Title: Any Colour You Like
Author: Calapine
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2744
Author's Summary: The Master's curious about his future wife.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Delgado), Lucy Saxon
Warnings: references to self-harm and suicide ideation.

Recc'ed Because: This story is a paradox, but it works nevertheless. The Master invites Lucy Saxon into his TARDIS and she accepts. The Master is curious and a bit uncomfortable, unfailingly polite and perhaps he do things to Lucy’s mind she doesn’t remember after. He may do it to be kind. And Lucy is damaged, which anyone who has survived the Master probably has to be, but she is also not afraid anymore. The chemistry between them too are very interesting and it is a story which can be read several times. It also beautifully and poetically written.

Story: Critical Angle
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 940
Characters: Tegan, Five
Summary: They say it's better here than anywhere else.

Recced because: Tegan is so well drawn here as the complex, confrontational and vulnerable person she is. This fic unravels the trauma that Tegan undergoes from traveling with the Doctor, tackles their complex relationship and how very distant and alien the fifth doctor can be. There are too many wonderful lines to list, but this one especially struck me: "She’ll think of Earth and he’ll tell her about all the wonderful places in the universe she’s never going to see because they’re too busy helping the not so wonderful places." Nothing is nice or neat in this fic. But despite that, it is the little moments -- Tegan dreaming of being a car mechanic, tea in the rain room, and Tegan's colonizing the cloister room -- that offer some humanity in the harsh and clinical prose.

A haunting fic.

Author: Calapine
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 1232
Characters/pairings: Eighth Doctor, Grace Holloway
Author's summary: Too much sugar in your tea: the Doctor and Grace at Christmas

Recced because: We could all use some Christmas-themed fluff at Christmas. This one is actually as thoughtful as it is cozy, being a conversation over Christmas dinner between Eight and Grace. (The author lists it as romance, and there's a small kiss, but there's nothing especially shippy about it, and it could easily be read as platonic too.) They talk about silly things and serious things, and the third-person present tense gives us Grace's down-to-earth POV, but with a somewhat dreamy quality, which works well for a story featuring the dreamy, enigmatic Eighth Doctor. A nice stand-alone vignette to warm a winter evening.

Story: The Pandora Project
Author: Calapine
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 53,658
Author's Summary: At the end of series three, the Doctor and the Master end up travelling together and totally manage not to destroy each other or the universe. More or less. Meanwhile, Martha gets a job offer from UNIT, Jack fails to realise his team are a bit useless, and there's a giant squid for no good reason whatsoever.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Simm!Master, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones

Recced because: This story has been on my to-be-recced list practically since [livejournal.com profile] calapine first posted it to LiveJournal, but I haven't gotten around to reccing it until now because I wanted to re-read it first, and could never quite find the time to sit and read a 53,000-word fic. But I thought I'd spend a few minutes at least skimming it this weekend ... except that "skimming" suddenly turned into "do nothing else until you finish reading this amazing fic in its entirety."

Seven years after Series 3, fandom has long since turned "the Master survived the events on the Valiant and travels with the Doctor instead" into a well-worn trope, but rarely is it handled as wittily, in-character, and compellingly as it is here. There are cameos from Classic Who characters, endless snark between the Tenth Doctor and the Master, and yes, a giant squid -- a vampire squid, to be exact, because if you're going to have a giant squid in a Doctor Who story, it might as well be a vampire, too. And there is also, of course, a fine plot holding all of this together, one that seamlessly blends the classic series with the new one, but saying more would spoil it. If you didn't have weekend fic-reading plans before, I hope you do now.

Author's Summary: The Doctor, Jamie, and just the one parachute

Characters/Pairings: Jamie McCrimmon, Two

Warnings: None

Recced Because:

The Doctor and Jamie are on a plane. We don't know why they're on the plane or what will happen to them after they get back on solid ground, but that doesn't matter. The plane is crashing. Two and Jamie have a moment of adorable bickering which ends with inevitable clinging. It's just one scene out of an unknown, larger adventure, but with all of the missing episodes that seems distinctly Two-ish in itself.

The Fiftieth anniversary is upon us, and [livejournal.com profile] calufrax is celebrating with some bonus recs - I'm reccing a drabble or brief ficlet for each Doctor in honour of the show's special day. Oddly enough it also has a charming feel of the British to it, which is a nice way to read something. The Master is a bit Stephen Fry-ish, too. Recced because: For my last rec, I was going to pick something really deep and meaningful. The I realized I'd rather just rec something really really silly. So this is it! The premise is essentially that after Adeola (from Army of Ghosts) died, she was recruited by the Black Guardian and brought back to life as Martha Jones in order to kill the Doctor. It basically just gets more excellent and ridiculous from there.

Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot, Liz Shaw, Fourth Doctor, White Guardian, Romana I, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: Not actually a crossover. No heads are lost in the course of this fic.

Recced because: It's light and silly and very fun and quite clever. Zoe ends up looking into the heart of the TARDIS and accidentally makes Jamie unable to stay dead. So of course he gets to stay with the Doctor for the rest of his (un)natural life as an immortal highlander. Er. Not that kind of highlander. Really.

