rec: the chinese remainder theorem

Story: The Chinese Remainder Theorem
Author: [livejournal.com profile] eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1540
Author's Summary: "This is the place? Oh, that afternoon we spent, just flying kites." (Inspired by the Big Finish audio, "The 100 Days of the Doctor.")
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe
Warnings: nope.

Recced because: Evelyn and the Sixth Doctor are one of my all-time favorite TARDIS pairings. I think they are absolutely perfect together. And this story is them in every possible way. The language, the banter, the underlying love...it's all them. Not to mention the fact that this piece contains one of the most magnificent metaphors in all of fandom.

"We were talking about learning experiences. I asked what taught you the most in life, and with no hesitation you said, 'regeneration.' I asked you what that was, and suddenly we're talking about kites and Chinese generals--"

"Evelyn, for heaven's sake, it's a metaphor!" the Doctor blusters. At his sudden movement, the kite leaps a degree nearer the sun in the sky, the colours washing out behind the glare, the shape wavering. Evelyn just laughs.

"I figured that part out, Doctor, but if I couldn't call you on meandering metaphors from time to time, we'd hardly ever have a meaningful conversation."

Oh I ADORED this fic when I first read it - probably on LJ - despite not yet having "met" Evelyn (I'm sorry, hon, I'll get to you eventually, I promise !)

To me, it's the mark of a good (dare I say great?) writer - to convey a character with whom I'm not yet familiar so well that I love them anyway...

*nods* I am doing my best to catch up on several decades worth of Big Finish-y goodness but there are *several* decades worth to catch up on - and I only started less than a year ago...

LOL ! I'm good at obsession too - but alas, most of my free time goes on writing fic - and you can't do THAT and listen to someone else's writing (at least not coherently !)

LOL !

So far, writing is winning... It must be (*looks at calendar*) several months since I last managed to listen to an audio...

This one is awesome...as are most things with Six and Evelyn. It's a great metaphor for regeneration, as well.

I rather liked Evelyn's own metaphor for regeneration. (Mostly because it's got me picturing the Doctor wearing a brownie vest.)

Oh, thanks so much for your lovely comments! :)

Ooh, thanks for pointing this one out - I didn't read it when it was first posted, as I hadn't 'met' Evelyn yet, but now I have - so I'm going to save this to read soon. :)

It's dead brilliant. And another one gone from my to-rec list, but it's so good that if this means it gets recced sooner, I don't even mind. Even someone who loathes Six would enjoy this fic, I suspect.
