Author's Summary: Sexy is - oh, what's that word, something sad and huge and beautiful - Idris is dead, House is attacking, and the Doctor is too close to being alone in his own head. (The Doctor's Wife, from the TARDIS's perspective. One-shot.)
Characters/Pairings: The TARDIS, the Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: Written from the TARDIS's perspective during the episode The Doctor's Wife, this fic goes beyond the episode to explore the Doctor/TARDIS relationship in a way that's powerful and moving. It's difficult to write the TARDIS well, but this fic does a wonderful job of capturing her and her Thief.

Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor is suffering from hypothermia, and Rory takes charge. I love a good hurt/comfort fic, and this is an especially good one, with both Eleven and Rory firmly in character. This fic will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy, and sometimes we all need that, including the Doctor.

Story: Scytale

Author's Summary: River needs the Doctor's help to read an encrypted message.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven/River

Recced because: Okay, I freely admit this fic was written as a surprise birthday gift for me, and the author is a dear friend, but in my defense, the story makes me laugh every time I read it, and I needed a pick-me-up today. Which this story does flawlessly in a mere 500 words, including an absolutely terrible (and terribly filthy) pun directly related to the titular form of encryption. All I can say without spoiling the story is that it involves River summoning Eleven for help decrypting a message he is uniquely qualified to decrypt -- and at 500 delightful words, you owe it to yourself to find out how that decryption happens. (It's also less dirty that you'd think for an adult-rated story -- not a complaint, honest! -- so if you're uncomfortable with explicit sex but can handle a filthy joke or two, you're fine here.)

Hello, hello all!! I am PhoenixDragon and though I am rather late with it, I am your reccer for the next little while. All apologies for being late this week - but I shall try to make up for this by bringing some of the best work out there! Let me get started with this goodie...

Story: Concentration of Measure
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 227
Author's Summary: Trust is information. Information is the inverse of variance. The TARDIS must learn how to understand River Song.
Characters/Pairings: River Song, The Doctor (11th), The TARDIS
Warnings: Character Study, Introspection

Recced because: Not only is this author one of my favorites, but there is a good reason why: she can take concepts and thoughts that are beyond my ken and make them understandable. She can take ideas and facts that are not within my own realm of knowledge and make them simple to understand and grasp. She finds ways to do that with every tale - and this one is no exception. It is short (too short, in my opinion, but I feel that way about a lot of the fiction I read!) yet sweet, and even though I would love more, it says what it needs to within the words it is constructed of (my personal greed aside). This is Time and Events from the view of the TARDIS. That is a hard concept to grapple with in the first place, as we are a very linear species with a rather wonky understanding of time and events, even as they happen! Our memories aren't the best, either, to tell the truth. But here we have a character that has perfect recall (should She so choose) - in ANY event along the timelines. She is only restricted to Her (and Her Pilot's) events and timelines, but that is only because She no longer has access to the broader views and understandings of the TARDISes of Gallifrey.

But I'm getting ahead of myself here. This is a perfect little drabble about Sexy and how She 'sees'. What she CAN see and what She chooses to remember (whether it be the future or the past). I recommend anything from this author. But I'll give you this fic to jump off with.

Just a mere taste to get you going... )

I do hope you enjoy her work as much as I have! Be sure to leave her a review telling her so! And I shall be reccing another beauty here very soon...

Author's Summary: “Greetings human scum,” the person-thing barked in a booming, nasally voice. “I have come to rest upon your offspring."
Characters/Pairings: Craig Owens, Strax, The Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: This story is not only clever, but also very entertaining, and I really enjoyed the focus on side characters like Craig and Strax with the Doctor more of a presence in the background. Great job to the author for this cute idea of bringing these characters together. Through the whole fic you almost have crazy expectations for the event, and you can feel Craig's anxiety on the matter, but I found the ending very satisfying and perfect. I definitely wanted to rec this last because it's a nice, light-hearted and funny piece that I know you'll enjoy!

