Story: Puella Magi Amelia Magica
Author: Melengro
Rating: Teen
Word Count: ~600
Author's Summary: When the Doctor does not show up and a young Amy makes a new friend, somebody has a very rotten deal to offer her. Crossover with 'Puella Magi Madoka Magica'.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Eleventh Doctor, Kyuubey (crossover character)
Warnings: Implied spoilers for up to episode 9 of Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Recced because: I won't lie. I dared Melengro to write this one. However, I regret NOTHING, because the fic he did write was absolutely perfect. I wasn't surprised, though. If there is one thing Melengro is good at, it's writing the most random of crossover fic in a way that perfectly honors both source materials.

What you need to know about Madoka Magica is this: all over the planet there exists magical girl warriors called "puella magi" who fight eldritch horrors known as "witches." They gain their power by making a contract with a cute little creature named Kyuubey who will grant them any wish they choose in exchange for fighting witches. There is, however, a catch to all this, one that Kyuubey never tells the girls.

In "Puella Magi Amelia Magica," a twelve-year-old Amelia wishes for the Raggedy Doctor to come back. But was that really such a good idea?

Story: Six-Five Special
Author: castrovalva9
Rating: Teen
Word Count: ~1100
Author's Summary: Five and Six meet for the first time, and the obvious occurs. Five/Six slash, non-graphic.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor/Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa
Warnings: n/a

Recced because: Ah, Doctor/Doctor slash. Is it incest? Is it masturbation? Does it really matter? Castrovalva9 confronts the subject the way it is meant to be confronted: with equal parts humor and sarcasm. This is definitely a fun fic.

The older Doctor scowled. "Ah, yes, everyone likes Eight. He's so innocent and likeable, and with his bad memory you can tell him anything and he believes it. Or do anything to him, and he always forgets it. Not that I would know anything about such reprehensible behaviour," he hastily added.

Story: There Can Be Only One
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: ~1400
Author's Summary: Five times in the life of Jamie McCrimmon when he became immortal and never left the Doctor. As you do
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot, Liz Shaw, Fourth Doctor, White Guardian, Romana I, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: Not actually a crossover. No heads are lost in the course of this fic.

Recced because: It's light and silly and very fun and quite clever. Zoe ends up looking into the heart of the TARDIS and accidentally makes Jamie unable to stay dead. So of course he gets to stay with the Doctor for the rest of his (un)natural life as an immortal highlander. Er. Not that kind of highlander. Really.

Jamie folded his arms, determined to stand his ground, even though he was, in fact, sitting up in bed. “I saw it in one of those talking pictures. He had to keep chopping off people’s heads.”

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: ~1550
Author's Summary: Rose braves the unknown, leaping across dimensions, only to find she's got the wrong Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor/Rose Tyler
Warnings: Spoilers for Journey's End

Recced because: For reasons I don't quite understand myself, I adore reading about the Sixth Doctor with his other incarnations' companions. I blame Big Finish, actually. Their Six 'n' Charley miniseries was probably what gave me the taste for it. Anyway, in this story (which is framed as a missing scene from the S4 finale), Rose ends up running into the Sixth Doctor in her search for the Tenth and immediately assumes he's regenerated again. Misunderstanding ensues, as does snogging. The resulting fic is amusing and well-characterized.

Author: dbskyler
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: about 1000
Author's Summary: Some days, the Doctor doesn't answer his phone
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Martha Jones
Warnings: Offstage character death

Recced because: A bunch of Sarah Jane tribute fics were written when Liz Sladen died earlier this year. This one is my favorite. The fic itself is quiet and low-key, but it's very affecting for all that. Maybe even because it's so quiet and simple. (Also, DBSkyler writes a very good Rory.)

Story: Relatives and Relativity
Author: Yatzee
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 18263
Author's summary: In the aftermath of the Time Wars, the newly regenerated Ninth Doctor crashes down in Regency-era England -- where he meets the sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, for a crossover with Jane Austen's "Sense & Sensibility."
Characters/Pairings: Elinor Dashwood, Marianne Dashwood, Ninth Doctor, Mrs Dashwood, Margaret Dashwood, Mrs Jennings, Sir John Middleton, Willoughby, Miss Grey
Warnings: Spoilers up to chapter forty-seven of Sense & Sensibility.

Recced because: One of my other fandoms is Jane Austen novels, so I was really excited when Yatzee first wrote this, especially since I was reading S&S when it first got posted. I've meant to rec this one for a while, actually, but life got in the way and I didn't end up using my full quota of recs last time.

Anyhow, I'm extremely surprised no one beat me to this, because this is an amazing fic. Characterization, both of the Doctor and the Dashwoods, is spot-on and the prose has a very Regency sort of rhythm to it. Quite frankly, I love it to bits and can think of no better story to end Crossover Week with.

In a far steadier voice than she would have thought possible for such a sentence, Elinor continued, “You are a sort of … scientist-traveller from another world and era, using a living vehicle that is larger on the inside to move great distances or over centuries.”

