Hello! I’m x_los here and on Teaspoon. I haven’t rec’d here before, and I solemnly swear I will lj-cut the many teal deers I have brought along with me.

Story: Kept Man
Author: Aralias
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 30953 words
Author's Summary: In Scream of the Shalka, REG!Doctor (the ninth Doctor who almost was) was seen travelling round the universe with a robotic Master for no apparent reason. The ninth Doctor (who actually was) has a much better reason for travelling with a robotic Master, given that his entire race are dead. This fic assumes that he was and that the Master just kept out of sight so as not to alarm anyone.
Characters: Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Mickey Smith, Professor Yana, Rose Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (9th), The Master (Jacobi), The Master (Other), The Master (Simm)
Pairings: Shalka!Master/Nine, Shalka!Master/Ten, Doctor/Master generally implied
Warnings: Explicit sex, swearing (goodness, there’s a warning for that? Huh.)

Recced because:

A little about the author. )

Kept Man is relatively early but essential work from an essential writer in Doctor/Master and, really, the fandom. This fic tracks the first three series of the reboot, imagining that all along, an android version of the Master, built by the Doctor, lives in the TARDIS, preferring not to interact with the Doctor’s various human companions (a plot device that pulls on Scream of the Shalka’s presentation of the Doctor and an android Master voiced by Jacobi living together). It slots neatly into the show as we know it, but not in a facile, consequence-free ‘episode coda’ kind of way. ‘The Doctor keeps the Master on the TARDIS after the events on the Valiant’ is a big subgenre of Doctor/Master fic (especially the fic that came right after s3) (Kept Man is also probably a little influenced by Ariastar’s generally well-regarded Ten/Simm!Master alternate series—alternate series 4 and 5 are another sort of sub genre.). Aralias is engaging with that here, but pulling the trend/trope in directions that chime with her overall interests and sensibilities.

A little about why this fic is compelling and important. )

Story: Loose Sand
Author: schildkroet
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2687
Author's Summary: Torchwood is facing a problem and Jack doesn't want to call the Doctor for help. Martha does so anyway.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, Mickey Smith, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones
Warnings: None

Recced because: This fic is like the best of Twilight Zone in the way it quietly unfolds, starting with a mystery -- why doesn't Jack want to call on the Doctor for help? -- and then turning on a simple, horrifying reveal. The story was written back in 2008, so it's AU now, but perhaps that just means this happened in an alternate timeline (something else both Doctor Who and Twilight Zone have in common).

Getting the last one in under the wire! I was planning to only rec crossovers this week, but then I found this fic and I couldn’t not rec it. So the last one breaks the mold. Thanks for having me, all, and to all a good night!

Story: And Indeed There Will Be Time
Author: kaydee_falls
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 42816
Author's Summary: In 1919, Harriet Derbyshire was killed while investigating the disappearance of Torchwood Four in Dublin. In 2009, UNIT pulls a dying man out of the Irish Sea with a one-word message: Torchwood. Martha joins up with Jack's team in Cardiff to track down the errant branch of the organization -- before a time-traveling race of aliens can change the course of history as we know it. (Jack/Ianto + team)
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Ianto, Donna Noble, Gwen Cooper, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, UNIT
Warnings:

Recced because: I love a good twisty time travel mystery, and this fic delivers on all counts. The Jack/Ianto pairing is so background you’ll hardly notice it, so don’t come into the fic expecting romance; this is all action adventure time travel plot mystery, all the time. Well-drawn OCs, a richly realized setting, a fantastic mystery, and insanely good writing – you’ll be up late reading it, just as I was!

Story: Strings Attached
Author: [livejournal.com profile] beshter
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 80,918 (and counting)
Author's Summary: Pete Tyler thought he was agreeing to making his entire life better. Sometimes gifts come with strings attached. When his entire life is turned upside down, fate gives him a second chance at pulling it together.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler (both universes), Pete Tyler (Pete’s world), Mickey Smith, Rose Tyler, the Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None by author (character death mentioned)
Recced because: I’m taking a chance by rec’ing this,  because it’s unfinished. However, there are 22 chapters, which gives you plenty to chew on until the final chapters come — and the author appears to have a schedule, which means this fascinating story should be completed. I certainly hope so, because this tackles one of the fascinating untold stories in the Whoniverse; how did the Pete Tyler of Pete’s World come to be so different from the lovable, but unsuccessful Pete Tyler of our world? [livejournal.com profile] beshter has a knack I love in writers: they build a believable world, they create characters who act believably, and they act only on the information they know. We, as readers, know what’s happening and why, but the writer’s skill is such that we want to watch this Pete (always one of my favorite characters) think his way through his good fortune, through invasion, through losing one Jackie and into loving a new Jackie.

