Story: Dead Worlds
Author: Branwyn
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1057
Author's Summary: Lucy Saxon lives in the TARDIS now, and finds that one mad alien is much like another.
Characters/Pairings: Lucy Saxon, the Doctor, references to the Master.
Warnings: darkfic

Recced because: Dead Worlds is a creepy, creepy, creepy look at the Doctor's darker side, which canon often seems to only glance at in flashes and then forget as quickly as possible. But the Doctor isn't human, and he isn't particularly sane, either, and this fic lingers over that in a very haunting way.

Story: Anthropomorphic
Author: the_tenzo
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 1,520
Author's Summary: Rory Williams knows there is a ghost on the TARDIS.
Characters/Pairings: Rory/Amy, Eleven, mention of past Doctor/Rose
Warnings: none

Recced because: Who doesn't like a bittersweet ghost story? It's short and pitch-perfect: Rory's still finding his sea legs, so to speak, and this fic perfectly encapsulates just how creepy the TARDIS would be when you're not sure of your welcome. Add in a nostalgic nod to a chapter of the Doctor's life that's over (or is it?) and you've got yourself a wonderful little read.

Story: Mad Girl's Love Song
Author: Poetry (or Joking on LJ)
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 8,942
Author's Summary:
Once upon a time, there was a girl who dreamed of adventure - until one day a woman in a leather jacket took her by the hand and told her to run.
Characters/Pairings: Female!Nine, Rose, Jack, Male!Ten.
Warnings: 2,660

Recced because: One of the best things about Halloween is ladies with a rock-solid excuse to be sexy as hell. One of the worst things about Halloween is ladies sacrificing their personal integrity to conform to arbitrary standards of beauty for the conditional approval of a heteronormative male-dominated society. Poetry's Mad Girl's Love song is all about the former and gives a big, joyous brush-off to the latter: she writes a female Ninth Doctor who's gorgeous and strong and hurting and healing, and a Rose who finds out that love can be lots of different things, and a Jack who is every bit as flexible as a 51st century guy should be. To top it all off, Poetry even gives the Doctor a genderswap within the genderswap fic, and writes her regenerating into a male Ten. It's a funny and silly and thoughtful romp through a Rule 63'd Season One, and it's worth every minute you spend reading it.

Story: Sleep
Author: Sigyn
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2,844
Author's Summary:
Owen is forced to drag a sodden and semi-conscious Toshiko home. What do you do with a beautiful, willing and emotionally vulnerable woman when you are already dead? Takes place after an unspecified horrific event, just before the events in Fragments and Exit Wounds.
Characters/Pairings: Owen, Tosh
Warnings: 2,660

Recced because:  What could be more seasonally appropriate that zombies? Zombies, and the ladies who love them? This is short, sad, sweet, and very plausible. I've always had a soft spot for Tosh and Owen's doomed romance, and this fic really cuts to the heart of the pairing and offers a quiet moment of grace.

The Bridge

Hello everyone! Since I get to rec from now until All Hallow's, I've decided to honor the spirit of the season-- mua ha ha-- and go with dark, scary, creepy, and/or strange fics. Hopefully a bit of each!

So I hope you enjoy... Tales from the Teaspoon Crypt.

Story: The Bridge
Author: Scythe The Wicked
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2,844
Author's Summary: In a small town in modern day Mississippi, a local teenager recalls the horrid story of a lynching in the Depression Era South and the terrible miracle and tragedy that followed.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Martha Jones.
Warnings: Explicit violence and death.

Recced because: this is a completely brutal fic, and it reads like a blow to the gut. It' short, it's stark, it's superbly written, and it pulls no punches: not about death, not about bigotry, not about the very real dangers of the life that the Doctor leads his companions into, and certainly not about the darkness in humanity's-- and the Doctor's-- hearts. At the same time there's a distinctly phoenix-like taste of hope tucked into the timey-wimey ending, and, thus, the entire fic, which redeems what might have been a distasteful piece of snuff fic into a wonderfully haunting morality play. Not for the faint of heart, or stomach, but totally worth it.

Okay, last rec! It's been great, thanks for having me.

Story:  Canary in the Coal Mine
Author: Meredith
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 6006
Author's Summary: This probably didn't happen. But the only one who knows for sure isn't talking. What would the Doctor do to convince the Time Lords that the threat of the Daleks was real?
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Romana.
Warnings: darkfic, mentions of character death. Also, it's a bit out-dated as of the End Of Time.

Recced because: One of her older stories and a little bit jossed by recent events, but it still holds up fantastically. I love stories that deal with the Time War. And I love stories that make fun of Gallifrey and Time Lord Society. And I really, really like stories that start off funny and then go punch you in the stomach. This does all of that, and does it wonderfully. Meredith's Eighth Doctor is bright and sweet even when he's being serious, and watching him try so heard is inspiring and heartbreaking. And Nine is feirce and sad and take-charge. And even Romana is great to watch, as she hovers between wanting to help her friend and fit into a society that has no room for anyone different.

