Hello, again! I'm your reccer for the next couple of weeks.
I hope you enjoy the stories I share.

Story: a constellation of us
Author: countingstars
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 1,650
Author's Summary: And if he could, he'd give every star her name.
Characters/Pairings: Jamie McCrimmon, The Doctor (2nd), Victoria Waterfield, Zoe Herriot, Jamie/Victoria
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a lovely, fluffy little piece that looks into Jamie's feelings for Victoria as well as touch upon their adorable interactions. A very romantic little story that weaves in missing scenes up until Victoria leaves and Jamie has to deal with missing and yearning for her. I feel like this is exactly the kind of closure these characters deserve, no matter how bittersweet. A definite overlooked story that should have more reviews.

Story: Vacuum
Author: Inkfire
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1,082
Author's Summary: Something is missing in Zoe’s mind.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe

Recced because: I love Zoe, but the ending she got onscreen is terribly upsetting. Here, Inkfire takes the first steps towards rectifying that: even if Zoe has lost all her memories of traveling with the Doctor – and all her character growth to boot – she knows something has been lost, and wants to try to recover it. "Vacuum" is a brief and meditative character study with a genuine feel for how unsettled Zoe must have felt after "The War Games," and if you're a Zoe fan, I think you'll appreciate that this story ends on such a hopeful note.

Going to try and squeeze in one last rec. :)

Story: Turned
Author: johne
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1450
Author's Summary: Section-Leader Watkins' prisoner seems to know far too much about her.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe Heriot, Isobel Watkins (from The Invasion)
Warnings: None

Recced because: This fic was published only a few days ago, but its concept already got my attention. Not only does it have an interesting premise (if Zoe had stayed with the Doctor up until the events of Inferno) but the dialogue is very in-character and the characterization of mirrorverse! Isobel is fantastic (and a little frightening),

Story: Six Things Zoe Learned From Jamie
Author: Penny
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 8042
Author's Summary: Jamie was giving her that look which said 'You poor soul, is this not screamingly obvious' and being on the receiving end of it for a change was giving her a nasty sinking feeling in her stomach. Things Jamie taught Zoe, or how Zoe learned that she doesn't always have to know everything.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe Heriot, Jamie McCrimmon, Second Doctor
Warnings: Possible spoilers for The War Games.

Recced because: It does what it says on the tin, basically, and very well. Despite all her advantages over Jamie, there are some things that Zoe can learn from him, and this is a thoughtful, engaging and sometimes humorous ramble through some of those – and also a great look at their friendship. It’s a lovely character piece, with a true feel for Jamie, Zoe, the Doctor and this particular era, something that is always a treat to read.

Title: I've been doing bad things
Author: Penny
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2507
Author's Summary: "This is Doctor Zoe Heriot, senior technician aboard station seven. Making my final report. Experiment Zeta is a failure." Zoe's in the middle of sacrificing herself to save the earth from a hoard of the undead when she's rescued by a mysterious blonde girl with a homemade energy-weapon. Or, Zoe and Jenny team up to fight zombies.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe Heriot, Jenny, Zoe/Jenny
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: Ummm... it's Zoe and Jenny fighting zombies? Do you need more? I love the character voices and the humor and descriptions and the frenetic pace and plot, and the fact that the author gives an entirely earnest and believable (within the DW universe) take on the base-under-siege trope with "artificially reanimated corpses". It's fun and hilarious and action-packed and as sweet as sweet can be when your first date is being rescued from a zombie horde.

Story: The Doctor Cooks (The Eleventh Time Lucky Remix)
Author: paranoidangel
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3264
Author's Summary: The Doctor offers to cook dinner for Amy and Rory. What could go wrong?
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond/Rory Williams, First Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Susan Foreman, Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot, Third Doctor, Jo Grant, Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Fifth Doctor, Tegan Jovanka, Nyssa, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane, Eighth Doctor, Charley Pollard, Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble.
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor claims he can cook. Actually, as it turns out, the Doctor has always claimed that he could cook. This fic starts off with the Eleventh Doctor promising to cook a special meal for Amy and Rory, and then moves on to a series of flashbacks that show past Doctors, past companions, and past culinary (mis)adventures. Much of it is very funny, but there is also a wonderful depth to the writing, especially in the framing story of Eleven, Amy, and Rory.