Story: It's Such a Feeling
Author: stoprobbers
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2,592
Author's Summary: Oh, now I’ll tell you something I think you’ll understand.
Characters/Pairings: Harriet Jones, Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: n/a
Recced because: My first Doctor was the Ninth Doctor, and so when he regenerated and the Tenth Doctor took over, I sympathized with Rose's hesitance in the The Christmas Invasion. I was not sure I was ready for this interloper. He seemed so different, and I wasn't convinced he would be as good as Nine had been. By the end of the episode, however, I, like Rose, had been won over. This is a story filling in the Doctor's story in The Christmas Invasion, and it's both about the Doctor himself and the kind of man he is and how Rose comes to see that he is still the same man. In a change from The Christmas Invasion, however, this is entirely from the Doctor's perspective rather than from Rose's. The author here captures the Doctor's cadence just right, in what I might describe as poetic rambling.

Story: Where To Next?
Author: jinxed_wood
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1507
Author's Summary: Martha isn't really sure she believes in happy ever afters.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Mickey Smith
Warnings: Spoilers for The End of Time.

Recced because: I love fic that fills in the gaps in-between episodes, especially (as in this case) some big changes happen, and also fics that follow up with the companions after their official story is over. This fic does both, and in an elegant and concise manner that few fics manage. When I read this fic, it immediately became my head-canon for what must have happened. Although Martha and Mickey have just met here, it becomes clear (without having to be said directly) why they make sense together. But the fic isn't just about how Martha and Mickey ended up together; it's also about Martha finding her own way, on her own terms.

Story: Faces and Names
Author: Beer Good
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1146
Author's Summary: You can change your name, you can change your face, but can you change who you are? During a brief stop-over, a jealous Mickey tries to find out the Doctor's name, only to find out the hard way why it's a good idea to keep your name to yourself, as an old antagonist turns out not to be who we think he is. Hitch-hiker's Guide crossover.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Mickey Smith, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I love crossovers, and this one's a nice logical explanation of why the Doctor keeps his name a secret, with a little twist in the tail.

Author's Summary: Rose always did have a thing for dangerous older men. A Pete's World crack!fic.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jake Simmonds, the Tenth Doctor, the Duplicate Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: I love a good crack!fic, and this one is especially noteworthy because its humor isn't silly, it's deadpan -- a trick that I didn't realize could even be pulled off in a fic, let alone pulled off as well as it is done here. Rose Tyler becomes a vampire between "Doomsday" and "Journey's End," and if that's not cracky enough for you, plenty of vampire tropes get skewered here, too. (Did I mention that I also love fics that skewer tropes?)

Story: Making It Stranger
Author: Bad_Dickens
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 26,771
Author's Summary: The Doctor arrives in Arkham Asylum while Jack Harkness meets Batman. Cardiff must brace itself for a visit from the Clown Prince of Crime. A Batman/Nolan!verse cross over with Doctor Who and Torchwood.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), the survivors of Torchwood S2 (Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Captain Jack Harkness), Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, plus crossover characters.
Warnings: Some violence, both physical and psychological and all of the attendant creepiness and tastelessness you'd expect from The Dark Knight version of the Joker.

Recced because: Who doesn't like a good crossover? Well, some people probably don't, but I'm not one of those people. I love a good crossover, and this is a very good crossover indeed.

Cast your minds back to the distant, heady days of 2008. We'd just picked our jaws up off the floor, for a variety of reasons, after watching Journey's End. We still had the festive rollercoaster thrill-ride that was The Next Doctor to come in a few months' time. How to kill some time while we waited? Well, the announcement that David Tennant would be leaving the role of the Doctor, eventually, and the attendant media scrum did that to an extent, but before that a lot of us, in the UK at least, went to the cinema and watched... Mama Mia. Not me, though - I was in the screen next door watching The Dark Knight and loving it.

This was before it made a squillion dollars at the box office and the fan backlash set in, before last year's rather Marmite-ish conclusion to the Nolan Bat-trilogy muddied the waters still further. At the time, TDK was the hot ticket (it had Eric Roberts from the Eight TV Movie in it!) and the late Heath Ledger's nightmarish Joker was burning up the screen just like Jack Nicholson's had back in 1989 (scarily, I can remember the hype around that one when it came out too). Good stuff. Even better, though, when my enthusiasm for the film and its world was still at its height, this excellent crossover fic was posted to the Teaspoon. I remember following it avidly, checking every day for updates, and generally lapping it up.

Essentially, this story takes the Batman and his rogues' gallery from the Christopher Nolan films and, via a bit of Rift-related jiggery-pokery throws them up against the Tenth Doctor and Captain Jack's much-depleted Torchwood Three team, with Mickey and Martha thrown in for good measure. Everybody's in-character, and gets nice character moments to boot, but it's also all hung on a good, well-plotted story in which everybody gets things to do and a chance to shine. The Joker is, as you would expect, a force of nature, using the villainous plot-armour that is basically his non-super superpower to throw a spanner into our heroes' works and put them through the wringer. And, to be honest, who doesn't think the idea of the Joker versus a Dalek is a good idea? Oh, right. Well, I do.