The Doctor grinned. “Nicely done! As many times as I’ve had to explain, I don’t think I’ve ever made so neat a job of it.”

The sisters’ eyes met, as each sought confirmation of the other’s belief. Marianne brightened as she saw that she would not need to convince Elinor further. “How delightful!” Marianne said. “That seems somehow inadequate to the moment, but I know not what else to say.”

“Delight’s rather nice, actually,” the Doctor said. “I’ll take it.”

Elinor turned these revelations over in her mind once more. What they had learned here — it was not a fancy, not a delusion. Not was it simple, plain fact, to be fitted into the ordinary course of life. It was both logic and illogic, fantasy and science, the merging of her reason and Marianne’s sensibilities. For once, neither of them was wrong; both of them had been completely right, even though their beliefs had been exact opposites!

She laughed aloud. Marianne raised her eyebrows, and even the Doctor seemed to be surprised. Elinor covered her mouth with her hand, but she knew her glee to be ill-concealed. “Delightful,” she said. “Yes.”

So yeah. It's the story of how the Doctor got his groove back and how the Dashwood sisters got to have a most excellent adventure. Jane, I think, would have approved.

Author's summary: Zoe couldn’t continue to wander around the bridge in that catsuit. It was Kirk's job – his duty, even – to get her out of it.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe Heriot/James T Kirk, Spock
Warnings: Star Trek XI crossover

Recced because: This fic is my fault and I will freely admit it. After Star Trek XI came out, I commented in my lj that it would be awesome if Zoe/Kirk fic were to exist and [livejournal.com profile] atraphoenix took the idea and ran with it. Which I will be be forever grateful for, because this fic exceeds my wildest expectations. It's exceedingly fun to read. Kirk is so very Kirk and Zoe so very Zoe and I challenge anyone to not grin at the thought of Zoe on the Enterprise in science division blues.

Today's rec is a very special kind of crossover called a "fusion." Normal crossovers are when two canons meet. Fusions are when they synthesize.

I suppose the easiest way to describe the difference between a normal crossover and a fusion is using the colors blue and yellow. A crossover is a pattern: something simple like blue polka dots on a yellow background or something complicated like paisley. A fusion is the color green.

Story: The Grandparent Trap
Author: aralias
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5108
Author's summary: Early into her stay on Dalek war-torn Earth, Susan meets a girl who looks exactly like her. (Doctor/Master)
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor/The Master, Susan Foreman, Sharon, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Vicki
Warnings: Spoilers for The Dalek Invasion of Earth as well as The Parent Trap, sort of. Needless to say, the plot goes a bit AU.

Recced because: This is the story of how Susan meets her long-lost identical twin Sharon and how they fix up the Doctor and the Master's mess with togetherness. It is my absolute favorite Doctor/Master fic in the world. Which, I suppose, isn't surprising, because it steals its plot shamelessly from one of my favorite movies as a child: The Parent Trap. By which I mean the original sixties version that used to play on the Disney Channel, with Hayley Mills (and Hayley Mills!), not the Lindsey Lohan remake which didn't even exist until I was in high school. (Speaking of Lohan remakes, the original Freaky Friday with Jodie Foster is also way better, although the book is best of all.)

ANYWAY, I am utterly impressed as a fic, both on its own merits (the writing quality is top-notch) and by its merits as a fusion. Every time I reread it I notice new echoes of the original Parent Trap movie. I just love this fic so very, very much and I hope you all will love it too.

“I’m a Time Lady,” the other girl said, which was also a very silly thing to say on Dalek-infested Earth, where the lords and ladies of time were not exactly welcome dinner guests.

“So am I!” Susan said, which was also- well, you get the idea.

“Maybe you’re one of the people I was supposed to be keeping an eye on,” the other girl said, frowning. “But I think grandpapa would have mentioned you looking exactly like me.”

“Exactly,” Susan agreed, “except for the hair.” Her own short hair had proved both fashionable (in the 1960s) and practical, but she couldn’t help envying the other girl’s long braid.

Story: Ramona and the Blue Box
Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 8837
Author's summary: The Doctor finds himself in for an interesting afternoon when he and Romana land on Klickitat Street. Or was it Ramona? Crossover with the classic Beverly Cleary series.
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor, Romana II, Henry Huggins, Ribsy, Ramona Quimby, Beezus Quimby, K9
Warnings: Crossover with Beverly Cleary's Ramona books

Recced because: I have no idea if Beverly Cleary's books ever made it across the pond, but here in the US they've become a cultural institution. Generations of children have grown up reading about Ramona Quimby, her sister Beezus, Henry Huggins, his dog Ribsy, and the rest of the various inhabitants of Klickitat Street. So it's really not surprising that I squee'd out loud when I found this fic: Doctor Who and Beverly Cleary really are two great tastes that go well together. And Primsong blends them together with such skill that you'd have thought Ms Cleary herself stepped in to pen an serial.

