Rec - Old Bones by Mhalachai
I'm Marcus Rowland,
ffutures, and will be reccing on July 5th to 11th. I'm primarily a crossover fan / writer but I've tried to post something for everyone, with a preference for short to mid-length stories that emphasise character, rather than epic adventures. Apart from that I've tried to include a range of eras and genres - 1st, 9th and 10th Doctors, Sarah Jane Adventures, and Torchwood; tragedy, and comedy. There are a few crossovers, but most of the stories are unadulterated Who-fic.
Story: Old Bones
Author: Mhalachai
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 10848
Author's Summary: A man from Angela's past has come to set things right. (Torchwood/Bones crossover)
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness
Warnings: None
Recced because: I'm a sucker for good crossovers, and this is a beauty; it builds on some of the ideas in the Torchwood episode Small Worlds, and the major serial killer plot of Bones S3, to tell a haunting story of buried memories, possession, and insanity. It's been around on other sites for a couple of years, but only recently made it to Teaspoon - in my opinion it deserves to be better known in the Who fandom. I should mention that it does contain major spoilers for Bones S3, and that it helps (but isn't essential) to know the Bones characters and storyline.
Note - this isn't quite the beginning of the story, since the first couple of paragraphs contain major spoilers for Bones S3:
And then
(come away with us)
the scent of rose petals tugged at Angela's hair, a brush of wild forest air whipping at her skin in the artificial confines of the lab
(come, human child)
dragging out the memories of a childhood in woods and rocky beaches, of dancing on the sand and bonfires and singing and mommy holding her hand, the other in the hand of a tall man with brilliant blue eyes and a World War II greatcoat smelling of sea water and open countryside
(come away with us, forever)
and Angela moved with the breeze, chasing whispers down the hallway, scattering promises of all she'd run away from years before.