Story: Burn Now (Or Die A Traitor's Death)
Author: Inkfire
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2092
Author's Summary: Before his death, the Doctor makes the hardest sacrifice. AU!verse, the Doctor destroys the TARDIS.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (11th), The TARDIS
Warnings: Alternate Universe, Angst, Character Study, Drama, Horror, Introspection, Standalone

Recced because: Well, first of all, this author is amazing. The images and feelings she paints with words can leave a lingering, lasting impression - and even if they can be a lot to take in and grapple with - they always leave you wanting more.

This tale is certainly no different.

It is an alternate universe, where the Doctor feels he has no choice but to remove his TARDIS from the hands of those who would harm Her or use Her for evil ends, by doing something equally as terrible. Nearing his own end and terrified and angry, he makes a choice that will haunt him for the few hours he has left. It is utterly, wholly believable. Suffocatingly dark. And endlessly sorrowful. A masterpiece in writing, in alternate timelines and it touches on the darkness the Doctor carries within that generally does not manifest on such levels...though he is perfectly capable of such. A marvelous read. One that you will carry with you. And even as it leaves you sad and haunted, you will find yourself searching her works for more brilliant words and tales! But I do not expect you to read just based on my recommendation (though you should), so a taste is in order, yes?

Expertly woven through time and space, this fic shows us their first meetings, the power of friendship, and the importance of being in the right place at the right time.

Story: Welcome to the House!
Author: Masterpwn
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 31896
Author's Summary: Multiple people who have never met each other are selected by a secret organization for unknown reasons and forced to survive in the most terrible place they have ever been in full of traps and monsters. It will take their best to stay alive and find out the truth, but the house will try everything to kill them. Is escape even possible? Will anyone even survive this? 10 go in, 1 comes out... Or so they say.
Characters/Pairing: Amy Pond, Clara Oswald, Donna Noble, Rose Tyler, River Song, Martha Jones, Rory Williams, the 9th Doctor, the 10th Doctor, the 11th Doctor
Warnings: Explicit violence, swearing, several major character deaths

As I've said before, I love a good AU, and this story fits the bill. Perhaps my favorite thing about it though is that we get a whole mess of characters who never got a chance to interact in canon working together towards a common goal. This story is full of surprises, twists, and turns-I never knew what to expect next, which is part of why I loved it so much. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

Author's Summary: We move on, even when we don't want to.
Characters/Pairing:Eleventh Doctor, Donna Noble, Shaun Temple
Warnings: None

The Doctor doesn't deal with loss easily. We saw that in the aftermath of Doomsday, and again after Journey's End. By all accounts, you could say Ten went a bit off the rails after he lost Donna, and while it's never really talked about in explicit detail in canon, I imagine that what happened to her would be the sort of thing to haunt him, and that he would need to reassure himself that she's okay. This short little ficlet explores that idea, as Eleven sneaks a peek at Donna and her family on her 45th birthday. Hold on to your feels!

Here's a good long adventure for the weekend :)

Title: The Empath Cell
Author: Megaceryle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 53007
Author's Summary:Something is wrong in Leadworth: Amy remembers a trip that never happened, and a local man has won the lottery and aged forty years instantly. The Doctor's search for answers leads him across the universe to an ancient civilization of empaths, who may be harboring a secret about a Time Lord who came before.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy, Rory, OCs
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: I always love a good sprawling adventure, and this one is intriguing. It takes a while to build, and doesn't end up where you would expect. It explores the link between the Doctor and the TARDIS and the consequences of meddling with their shared psyche. It doesn't rely on particularly flowery language or style to tell the story, rather its understated prose lets the characters, plot, and world-building take its time and speak for itself. It introduces a range of cool new characters that are all three dimensional and not necessarily what they seem to be at first, that I want to know more about what happens to them after the ending credits. The range of new characters that are given enough room to flesh out beyond what you would expect, along with the mystery, danger and intrigue make this story read like a classic Eighth Doctor Adventure novel, and though the author's Eleven is mad and clever as ever, I can definitely see echoes of Eight in him as well.

