Rec: David and the Gorgon by Quean of Swords
Story: David and the Gorgon
Author: Quean of Swords
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 46,288
Author's Summary: It's been a year since David's girlfriend left to go travelling through time and space with the Doctor. Then one Thursday, David finds a statue that looks a little bit too much like one of his best friends. There's nothing to do but call the Doctor and hope he comes before more fall victim to a mysterious force turning young men into stone.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Original Companion, Original Companion, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (8th)
Warnings: Swearing
Recced because: Although this fic is part of a series, this is the one I read first, so it's not necessary to understand who all the original characters are to enjoy this. And the original characters are a large part of the enjoyment. They're interesting and three dimensional and make you want to know more about them. The other reason I like this fic is the plot. It's a very Doctor Who-like plot, interestingly introduced and unfolded and solved. The fic also has its amusing moments, as in the excerpt, contrasted with the sad moments.
The Doctor clicked his seat belt. He'd taken the front passenger seat, of course. "I took us to three days ago–"
"What he means," Charlie muttered very much not under her breath, "is that we missed the date. Four times. And that was the closest we could get."
"Who's telling it?" the Doctor demanded sharply.
"Did you go forward at all?" Mr. Elliott asked. "That might be helpful, to see what happens."
"He wouldn't let me off the TARDIS," Charlie complained.
"If we'd stepped off, we would have become part of events. I know I've explained that. That's basic!"
"Rule number three or four?" Charlie asked innocently.
Mr. Elliott raised an eyebrow at the rear view mirror. "Rule seven, surely. Somewhere after 'No pears.'"