Oddly enough, though the fic's really about Ramona (and Romana, who unfortunately gets left behind on Klickitat street by mistake), as far as Cleary canon goes it actually takes place during the Henry Huggins books. Instead of the misunderstood school-age Ramona of the Ramona books, we instead have the bratty little kid of Cleary's early stuff lost inside the TARDIS. Which makes it all the more fun, because there's nothing like little Ramona for causing trouble. As you will see.

It's Crossover Week at Calufrax!

Story: Brief Encounter
Author: Selena
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 553
Author's summary: The Doctor intervenes in the Earth/Minbari war. Crossover with Babylon 5.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Delenn
Warnings: Spoilers for parts of the backstory of Babylon Five. Takes place during In The Beginning.

Recced because: This fic goes to show that you don't need tens of thousands of words for an effective crossover. Sometimes you can do it in five-hundred. Selena's Seven voice is pitch-perfect--I could hear him speak his dialogue--and her Delenn is even better, if that's possible. Both pacing and mood are very well sustained. Everything fits seamlessly. You can feel the affection for both shows between every line.

She asked him whether he was a spy. "Not really," he said. "Though I could tell you about Earth. All about Earth, in fact, which you might want to know. Given that you're about to destroy the planet. Rather a pity; they make excellent tea, and no one has ever rivalled their umbrellas, either."
[identity profile] biichan.livejournal.com
Hello! It's good to be reccing again. After noticing that three of the fics I was hoping to rec this week were crossovers and/or fusions, I decided I would do a Crossover Week here at Calufrax.

Story: Electric Blue
Author: Philomytha
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 8222
Author's summary: Crossover with Bujold's Vorkosigan series. Amy had asked to visit a planet with lots of horses. She hadn't asked to get mixed up in Emperor Gregor's problems.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond/Rory Williams, Eleventh Doctor, Miles Vorkosigan, Ivan Vorpatril, Simon Illyan, Alys Vorpatril, Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan, River Song, Gregor Vorbarra
Warnings: Crossover with Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan saga. (Take place between The Warrior's Apprentice and The Vor Game.)

Recced because: First of all, a confession: I am a repeat offender when it comes to bugging writers to post to Teaspoon in order to rec them later in Calufrax. However, I feel no guilt for this. Some fics are so awesome they need to be shared with the whole wide world and since Calufrax is where I rec things to Teaspoon they must go.

Beyond this, I spent most of August having my brain eaten by the Vorkosigan Saga. It wasn't something I planned on, since I'd tried reading them once before and had stalled about ten pages in to the first book with Miles. But [livejournal.com profile] midnightlurker got me to promise to try the very first Vorkosigan book, which is about Mile's mother and that one hooked me good and proper. So as a new convert of course I went out looking for fanfic.

And found this one, which combines my shiny new fandom and my one true fandom very nicely. Characterization is impeccable on all levels and the plot is nothing if not engrossing. Also, it has what I like to think of as the hallmark of a really good crossover: the ability to be read by someone who only knows one of the fandoms concerned and still be an enjoyable fic. Of course, if you are familiar with both Who and Bujold then the enjoyment is trebled. I mean, the Doctor faces off against Simon Illyan at the height of his powers! If you don't know how awesome a thing that is, then trust me: it's awesome.
[identity profile] biichan.livejournal.com
So Primsong has already done her first rec, but since it's still Sunday in my time zone, I figured I'd do my last. And since Remix Redux just opened their archives today, I thought I'd rec a remix done two years ago (which is coincidentally the first time I participated.)

Story: Superb (The Sex-O-Matic Venus Freak remix)
Author: LizBee
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1913
Author's summary: Romana has improved on the Doctor's technique by quite a bit.
Characters/Pairings: Romana/Strella/Reinhardt, Romana/Mel, Romana/Tosh, Romana/Harry, Romana/Simm!Master, Romana/Lucy, Romana/Sarah Jane, Romana/Martha, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: no actual on-screen sex (though there's plenty of implying)

Recced because: It's silly, naughty, and just plain fun, not mention pretty darn funny as well. I especially enjoyed the running gag about week-long Time Lady orgasms. (The story it remixes, Livii's she'll be superb is fun as well, but Magicallaw already recced it two years ago.)

Everything you ever heard about Time Lord sexuality, or the nonexistence thereof, is a lie.

Okay, historically it's true that Time Lords were a bit repressed. The grandeur and majesty of the heritage of Rassilon didn't exactly lend itself to elaborate scenes of debauchery. But these days, there are only a handful of Time Lords around, and it's safe to say the species is, as a whole, pretty damn sexy. If a skinny man in a suit offers you a ride in his phone box, you'd best pack your good knickers. If a dapper madman takes you out dancing, you should resign yourself to the inevitability of a night of passion and bad pop music. If a sweet-looking blonde gives you a flirtatious look over the rim of her cocktail glass--

But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Warnings: RPF

Recced because: Ah, fobwatching. Where would we be without you? Some of the greatest crack theories been inspired by this very plot device and while the whole fobwatch fic genre has started to get a wee bit cliché at this point, it is still capable of providing us with pure cracky brilliance. Such as this story, where Rahm Emmanuel is secretly Irving Braxiatel inna fobwatch and Daleks are attacking the White House.