Author's Summary: Charley, Zoe and the Doctor go back to the TARDIS for tea. Epilogue to 'How Very 1920s'.
Characters/Pairings: Charley Pollard/Zoe Heriot/The Doctor (8th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I love the character interactions in this piece before the tea party becomes, you know, something else.

About a year ago I watched The War Games, and was left with a hole which needed to be fixed. This story is the best ‘Zoë remembers’ story I’ve come across, and I thought I’d share it with you all.

Story: Eidetic
Author: locker_monster
rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1058
author's summary: there are others who have forgotten the Doctor.
characters/pairings: Tenth Doctor, Zoë Heriot
warnings: none

recced because:

This story is simply beautiful in all its aspects. The language and the descriptions recreate Zoë’s entire life and character in just a few sentences, and the characterisation is just perfect. The parallels between the war games and the ending of series four are obvious, yet here they are handled with a subtlety and delicacy I’ve not seen before.

It’s also a touching look inside the Doctor’s mind, and how he never really lets go of those who leave him. In just a thousand words the author explores this and creates a heart-warming look at the bond between the Doctor and his former companion.

I really cannot describe the feel and brilliance of this story any more without giving it all away, so please, just go and read it. Even if you don’t know who Zoë is, give it a try.

Story: An Unlikely Escape
Author: Lissy Strata
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1384
Characters: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot, Daleks
Author's Summary: They're trapped in a locked room with a Dalek. Can the Doctor talk their way out of this one?
Warnings: Swearing
Recced because: This feels like it should have been part of a Second Doctor serial. It's got everything that's awesome about TARDIS Team Cute, with Zoe being clever and Jamie being brave and safety clings, and I could see and hear Two perfectly with his brilliant panicked bluffing. It's all wonderfully silly, and then the end happened and I nearly woke up the house with my giggles.

Story: Inequalities
Author: Styrofoam monster
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 355
Author's Summary: To put it simply, things aren't adding up. Zoe-centric.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe
Warnings: none

Recced because: This short, effective story is set after the Time Lords wipe Zoe's memories of her travels with the Doctor and return her to her own time. Although Zoe doesn't remember what happened, she does feel that something is wrong. However, her attempts to work out the problem by using logic don't really succeed. Problem Child, a fic I recced on this comm almost five years ago (where did the time go?), has the same basic premise but is a humorous take on the situation. Proving that there's room for different approaches, Inequalities uses a more serious approach that works just as well in its own way.

Story: Four Things Jamie Learned about Time (and Travelling in it)
Author: Doctor Tam
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 517
Author's Summary: As the title says. "Jamie frowned at his watch, then shrugged. Maybe he’d get the Doctor to explain in later."
Characters/Pairings: Jamie McCrimmon, Second Doctor, Polly Wright, Victoria Waterfield, Zoe Heriot, Ben Jackson
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Another, much earlier companion, trying to make sense of travelling with the Doctor – this time Jamie, learning about time itself. Despite the brevity, this fic gets a lot into each of its sweet and perfectly-characterised snapshots of Jamie’s days aboard the TARDIS and the strangeness, pleasures - and friendships - they bring.

Hello Calufrax! I'm [personal profile] dbskyler. Here are some more of my favorite stories from the Teaspoon, which I am very excited to rec to you!

Story: Gearbox (The Won't Miss a Piece Remix)
Author: neveralarch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6103
Author's Summary: “How does the TARDIS work?” asks Ace.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Seventh Doctor, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, First Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Herriot, Second Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Third Doctor, Romana II, Fourth Doctor, Erimem, Fifth Doctor, Melanie Bush, Sixth Doctor, Hex Schofield.
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a work of brilliance, and I really mean that. The structure of it -- interspersing scenes between the Seventh Doctor and Ace with scenes between earlier Doctors and their companions -- is very well done, and the writing is top-notch, but all of that is almost irrelevant once you come to realize the central conceit of the fic, which is truly a thing of marvelous beauty. If you don't know all the Doctors or companions involved, don't worry, because this is a fic where knowing the characters isn't important (I don't know them all either). All you really need to know about is the TARDIS -- and you might just pick up a new piece of fanon by the end.