All this and Weevils too! Seriously, even if you're not a Batman fan, or a fan of the Nolan/Bale movies, go and read this just for the Who and Torchwood characters and their reactions to the off-the-wall situation. You won't regret it. And when you're finished, please leave your words of appreciation for the author.

Author's Summary: It's weightless, on the cusp; thrilling, too, waiting for gravity to take effect and fall, fall, fall
Genre: Fluff, Het, Humor, PWP, Romance
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Rose, Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith

Recced because:
I'm sensing a theme for this rec-period.

Sex.

To quote the lovely movie The Holiday: "Sex makes everything more complicated. Even not having it, because the not having it... makes it complicated." Don't the Doctor Who shippers know this well!

In this fic, however, Rose and the Doctor have sex. It details their first time, in great detail, and it's one of those fics that actually gets sex, how it works and how it's messy and complicated and not all sunshine and roses. And also that it's fun. I think so many fic writers forget that not all sex is earth-shattering, but that it doesn't mean it's not good. And people enjoy it because it's fun, not because it's perfect.

One of my pet peeves is where people who sleep with each other don't talk. Communication people! And Rose and the Doctor communicate here, and show that communication improves sex. I love to see that in fic.

Sorry for the ramble. Just read the fic and give the author some love!

Warnings: n/a

Recced because: To round off the week, a return to the multi-era ensemble cast - just look at that list of characters!  Full disclosure requires me to say that the author is one of my friends, but this is one of those stories that I'd have to admit to loving were it written by my worst enemy.  Plot takes a backseat to a beautifully-written interlude of friendships and nostalgia that still manages to feel fresh, and the interactions between the Doctor's former companions and friends are delightfully genuine.  I particularly love the portrayal of Amy, who bounces around full of teasing energy but clearly holds a great deal of affection for the Doctor - and, of course, the centre of the story is the eternal relationship between the Doctor and Sarah, which is dealt with in a sensitive and nuanced manner.  It really is one of my favourite stories, and one that reminds me just why I love the show so much.

Thank you for having me for the week, guys, and if you enjoy the recs then don't forget to go and tell the authors all about it!

Recced because: Oh, this is a beautiful, clever piece. I love it when an author can so successfully place the canon of one story into the canon of the other and make it seem like they were made for each other. The chemistry between the characters makes it obvious who everyone is and why, and it works so well. It is also, absolutely, a barrel of laughs. I was giggling from start to finish. Hands on my side stitches, lemme tell you. Not to mention it's just plain well-written, structure and grammar wise. And then somewhere... it grows dizzy. Disorientating. The ending was the biggest surprise ever, given the start. A brilliant way to end the recs and a reminder that not all is as it seems...

Hello there! My name is Lamia, and I'll be your reccer for the week! Warnings: Swearing, action

Recced because: This is one author that I go back to over and over again. Seriously! Go give her love. That said, the reason I chose this fic in particular is because of the range of things it covers that just ring 'Doctor Who' in my books. Martha being awesome (another reason is because of her qualification this week in [livejournal.com profile] f_march_madness), the Doctor not being perfect, people being people and difficult and just... real. And warm. It's got laughs, and it's got bits that really take out your heart and stamp on it, but it's also got heart, and really, that's what a fic should be all about... It's a long one to start, but well worth the time to sit down, maybe with a cup of tea, and drink it all in.

Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Original Companion, Original Companion, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (8th)

Recced because: Although this fic is part of a series, this is the one I read first, so it's not necessary to understand who all the original characters are to enjoy this. And the original characters are a large part of the enjoyment. They're interesting and three dimensional and make you want to know more about them. The other reason I like this fic is the plot. It's a very Doctor Who-like plot, interestingly introduced and unfolded and solved. The fic also has its amusing moments, as in the excerpt, contrasted with the sad moments.

Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Amy Pond, Jack Harkness, Mickey Smith, Rory Williams, Tenth Doctor, Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: Sexual assault, violence, general YTNW-stuff.

Recced because: I mentioned earlier this week that I feel Martha was owed so much more by the Doctor for what she was through. I'm quite fond of fics where the Doctor is faced with all the horrors Martha that happened to her in his name, and Hallucinations is an amazing example of that genre. It's timey-wimey and a bit confusing and heartbreaking and a very realistic take of the world under Harold Saxon's rule. The splash of Eleven, Amy and Rory is a bitter-sweet addition.

This is a cracktacular romp through the Superman mythos with Rose as our heroine: she works at the Daily Planet with Lois, she fights crime, and she meets a skinny stranger with beeping devices who also has a secret alien identity. The story is both hilarious and, at the end, deeply touching. It also features a terrific cameo from Mickey, and with lines like “I’m an intrepid girl reporter. I know all sorts of things.”, how can you go wrong?