I mean, hasn't everyone wanted to read a story where Barack Obama and Romana team up to fight Daleks?

Characters/Pairings: Ten/Rose, OCs
Warnings: consent issues, sort of

Recced because: It takes what looks like happily ever after fluffyfic and twists it into something subtly creepy and quite clever. I'm sure most of you who've been following Calufrax from the start know that I'm a sucker for Tenth Doctor horror fic, mostly because I really do find said Doctor to be creepy. So it's always nice to find fic that backs me up on this. What I especially like about Roach Patrol's fic, though, is that the Doctor doesn't even have to go all Oncoming Storm to freak me out. His creepiest moments happen while he's being nice.

Story: What Ho, You Dalek Chaps!
Author: JJPOR
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3683
Author's summary: “So, what you’re saying, Jeeves,” says I, “is that Daleks don’t believe in letting bygones be bygones.” “Indeed not, sir; the concept of forgiveness is as alien to them as are those of mercy, tolerance and light comic opera.” Jeeves & Wooster sort-of crossover.
Characters/Pairings: Author Created Doctor, Jeeves, Daleks
Warnings: Crossover/fusion with Jeeves & Wooster, kinda sorta.

Recced because: You do not want to know how many false starts I've had in the attempt to tell you why you should read this. Because all I can think of to say about it is that it is fucking awesome. Which it is. But just saying something is awesome isn't always the way to get someone to read a fic. I mean, everyone has different standards of awesome. There are probably people out there who hate Wodehouse. They wouldn't think this fic was awesome. (They would be wrong, but still.)

However, I am a person who likes Wodehouse. And as a person who likes Wodehouse, I really, really love this fic. It reads like JJPOR used mad science to re-animate P G Wodehouse and force him to write Doctor Who fanfiction. In short, it's fucking awesome.

"Well, it's a rum do, Jeeves, and no mistake,” I told him, feeling a little put out at this turn of events; Romana’s parties were always a jolly sort of wheeze, and Brax and Monsieur Le Maitre and some of the other survivors from the old alma mater were going to be there. No doubt, there’d be some thigh-slapping misunderstanding involving someone getting engaged to some horrifying harpy, and Jeeves would have to sort it all out for us. Instead, here was me, stuck to a planet that was about to explode, in the absolute armpit of the galaxy. I was starting to lose my innate good humour, I can tell you. “In fact,” I informed Jeeves, “never in all my puff have I heard of such frightful blackguardry. What have I ever done to these Dalek swine for them to arrange something like this?”

Story: Five Times Lord Braxiatel Had Occasion to Regret The Doctor’s Exile Very Deeply Indeed (And One Time He Wished The Doctor Would Just Sod Off Forever)
Author: x_los
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 8119
Author's summary: The Doctor is many things to many people, but to Irving Braxiatel he is the universe's most annoying little brother.
Characters/Pairings: Braxiatel, Susan, Delgado!Master, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Turlough, Ainley!Master, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn, Peri, Romana II, Leela, Eighth Doctor, Narvin
Warnings: spoilers for the Gallifrey audios in the final part

Recced because: It sucks to be the Doctor's older brother. It really, really sucks. And nobody knows that better than “Irving” Braxiatel. Luckily, nobody suffers quite as beautifully as Brax does, either, which is a good thing as this fic is pretty much as it says on a tin: an exercise in showing all the many ways that the Doctor has ruined Braxiatel's life. No, wait, let me rephrase that: all the many hilarious ways that the Doctor has ruined Braxiatel's life. Because this fic is one of the funniest I've read in a long while. And, oddly enough, it's one of the better character studies too.

The sound of a dematerialization made them all look towards the TARDIS–but she was showing no signs of immanent departure. Indeed her sturdy blue frame seemed to silently rebuke them for doubting her reliability. In the direction they’d all just turned from, someone coughed. In unison three heads swiveled back to the plant. A man in a human business suit hovered above the manzanita.

“You stop right there, Master, that plant is endangered!” Peri yelled, standing as if she planned to fight him off the bush.

“Peri,” the Doctor sighed, “not everyone who’s made unwise facial hair decisions and wants a chat with me is the Master. Sometimes it’s only Shakespeare, or, in this case, Irving Braxiatel.”