Jamie folded his arms, determined to stand his ground, even though he was, in fact, sitting up in bed. “I saw it in one of those talking pictures. He had to keep chopping off people’s heads.”

Author's Summary: Right after that Martian adventure with some homicidal water, the Doctor decides to have a nice sleep; the Master wakes him up.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), The Master (Simm)
Warnings: The author gives none, although there are a few lines that might be unsuitable for younger people.
Recced because: This fic was written shortly after ‘Water of Mars’ aired, and it’s still my favourite coda to that episode (and it even fits in with canon, kinda). After all, who better than the Master to give the Doctor a few choice words after that particular imbroglio? It’s hilarious from start to finish, and yet has a deliciously dark undercurrent. Plus both characters are so perfectly portrayed that it truly does feel like a bit of canon left behind – the Doctor’s defensiveness, the Master’s glee... I can't count how often I've re-read it.

Recced because: Honestly, any story that starts out with a reference to the Ouroboros has immediately got my rapt attention as a Hellenic!geek, but that's just the beginning/ending of this lovely and intricate fic. The love story of the Doctor and River Song is portrayed here as something of a fairy tale -- almost ethereal and otherworldly, lyrical and gorgeous. Like the darkness swiftly creeping into a Grimm tale, though, this tale also has its own darkness interspersed throughout -- the inevitability of Time and, for want of a better word, Fate. Still, despite all that, the strength and beauty of the connection between River and the Doctor shines through and gives them/us hope. I think this is an excellent portrayal of this complex relationship and, I don't say this about many fics, but I can say with assurance that this story is my fanon for Doctor/River.

Recced because: Ileana is from the Loups-Garoux Big Finish audio, and as that suggests, she is indeed a werewolf; her interactions with the Fifth Doctor are revisited during a meeting with the Tenth Doctor in this short but very effective piece. The story is beautifully written, with lines such as On his back, her nails are claws are nails are claws which just pop with imagery, and both characters are perfectly drawn, with the Doctor looking for a little respite from his worries and his past, and Ileana being able to see through him, and show his fallibilities. It works wonderfully.

Marvellous Martha Jones

I'm recommending Martha Jones-centric fics all this week but they're not all Martha/Ten.

Author: Carmen Sandiego
Author Summary: Martha Jones and the UNIT Christmas Party.
Characters: Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart, Harry Sullivan, John Benton, Liz Shaw, Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, Second Doctor
Rating: All ages
Word count: 2601

This is a very humorous story about a Christmas get-together of the Doctor's former Companions at the Brig's house with a fair amount of amusingly snarky point-scoring from earlier Companions. And Martha gets to meet the Second Doctor:

Martha looked up. A sprig of mistletoe. Oh. Well she couldn't, obviously. And he -
The Doctor kissed her, and it was soft and gentle and entirely welcome. When he pulled away, Martha looked into his eyes and found no apologies or regrets or excuses. If anything, he looked rather pleased with himself.
"That was...nice," she said, unable to keep the smile from her lips. "Much nicer than last time."
"Last time!" said Jamie, poking his round the door. "Here, Doctor, what's this about then? You dinnae see me going around kissing lassies I've just met. I think you’ve got some explaining to do."

I've read this about 6 times since it was first posted and it makes me laugh every single time.

Rose is an old woman, now, and one who has always loved and been loved by the Doctor; she returns to him, at the beginning, and we get a fascinating look at the circularity of time, and the way endings can be a beginning too. Careful, gentle storytelling and lyrical writing are the icing on the cake; she is old and she has always been in love, Rose reflects, a great premise with top-notch execution.

Author's Summary: At the end, the Doctor didn't leave.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor/Grace Holloway, the Brig
Warnings: None

Recced because: Grace Holloway is never going to win any Most Popular Companion contests, but I always enjoy watching her respond to the Doctor's TARDIS invitation with, "You come with me!" In this story the Doctor does exactly that, and the slow mutual realization of how wrong they are for each other no matter how hard they try makes for painful, sad and fascinating reading. Even if the TV movie made you dyspeptic (nobody could blame you), this story will show you another side of Grace's character and her conflicted, sometimes contentious relationship with the Doctor. To be read when in the mood to indulge in a good bout of melancholy.

Warnings: Should I warn for Gallifreyan mythology?

Recced because: If someone is a thousand years old or more (or even if they're the nine-hundred years they claim to be), it's very silly to presume that they've only loved once in their life. This fic expresses that concept beautifully. It's wonderfully written, with lyrical prose and a firm grasp of canon. The incorporation of Pain, Death, and Time--the three Gallifreyan goddesses--lends a perfect note of unease. I almost didn't rec this, because hasn't everyone read something by Carmen Sandiego? But this fic just gets it so very right that I couldn't help myself. If you haven't read this already, please do. (It's not really as long as the pairing list makes it sound like. It's actually just under three thousand words.)

I'd also like to say that it's been a distinct pleasure to rec to everyone this past week. Due to the generosity of our mods, who let me sign up for another week, I'll be back at the end of April. Quite frankly, I can't wait!