Hello! Ya'll belong to ME this week! I do love Classic Who but I'll do my best to bring a mix of New Who and maybe some Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures in to mix things up a little.

Story: Dreams and Memories (The Oneirology Remix)
Author: KindKit
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 303
Author's Summary: Zoe, Jamie, and the Third Doctor, dreaming.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe, Jamie, 3
Warnings: None

Recced because: Usually I'm all about the humor but I do appreciate a whallop of sheer heartbreak every once in a while. This triple-drabble explores the ultimate fates of these three friends after the Time Lords forcibly separated them (an act which has always made me seethe) and, like I said, it's heartbreaking but beautifully written and underscored with just the faintest line of hope.

Story: Old Shame
Author: johne
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1175
Author's Summary: The Land of Fiction has one last surprise for Zoe and Jamie.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (2nd), Zoe Herriot, Jamie McCrimmon
Warnings: None

Recced because: This really is a top-quality piece of Two-fic that also manages to take what might be termed a playful swipe or two at this great pastime that we call fanfiction. A missing scene from the Two story The Mind Robber, this sees Jamie and Zoe have one last unsettling encounter before they manage to make good their escape from the Land of Fiction. Johne, as those of you who have read his stories will know, is an extremely accomplished writer and moreover has a deep appreciation and affection for the characters he is writing here. For me, that is the mark of good fanfic. Jamie and Zoe are excellently drawn, especially Jamie's sense of straightforward devotion and loyalty to his fellow TARDIS crewmembers. And above all, as a reader and writer of fanfic, I know for a fact that I've experienced the feeling Zoe's feeling here - and I bet a great many of you have too. And on top of all that, it's also very funny indeed. I strongly advise all of you to go and read this and leave the author some well-deserved reviews.

Story: Things That Did Not Happen in 2011
Author: Curuchamion
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 309
Author's Summary: Nine attends the Brigadier's funeral, maybe. (Rated for major character death - the Brig, obviously. *hat off*)
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot
Warnings: Major Character Death

Recced because: I just don’t read death!fic much as rule – and yet not only did I read this one, but I liked it very much, and I keep returning to it. I can’t explain exactly why and how, but Curuchamion has a knack of packing a huge punch in very few words that makes 300 words equal 3000 from anyone else. And maybe this never happened, after all, and maybe it did, but the author is right about one thing: if there ever was a moment where the Doctor would do this, it’s the moment chosen here.
[identity profile] biichan.livejournal.com
Story: There Can Be Only One
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: ~1400
Author's Summary: Five times in the life of Jamie McCrimmon when he became immortal and never left the Doctor. As you do
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot, Liz Shaw, Fourth Doctor, White Guardian, Romana I, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: Not actually a crossover. No heads are lost in the course of this fic.

Recced because: It's light and silly and very fun and quite clever. Zoe ends up looking into the heart of the TARDIS and accidentally makes Jamie unable to stay dead. So of course he gets to stay with the Doctor for the rest of his (un)natural life as an immortal highlander. Er. Not that kind of highlander. Really.

Jamie folded his arms, determined to stand his ground, even though he was, in fact, sitting up in bed. “I saw it in one of those talking pictures. He had to keep chopping off people’s heads.”

On the Doctor and his companions – and why it is he finds himself travelling with humans so often:
Story: and the lightning
Author: Doctor Tam
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 547
Author's Summary: During a visit to a far future, the Doctor reflects on how human his perspective has become.
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot
Warnings: None.

