Recced because: It's the crossover that needed to happen. Though I didn't know that until I read it, of course.

Bringing the Doctor face-to-face with Dax is simple and inspired, particularly with the newly-orphaned version 9.0. Nine and Dax's camaraderie and maybe friendship is rough around the edges but deeply satisfying. Their differences are as important to their understanding of each other as their similarities, and An Element of Blank is really just a fantastic look at both of them.

[The Doctor's] eyes flick around the cell. "Remind me again what I'm charged with."

"There were massive amount of chronoton particles being emitted. In a higher concentration than I've ever seen before." The Doctor's face remains impassive. "We know the aliens have the ability to change the timeline." A muscle in the Doctor's face twitches but his eyes don't leave hers. "That's what you were trying to do," she guesses. "But why?"

The Doctor blinks, his shoulders slump forward. Just a little; just enough. "You'd never believe me."

"Try me," insists Dax.
