Author's Summary: Amy accompanies River on a typical workday.
Characters/Pairings: River Song, Amy Pond

Recc'ed Because: A sharp, witty and fun little adventure with nary a Doctor in sight. I love River and I love to see what she gets up to in the interim of her intersecting timeline with the Doctor. It also makes me wish there was more River and Amy mother-daughter interaction in the show. And the last line is perfect. :D

Author's Summary: Section-Leader Watkins' prisoner seems to know far too much about her.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe Heriot, Isobel Watkins (from The Invasion)
Warnings: None

Recced because: This fic was published only a few days ago, but its concept already got my attention. Not only does it have an interesting premise (if Zoe had stayed with the Doctor up until the events of Inferno) but the dialogue is very in-character and the characterization of mirrorverse! Isobel is fantastic (and a little frightening),

Characters/Pairings: Jamie/Victoria
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I love this early period of the Second Doctor's era, and even more so Jamie and Victoria's interaction. I felt chemistry there, and when I found this fic I was ECSTATIC. I must have read this twenty times and more. It's fluffy, these two are just too sweet, and there's a great memory from Victoria and an impulsive move Jamie makes to calm her. This fic just gives me such happy feels for sure.

Recced because: Well, for one thing it’s great Lucie fic, and there’s not nearly enough of that. For another, it brilliantly uses Lucie, Karen and the scenario to poke fun at the concept of an archnemesis and it’s very funny. And it even comes with cake. Author's Summary: There are times Susan just won't stop screaming
Characters/Pairings: Susan Foreman, One
Warnings: N/A

Recced because:

This fic is set in the murky era of Susan and the Doctor's early adventures. They aren't called Susan and the Doctor yet; they are a mysterious pair, a strange old man and an unnamed child showing up unexpectedly in the night. And, as the outsider POV makes clear, they are aliens and unfamiliar with the world their exile has brought them too. The child who will be Susan is very young here, but her need for food and warmth is already forcing the man who will one day be the Doctor to depend on humans – and also, to defend them.

Warnings: n/a

Recced because: Crack ships that someone work out to not be crack. A nice melding of my favourite Doctor with one a little bit more classic. Some brilliant one-liners (the best is from Romana II, somewhere near the end), and a hell of a lot of verbal sparring, which for me often makes a fic. It's also a pretty clever one, with a lot of world-building obviously done in the background.

Recced because: Okay, I admit it, I have long carried an enormous girlcrush on Ace. This is the woman who brings a rope ladder and homemade explosives with her on Doctor-related adventures. This is the woman who waltzes through her one encounter with the Daleks and gives no flips, because she can just beat them up with her electrified baseball bat, or blow them up with her Nitro-9, or – oh, kind UNIT solider, is that rocket launcher for me? It is?

Then the show introduced Oswin Oswald, who I immediately fell down and worshipped as The Second Coming of Ace. They’re snarky, they’re competent, and they’re not going to let a bunch of rolling salt shakers with eggbeaters for hands get them down, amirite?

And then amazing author johne had them team up to fight terrorists, with sass, verve and style. The poor terrorists never stood a chance.

"They" say time flies when you're having fun. Well, this week certainly seems to have flown past and I have indeed had fun sharing some recs with all of you and hopefully turning you on to some good fics you wouldn't otherwise have read. Until next time, then, I leave you with this, a very funny drabble:

Story: Flying Visit
Author: johne
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 100
Author's Summary: The head of Torchwood Three catches a couple of trespassers.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (Fatal Death), Emma, and another character...
Warnings: None

Recced because: Well, I'll try and keep this brief or it will end up being longer than the fic itself, but it made me laugh like a drain the first time I read it, and that's reason enough to be going on with, I think. It also features the Doctor from the Red Nose Day charity special Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death, as portrayed by Rowan Atkinson, and his companion Emma as played by Julia Sawalha, and you don't get enough of that kind of thing. Now, if you're not familiar with a certain other television programme also starring Rowan Atkinson, you're probably not going to get the joke, but see it as an opportunity to broaden your pop cultural horizons (I'm sure you'll find at least a couple of relevant clips if you go searching on YouTube). And then you can come back and read this and marvel at the author's masterful bait and switch here, while also agreeing how very, very appropriate his choice of character is. Plus, you'll be better able to imagine the unimpressed expression on Atkinson!Doctor's face:

"The Doctor rolled his eyes."