Recced because: This is a beautiful ficlet, and a rare peek into the Doctor’s mind, as he reflects on how travelling with his companions has changed him and the way he sees the universe. It’s tightly-written and moving, and while it happens to be Two thinking of Jamie and Zoe (and those that came before them), it would be easy to imagine similar thoughts from other Doctors at other times – Nine and Rose, Seven and Ace, Four and Sarah, Three and Jo, Eleven and Amy. It’s true here, and true throughout the show. (Well, just look at what happens when Ten travels alone…)

Story: Section 3-52
Author: atraphoenix
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1501
Author's summary: Zoe couldn’t continue to wander around the bridge in that catsuit. It was Kirk's job – his duty, even – to get her out of it.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe Heriot/James T Kirk, Spock
Warnings: Star Trek XI crossover

Recced because: This fic is my fault and I will freely admit it. After Star Trek XI came out, I commented in my lj that it would be awesome if Zoe/Kirk fic were to exist and [livejournal.com profile] atraphoenix took the idea and ran with it. Which I will be be forever grateful for, because this fic exceeds my wildest expectations. It's exceedingly fun to read. Kirk is so very Kirk and Zoe so very Zoe and I challenge anyone to not grin at the thought of Zoe on the Enterprise in science division blues.

Happy Saturday! Today we're era hopping.

Story: A Shift in Perspective
Author:Persiflage
Rating:
 Teen
Word Count:
 50234
Author's Summary:
The Tenth Doctor goes missing and it's up to Martha Jones to track him down again, but it proves both harder and more instructive than she expects.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (All incarnations), The White Guardian, Torchwood, a plethora of companions
Warnings: Spoilers for just about everything. They are warned for in the author's notes of each section.

Recced because: Set a few months after series 4, "A Shift in Perspective" sends Martha on a journey that has her meeting the Doctor - yes, every incarnation of him. What stands out about this particular fic (and Persiflage's writing in general) is her nuanced and strong portrayal of Martha Jones: she's independent, she's strong, and she does what she has to do. Part of the charm of "A Shift in Perspective" is the fact that you get to see glimpses of Martha interacting with all of the Doctors (who are all impeccably characterized) as well as many of the previous companions. Moreover, the fic is fast-paced and features a solid plot alongside the solid characterizations. Overall, a wonderful fic to park yourself and read on a summer day (or on any day, really).

Because Second Doctor era needs more love and it's Friday, here's a fun romp. :)

Story: The Investigators
Author:johne
Rating:
 PG
Word Count:
 1839
Author's Summary:
She's an up-and-coming photographer in swinging London. She's a genius from the future who's working as a model to make ends meet. Together, they fight crime!
Characters/Pairings: Zoe Herriot, Isobel Watkins
Warnings: None.

Recced because: "The Investigators" is a fun mash-up of the Second Doctor's era and something vaguely reminiscent of "Charlie's Angels." But the characters are dead on - Zoe is in girl genius mode and Isobel proves to be resourceful just in the nick of time. It tromps shamelessly through the clichés of the genre (and really, this is part of its charm), complete with terrible German accents and a cameo appearance by the Brigadier as the shadowy man behind the femme fatales. A campy, witty, tone pervades the whole tone of the fic and it is very easy to imagine yourself watching the action sprawled out in front of a floor television with rabbit ears.

Story:  The Ten Doctors
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 25,568
Author’s Summary: It was history’s greatest and most famous party.
Characters/Pairings: The first ten Doctors and Romana plus a wide assortment of companions, a couple of classic Masters and the Brigadier, toss well.
Warnings: None
Recced because: I nearly passed it over this time merely because JJPOR is a very popular author who had another well-deserved recommendation just last week (don’t miss that one either!), but decided we’d just let this be his month for a bounty of riches, goodness knows he’s given all of us enough reading enjoyment to deserve it.

This piece was written as a tribute for the 45th anniversary of the show and it quite appropriately is the sort of multi-Doctor fic that brings the reader back again and again for another round.  I expect nearly every writer has to give the “what would happen if all of the Doctors were together at once” scenario a try, but some are definitely better than others; this is one of the good ones and you won’t regret it for a moment.