Story: Pond's Model
Author: Melengro
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 950
Author's summary: When Amy Pond tried to use art as therapy to help her cope with the monsters, it did not turn out as harmless as she had anticipated. References to and inspired by ‘Pickman’s Model’ by H.P. Lovecraft. Blink-and-you’ll-miss-it reference to Kara no Kyoukai by Nasu Kinoko (which many fans of Hinchcliffe-era or Moffat-penned Who might enjoy checking out).
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, Howard Phillip Lovecraft
Warnings: semi-RPF (ie there were no Famous Writer episodes this series, so Melengro wrote one for us)

Recced because: The closing shots of The Eleventh Hour were just begging for fic about Amy Pond as an artist. This one adresses that subject with a decidedly non-Euclidean flair, deftly combining both HP Lovecraft and Doctor Who in order to create a greater whole: a story that is alternately sweet and creepy.

Story: A School for Scandal?
Author: Azar
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1439
Author's summary: "Don't you remember, he said we'd give the Time Lords a shake-up they really needed?" Ace/Martha/Donna--VERY AU crack!fic.
Characters/Pairings: Martha/Donna/Ace, Romana, OC
Warnings: None I can think of.

Recced because: About a year and a half ago, the most awesome ficathon ever conceived in this fandom took place. It was called the Cliche Swap-a-thon and what it basically entailed was taking the cliched plotlines from various pairings and challenging people to write fic for other pairings using those plotlines. Which meant that suddenly the internet had Ten/Martha stopwatch porn, the TARDIS shipping Seven/Ace, and fic in which the Doctor reassures the Master he was never second best. Much fun and lulz were had by all.

As you may have guessed, Azar's "A School For Scandal?" was one of the fics written. It takes the "group sex and academy hijinx" cliche so beloved of Doctor/Master/Rani shipfics and instead applies it to Martha, Donna, and Ace. Well, if any of the Doctor's companions were to end up attending the Prydonian Academy, it would probably be those three. The resulting fic is cracky and hilarious. I was giggling all the way through it. It probably helped that the one original character from the beginning of the fic--an Academy master--is the perfect portrait of Time Lordly stuffiness and his octosyllabic name sounds wonderfully silly said out loud.

Martha looked at her with a raised eyebrow. "So which of us is going to graduate and go all megalomaniacal, then?"

"I dunno." Ace shrugged with a twinkle in her eye. "It might be a lark, being evil."

Donna shrugged too. "I'm up for it." She smirked at Martha. "And you're already the doctor of us anyway, so it's only fair."

Story: 1967, the Chestertons and all that
Author: catelfemma
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5287
Author's summary: 1967 was a lovely year for all sorts of reasons, and Captain Jack Harkness was pleasantly surprised to find two old friends of a Doctor he'd never known there as well.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness/Ian Chesterton, background Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton, Owen Harper, Ianto Jones, Toshiko Sato, "Algy"
Warnings: none that I can think of, really

Recced because: One of the things I love about this fandom is that you can pick the most random pairings--characters that never even meet onstage--and someone somewhere has written a fic about it (and chances are, it'll be good too.) In this case, the improbable pairing is Jack Harkness with Ian Chesterton and catelfemma makes it work. Of course, it probably helps that Ian and Barbara are swingers. They're married in the fic and although it's not the main pairing, what we see of their relationship is very sweet. The main pairing itself is equally endearing, with Ian's nervousness at being with a man for the first time being gently soothed by Jack. (It probably helps that despite technically being a Torchwood crossover, Jack's portrayal in the fic is more in line with his less emo Doctor Who characterization.) The build-up might be slow, but it's in no way boring.

Recced because: Just knowing that this fic exists fills me with unholy glee. It's the sort of thing that I was hoping someone would write after last fall's Children In Need preview scene and I was so happy to find out that someone did. Every single one of the ten scenes that make up this fic is brilliant in its own way and every single character is drawn as if from life. The Sixth Doctor bit is especially hilarious. I also loved the Seventh Doctor bit for Benny's diary entries and the Third Doctor bit for containing one of my own personal ships. They're all good bits, however. Highly recommended for everyone.

Warnings: Crossover with Firefly. Spoilers for Serenity.

Recced because: Evidently Firefly takes place in E-Space. I'm not surprised.

Seriously, though, this is a very well done crossover. The character voices for both canons are pitch perfect. Doctor Tam does a very good Fourth Doctor in particular. Also, the encounter itself was done in a very organic matter that fit neatly in with both canons. It's the kind of thing that happens to the Serenity crew all the time, but it's also the sort of thing that happens to the Doctor. The title fits: this is an ordinary day. For all of them.

Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Susan
Warnings: None

Recced because: There are a number of questions surrounding the secret origin of Susan Foreman: What happened to her parents? Why did she and the Doctor leave Gallifrey? And, perhaps most importantly, on a planet where people are named things like Braxiatel, Rassilon, and Romanadvoratrelundar, how did she end up with so human a name as Susan? This fic contains some of my favorite answers. Short but sweet, it manages to provide a logical and original origin story for Susan and contains a lot of concepts--such as the circumstances surrounding her birth--that I wish I'd come up with myself.