And with that, I bid you au revoir. ;)

Story: Lying in Wait
Author: johne
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1457
Author's Summary: In which the Doctor, Sarah and the Brigadier catch a murderer.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Warnings: Do not attempt to consume beverages while reading.

Recced because: Okay, a little background. The UNIT / Third Doctor stories filmed in the early 1970s were set in "the near future" aka the 1980s... but visually, they're the most late-'60s/early-'70s things possible. Classic Who fans have spent the last thirty-some years wrangling over when exactly these stories take place, how to explain the anomalies, etc etc etc.

Now we get to the fun part. Johne proposes: "No-one can agree exactly when the UNIT stories are set. So they could have been in any year. Of any century." Thus - the "Really Stretching UNIT Dating" series, wherein UNIT goes about their normal business perfectly as usual... in the 1790s, the 1920s, 2020, and now Ancient Greece.

[ETA: Sorry, the original idea was not johne's. Credit goes to Daniel Gooley on Usenet's rec.arts.drwho, who suggested way back in '99 (1999, that is *g*), "I'd rather like to see some stories which really stretch UNIT continuity. Having the usual UNIT crew going about their usual business in an 18th century setting without a word of explanation, for example." Thanks to Johne for pointing this out! :D]

And it is glorious. This story in particular features Three, the Brig, and Sarah Jane, all being exactly as awesome as usual or a little more so, plus some offhand references to unwritten adventures in the same 'verse. Also, did I mention AWESOME?

(Full disclosure: the octopus in the bath was originally my fault, and I am a little prejudiced in favor of stories that use it. But it's still a fantastic story quite apart from that!)

(Also, Greek!Brig. I rather want fanart. *thinkyface*)

Author's Summary: Shou Yuing renews her acquaintance with Ace, and hears the story of one particular relic.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane/Shou Yuing
Warnings: None (albeit, rather creepy at times).

Recced because: I must have said it before. But I love the stories that explore the darker side of the Seventh Doctor's period. Unlike most of them, this one isn't exactly about the Seventh Doctor, or his period. This one introduced to Ace long after she's left the Doctor, and instead of exploring the implication of his actions, gives a snapshot of how they still influence his companions, long after he's left them. And it manages to do it with humour and charm, so I was completely sold.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1175
Author's Summary: The Land of Fiction has one last surprise for Zoe and Jamie.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (2nd), Zoe Herriot, Jamie McCrimmon
Warnings: None

Recced because: This really is a top-quality piece of Two-fic that also manages to take what might be termed a playful swipe or two at this great pastime that we call fanfiction. A missing scene from the Two story The Mind Robber, this sees Jamie and Zoe have one last unsettling encounter before they manage to make good their escape from the Land of Fiction. Johne, as those of you who have read his stories will know, is an extremely accomplished writer and moreover has a deep appreciation and affection for the characters he is writing here. For me, that is the mark of good fanfic. Jamie and Zoe are excellently drawn, especially Jamie's sense of straightforward devotion and loyalty to his fellow TARDIS crewmembers. And above all, as a reader and writer of fanfic, I know for a fact that I've experienced the feeling Zoe's feeling here - and I bet a great many of you have too. And on top of all that, it's also very funny indeed. I strongly advise all of you to go and read this and leave the author some well-deserved reviews.

Story: Business As Usual
Author: johne
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 12, 945
Author's Summary: The Doctor, Jo and UNIT investigate a haunted house. Oh, and the year is 1793.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Jo Grant, Mike Yates, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, The Master (Delgado)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a splendid, in-character adventure for the UNIT ‘family’ as they investigate a haunted house. As ever, they’re busy saving the world, Jo stays plucky (and keeps up with the latest fashions), the Brigadier arrives in the nick of time, the Doctor complains about the primitive era he’s stuck in, and the Master is up to no good. It’s just that the year happens to be 1793.

The idea behind this being that UNIT dating being as inconsistent as it is, why should it not be more so? Why can’t our heroes at UNIT simply go about their daily business in any decade or century a fanfic author chooses? Which is a brilliant idea, but I think the thing that impresses most about this story is that it isn’t gimmicky – it’s first and foremost, as I said, a marvellous, straight, Three-era adventure. The century, as the premise suggests, is irrelevant, although rest assured, the historical setting is well done, too. Whichever way you look at it, it’s an excellent piece of fanfic!