In essence, Ten has decided that a doomed planet famous for having partied hard right up until the moment their sun went supernova would be the perfect setting for a gathering of his selves and as the guests arrive each and every one is so perfectly portrayed it is a complete delight.  Poor Susan making the best of a doting crowd of Grandfathers, Romana’s opinions regarding the appetizers and Six’s opinions regarding her plus the consequences of expressing those thoughts aloud are only a sprinkle of the stellar moments here, a fabulous panorama lightly sauced with punch.  As no doubt suspected, there are humorous moments but also a few snatches of adventurousness and even some serious and empathetic twists for the heart.

For the uninitiated to his works, JJPOR is a find indeed; a top-notch competent, imaginative and high quality writer whose stories never disappoint.  I highly recommend without reservation not only this particular bit of mildly cracky fancy, but any of his stories across the spectrum.  Enjoy the ride.

Story:Bad Judgment
Author: Van Donovan
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3,055
Author’s Summary: Poor judgment leads to tragedy.
Characters/Pairings
: The Second Doctor, Jamie, Zoe, the Cybermen.
Warnings: Angst, Character death

Recced because: There are so many times when one slip of fate, one twist of luck or mistake in timing would have meant overwhelmingly terrible disasters for so many of those dear to the Doctor. The author here introduces us to one such a time and hauntingly takes us through to the tragic end.

Van Donovan has had several stories recommended, something which is no surprise in light of the intensity and crafting of this sampling here. The Second Doctor has, as usual, failed to properly communicate what he is up to with his companions and the results are literally fatal. My heart was wrung for Jamie, for Zoe and for the Doctor; it is a tragedy indeed but none of it is written gratuitously, and it is not graphic in its descriptions; the tale is skillfully and precisely measured out. This is a dark but excellent read that you will remember.

Hail & well met; I'm [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook , known as vvj5 on Teaspoon and I'll be your reccer for this week. I'm very fond of all the Doctors, so there should be a fair spread of eras across the week.

Story: Jamie’s Angels in: Univited
Author: johne
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 4811
Author's Summary: Everyone else is at the Christmas lunch. Donna's in the office on her own — at least, until a rather dubious plumber shows up.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Victoria Waterfield, Zoe Heriot, Gia Kelly, Isobel Watkins
Warnings: None.

Recced because: If I sneak it in right now, under cover of snow, no one will notice it’s technically a Christmas story?

Donna is left alone to mind the office and encounters the Second Doctor and Jamie in the guise of plumbers; what’s more there seem to be a lot of other strangers about, up to no good. This is a great comic fic to start off the week with a smile. Johne’s idea of the mythical ‘Season 6B’ is certainly much more fun than any others I’ve seen. The Sixties characters cause trouble and Donna stands no nonsense and sets the world to rights, as ever. If you’ve got the January blues, this fic is just the ticket to cheer you up.

Story: How Very 1920s

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3,138
Author's Summary: The Doctor dances with an old friend, while Charley dances with a new one.
Characters/Pairings: Two/Jamie, Eight/Jamie, Charley/Zoe
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a delightfully sweet little story in which Eight, Charley, Two, Jamie, and Zoe all end up at a formal dance, and Zoe decides to play matchmaker for Two and Jamie as well as herself. It's a simple and well-trod premise, perfectly executed here with sparkling dialogue and those little touches that make each character seem fully realized. Be sure to follow the link at the end to the recently posted (and more adult) epilogue, which includes Eight/Charley/Zoe and is every bit as wonderful.

Story: Isobel's Zoe
Author: Amy Wolf
Rating: Adult
Word count: 1200
Author's summary: What can go on between two women, besides photography.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe/Isobel Watkins (from The Invasion)
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: This fic does everything right. Both women are very well characterised, with a clear contrast being drawn between Zoe's openminded 21st century perspective (as broadened further my travelling with the Doctor) and Isobel's dealing with attitudes to homosexuality that she's absorbed from the culture of her time. It's that bit of characterisation that's my very favourite thing about it: I don't think I've seen a better handling of the issue in fanfic before or since: most of the time, it's handwaved away and when it's not it tends to be either superficial or clunky. The sex is both integral to the plot and very hot, even while walking that tightrope. And on top of all that, it slots perfectly into its moment in canon.