Recced because: This is an odd little story about an odd little man, with plot that doesn't immediately make sense when you first read it or indeed when you reread it, but I'm fond of it anyway because it does a very good job of encapsulating the basic essence of the Seventh Doctor: who the man is, if not necessarily why he does what he does.

Story: A Shift In Reality
Author: Kesomon
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5408
Author's summary: Since Farrinham, the Doctor's been restless. Splitting headaches, blackouts, and the same phantom memory, speaking the same unfinished request. Just what is going on? AU post Human Nature/The Family of Blood. No spoilers.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones, The Master (Author Created)
Warnings: None that aren't already in the author's summary.

Recced because: Despite the unusual nature of this AU, it somehow seems to be uncannily plausible. Kesomon does a very good job of maintaining the tense mood of the first half of the fic and I find the interaction between Martha and the Master in the second half to be absolutely compelling. And while I'm not exactly a Master/Martha shipper normally--it's the whole Year That Never Was thing--there's a sort of fascinating chemistry between them in this AU where the Utopia/Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords arc never happened.

Story: Something In The Hair
Author: RedScharlach
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 393
Author's summary: The Tenth and Eleventh Doctors mutually express their irresistible physical attraction to each other's most prominent attribute. Rampant double entendre results.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Eleventh Doctor (or, more properly, Tenth Doctor's Hair/Eleventh Doctor's Hair)
Warnings: Spoilers for the Eleventh Doctor's physical appearance.

Recced because: Some of the funniest and most creative works in this fandom have come about because of the kink meme. This is one of them. I'm so very glad that RedScharlach decided to post this on the Teaspoon under her own name.

"Then I've got a brilliant idea," said the Doctor. "You can pluck me all night long, and I'll pencil you in for next week..."

Story: One Track Mind
Author: Doctor Tam
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1698
Author's summary: The Doctor tells Rose his life story. Or something. “Twenty-nine!? Jeez, Mickey was right, you’re some sort of womanizer or something!”
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Rose
Warnings: Don't read while drinking fluids

Recced because: There exists a certain subgenre of New Who fanfiction in which the Ninth or Tenth Doctor explains his past unprompted to Rose (or Martha or Donna, but usually Rose for some reason), despite the fact that canonically he never seems to explain anything about himself without being bullied into it. (See: Martha Jones in Gridlock.) This is generally used as a way to create a greater emotional intimacy between the Doctor and his companion.

This fic takes that very subgenre and skewers it brilliantly. Oh yes, the Doctor confesses. He confesses it all and Rose isn't particularly reassured by anything she hears. But it's done with so much love and affection along with the snark that one can't help but grin.

“So, how many have there been?”

The Doctor sighs, devoutly glad that Mickey has gone off to find a room. His tendency to misinterpret Sarah Jane as an old girlfriend would be increasingly irritating in a conversation about all his friends. At least Rose understands that you can love someone without being in love with them. Hopefully. Actually, it’s possible that she’s fuzzy on the concept, and that’s what’s causing this trouble.

“Well? If you don’t want to answer–“

Oh, yeah, the question. The Doctor calculates in his head, running up against some problems: does he include the Brigadier? Do Katarina and Sara Kingdom count? What about K9 and Kamelion? Eventually he sorts it out: “29. I think. Roughly.”

Story: Light Bending Backwards
Author: Spastic_visions
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2070
Author's summary: The Doctor infiltrates the Time Agency. Jack suffers the consequences.
Characters/Pairings: Thirteenth Doctor, Jack Harkness, Twelfth Doctor, Rose, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: This story may mess with your head just a wee tiny bit.

Recced because: So the Thirteenth Doctor wakes up in a Time Agency cell and realizes he's regenerated into Jack Harkness. What follows is an original and compelling non-linear mindf-ck—and I say mindf-ck in the most complementary way possible. Spastic_vision's story takes a initial premise that some might call completely and utterly insane and follows it through with relentless logic to the very end. The twist in the final paragraph comes almost completely from left field, yet it's been foreshadowed all along. It's one of my favorite fics ever and I was very gratified to finally find where the author had posted it to Teaspoon.

Story: The Doctor's Rib
Author: Azar
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4549
Author's summary: Hope can come from unexpected places.
Characters/Pairings: Female!Eleventh Doctor/Ninth Doctor, Female!Eleventh Doctor/Rose/Jack
Warnings: Somewhat akin to babyfic. Kindasorta. Conceptionfic perhaps?

Recced because: Because it has my absolute favorite way of repopulating the Time Lord species that I have ever found in Whofic. And besides, it makes sense, somehow, that there'd be a clear biological reason for the Doctor to suddenly regenerate into a woman.

And, well, I have a rather large soft spot for the story in general, given that it was the first Doctor Who fanfic I ever read—dating back to the days when I was a casual viewer of a few random episodes and not yet a full-fledged fan of the show—as well as the one that introduced me to the whole girl!Doctor concept. It's all been jossed, of course, but I still feel like the story itself has held up rather well over the years.