Characters/Pairings: Vicki
Warnings: None.

Recced because: First of all, johne's repository contains all of the rare and delightful early Doctor and minor character fics one could wish for - and that includes this gem, which is a fantastic take on Vicki-as-Cressida, giving hope to the Trojan refugees and leading them as best she can. And oh, does this placate my inner history nerd, as well as create delicious, clever sci-fi drama. The world needs more Vicki fic, but for now I'm content with a piece wherein she blows stuff up and is generally awesome. Not to mention the last line, which both demands and rejects the idea of a sequel, as it seeps hauntingly back through the entire story.

Most people reading this will already have heard the sad news about Nicholas Courtney aka Brigadier Sir Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart. While he won't be on screen again as the Brigadier, we can, like the Doctor, always visit the Brig again at any point in his past - though with the written word and DVD/video-recordings, rather than a time machine.

Obviously, in light of this event I wanted to rec something with the Brig in it. What I have chosen is almost more a story about Liz, certainly a story more about their relationship than simply about the Brig, but I was planning on reccing it anyway, and it seems wrong to shy away from it just because it's relatively light-hearted and not entirely about Sir Alistair.

Story: A Turn In The Park
Author: johne
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 549
Author's Summary: Liz, the Brigadier, and a cliché.
Characters/Pairings: Liz/the Brigadier

Recced because: It's a lovely, understated story about the relationship between these two characters: Liz, stubborn but willing to change her mind if there is evidence to support such a change, and the Brigadier, a man of restrained emotional responses, but one not without great care and affection, not that at all. A thorough gentleman, despite whatever amusement he might derive from a situation. It's very short, there are relatively few events (in fact, the only event, 'Liz hurting her ankle', happens off screen), but the fic does a lot with its word count, and with what the summary describes as a cliché.

Extract: "I suppose you think I should have stayed put and screamed?" she said.

"At least one patrol would have been in earshot the whole time. We are investigating two disappearances, after all, and I'd rather that the third one wasn't you."

Author's Summary: Donna finds herself living someone else's life. The only person who might be able to help her is a strange little man with a question mark umbrella.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Seven
Warnings: None

Recced because:

This fic is deliciously strange. It’s one of those stories you can come back to and read over and over, prying up a different bit of meaning each time. What caused Donna’s identity crisis? Did the Doctor do it? What are the skeleton creatures? Seven isn’t giving any answers (well, none that aren’t cryptic in any case), but by the end it hardly matters. I’ll admit to being a bit biased since these are my two favourite characters in the Whoniverse, but Donna and Seven make a fantastic team. Also, Seven’s run at disguising himself as a psychic shaman is hilarious.

Story: The Investigators
Author:johne
Rating:
 PG
Word Count:

Author's Summary:
She's an up-and-coming photographer in swinging London. She's a genius from the future who's working as a model to make ends meet. Together, they fight crime!
Characters/Pairings: Zoe Herriot, Isobel Watkins
Warnings: None.

Recced because: "The Investigators" is a fun mash-up of the Second Doctor's era and something vaguely reminiscent of "Charlie's Angels." But the characters are dead on - Zoe is in girl genius mode and Isobel proves to be resourceful just in the nick of time. It tromps shamelessly through the clichés of the genre (and really, this is part of its charm), complete with terrible German accents and a cameo appearance by the Brigadier as the shadowy man behind the femme fatales. A campy, witty, tone pervades the whole tone of the fic and it is very easy to imagine yourself watching the action sprawled out in front of a floor television with rabbit ears.

Story: Jamie’s Angels in: Univited
Author: johne
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 4811
Author's Summary: Everyone else is at the Christmas lunch. Donna's in the office on her own — at least, until a rather dubious plumber shows up.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Victoria Waterfield, Zoe Heriot, Gia Kelly, Isobel Watkins
Warnings: None.

Recced because: If I sneak it in right now, under cover of snow, no one will notice it’s technically a Christmas story?

Donna is left alone to mind the office and encounters the Second Doctor and Jamie in the guise of plumbers; what’s more there seem to be a lot of other strangers about, up to no good. This is a great comic fic to start off the week with a smile. Johne’s idea of the mythical ‘Season 6B’ is certainly much more fun than any others I’ve seen. The Sixties characters cause trouble and Donna stands no nonsense and sets the world to rights, as ever. If you’ve got the January blues, this fic is just the ticket to cheer you up.