Story: Busy Day
Author: Navaan
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1869
Author's Summary: Jack watches himself be in love and adventuring in Cardiff. Set during the episode Boom Town of DW and before TW season one (slight Doctor/Jack or Doctor/Rose/Jack, however you want to read it)
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Mickey Smith, Rose Tyler, Suzie Costello, The Doctor (9th), Toshiko Sato
Warnings: None

Recced because: There are several canon episodes where it's logical that characters should meet their younger selves. But that's a paradox, and needs to be avoided at all costs. Here Jack Harkness is forced to sit and watch his younger self without intervening.

Excerpt: It was one of those days Jack wanted to be anything but the head of his own little Torchwood Three. There had been an increase in rift spikes recently and there had been some sightings of Weevils outside of Cardiff. There hadn't been time for rest in days.

And at the moment he still had some trouble recruiting. And he supposed it had something to do with the new leader of Torchwood One. The overambitious Yvonne Hartman had made it clear that she saw everything that came out of the rift as the property of Torchwood One and obviously he had to tread carefully with her. That left him with deciding which information was secure enough to be passed on and what should never leave the confines of his own Torchwood facilities without attracting her attention. All the hushing up grated on his nerves. More than usual anyway.

His mood hadn't gotten any better over the week when he followed the news and remembered that he would have to do something that he really did not like to do at all: He would have to lie to his employees, would have to cover up the evidence and last but not least would have to stay put.

“Are you kidding me, Jack?” Suzie cried. She was waving a newspaper in front of his face. Toshiko was sitting at one of her computer screens, but was watching the argument interestedly. “You want us to go to Bristol to check the Weevil incident? And you are not going to do anything about this nuclear power plant being built right on top of us? On top of the rift!?”

Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith, Other Character(s), Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (8th)
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: This is the first story in one of my all time favorite series. It is the story that first introduced me to the idea of--and made me fall in love with--the Eighth Doctor/Rose pairing. The growth of their relationship--and the Doctor going through all sorts of assumptions and feelings along the way--is beautifully portrayed. So too is the underlying tension that comes with loving a Time Lord (and being a Time Lord in love) across multiple regenerations. I love the idea of a timeless love--a love that exists on some core level: soul mates. And the romantic in me loves the idea the the Doctor and Rose love each across all time and in all forms.

It's well written, with wonderful characterizations and raw emotions. It's a believable journey; Rose knows him, but he doesn't know her, and though their courtship is whirlwind, it isn't without its difficulties. Sometimes it's funny, and sometimes it's a beautiful kind of sad--the kind of sad that only comes from knowing that there's a ticking time bomb on their relationship. Still, there's a light at the end of the tunnel; the series as a whole is about Rose's journey back to the Tenth Doctor, and her love for all the other versions of him she meets and re-meets along the way. The Eighth Doctor is the beginning, but he isn't the end--and that's what makes it all the more magical.

It's the beautiful beginning of an epic tale, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have!

(I'm rereading it at the moment - worth every step of the way.)

So what makes this fic so captivating? There is more Doctor!Whump out there in which he (nearly) dies [keeping open the outcome so as not to spoil you guys], after all, and those are not as epically long as this fic. There are several reasons.
One is that Unslinky's characterisation is amazing. Unslinky knows how people work, what makes them tick, what makes them laugh, and she manages to write the dilemmas that come with being/caring for a dying alien, the last of his kind, in a way that is incredibly realistic. There are no good or bad guys in this story - everyone has two sides. There will be moments when you really hate a particular character (at least I did), but later that will always be put into perspective because the reasons for their behaviour are revealed and you suddenly understand that even though sometimes people say or do things that make you want to punch them in the face, they're not all bad. Every story has two sides and nothing is ever only black or only white.
That brings me to my second reason: realism. The Doctor is suffering from a degenerating disease, which will kill him if nothing is done, and a lot of people (see character list and then some) get involved. That means there are a lot of angles to be written, a lot of point of views, tensions, opinions - not to mention that an illness as seriously as the one from which the Doctor suffers in this story simply can't be fixed in two or three chapters. The illness is described very naturally, over a period of time, and Unslinky gives us readers wonderful medical details and descriptions without making it too brainy too understand - and then of course there is also the psychological side. The Doctor has to accept that he is ill and that he needs help, he bonds to people in entirely new ways, but the other characters are also affected - they have doubts, are hurt, hope, work, scream, cry (everything you might expect of someone with a close friend who is dying). Rather than rush through events towards a happy ending [or not!], Unslinky isn't afraid of putting the main storyline on hold to be introspective or have a flashback. This doesn't impede the story at all, however, but rather adds to it, shaping the characters and making them incredibly real.
In the end, this didn't feel like a story, but rather as a journey. It has made me look at some characters in an entirely new way and by the time I got to the end I didn't think 'oof, I've finally read it', but rather 'why is this over already?'.