Title: Rescue Mission
Author: Liz Rambler
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4265
Author's Summary: The Eleventh Doctor is on his farewell tour and decides to take care of a few loose ends while he's at it. First on his list: Check on Peri.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Peri Brown, King Yrcanos
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: If you know me, you know I have a soft spot for Peri. I met her mostly through the Big Finish audio adventures with both Five and Six, and when I finally got around to watching Mindwarp I was... well, less than impressed on the send-off she got on the show. This story takes the improbable "happy ending" that Peri got and treats it exactly as it should be treated... as a rescue mission. Not only that, it's Eleven's rescue mission, and I also have a huge soft spot for Eleven. This story is a snappy, quick-talking adventure, equal parts forthright and funny, with just enough of a hint of real danger and more complex emotions underlying everything to keep it away from pure farce or crackfic. The dialogue and character voices are fantastic and lucky for us Eleven and Peri fans, it seems it may be the beginning of a series. So I say, go read it and encourage this lovely new Teaspoon author :)

Author's Summary: It seems like an eternity to her before he spins on his heel and walks away, leaving her alone on her side of the glass. She will soon discover that in reality, eternity is so much longer.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Eleventh Doctor, Daughter of Mine

Recced because: No matter whether you feel the Tenth Doctor's punishment of the Family of Blood was justified, you'll want to read this unusual story about Daughter of Mine's life in the mirror: her bitterness, her resentment, her stubbornness, and ultimately – in a way – her redemption. Daughter of Mine's anger boils off the page, but as I said in the comment I left when the story was posted, it's a dark tale, but a sympathetic one as well. It's also a very worthy debut for this author on [livejournal.com profile] calufrax.

Recced because: For my last rec, I wanted to rec something in the spirit of Christmas and this year's Christmas special, "The Husbands of River Song." I decided upon this fic, told from a viewpoint of a woman who overhears the Doctor and River arguing about capturing something. The woman later finds out the creature the Doctor and River are hunting is targeting her son. The story moves quickly and has equal parts action, suspense, and comedic squabbling between the Doctor and River.

Ahoy there, Who fanfictioneers! As always when I begin a new stint reccing here on [livejournal.com profile] calufrax, I am struck by how little time at all it seems since last time I did this, and how long it in fact was. Tempus fugit and all that. Well, without further ado, allow me to kick off this round of recommendation with something of a rare gem:

Story: Bounce
Author: Nancy Brown
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5,470
Author's Summary: A mysterious device affects the lives of the Doctor and his friends.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Canton Everett Delaware III, Jenny Flint, Madame Vastra, Rory Williams, Strax, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: None, apart from some references to Victorian-era murders

Recced because: Well, full disclosure, this was written in response to one of my prompts in the EleventyFest ficathon, way back in 2013. When I gave the prompt, though, I don't think I was expecting it to elicit anything as seriously good as this bit of prime Eleven-era fic. This is the fic I was going to rec last time around before being distracted, magpie-like, by another story by the same author, but this time I'm making very sure indeed to put this one front and centre.

The story follows the trail of a strange, and possibly deadly, presumably alien device across three time periods, and with three groups of investigators. In the Victorian era, Madame Vastra, her wife Jenny and the inimitable Strax are called in by Scotland Yard to consult in a case of multiple murders. Meanwhile in the late 1960s, G-Man Canton Everett Delaware III looks into a slew of missing persons against the backdrop of the countercultural anti-war movement and the Nixon administration. And finally in futuristic Scotland, the Doctor and the Ponds are drawn to a museum of extraterrestrial curiosities. The skill with which the author weaves these various strands together to tell a single story, using time travel pleasingly to tie the plot together, is only one of the several great things about this piece.

I especially enjoy the way the different eras each have their own distinctive style, from the Sherlockian stylings of Vastra and Jenny's nineteenth century adventures to the hardboiled inner monologue that drives Canton's sections (and I don't think you have to find him as cool a character as I do to really dig those parts). As with those of this author's other works that I have read, it is the characterisation and the voices that I find most compelling about this. Canton's private-eye-esque patter aside, the Doctor-Amy-Rory team TARDIS (one of my favourite of all time) really shine here, and even Strax gets one excellent, and very Strax-like, exchange.

I urge you - don't walk, (metaphorically) run over to the Teaspoon and read this one, and please be sure to tell the author how much you liked it.