Story: Being Educational
Author: Amy Wolf
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 338
Author's Summary: Aliens demand that the Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe all share a bed. Zoe uses the chance to learn a few things.
Characters/Pairings: Jamie McCrimmon/The Doctor (2nd)/Zoe Herriot
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It's sweet and very, very funny - I giggled all the way through it. It's wonderfully in-character, and really captures the OT3 element perfectly. Worth reading even if you're not familiar with this era, because it'll actually give you a great idea of the joy that is Two, Zoe and Jamie.

Story: The Girl From Someone Else's Future
Author: Nostalgia
Rating: Teen
Author's summary: "You've got lovely skin," he tells her. "The hands of a mathematician."
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Zoe
Warnings: implied sex
Word Count: ~ 800

Recced because: This is absolutely heartbreaking, yet gorgeous and compelling (especially in the wake of Journey's End, though this was written long before). Ten visits Zoe, (mostly) all grown up, living her organized life in her linear, efficient world, and remembering nothing (except, maybe, dreams of things that never were). Both characters' voices are dead on, from a Doctor who knows he shouldn’t do this and yet can’t stop himself from leaving a mark, to a Zoe who admits to possibilities but hasn’t had the experience to let her free herself from her background and upbringing. This is beautiful and cold, and the last two lines are devastating.

Story: She'll Be Superb

Rating: All ages

Author's summary: Romana's improved upon the Doctor's technique by quite a bit.
Characters/pairings: Romana II/Tegan, Romana II/Rose, Romana II/Ace, Romana II/Jo, Romana II/Zoe, 9th Doctor, Romana I
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a story about a Time Lord travelling the universe in their TARDIS picking up human women. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Only it's not the Doctor it's Romana. Livii's Romana is fun, very Time Lord-y (yes, that's a word) and just great to read. Plus we see little snippets of what life is like travelling with some of the Doctor's other wonderful companions, not forgetting herself. Multi-era stories are my absolute favourite, and this is a great example of why I love them.

Story: "Homesick"
Author: Howlcastle
Rating: All ages.
Word Count: 2515
Author’s summary: "Jamie is grumpy and the Doctor thinks the only way to improve his mood is a quick trip back home."
Characters/Pairings: Jamie, Two, Zoe
Warnings: None

Recommended because: Jamie, Two and Zoe are one of the great TARDIS teams (IMNSHO), and Jamie has always been a favorite Companion. Thrown constantly into situations well outside his native frame of reference, he always kept his basic core of common sense and honest loyalty. This story is an affectionate, respectful and believable character piece focusing on Jamie's thoughts about his home, his past, and where he belongs.

Marvellous Martha Jones

I'm recommending Martha Jones-centric fics all this week but they're not all Martha/Ten.

I posted this recommendation yesterday but it seems to have disappeared, so I'm making two recommendations today to make up for it.

Story: The Wake
Author: Biichan
Author Summary: Martha visits The Wheel in the aftermath of the Cybermen.
Characters: Martha Jones, Zoe Herriot
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 940

Recced because: This is a sweet and gentle tale with a vein of humour in which Martha continues to be her usual compassionate self, despite a long lifetime of dealing with aliens:
Martha slept fitfully on the rocket ship. Space travel was not a new sensation to her–she'd been to her first alien planet while still at university and to many more since then–but it had been a much more advanced ship that had first ferried her across the void of stars. Not a human ship–which were still crude and ungainly things more than a century after the Apollo Project–but an alien vessel: a living ship that traveled through time and space at the flick of a switch and the turn of a dial.

Earth's rocket ships, she was given to understand, tended to get where they were going more often.

Marvellous Martha Jones

I'm recommending Martha Jones-centric fics all this week but they're not all Martha/Ten.