Ending my week on a light-hearted note - hope you've enjoyed my selections.

Story: Are you dead or just glad to see me?
Author: jinxed_wood
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 896
Author's Summary: Another day at the office for Smith & Jones.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Mickey Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because:
I may have mentioned I like crossovers. This one's a beautiful Highlander cross and does real justice to both fandoms, and does it with style. You don't have to know much about Highlander to enjoy it. Just revel in the extent to which Mickey takes everything in his stride - he's come a LONG way!

A small sample )

Posted using Livejournal's scheduled post thingy, since I may be off line on Sunday. Hopefully nothing will go wrong go wrong go wrong go wrong...

Here’s the last rec of the week. a Doctor Who/Torchwood crossover.

Story: Pizza and Planets
Author: Eledhwen
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 7365
Author's Summary: When the Doctor arrives in Cardiff, horizons are expanded. Spoilers for DW S4 and TW S2, plus speculative casting spoilers for TW S3.
Characters/Pairings: Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, The Tenth Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: I wish we had seen more interaction between Torchwood 3 and the Doctor.  In this (mostly) lighthearted story, the Tenth Doctor drops by the Cardiff Hub after the events of “Journey’s End”.  There are moments of sadness, as when the Doctor has to explain what happened to Rose and Donna, but also of humor and affection.

Story: Mockingbird
Author: icebluenothing
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 14754
Author's Summary: Rose was convinced -- even though he looked nothing like the man she'd met, this new man was still the Doctor. Unless it was all a lie.
Characters/Pairings: Mickey Smith, Rose Tyler, the Doctor (ninth and tenth)
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is a plotty, suspenseful adventure.  That's one reason to read it.  It's also a story that deals with the utter weirdness of regeneration.  One thing that always rang a little false to me, in the classic series, is how well human beings adjusted to the fact that a very good friend had just turned into someone else—not just in face and body, but in all his personal quirks as well.  Rose's freakout on the subject seemed quite reasonable to me.  Regeneration isn't something that human beings are particularly prepared to cope with.

This story explores what would happen if Rose learned that everything that happened for the past few months of her life was a lie.  Or maybe that's the lie—she has no way to tell.  Her confusion and her fear are utterly believable, and quite compelling.  It's well-written, complex, and ends with a beautiful, poignant touch.  Seriously, it's good.  Go read it.

Story: The War of the Roses
Author: Nancy Brown
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4735
Author's Summary: In which a new flower shop opens across the street from Bloomin' Lovely, Gita's life becomes very strange, and a planetary-wide invasion is thwarted with Tropaeolaceae.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Gita Chandra, Haresh Chandra, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Rani Chandra, and Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: There can never be enough stories about Gita Chandra, especially if Ace, Mickey, Martha, and Sarah Jane are involved. I love it! It's a fun story about thwarting aliens set in the SJA universe. Hey, if Craig Owens can kill a Cyberman with love, why can't Gita and the gang give it a shot with flowers!

Excerpt:

Ms. McShane sighed. "You know, this is the third flower shop we've lost this way."

Martha said, "I keep saying we should try a different business. Something less dangerous."

Her husband added, "We could have a pet store. Or shoes. Men's shoes."

"I like flowers," said Ms. McShane.

Sarah Jane placed an arm around her shoulders. "Maybe change the store name?"

Mickey said, "Yeah. 'Sherwood Florist' is unlucky."

Martha said, "I wanted to call it Everything But Roses. I was outvoted."

Author's Summary: None
Characters/Pairings: Harriet Jones, Liz Shaw, Mickey Smith, Romana II, Rose Tyler, The Daleks, The Doctor (10th)

Failed to post yesterday, so have two today!

Story: Catch Me A Catch
Author: Queen of the Castle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2043
Author's Summary: Sarah Jane looked at Rose and saw herself back before the Doctor had broken her heart. And even though Sarah Jane had finally seen what the Doctor looked like when he was in love – a look Sarah Jane now accepted would never be directed at her – she wondered whether it was going to be enough.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith, Mickey Smith, Tenth Doctor; minor Rose/Ten, Rose/Sarah Jane, (one-sided) Sarah Jane/Ten

Recced because: "But...you could come with us." The line that prompted a million AUs! Well, not exactly - but it should have, because what would have been better than Sarah Jane back in the TARDIS? This take on it specifically explores Rose and Sarah Jane's relationship with the two of them as companions (a dynamic further complicated by the Doctor being stubborn and oblivious). The friction between Rose and Sarah is wonderful; even as they become close - and closer! - Sarah struggles to adapt to this new generation of the TARDIS crew, and to define the limits of both old and new relationships.
[identity profile] averita.livejournal.com
Hi, everyone! I'm [livejournal.com profile] averita, and I'll be reccing this week. As a die-hard Sarah Jane fan, most of the fic I have for you guys will involve her in some capacity, but there should be a good variety of Classic Who, New Who, Big Finish, and SJA characters and themes! To start, one of my favorites:

Story: Miles from Aberdeen
Author: dbskyler
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 19,414
Author's Summary: Getting left in Aberdeen requires Sarah to make more than one type of journey.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, Ten, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Harry Sullivan, the Brig
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'm pretty sure that this is the first Who fic I read; if not, it was certainly the first one that made a major impression on me. This gorgeous piece, set during and immediately after School Reunion (with a couple of perfectly-situated flashbacks), fits into canon but fills in a lot of the scenes we didn't see onscreen, such as Sarah Jane finding out about the Time War. The focus is on Sarah, her emotional journey, and her relationship with the Doctor, but all of the interactions are pitch-perfect - there are a couple of great scenes with Rose towards the end that I would have killed to see in canon! As satisfying as School Reunion is, this fic expands on some of the undercurrents that were only touched on in the episode, and does so beautifully.

Hello and welcome once more to another week of fan fiction picking here on Calufrax! I am James or ‘Derek Metaltron’, your guide for the next few days. It really doesn’t seem that long since the last time I took this awesome responsibility back in early September when Doctor Who and Torchwood were both rounding off and I was a lot freer than I am now, as since then I’ve started my rather extensive postgraduate degree. Still, can’t be so difficult to find some quality fics from all eras of Who, right?

Now to begin we’ll start with some episode tweaking within the still much loved Tenth Doctor era…

###

Story:
A Complicated Event In Time And Space
Author: Aldanon
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 53,493 Words
Author's Summary: It took almost twenty hours to tow the Earth back home after saving all of reality from the Daleks. Set during Journey's End, this story is a compilation of events that took place in the TARDIS and on the Earth in those hours.
Characters/Pairings: Ten II/Rose, Martha/Mickey, Tenth Doctor,  Donna Noble, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jackie Tyler, Rhys Williams, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings:  A fair potion of Angst and Hurt/Comfort for certain characters and a mild case of Whump.

Recced because: As a fan boy and someone who came into Who in the days before the New Series and the suggestion of certain pairings and the like, I tend to view certain kinds of fan fiction warily. However, whilst I’ve always loved the idea of Martha and Mickey getting together I came to love Aldanon’s protrayal of setting up Rose with the duplicate Ten – here, she’s elected to suggest that rather than mere minutes it took many hours for the Earth to be dragged back to its rightful position, leading to the possibility of talks and interactions which Russell denied us. While Ten II/Rose and Mickey/Martha are the main focuses here all the TARDIS crew get a piece of the action. Better yet, this lengthy fic expands into two sequel works which focus on the lives of these two pairings afterwards. In short this is a big read but well worth it!

Story: A tin heart can bleed too
Author: Who_La_Hoop
Rating: Teen, probably
Word Count: 441
Author's Summary: In which K-9 and Mickey do stuff that they really, really shouldn't.
Characters/Pairings: Mickey Smith/K-9. Yes, you read that right.
Warnings: I know the comm rules say we shouldn't warn for either het or slash (and rightly so), but...what do you call man/tin dog?

Recced because: I'll keep this brief, because it's very late and I need to sleep, but here goes: Now, dear readers, I don't want you to go reading this rec and thinking I'm some sort of...odd character for liking it so much. But I do actually think it's pretty awesome, for a variety of reasons. And you know, tin dogs of all kinds need love too, right?

I'll confess to always feeling a bit sorry for Mickey. He never seemed to get a break. Well, until he became a freedom fighter against the Cybermen, somehow married Martha and then ended up running away from Sontarans in derelict industrial areas as Ten angsted at them from afar. So it all came good in the end, you might say. But in between times, he didn't have much luck did he? Which is why I like the idea of him finding a bit of companionship and satisfaction, even with a...yeah...

Look, I'll stop being silly and get to the point. I think you should read this story, because it's very funny, very well written (I love the economical way the author captures Mickey's voice in particular) and if the ending doesn't make you go "Awww"... (while simultaneously snorting whatever beverage you're currently consuming out of your nose), then you probably ought to go and buy a soul somewhere. The review I left over on Teaspoon when I first read it just says "Genius!" and I don't think I was incorrect. :)

Hey everyone, it’s September 9th! You know what that means? We’re 107 days away from Christmas! And what better way to celebrate the festive season way, way too early than by fourteen tales of Winter Wonder with – get this – EVERY Doctor, Sarah Jane, Torchwood and K9?