Characters: Eleventh Doctor, The Master (Ainley)
Author's summary: Sick at hearts, he'd said.
Warnings: none

Recced because: This short fic is a moving vignette of a rare moment of genuine sympathy from the Master toward the Doctor. Their simple dialogue, and the Master's thought process behind it, are perfectly balanced to show the conflicting claims of the old friendship & the long estrangement between the two of them. The moment of almost connection being made possible only when both feel they have nothing left makes it all the more heartbreaking & poignant. A beautifully understated examination of the Doctor & the Master's 'best enemies' relationship. :)

It’s vivid, sharp, poetic – utterly gorgeous – as the Doctor can’t help seeing the significance of a colour – red. Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Canton Everett Delaware III, Jenny Flint, Madame Vastra, River Song, Rory Williams, The Doctor (11th), plus Anthony Williams and OCs
Warnings: None

Recced because: I was actually planning to rec another fic by this author, and I came across this more or less at random while looking for the other one on her Teaspoon page yesterday...and loved it. And couldn't believe it had no reviews and decided the best way of remedying that with a vengeance was to get it out here on Calufrax. So win/win for me - I get to rec this magnificent fic and still have one in the hole for my next reccing stint! :D

In all seriousness, though, this is a great fic, written with excellent characterisation and just common sense, decency and humanity. You know, like the best fics are. The fact that it also ticks quite a few of my fannish boxes as regards the tail end of the Eleven era (the Capaldinator is obviously brilliant, but I'm unashamed to say Eleven remains "my" NuWho Doctor) certainly doesn't hurt either. I've made no secret of the fact that I was, and am, seriously dissatisfied with the ending Amy and Rory got in The Angels Take Manhattan, not even because of their fates but mainly because of the slapdash way it was all plotted and the way we were expected to swallow rl attempts to plaster over those plot holes by authorial "word of god", so this sort of semi-fix-it (it doesn't actually fix it, but makes its point by illustrating one of the several blatantly obvious ways that it could be fixed) will always hold a certain appeal for me. The fact that it's wise-guy G-Man Canton Everett Delaware III, still one of my all-time favourite one-shot Who guest characters, who gets to be the main instrument of that sort-of-fix-it is, for me, the shiny cherry on top.

The author gives Canton an OC boyfriend, fittingly also a smart-mouthed hard-boiled cop type, who is also the everyman observer of the Doctor's strange world, as they go about reuniting Canton, the Paternoster Row crew, Amy and Rory and their adopted son Anthony, and eventually River and Eleven himself, and even get a bit of fraught adventure along the way. Throughout, we are reminded deftly and thought-provokingly of the difficulties and dangers facing same-sex relationships over the ages, with Vastra and Jenny's relationship also portrayed with great perceptiveness and sensitivity. I think the main thing I like about this, though, is the obvious love for the diverse cast of characters; even the ones that don't get that many lines (Eleven, actually) are vividly portrayed; as I often say of fanfic I find has particularly true-to-life characterisations, you really can hear the voices as you read it.

So get over there and see what you think, and please leave some words of appreciation for the author...!

Story: Backwards the Clock Goes Ticking
Author: Inkfire
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 511 words
Author's Summary: Sunlight burns and water gleams, and River Song stands suspended. Lake Silencio, twice.
Characters/Pairings: River Song, the Eleventh Doctor
Warnings:None

Recced because: I have a penchant for short, emotionally powerful fics and this one fits the bill beautifully. River Song is one of my favourite characters and I’m fascinated by her fragmented and tragic life. And when I read this story I could feel the intensity of the heat and River’s sense of helplessness.

Story: Kiss the Cook
Author: IrishVampire13
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2189
Author's Summary: "Please tell me these are actual, proper chicken eggs," Rory told the Doctor, fishing a carton out of the refrigerator. "Earth chicken eggs. I don't want to crack one of these things open and have to fight off a fire-breathing Venusian quail, or something!"
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, River Song, Rory Williams, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: From the Author's Note: " A tiny little smidge of light naughtiness, hardly worth upping the rating for."

Recced because: This fic was posted only a few days ago and it already got my attention. A fun slice of life moment with the Eleventh Doctor and his companions (and cookies!) that is well-written and perfectly captures this TARDIS team.