Story: On the Road
Author: Glinda
Author summary: Professor Docherty isn't the only person Martha owes flowers. She didn't always walk the earth alone.
Characters: Second Doctor, Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones, Zoe Herriot
Rating: Adult
Warnings: Femslash
Word count: 6049

This is a very strong Year That Never Was story that features an older Zoe helping Martha: she discovers friendship and love, and remembers her own earlier travels with the Doctor. Zoe's her usual scientifically curious self, and her brief interaction with the Tenth Doctor is lovely and more than a little heart-breaking. This story is beautifully written and I first read it before I'd seen any of Zoe's serials, but now I've seen some, I love it even more.

But now with the 'gun' completed, there is little for her to do, except think of her next project. A lightning strike the previous week had brought down one of the evil little robots, and the resistance had brought it to her. It sits there in its clamp on her workbench taunting her. Martha is out, telling her story to the latest slave camp, spreading hope out ahead of her, the TARDIS’ universal translator ensuring her words reach the ears of her audience in the language they know and love best. Their current resistance contact is out acting as Martha’s guide and she’d promised not to work on the creature on her own. But her curiosity is eating at her. There’s a long night ahead of her until they return and her fears will only prey on her if she has nothing to focus on alone in her lab.

Story: Make Her Some Great Princess, Six Feet High
Author: livii
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 824
Author's Summary: "Write your own story then," Zoe says. "We're in a land of fiction. We can do anything we want."
Characters/Pairings: Zoe/Victoria
Warnings: none

Recced because: it's what the companion role is all about: characters who aren't just piggybacking onto a Time Lord's wacky fun, but learning how to live 'the adventure inside of them'. Zoe, with her superbrain and sparkly arse, already knows this - so when she runs into Victoria Waterfield in The Mind Robber's Land of Fiction, she's the ideal person to help her to write her own story. Sweet, funny, and - if it doesn't sound too absurd - empowering. And did I mention the sparkly arse?

Story: Problem Child

Author's summary: Returning Jamie and Zoe to their own time lines is harder than it first seems...
Characters/Pairings: Zoe
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's about the awesomeness of Zoe. At the end of the Second Doctor era, she was supposed to have her memory wiped and be returned to her own timeline. Well, things don't quite work out the way the Time Lords wanted. Zoe keeps noticing little things about herself that aren't quite right, like the length of her fingernails and the new filling in her tooth. She soon figures out that she's lost two years of her life, and then the fun really begins. Even without knowing all the rules of the "game," she manages to outsmart the Time Lords. Seeing that it's clever, resourceful Zoe, I believed she could do it.

Story: British Summer Time
Author: nostalgia
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: They were at the beach, and they were going to have fun even if killed him.
Characters/Pairings: Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot, the Second Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's hard not to just gush about how cute this one is, but despite being cuter than anything, there's a lot more to it as well. Two, Jamie, and Zoe visit the beach, and each is drawn absolutely perfectly, with a knowing, tongue-in-cheek meta side that adds to the hilarity. The relationship is so wonderful – they're my nonsexual OT3 – the dialogue is spot-on, and throughout the Doctor frets about the Time Lords, the end of his adventure in that body coming soon, and there's a bittersweet tinge to the whole affair; the last line about broke my heart but I still had a huge smile on my face. This is a gem.

Story: Transit of Venus
Author: LilacFree
Rating: not given, but it's got to be All Ages
Author's summary: Who are you when you're not the man you used to be? Who created the Universe? And can a girl who was raised to be a human computer find happiness in a commune with a boy in a skirt and a Beatle in a gi?
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie, Zoe
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's cute and sweet, in the best possible way. First there are looks at Jamie, Zoe, and the Doctor as individuals, where each character considers an issue unique to his or her situation. Then there's group interaction that shows what an incredible team these three make. No mortal danger or running for their lives; just nice character work. And if you ever wondered where the Doctor learned Venusian aikido, here's your answer. After reading this story, my first impulse was to go and watch the Second Doctor serials I haven't yet seen.
