A Song of His Own
Today, I offer you the Tenth Doctor with one of my favourite Companions, the inimitable Donna Noble.
Story: A Song of His Own
Author: EllyF (
ellyfanfiction on LJ)
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2668
Author's Summary: After their visit to the Oodsphere, Donna realises the Doctor needs to sing, too.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, the Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None
Reced because: EllyF likes to write 10/Donna, and though that’s not a romantic pairing that appeals to me, I think she has a very good grasp on the personality of this particular Companion. Most fan writers get Donna’s bold, outspoken, irreverent attitude; not all of them get that she is also very smart and intuitive and is capable of being very sensitive and caring.
In this gen hurt/comfort fic, EllyF shows us those other aspects of Donna. She gives us a missing scene set immediately after The Planet of the Ood. After two centuries of slavery, the telepathic Ood have been freed from the device that prevented them from sharing their minds with each other. They celebrate with a telepathic song of joy. It’s a happy ending... except that Donna is now aware that she’s traveling with a telepath who is the last surviving member of his species. Being Donna, she not only sympathises with the Doctor, she resolves to do something for him.
Go, read, and if you enjoy, please let the author know.

"You said..." Donna Noble walked across the floor and sat down next to him on the grating. "You said the Ood had been stifled for two hundred years. That they hadn't been able to sing properly in all that time."
"Yeah." His voice was low. "Cut off from each other for two centuries."
"That must have... well, sort of hurt. I mean, a telepathic species like that... if they're meant to be telepathic, then not being able to sing together would be rather like... losing a limb, or being deaf, wouldn't it?"
"Yeah." He nodded, still staring into space. "I reckon it would."
She was silent for a moment, watching him, watching the dark shadows in the depths of his eyes. Earlier, he'd sounded exuberant, even joyful: The circle is broken. The Ood can sing! But now he seemed subdued and solemn, and she thought she had a good idea why.
