rec: Castaways by Amy Wolf
Since we just had a regeneration scene, let's have a story that picks up directly after the regeneration from 8 to 9.
Story: Castaways
Author: Amy Wolf
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: Between the Time War and Rose.
Word Count: 16097
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: None
Recced because:
This is the story that first convinced me that Doctor Who fanfic was worth reading. :D If that's not convincing enough, try this: The Doctor, fresh from from the end of the Time War, crashes in the Philippines in the 31st century (not 21st century London! Amazing!). It could have been yet another character study of angst!9 (and god knows, there's angst in this story), but Amy Wolf gives us a plot, and good side characters along with our character study. This is a story about a Nine- damaged and confused- who's finding his way back to being the Doctor.
They found him halfway up a mountain, by a fishpond in the woods, squatting down to stare at the fish. He was humanoid, and quite human looking. He looked to be a fairly athletic male, about forty, and Caucasian with a prominent nose. His hair was short, but it might have been burnt off by whatever burned his clothes. They were charred to the point of nearly falling off. There was most of a white shirt, parts of a pair of pale gray trousers and a few scraps of something velvet around the arms. Oddly, his skin wasn’t burnt at all.
He didn’t respond to verbal communication. They tried four different languages, but he didn’t move. He didn’t react when the medic touched him, just stayed rigid, squatting over the fishpond. His skin was cold to the touch, suggesting severe hypothermia (since the last ice age started, the winters in the mountains could kill). And his deep blue eyes never wavered from the fish.