So okay, sorry about the delay. On to the rec!

Everything that [info]x_los has ever written is brilliant. EVERYTHING. But of course, some brilliant fics are more brilliant than others, and one of those extra-brilliant fics is The Crane Wife. If you like slave!fic, you will like this story. If you don't like slave!fic, you will probably like this story anyway.

Story:The Crane Wife
Author: x_los
Rating:  Adult
Word Count: 46282
Author's Summary: The Doctor, a half-human renegade Time Lord who's never so much as set foot on his father's home world, has had a really rotten day. As if dying weren't bad enough, now he's facing the auction block. The renegade Time Lord Emperor of Hestin makes an ill-starred impulse buy.
Characters/Pairings: AU Fifth Doctor / Ainley!Master.
Warnings: It's a WIP, but only has the last chapter to go. Also explicit sex involving domination and a few consent issues.

Recced because: One of my favorite genres of fic is the cliche-done-right. The one that makes you realize why a subject is cliche in the first place: because it's awesome. This story is sweet, and adorable, and really funny. The Doctor and the Master, despite being alternate-universe counterparts, come off pitch-perfect. The descriptions are wonderful, the plot's engaging and well-paced, and the sex is really, really hot. What more could you ask for, other than the final chapter?

EDITED to fix font size. It was too small, now it looks too big. Sorry, guys.

So pretty much every story Netgirl_y2k's ever written has been recced here already-- but not every story. And not this story, which should be and probably is a crime! Lucky for you guys though I'm here now, and lying to the police for you fixing that.

Story: Gone For A Cup Of Tea (back in six months)
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating:All Ages
Word Count: 4204
Author's Summary: The highly unlikely but excellent adventures of Ten, Mickey and Rhys.
Characters/Pairings: the Tenth Doctor, Micky Smith, Rhys Williams.
Warnings: please DO NOT warn for slash or het.

Recced because: this story is wonderfully funny, which should be reason enough. Add on to that Micky and Rhys, who are solid, decent, normal guys and also pretty much the embodiment of the mundane lives their girlfriends are trying to escape from, throw the two blokes into the TARDIS with the poor, poor Doctor, who is much more used to hanging out with admiring women, and you've got pure gold.

Okay, number two! Versaphile hasn't been recced lately, and that is a crime.

Story: Win/Win, (the second installment of the series Game Theory, though it works perfectly well on its own.)
Author: Versaphile
Rating: teen, though I'd have rated it explicitly adult.
Word Count: 15686
Author's Summary: Every plan has to start somewhere. Warning: Amazing amount of wrongness, mad science, mind games, and a side of horror. Oh, and the Doctor is pregnant. Sequel to Game Over. Proceed at your own risk.
Characters/Pairings: the Tenth Doctor / John Simm's Master.
Warnings: well, see the author's summary. Torture, consent issues, and mpreg.

Recced because: Sometimes, you just need to sink your teeth into a nice long descent into madness, and Versaphile serves that up in spades. The Master defeats the Doctor's gambit with the Archangel network, and breaks his spirit. Dissatisfied with a Doctor that won't fight back, he impregnates the Doctor to give him something new to care about. It's kind of a mobius strip of a hurt/comfort fic, and makes for a gorgeous case study of how love doesn't necessarily make you a better person, it gives you an excuse to be any kind of person you want to be. And the Doctor and the Master really do love each other in this story, that's what makes it beautiful and terrible all at once: they are crazy about each other, and they're also just plain crazy.

Hello: and thanks for having me here! I suppose I'm a bit late today for the watchers on the east coast (and, I guess, all you dudes in England, hello!) but, uh, better late than never?

I like stories that are funny, and I like stories that are scary, and I really like stories that are both. I started with the new series, but I'm working my way through the classic as well. I have a ton of favorite stories, and what I'm going to rec is pretty much any of them that haven't already been recced here! It's a bit intimidating! Apologies in advance if I miss anything and do a repost.

Story: Of More Value Than Many Sparrows
Author: icebluenothing
Rating: non-adult. I'd say PG.
Wordcount: 1849
Summary: "Don't look up. Look around you." If you can't change history, what use is time travel? (Set after Father's Day and before The Empty Child)
Characters: the Ninth Doctor, Rose.
Warnings: um... spoilers for Father's Day?

Rec because: this is, for me, the ninth Doctor manifesto. It's everything that makes him my favorite Doctor. In here he's ancient and terrible, and battered and hurting, but he's still passionate, he's still got so much love for the universe. He's still going out there every day and patching things together not out of tired duty but because he really cares. And he picks Rose up and takes her along with him. It's gorgeous.