Story: Christmas
Author: darkestboy
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 20,432
Author's Summary: A collection of Christmas themed stories throughout Time and Space. Spoilers from all of Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and K9.
Characters/Pairings: 9th Doctor, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jackie Tyler; 5th Doctor, Peri Brown; 10th Doctor, Martha Jones, Donna Noble, The Cybermen; K9 Mark 2, Alistair Gryffen; 7th Doctor, Ace, Mel Bush, Sabalom Glitz; 8th Doctor, Grace Holloway; 4th Doctor, Leela, Romana II; Jack Harkness, Alonso Frame; 3rd Doctor, Liz Shaw; 1st Doctor, Steven Taylor; 11th Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright; Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Clyde Langer, Rani Chandra, Jo Jones, Santiago Jones; 2nd Doctor, Ben Jackson, Polly Wright; 6th Doctor, Evelyn Smythe.
Warnings: None

Recced because: darkestboy is one of those authors who has done the seemingly impossible and written fan fiction for nigh-on every corner of the Doctor Who Universe, yet he has yet to receive any significant recognition for it, which is a tad unfair. This collection in question via a logical theme is a perfect example of this fact and every short story is great, ranging from the lost Christmas for Rose Tyler, to Winter reunions with Grace Holloway and Liz Shaw to the 1st Doctor dressed as Santa Claus! A fine introduction to this author’s work. The idea of a set of stories for all the Doctors is inspired too and he’s already started a second one for spooky Halloween. Indeed I’m thinking of trying something similar myself! Hope you like this!

My penultimate rec is, like my ultimate one, for a Big Bang fic!

Story: Beyond The Yellow Brick Road
Author: pluto
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 23849
Author's Summary: Years after her adventures in the TARDIS, Martha Jones is haunted by the Doctor as she investigates an alien crash site.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, The Doctor (10th)

Recced because: It's a thoughtful and occasionally moving look at Martha, Mickey and Jack years after their travels with the Doctor. It shows Martha at her best: clever, compassionate, thoughtful and occasionally stubborn. (And I adore the idea of Martha treating humans who're stupid enough to get alien headcolds because they don't take sufficient precautions!)

Glancing up from her notes as she stands at the podium, Martha glimpses brown hair and a blue-suited shoulder. After her dream that morning, she immediately thinks Doctor, her breath catching in her throat.

She tells herself that blue suits and brown hair aren't especially uncommon. Besides, the Doctor she knew is gone: years ago, she and Mickey intercepted the UNIT reports of a new regeneration spotted. And she'd known even before that, hadn't she? Known it in her heart that he was dying when she saw him last, known it like she had been punched in the gut.

She fusses with her notes until she's recomposed herself, and when she looks up, there's no Doctor, just a dozen dozen restless faces, staring up at her.

From travelling the galaxy to defending the Earth to hunting aliens to this, she thinks, scanning the room. Working for herself under the banner of Jones Xenobiological Consulting, Martha's in high demand in the field of xenopathology, though she finds most of this plays out as treating people who've caught alien head colds (and the odd STD--she doesn't ask) from investigating crash-landed artifacts.

Here's the first of this week's several multi-era stories:

Story: Evolution
Author: Concordiaadieu/[livejournal.com profile] catholicphoton
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 30094
Author's Summary: Set Post-JE. Martha goes missing, and panic ensues.
Characters/Pairings: Francine Jones, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, The Doctor (10th), Torchwood, UNIT

Recced because: It's a rolicking good adventure romp with a creative use of Martha's backstory and a Classic Who enemy who not many fic authors have bothered to bring into New Who stories.

“Doctor, what is that? Can it find Martha?”

“It detects disturbances to the fabric of space-time, so hopefully yes.”

Jack cleared his throat. “I’ve got one of those too, only mine’s sleek and sexy.”

“Jack, stop it. Now assuming that the disturbance you detected earlier with your sleek, sexy and, by the way vastly inferior, detector thingy is connected to Martha’s disappearance, and in all honestly signs point to yes, then with this massively superior detector thingy not only can I detect it, but I may be able to trace where it came from and where it went. The when may be a little trickier.”

Jack shrugged and grabbed Gwen’s hand as the Doctor took off at a run toward the disturbance. Jack snorted. “He could have just asked where we got the reading, but no, he likes run.“

Gwen grinned at him. “You’re one to talk.”

Story: The One with the Cotton Candy and the Batteries
Author: Bananaqaiquiri
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 1190 words
Author's summary: It's 2012, and a bloke in leather pisses Mickey Smith off at the supermarket.
Characters/Pairings: Mickey Smith/Martha Jones(-Smith), Ninth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: A couple of my recs this week are quirky timey-wimey stories, and here's the first of them. A man walks into a supermarket... yes, really! It's 2012, and Mickey Smith is minding his own business as he hunts down acceptable snacks in the supermarket - until he's accosted at the checkout by a man in black leather with big ears wanting to borrow a quid. While the Doctor wants to know what Mickey's doing in 2012, Mickey has a much more important question: why on earth is the Doctor buying batteries?

It's funny and unexpectedly sweet, and I loved it. You may need to suspend disbelief just a little given how different 2005 Mickey looks from End of Time Mickey, but the story's good enough to ignore that.

A little taster to whet your appetite: below the cut )

If you enjoy it, please tell the author!