(Oh, and if you're wondering about the whole mission statement above, I've decided to challenge myself this week to only rec people whom I've never recced in Calufrax before. I've been worrying lately that I'm falling into a bit of a rut, so this is a good way to snap out of it.)

Story: Gaze into the Abyss
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 22, 811
Author's summary: She wanted to make a difference; she wanted to do good. She wanted to be able to say that she had done something more with her life than simply watching. Most of all, she wanted to be like him, to please him. Events dictated otherwise.
Characters/Pairings: Various Doctors/Romana II, Leela/Andred, Davros, K9, Fourth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Eighth Doctor, Jacobi!Master, Daleks, and various assorted Time Lords
Warnings: Sad and long. Bring tissues. Also, explicit violence (but then it is a war story.)

Recced because: Tonight you get two Calufrax recs from me! I've already recced the short one; this is the long one. Believe me, it's worth every sentence.

Gazing Into the Abyss is, without a doubt, my favorite Time War fic. It's written from the perspective of Romana and through her JPOR does an excellent job of showing the horrors of war. We begin with Romana in all her youth and idealism, wanting to do good and finding the role of President as the perfect way to accomplish this and we end at the end of Gallifrey herself, the final hour. It's sad and heartbreaking, but the writing is beautiful and there were moments reading this where I forgot that it isn't actually canon. I cannot recommend this one more.

Story: Bigger on the Inside
Author: tangerine
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 130 (or 1130 if you count the picture)
Author's summary: This is not for you. (Crossover with House of Leaves)
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor, Nyssa, The TARDIS
Warnings: Crossover with House of Leaves. May leave cracks in your brain.

Recced because: Everyone has those fics where after reading one says to oneself. “This. This is canon.” Well, this is one of those fics for me. Right now I'm reading House of Leaves for the first time and I can say unto you with no hesitation that this fic is absolutely true to both halves of its source material and manages to blend them absolutely seamlessly. I'm very impressed.

Author's summary: The duplicate Doctor goes through a different sort of metacrisis.
Characters/Pairings: Duplicate!Tenth Doctor/Rose, Alt!Wilf
Warnings: Spoilers for Journey's End

Recced because: First of all, it's funny. The humor is extremely well done, flowing in a natural, effortless fashion. Believe me, that's a lot harder to do than it looks. More importantly, though, is that underneath the humor there are some real issues about gender and identity being explored. The Duplicate Doctor isn't just part-Doctor, after all, he's part-Donna too. And sometimes the Doctor parts and the Donna parts don't exactly mix.

The Doctor climbed back into bed, and wondered if there was an appropriate time to tell your universe-traversing girlfriend that you were maybe sort of a bit gay now. You were a strident red-haired woman in a skinny man's body. Or something. One thing about Donna, she'd been utterly certain of her heterosexuality, and the only clitoris she was interested in was her own.

Story: Imaginary
Author: Dune
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 712
Author's summary: Deep inside the Citadel, there is a lonely room, forever holding a lonely Time Lord.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor
Warnings: Spoilers for S4.

Recced because: Short but powerful, this fic takes a line from The Stolen Earth and follows its implications it to a conclusion that feels both natural and disturbing. In the author's note, Dune says she isn't sure if it's an AU to New Who or if it's set sometime after S4. In truth, the very ambiguity only adds to the story's strength. I feel like I'm damning with faint praise, but it's a very good, very thought-provoking fic and one I think everyone ought to read.

Story: Within the Realm of Possibility
Author: koshiroryuu
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1200
Author's summary: For every unexplained disappearance, there's always someone, somewhere, somewhen, who knows what really happened.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Peri, Prince Richard, Prince Edward, Tenth Doctor, Anastasia Romanov, Fourth Doctor/Stephen Fry, Uemura Naomi, Second Doctor, Jamie, Humphrey, Virginia Dare
Warnings: tastefully hints at fictional person/real person type slash (F/RPS?)

Recced because: In this series of six double drabbles, we have six mysterious disappearances from real life explained through Doctor Who. It's a fascinating concept and one I'm surprised we don't see more often in fanfic. Koshiroryuu's character voices are spot on as always and her mastery of the strict two-hundred-word format is precise and enviable.

Story: Most Likely Kill You In The Morning
Author: hotelmontana
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5514
Author's summary: Rose decides that, if it’s the clothes that make the man, she’ll try on a pinstriped suit.
Characters/Pairings: Rose, Mickey, Tenth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Jackie Tyler, Romana II
Warnings: Goes AU from The Girl In The Fireplace.

Recced because: It's not unusual to find AU fic where the alternate universe in question branches off by having the Doctor never find his way back from 18th century France at the end of The Girl In The Fireplace. In fact, there have been at least two other AU fic with the same initial premise already recced in Calufrax (and I should know given that I was the reccer for one of them.) All things considered, it's quite likely that some of you are asking why I would decide to rec another fic with the same beginning. The answer is quite simple: because it's different from both the previous recs and it's good. Well-written and nicely plotted and just plain good. If you only read one rec from me this week, read this one.

