gallifrey, and two very different takes on the same pairing from the same author: one dark with a hint of sweetness, one sweet with an edge of darkness, each an excellent take on Romana and Braxiatel and their centuries of twisted chemistry.

Story: Tutoring
Author: lizbee
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1097
Author’s Summary: Braxiatel has a special interest in Romana.
Pairing: Romana/Braxiatel
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Let’s put this as simply as possible: there isn’t a lot of het sex written in Classic Who, and this is almost certainly the hottest I’ve ever read. It’s more than a PWP, in that there’s some leadup and a great deal of atmosphere, but the sex is definitely the focus, and it’s very, very well done. The issue of Romana and Brax’s age difference is touched on (it’s set during Romana’s time at the Academy) but isn’t allowed to dominate, and it ends on just the right bittersweet note.

Excerpt: )

Story: Needs Must
Author: lizbee
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 644
Author’s Summary: Romana and Braxiatel have some unfinished business. Post-"Panacea".
Pairing: Romana/Braxiatel
Warnings: None
Recced because:

My personal headcanon on Braxiatel and his hopeless pash for Romana largely involves him being unwilling to admit to himself how much the woman who is his President isn’t the same girl he fell in love with all those years ago. This fic plays on that idea very effectively, with an additional note of him being just as ensorcelled (though differently) with the older and wiser version. Add to that a Romana who clearly has been shaped by her many experiences--as traveler, President, and captive of the Daleks--and the result is a fic that crams an enormous amount of complexity and depth into a very short word count, with a chilling ending that will stick with you long after the story ends.

*waves* Hello all! I’m Jane, and I’ll be your reccer this week. I’ve never met a corner of the Whoniverse I didn’t like, and this week’s recs will include stories set during Classic Who, New Who, and in the Big Finish Audio ‘verse. I’m particularly fascinated by the Time Lords as a species, so every rec this week will include at least one Time Lord or Time Lady other than the Doctor (though he’s in plenty of them too).

This first rec is set in the Gallifrey audio ‘verse. Let me just take a moment here to say to those who have not heard Gallifrey: Look at your life. Look at your choices. And then go forth immediately and listen, for lo, it is amazing.

Story: On Her Lady President’s Secret Service
Author: neveralarch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 13025
Author’s Summary: Narvin and Leela tracking down spies in the Citadel. And also fighting with people. And fighting with each other. And having discussions about CIA training methods. But they also track down spies.
Characters: Irving Braxiatel, Leela, Narvin, Other Character(s), Romana II, K-9 Mark I
Warnings: Explicit Violence
Recced because:

I’ll admit from the top that I am wildly biased where this story is concerned, because it’s got tons of Narvin in it, and Narvin is quite possibly my favorite character in the whole of the Whoniverse. But I think anybody who’s at all familiar with the Gallifrey audios is bound to enjoy this story just as much as I do, because it’s a solid piece of writing in every possible way: excellently plotted, perfectly characterized, with all the wit and dry humor that are so characteristic of the show itself. In addition, this fic is unusual for being set during Gallifrey’s first season, so not only does it have the ‘Torvald’ plotline to play with, it also serves as an excellent antidote to the shifting paradigms of season four, grounded back on the Gallifrey we knew, before wars, plagues or alternate universes. If I had to pick one single candidate for the classic Gallifrey fic, it would be On Her Lady President’s Secret Service.

Story: There Can Be Only One
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: ~1400
Author's Summary: Five times in the life of Jamie McCrimmon when he became immortal and never left the Doctor. As you do
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot, Liz Shaw, Fourth Doctor, White Guardian, Romana I, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: Not actually a crossover. No heads are lost in the course of this fic.

Recced because: It's light and silly and very fun and quite clever. Zoe ends up looking into the heart of the TARDIS and accidentally makes Jamie unable to stay dead. So of course he gets to stay with the Doctor for the rest of his (un)natural life as an immortal highlander. Er. Not that kind of highlander. Really.

Jamie folded his arms, determined to stand his ground, even though he was, in fact, sitting up in bed. “I saw it in one of those talking pictures. He had to keep chopping off people’s heads.”

Story: Lights and Cheer
Author: leamichelle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2,301
Author's Summary: In the Vortex, one loses a sense of when and where. It's fitting that the Doctor decides for all.
Characters/Pairings: Four/Romana I, K-9
Warnings: None

Recced because: Okay, I'm a good two months late for Christmas fic, and I don't even celebrate the holiday myself, but I am still going to rec this irresistible Four/Romana I Christmas fluff because it is just that charming. We've all seen the "Doctor and companion celebrate Holiday X" trope before, but rarely is it this entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny. Four's holiday observance starts with a strand of multicolored lights, moves on to spiked eggnog, and (unsurprisingly) becomes progressively sillier not long afterwards.

Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Jamie McCrimmon, Romana (I & II), Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 10th), the Master, the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: This story takes us through seven vignettes depicting a few of the Doctor's important relationships. At a first glance it looks deceptively simple, but scratch the surface and you realise it actually hides quite a lot of insight. Together, the seven snippets form a whole that somehow manages to make me smile and break my heart a little at the same time.

Title: Gallifreyan Elks.
Author: sarlania.
Characters/Pairings: 4th Doctor, Romana I.
Rating: All ages.
Warnings: None.
Word Count: 930.
Summary: The Doctor and Romana discuss fashion.

Recced Because: The banter between the 4th Doctor and Romana comes across in a way that is very in keeping with their on-screen dynamic: witty, intelligent and just a little disturbing. When done right, seeing these two Gallifreyans interact gives the impression that they know what in their personalities is truly ridiculous and what would only seem so to non-Gallifreyans. This is what happens in this little story. It has a crack element too; the inspiration seems to be why the 4th Doctor's boots turn into shoes when he regenerates.

Word Count: 1,548
Author's Summary:
In a universe where there never was a Doctor, there is a Time Lord without a name.

Characters/Pairings: The Master, Romana I, Borusa, The Rani, Braxiatel

Recced because: I find this a fascinating look at what might have been.  This explores what the Master’s life would have been like without the Doctor’s influence.  By “conventional” standards it was better, but he seems to feel in his soul that he was never meant to be conventional.  Holmes and Moriarty, good and evil, yin and yang . . . nature abhors a vacuum.  Is life really better if you always feel incomplete?

Author's Summary: Set at the end of Armageddon Factor. The Doctor holds in his hand the Key to Time. Will he use it?
Characters/Pairings: Four, Romana I
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is a sublimely clever fic that ties old and new school canon together beautifully in a remarkably short span. With the simple but brilliant idea that holding the Key to Time, once assembled, gives the Doctor the ability to see the future (or possible futures, as there are hints at the various branches of non-telly canon), making his choice about whether to use the Key's power much more poignant in a way that resonates wonderfully with Romana's future (her departure in particular) and key new school moments like the confrontation with the Emperor in Parting and the Skasis Paradigm scene in School Reunion. A fantastic achievement.

Author: LizBee
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1293
Author's Summary: The Gallifreyan Karma Sutra is a very short book.
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor, Romana I

Recced because: Because, if I am to be terribly honest with myself, I prefer the first Romana over her second incarnation (mind you, it's a terribly close race). And good Romana I fic is hard to find. Thankfully this fic exists.

And there is not only great Romana I characterization... there is also excellent Four/Romana snark and probably some of the best Four/K9 banter I've ever read.

Disappointingly however, there is actually very little sex involved.

Characters/Pairings: Four, The Brig, Harry, Sarah Jane, Leela, Romana I, Romana II, K-9
Warnings: None

It's not too hard to scratch the surface with Four (teeth & curls, scarf, jelly baby, hello!), but he's always seemed to be one of the more difficult Doctors to get beneath the surface with.

This story not only goes deep, but also provides a lovely illumination of Four: his fears, his hopes, his motivations, and his interactions with his friends and companions. Excerpt: He’s trying to work it out in his head, the order in which it all happened. First for her, not him. He knows how it all played out for him. Knows far too well. Can’t forget the goodbyes. Author's Summary: Unscrupulous temporal engineers and a major breach in the laws of time lead Rose Tyler and the first Romana to join forces to rescue the Doctor. Both of him.
Characters/Pairings: Romana I, Rose, Four, Ten
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a delightful character study – sure, there's a plot about rescuing the Doctor before he accidentally gets erased from time, but it's completely secondary to the interactions between Rose and Romana. Romana is her usual clever and competent self, but still needs Rose's human ingenuity to save them from a scrape or two on their way to locating their wayward traveling companions. The dialogue sparkles – [livejournal.com profile] lizbee always does a beautiful job writing Romana – and as I commented on her journal when she posted this, this story made me miss Romana I.

Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a story about a Time Lord travelling the universe in their TARDIS picking up human women. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Only it's not the Doctor it's Romana. Livii's Romana is fun, very Time Lord-y (yes, that's a word) and just great to read. Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Martha, Rose, Romana I, Romana II, Seventh Doctor, Jamie, Susan, Ninth Doctor, The Bad Wolf, The TARDIS
Warnings: none, really, except some second person in the dream sequences

Recced because: This fic has it all: funny bits, serious bits, spooky bits, and poignant bits. It's about Martha and the TARDIS trying to get her to fix something that's gone wrong within it, but it's also about fairy tales. It's about the big bad wolf. It's about the ghosts in the machine.

It's wonderfully atmospheric and beautifully written. There's a real love for canon informing every word. Maybe the best way to express how good this fic is would be to let LizBee's words speak from themselves: Short excerpt. )

Author's summary: Is it luck or destiny that the past might repeat itself? Rose's past adventures with the Doctor seem to be replaying themselves in her new Universe. The Autons. The Slitheen. The Gelth. These events seem to be leading up to something, something big. But all Rose has are questions. Why has her past become her future? Why can't she get rid of that pesky phrase 'Bad Wolf'? And who is that man in the cream cricket suit stalking her? And just how does the Tenth Doctor's quest for the Key to Time fit in to all this?
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness/The Doctor (10th), Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Romana I, Romana II, Rose Tyler/The Doctor (5th and 10th), The Black Guardian, The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (5th), The White Guardian.
Warnings: Swearing,  AU

Recced Because: It's an wonderfully weaved story, despite the changes to the original Key to Time story arc to fit into the Bad Wolf story arc. Normally, a story that involves rewrites, aren't well done, but this one really is - in essence keeping to the original concepts, the Author's Notes will keep you well informed of the changes as the story progresses. Also, one of the great things about this, is the wonderfully perceived characterizations of Martha; this was one of the many stories that was written before Series Three aired and the story shows Martha putting her knowledge to good use - with a highly hilarious exchanges between her, the 10th Doctor and Jack.

Story: Threads
Author: Vali
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: Romana finds that her tastes have begun to change.
Characters/Pairings: Romana I/Fourth Doctor, K9
Warnings: none that I can think of (unless you want me to warn for Classic Who)

Recced because: Of the two Romanas, Romana I definitely gets the less play in fandom. Is this because Romana's first incarnation was so standoffish? Less blond? Less overtly shippy with the Doctor? Probably the most likely explanation is that while fic with Romana II has her whole life ahead of her to play with, Romana I only really had the Key To Time Arc. Whatever the reason, it's rare to find well-written fic with Romana I in it and the fact that "Threads" is so very much more than just well-written makes this fic a joy to rec.

Vali takes Romana as we first meet her--a prissy young know-it-all straight from the Academy--and shows how she grows and changes over the course of the search for the Key To Time. It's a character study, but it's also a love story--or, rather, a falling-in-love story--between Romana and the Doctor. We see him through her eyes, nothing more than a crazy old vagabond at first and something altogether different at the end. There's also a good deal of commentary on Gallifreyan society, which sheds some light on why Romana might have chosen to regenerate at the start of S17.

In short, "Threads" is a real treat to read.

Story: Like Nobody's Watching
Author: Andraste
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: The Doctor has been dancing for a long time.
Characters/Pairings: Doctors One through Ten, also Barbara, Ian, Vicki, Ben, Polly, Benton, Romana I, Tegan, Turlough, Evelyn, Mel, Charley, C'rizz, Rose and Jack. (Apologies to the unfortunate person doing the tags...)
Warnings: None

Recced because:
Ten Doctors, thirteen companions and a hell of a lot of dancing (that's dancing, not 'dancing'). I really appreciated the fact that this went for some less usual Doctor-companion pairs - Benton, C'rizz, the Seven segment being about Mel instead of Ace. I loved this for the humour and the insight, but what pushed it into must-rec category was the last section, with Barbara dancing at her wedding with a strange man in a pin-stripe suit, bringing the dance right back to the beginning.

Author's Summary: A man is defined by his relationships as much as his actions. Thirteen 100-word drabbles, one for each Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Second Doctor, Third Doctor, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Sixth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Eighth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor, Eleventh Doctor, Twelth Doctor, Thirteenth Doctor, TARDIS, Jamie McCrimmon, Liz Shaw, Romana (I and II), Tegan Jovanka, Peri Brown, Jabe, Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Captain Jack

Recced because: "A man is defined by this relationships." Yep; couldn't agree more. Therefore, I subscribe to the belief that the Doctor is defined by his companions. This one will definitely be popular with fans of the comm [livejournal.com profile] loves_them_all, because this fic shows that he does. He really does.