Hello all! I am kilodalton, a rather new Who fan (and a rather New!Who fan XD) who will be recc'ing for you this week! I've become a huge fanfic afficionado and am really looking forward to being able to share some of my favorite fics with you =)

Story: If You Want My Future
Author: Pirate Perian
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1947
Author's Summary: After the events of "The Girl in the Fireplace," Rose has a question for the Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Rose, Mickey
Warnings: None

Recced because: I rec this fic to e v e r y o n e. Even people who hate fanfic (like my husband). And I have yet to find one person who doesn't think it's seriously fab =) I think I have read just about every post-Girl in the Fireplace fic out there. This one is not only my favorite of the bunch - it is so inspired, it is one of my top favorite fics period. There is a huge, jarring (imo) change in mood between the somber end of Girl in the Fireplace and the giggly, cuddly beginning of the next episode, Rise of the Cybermen. Many fics have attempted to fill in the blank here - but none has been so true to the characters of Ten and Rose, their particular kind of friendship, and the evolving dynamic in their relationship. This fic is poignant yet fluffy, and has entered the realm of personal canon for me. Enjoy =)

Story: Stir
Author: Doyle
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1067
Author's Summary: “Oh, go on, blame me, just because I don’t give you out a guidebook and a packed lunch every time I park the TARDIS…”
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, Mickey Smith, Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler
Warnings: None.

Recced because: So there were these three time travellers locked in a cell, right… It’s very funny. Doyle sets up a slightly AU S1 TARDIS team, in which Mickey joins after Boom Town and then follows up with a trip where the Doctor, Mickey and Jack all speedily get arrested for different reasons by a very distinctive (and terribly nice) set of aliens.

It’s hard to say more without spoiling the fun, but it’s by an author who does these things brilliantly and it’s Nine, Mickey and Jack in a cell. I’ll just add a taster and leave you all to it:

“Here we are,” [the guard] said, pressing his hoof against a pad on the floor. “I’ll be along with some food once you’ve settled in — oh, and we’ve put you in with our other two guests. They’re both new too so you’ll all be lovely company for each other. Of course, the place is empty so there’s plenty of space if you want your own cell, but I read once,” he said, a little whinny of distress coming into his voice at the thought, “that humans die of loneliness if you keep them on their own.”

“You could be thinking of gerbils there,” the Doctor said. “Easy mistake to make, I get them mixed up all the time. And I feel a bit of pre-cog coming on; these two new prisoners wouldn’t be called Jack Harkness and Mickey Smith, would they?”

Story: Five Ways the Doctor Didn't Get Out of 18th-century France (but Could've)
Author: HonorH
Rating: General
Word Count: 6144

Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Madame de Pompadour, Mickey Smith, Original Companion, Other Character(s), Other Character(s), Rose Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (Author-Created)
Warnings: None
Recced because: Five Things stories are always interesting exercises, and this one is a tour de force, mixing everything from comedy to angst, crossovers and straight Who fic.

Story: Don’t Think You Knew you Were In this Song
Author: azn_jack_fiend
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5769
Author's Summary: Mickey and Jack meet again after the events of Children of Earth. Mickey considers how his life has changed since their first meeting, how far he's traveled since then, and wonders what he'll say to Jack. In between, he remembers a long, strange dinner party with the Jones family.
Characters/Pairings: Mickey/Martha, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones’ family
Warnings:. none

Recced because: Mickey is a hard character to get a sense of as a whole person, but this story captures him brilliantly. It shows how and why Mickey matured during the series, and how he’s also still the same man. After reading this, the romance between Martha and Mickey makes perfect sense to me. The story also captures the lingering effects of the Year on the Jones’ family – how far they’ve come, and how they are still damaged. It’s also interesting seeing Jack through Mickey’s eyes. Mickey is the one person on Earth who knew Jack before he was mortal, and it gives him a unique perspective on the Captain.

Story: Jack Harkness - Super Temp
Author: madder_rose
Rating: Adult/R
Word Count: 38609/33 chapters. Complete
Author's Summary: Jack Harkness lives in a cubicled office. Then one day, he meets a blue eyed man, and things slowly start to change.

Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones, Gwen Cooper, Rhys Williams, Mickey Smith, Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, OCs, Jack/OC, Gwen/Rhys, Jack/Ianto
Warnings: Domestic Violence/Rape, Torture, Mind Control, Adult language, character death

Recced because: What starts out seemingly as a complete AU, quickly turns into a terrifying and twisted story, involving a secret, evil branch of Unit, technology that's scary in both it's implimentation in the story and how scary it could be if used in real life, and a Jack who's victimized by both technology and the environment he's been placed in. Also features a kick-ass Ianto who takes no prisoners and is very much like the man who put shot Owen in the shoulder in Capt. Jack Harkness and used a stun gun to incapacitate one of the villians in Meat.
