REC: Valerie for forgetfulness

Story: Valerie for forgetfulness
Author: ClocketPatch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 707
Author's summary: her students said she was magical
Characters/Pairings: Ms Frizzle
Warnings: crossover with The Magic Schoolbus books

Recced because: Once in a while, if you're really lucky, you'll happen upon a crossover fic that just fits. Completely. And it may not be something you expect to fit this way—it might not be something you'd ever even thought could have anything to do with Doctor Who—but once you've read it, it's hard to picture things any other way. This is one of those fics.

What you need to know is that The Magic Schoolbus was a series of awesome picture books first written in the eighties to teach kids about science, which were later turned into a cartoon show in the nineties. They starred Ms Frizzle, a wacky primary school teacher who'd take her students on field trips through volcanoes or under water or inside the human body. And in this fic by ClocketPatch, she's definitely more than she seems:

There were so many mysteries in her life. She knew that for other people, normal people, carpet bags were never bigger inside than out, dress and earring ensembles didn’t change pattern to suit their wearer’s mood, and, of this she was certain, school buses could never change shape, or fly, or travel through time.

*goes away to read, all intrigued*

Never seen the picture books OR the cartoon, but given I'm currently reading a DW/SCC cross-over without ever seeing the latter, that's not going to stop me !

This one was *awesome*. Have to admit I thought of Iris Wildthyme at first, but with less booze, weaponry, and abductions. ;)

Which makes sense: the first time I encountered Iris my response was, "so... she's like Miss Frizzle with a booze, orgies and kidnappings?"

I haven't read this fic yet, but I saw the words "Magic Schoolbus" and ZOMG I LOVED THOSE BOOKS/SHOW. Best. Crossover. Ever. Even better than DW and Black Books.

I've watched hours of Magic Schoolbus with my kids. Ms. Frizzle rocks! I can't wait to read this -- what a clever idea.

I've always secretly suspected that Ms Frizzle was a Time Lord.

It's the only thing that makes sense!

Oh, I was so hoping someone would rec this! It really is one of the better and more believable crossovers I've read.

Those books were my childhood! The crossover concept is pure awesome, and the fic is really well done. Thanks for the rec!

You've all made me so very squee with the rec and all the nice things. This completely made my day when I found out - so thank yous! I would have said thank yous earlier too, but my computer and lj were having a serious disagreement.