Rose and Mickey eventually find their way back to the twentieth century, but the Doctor's not waiting for them when they get there. In fact, he doesn't seem to be anywhere in time and space at all, no matter how hard Rose looks and it's only at the end that she finds the Doctor, only the Doctor isn't what she expected and neither is Rose herself anymore.

Story: Stray Birds of Summer
Author: livii
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1781
Author's summary: "The Doctor, despite how he shows off, can’t do quite everything, you know." The TARDIS is hiding some secrets.
Characters/Pairings: Martha/Rose
Warnings: Sureality. Lovely, lovely sureality.

Recced because: Crazy, surreal, beautiful femmeslash where Martha wanders into an unfamiliar part of the TARDIS and meets one of the ghosts in the machine. The prose is very dreamlike and it might all be a dream after all or a dream of a memory—and if someone is dreaming it, who is? The Doctor? The TARDIS? Martha? There's no definite answer to any of it, just a bit of birdsong, and that's all the better. I've only recently discovered this fic but I already know it'll be one I'll be coming back to again and again.

Story: A King is a King
Author: Sheila Adamson
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2565
Author's summary: The Jacobites: Wrong but Wromantic? An old-fashioned historical.
Characters/Pairings: Jamie, Victoria, Second Doctor
Warnings: None. You can't have spoilers for history!

Recced because: Not only is this an excellent example of a straight-up historical fic, but it's also a wonderful character study of Jamie. The Doctor, Victoria, and Jamie land in the town of Dumfries twenty years or so after the Jacobite rebellion and Jamie finds out that he's not the only one still bearing a grudge from those days. It comes complete with lovely little historical details too. Go read it.

Story: Concatenation
Author: Minion
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 850
Author's summary: A few years after the events of Doomsday, Rose meets the First Doctor. Well, why do you think the Doctor has generally traveled with young women over the years?
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor/Rose
Warnings: Pokes fun at both characters but in a loving way. Really.

Recced because: I think I said in my rec yesterday that I'm usually not all that into Doctor/Rose ships. Well, I may have been fudging the truth just a tiny little bit because there is one Doctor/Rose ship that I ship quite hard and that is First Doctor/Rose, known far and wide by its portmanteau ship name Onose (which is of course pronounced like O NOES—we Onose shippers tend to be silly sorts sometimes.) Sadly there doesn't seem to be very many Onose fics that have been written, but the upside is that they all seem to be quite good. Concatenation especially always brings a smile to my face. It's very silly and light-hearted and there are days when you just need something like that.

Story: Rewrite
Author: FyrDrakken
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 5459
Author's summary: You only get one chance to be in one time and place. Only one chance to alter the course of events before you have to let them go. But he knows the way to cheat, too. History is really just recorded memory. And memories can be altered. Erased. Even rewritten.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Rose, Nine/Rose, Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: Time Lord memory tampering.

Recced because: It's deliciously creepy in a very low-key way. The Doctor only wants to make his first time with Rose Tyler something worth remembering, but he's going about it the entirely wrong way and in the back of his mind he might even realize it. I'm not usually all that into Doctor/Rose or Doctor/Jack/Rose fics at all, but I keep coming back to this one. Go read it.

Story: Burning Ground
Author: Bagheera
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2389
Author's summary: The Doctor and the Master play gods in Vedic India.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/Delgado!Master, Fourth Doctor/Delgado!Master, Fifth Doctor
Warnings: Goes AU somewhere near the end of the Third Doctor's tenure.

Recced because: It's good. It's very, very good. Which is probably damning with faint praise, but I've been staring at the computer screen for the past half-hour trying to figure out how to describe why I love this fic so much and that's really all it boils down to: it's very, very good. There's a relentless dream-like logic to Bagheera's prose and her alternate Fourth and Fifth Doctors are so very familiar despite the fantastic setting we find them in. It's perhaps my favorite Doctor/Master fic of all and I'm so very glad she wrote it.

Story: The Mascot
Author: Darkerchild
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1304
Author's summary: A compelling story about the love which exists between man and stuffed panda.
Characters/Pairings: Steven Taylor/Hi-Fi
Warnings: Spoilers for The Chase (if you can still call something spoilers after forty years.) Implied sexual relations with an inanimate object.

Recced because: Despite the cracked-out premise (for which you may blame the kinkmeme), this is easily one of the best stories I've read in recent months. It's rare to find fic featuring Steven in the first place—to find it and have it be fic of such imagination and quality is an unexpected pleasure. Darkerchild's fic excels both as character study and in worldbuilding: her version of Earth a hundred years after The Dalek Invasion of Earth is all too real in its dysfunctionality. Steven's experiences under Mechanoid captivity and his descent into madness are similarly well-portrayed. This is an excellent, imaginative fic and I can't recommend it enough.

It's the epic saga of the love between a man and his stuffed panda. How can you not love something like that?