Story: Symmetry
Author: JaneTurenne
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 985
Author's Summary: The Doctor has always expected to lose River, but he never expects to find her.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor/River Song
Warnings: None.

Recced because: This is a really fantastic and short piece about Eleven and River's relationship, how they meet out of order, and then their moments perfectly coming together in canon. I think the author has the voices down solidly too, and the ending is lovely and hopeful.

Story: Through and Through
Author: wuhdemah
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 790
Author's Summary: The cracks in the skin of the universe were open; it shouldn't have been surprising that the fabric between his universe and hers had also come undone.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor/Rose Tyler
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I loved this because I am a sucker for Eleven seeing Rose Tyler again, and this short little fic hit the spot. It's fluffy and cute with just a bit of light romance, but I think the best thing about it is Rose taking in the Doctor as Eleven, and despite that, the way they feel about each other doesn't seem to change much. Both characters are wonderfully portrayed in this meeting and I think it's a good way to get them together for a short piece.

Author: betawho
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 302
Author's Summary: Sometimes the best and worst parts of your life are the same thing.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor/River Song
Warnings: None

Recced because: I always wait eagerly for this author's fics, and I am never let down when they arrive. This short gem is every bit as sexy-fun-cute as Eleven and River themselves.

Story: Can't Run from Me
Author: fate_incomplete
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 920
Author's Summary: The one thing he can't run from is himself.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams
Warnings: Slightly scary

Recced because: I've developed a fascination for stories featuring psychological horror, and this very aptly fits the bill! If you've a taste for that sort of thing, then you're very much in luck! ^.^

Title: many's the time i ran with you down
Author: saywheeeee
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2898
Author's Summary: Amy and the Doctor visit Aularind. Based off a scene in "crowns of snow." Winner of Challenge #2 at big_jumps.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven, Amy. Mild Eleven/Amy or friendship
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: I had forgotten how beautiful and poetic this story was. That means that I got to re-read and rediscover it. The world-building is beautiful, the characters and settings vibrant and alive, and the ending is a bittersweet reminder of how the Doctor lives from one moment to another, rarely looking back.

Title: The Existing Scheme of Things
Author: Culumacilinte
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 6835
Author's Summary: In which the TARDIS acquires two more passengers, and there are Antarctic explorers in love. And a little bit of altering the course of history.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven, Amy Pond
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: It's a fantastic historical adventure about the Terra Nova Expedition of the Antarctic in the early 1900s, a could-be-an-episode story with the moral and ethical arguments of when and why the time stream should stay fixed or can be altered. The secondary characters really shine. Not being a history buff, I did not know anything about the expedition before reading the story, but the author did a great job of telling both the history and the Doctor Who perspective in a seamless manner. It is a quick read for such a complete and well-written adventure tale. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon.

Hello [livejournal.com profile] calufrax! I am your recc-er for the next two weeks! And as penance for not getting my first rec out until Wednesday, here is a great long adventure story.

Title: Age of Gold
Author: James Stoker
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 30297
Author's Summary: The Doctor takes an incredible risk to tick off something on his bucket list, and unwittingly sets off a chain of events which will change the fortunes of millions of children.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Clara Oswald
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: This is a twisty turning adventure written in a charmingly light and often humorous style that sometimes belies the complexity of the world building and the gravitas of the situations that unfold. With Eleven and Clara at the center of a new world of its own different original characters, mysteries, villains, and unfolding significance in the greater Doctor Who universe, this story reminds me very much of something we might see in a classic Fourth or Seventh era serial, but updated and brilliantly characterized so that both Eleven and Clara shine. Go take an afternoon and read it! But don't be disarmed by the style; you really do have to pay attention to all of the details to get the full effect of the storytelling.

Author's Summary: River Song, time, stories and choices.

Story: Reputation to Uphold
Author: The_Bookkeeper
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 100
Author's Summary: They think he’s not him. It’s freedom, of a sort. Set during The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: I used to not like drabbles, and then I realized it was because I hadn't been reading the right drabbles. Done well, a drabble is like a scalpel in the hands of a skilled surgeon -- precise and incredibly powerful. This drabble, about the Eleventh Doctor during "Rebel Flesh / Almost People," is done extremely well. Go read it.
