rec: The Investigators by johne
Because Second Doctor era needs more love and it's Friday, here's a fun romp. :)
Story: The Investigators
Author: johne
Rating: PG
Word Count: 1839
Author's Summary: She's an up-and-coming photographer in swinging London. She's a genius from the future who's working as a model to make ends meet. Together, they fight crime!
Characters/Pairings: Zoe Herriot, Isobel Watkins
Warnings: None.
Recced because: "The Investigators" is a fun mash-up of the Second Doctor's era and something vaguely reminiscent of "Charlie's Angels." But the characters are dead on - Zoe is in girl genius mode and Isobel proves to be resourceful just in the nick of time. It tromps shamelessly through the clichés of the genre (and really, this is part of its charm), complete with terrible German accents and a cameo appearance by the Brigadier as the shadowy man behind the femme fatales. A campy, witty, tone pervades the whole tone of the fic and it is very easy to imagine yourself watching the action sprawled out in front of a floor television with rabbit ears.
"Don't come any closer," he said, menacingly raising his beaker. "The next interfering little girl to move ends up as bald as a duck."
"I think you mean 'bald as a coot,'" Isobel said.
"You know, I've always wondered about that," Zoë said. "I don't know much about waterfowl, but I don't remember any of them being particularly featherless. Is there anything special about–"
She kicked out suddenly, catching the beaker with her foot. Such of its contents as hadn't already been spilled hit the Professor in the face; unfortunately for him, his mouth was open at the time.
