Story: Of Strangers and Second Chances
Author: lyricwritesprose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1459
Author's Summary: After "Boom Town," Team TARDIS needs to find a place that will welcome an egg with no Family.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler, Slitheen, The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: Spoilers for Boom Town, obviously.

Recced because:

This is probably my favorite of the stories I've recced this week. It describes an event that must have happened, but was never shown. And lyricwritesprose (who has been heavily recced on this comm, and rightly so) manages in a few words to create Raxacoricofallapatorius- politics, pop culture, media and all. And the portrayal of the Doctor, Rose and Jack here is marvelous. If you like outside POV, world-building and gorgeously blatant allusions to folklore and fairytales, then you'll love this story as much as I do.

Story: Interrupted
Author: rea_p
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 443
Author's Summary: Strangers interrupt an ordinary day in 16th century England.
Characters/Pairings: Romana I, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None

Recced because:

It's very short, but very funny. And very in-character for Four and Romana I. Have a little Doctorish absurdity for a Friday!

Story: Companionship
Author: JJPOR
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3511
Author's Summary: Sometimes, you discover that you have more in common with somebody than either of you ever realised.
Characters/Pairings: Adric, Romana II, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None

Recced because:

Adric is in this. But really, this is about Romana. This is an introspective fic about her reasons for leaving the Doctor and what she thinks about that. Adric is treated marvelously by JJPOR, who shows him as the sort of young man who doesn't understand why his brilliance doesn't make him loved. She doesn't sugarcoat the character either; Adric's less lovely character traits are on display, but not bashed. And Romana is nothing but class- she's respectful and patient. And ultimately, this is a marvelous moment of, if not bonding, then at least understanding between the two characters

Story: Sacrifice
Author: unslinky
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 496
Author's Summary: A quick one written as a practise Time War Journal for Project Gallifrey.
Characters/Pairings: OMC
Warnings: Maybe a bit of gore, I suppose

Recced because:

This is quite short, but it's got a visceral punch to it. I liked it because it made the Time War feel real to me.

Story: fly me to the moon
Author: such_heights
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1669
Author's Summary: After the moon landing, Canton comes home. Canton/his boyfriend, the Doctor & the Ponds.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Canton Everett Delaware III, Other Character(s), Rory Williams, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: Spoilers for The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon, obviously.

Recced because:

I really just like this because I liked Canton so much. such_heights gives him a totally sensible, fleshed-out boyfriend, and I'm a sucker for sensible, fleshed-out OC's. They have Serious Talks about what happened, and then the Doctor shows up. And then he shows them a universe that's so big, it's got no room for idiotic things like harassment because of race or sexual orientation. This is a warm, fluffy fic which is mostly about Canton and his boyfriend, with the Doctor and the Ponds along for the ride.

Story: Nonparametrics
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 462
Author's Summary: "Singing. It's an aesthetic completion."
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because:

This fic is both clever and inventive. It manages to portray a non-human (non-humanoid?) perspective believably. And the Doctor is so perfectly himself here- himself at his best.

Story: Posterity
Author: iambickilometer
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4195
Charcters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Other Character(s)
Author's Summary: Jack has a long memory. And there will always be a member of Torchwood who can't leave well enough alone.
Warnings: None

recced because:
I picked this story partly because I wanted to rec at least one author that had never been recced on Calufrax before, and I wanted at least one Torchwood fic. Mostly, though, I picked it because it's so wonderfully true to the subject matter. It's about another Torchwood Cardiff team, some unspecified number of years in the future. The author does a does a good job of portraying each of the members of the team as individuals, and also their dynamic together. They feel like a family, much like the current team.

This story is jossed by CoE, but not in any way that matters to the larger point of the story. I like the reflection on Jack, on Torchwood, and on the way that nothing ever really changes, even when everything does.

Story: And Seven For a Secret
Author: Aeshna
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 57073
Charcters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Other Character(s)
Author's Summary: When Ben Haldane is left a cryptic note in his grandfather's will, it leads him to a story far stranger than he could ever have imagined.
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Swearing

recced because:
At 57k words, this fic is the length of a short novel. Make time to read it; it's that good. Set in WWII, it has Jack fighting the Nazi equivalent of Torchwood. In a castle. No more need be said.

I mean, I could also say that I love fics where we see Jack from the perspective of the regular people whose lives he touches, and that this does that brilliantly. I could compliment the characterization, and the fabulous OC's. I could talk about the story structure and the dialogue, and the way that Aeshna manages to capture the feel of a WWII war movie.

But mostly, it's about Jack fighting Nazis.

Since we just had a regeneration scene, let's have a story that picks up directly after the regeneration from 8 to 9.

Story: Castaways
Author: Amy Wolf
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: Between the Time War and Rose.
Word Count: 16097
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: None

Recced because:
This is the story that first convinced me that Doctor Who fanfic was worth reading. :D If that's not convincing enough, try this: The Doctor, fresh from from the end of the Time War, crashes in the Philippines in the 31st century (not 21st century London! Amazing!). It could have been yet another character study of angst!9 (and god knows, there's angst in this story), but Amy Wolf gives us a plot, and good side characters along with our character study. This is a story about a Nine- damaged and confused- who's finding his way back to being the Doctor.

Story:Heartbeats
Author: nonelvis
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2491
Author's Summary: "You can stay here as long as you like," Delirium says. "Except I think that won't be nearly long enough." (Crossover with Neil Gaiman's Sandman series.)
Characters/Pairings: Other Character(s), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: None

Recced because:
I dearly wanted to rec something with the Eighth Doctor in it. I went looking, and found this piece of wonderful. The Sandman characters are spot on, and their interaction with the Doctor is so true. I think Eight, in particular, would understand Delight-turned-Delirium.

In any case, this is officially my favorite version of the regeneration from 8 to 9.

As an accompaniment to the fic, I also offer this lovely piece of artwork I came across a while back:

Hello! I will be reccing this week. I warn you; I have a weakness for Jack Harkness (though I won't be reccing exclusively Jack fics). We begin with a story set in the years between the Game Station and the Torchwood series.

Story:1896
Author:Bad_Dickens
Rating:All Ages
Word Count: 3622
Author's Summary:
As alluded to in 1996, Jack Harkness made the acquaintance of Oscar Wilde. Was he out to kill him or to save him?
Characters/Pairings:Jack Harkness
Warnings: Nond

Recced because:
Mainly because I adore the idea of Jack meeting Oscar Wilde. The fic itself is well-written. It does a good job of portraying the sad circumstances of Wilde's life. You understand the empathy that Jack has for him, not just because he's a famous writer, but because he's so tragically doomed.
