Hello, hello all!! I am PhoenixDragon and though I am rather late with it, I am your reccer for the next little while. All apologies for being late this week - but I shall try to make up for this by bringing some of the best work out there! Let me get started with this goodie...

Story: Concentration of Measure
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 227
Author's Summary: Trust is information. Information is the inverse of variance. The TARDIS must learn how to understand River Song.
Characters/Pairings: River Song, The Doctor (11th), The TARDIS
Warnings: Character Study, Introspection

Recced because: Not only is this author one of my favorites, but there is a good reason why: she can take concepts and thoughts that are beyond my ken and make them understandable. She can take ideas and facts that are not within my own realm of knowledge and make them simple to understand and grasp. She finds ways to do that with every tale - and this one is no exception. It is short (too short, in my opinion, but I feel that way about a lot of the fiction I read!) yet sweet, and even though I would love more, it says what it needs to within the words it is constructed of (my personal greed aside). This is Time and Events from the view of the TARDIS. That is a hard concept to grapple with in the first place, as we are a very linear species with a rather wonky understanding of time and events, even as they happen! Our memories aren't the best, either, to tell the truth. But here we have a character that has perfect recall (should She so choose) - in ANY event along the timelines. She is only restricted to Her (and Her Pilot's) events and timelines, but that is only because She no longer has access to the broader views and understandings of the TARDISes of Gallifrey.

But I'm getting ahead of myself here. This is a perfect little drabble about Sexy and how She 'sees'. What she CAN see and what She chooses to remember (whether it be the future or the past). I recommend anything from this author. But I'll give you this fic to jump off with.

Just a mere taste to get you going... )

I do hope you enjoy her work as much as I have! Be sure to leave her a review telling her so! And I shall be reccing another beauty here very soon...

I'm [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook and I'll be your reccer for the next two weeks. I'm very fond of most corners of the Doctor Who universe, so hopefully there'll be something for everyone before my time is up. Here goes...

Story: The Hump Day Party Mix
Author: eve11
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 4080
Author's Summary: Shuffle. Record. Rewind. Play.
Characters/Pairings: Clara Oswald, Eleventh Doctor, Frobisher
Warnings: None

Recced because: It’s a wonderful romp of a 'missing' story, involving Eleven, Clara, centipede nuns, multiple thefts (sorry, procurements), nods to all sorts of corners of the Doctor Who universe, and Clara gets to run into a certain shape-shifting private eye. It’s a joy from start to finish, but it’s also got heart and depth, centering on the mix tape of the title and what it means to Clara.

Story: Still Life
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 934
Author's Summary: "The most tranquil place in the universe, and you're lamenting a lack of ungulates."
Characters/Pairings: Eleven, Amy/Rory, the TARDIS
Warnings: none

Recced because: Okay, this story was written for a prompt I left in last year's Eleventyfest fic exchange, but I'd rec it anyway, because it's as soothing and tranquil as the Eye of Orion itself. Besides, sometimes (usually Mondays), you need something soothing and tranquil. It's a deceptively simple slice-of-life piece that serves as a lovely coda for "The Doctor's Wife," in which everyone, Time Lord, companions, and TARDIS, gets a much-needed moment of peace after a difficult ordeal.

Story: Moving Day
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 738
Author's Summary: "As it happens, my exile has been rescinded."
Characters/Pairings: Liz Shaw, The Doctor (3rd)
Warnings: Drabble, Missing Scene, Vignette

Recced because: I love the Third Doctor. As a toddler, he was one of my clearest memories. Dashing, mysterious, handsome, slightly prickly and debonair. His Doctor always had that disapproving set to his mouth, but his eyes twinkled like he knew a good joke and his sharp tongue covered a big heart (and a lot of sorrow). He was my first 'James Bond' and the best one ever as far as I am concerned.

It's really hard to capture that. It is easier to remember the acerbic tongue and sharp wit that was often used to lash out - and really hard to remember that sometimes, that's the sound of someone who needs a friend. The Doctor of this era had a lot of friends, but not many of them were able to stand up to him. Not many of them had an intelligence to rival his. Liz was one of those people. Sadly, she moved on - for a variety of reasons, though it was more than heavily hinted that her 'bitter rivalry' with the Doctor for head of the science division was one of them. It was all to easy to remember that - and forget that Liz left behind all that she knew, as well as a potential friendship with the Doctor. She moved on and did bigger and better things. But sometimes, it doesn't hurt to have old friends drop by for a visit. And sometimes old hurts can be forgotten and new friendships forged upon the fire of fond absence.

A small excerpt here... )

Ahh, yes - MARVELOUS. And a perfect way to ease the sting of Liz's departure. This was another goodie, folks - please stop by and tell the author how they made you smile. It will likely make THEM smile (and then...they'll MAKE MORE. *Nods*)

*HUGS*

Here I am again, Singe the Ever-Unready, for the next week. I love light, humorous stories starring any Doctor and any Companion but I do tend to gravitate towards the Classic series. I will do my best to provide a mixed bag of New and Old, however. Let's go!

Story: Procedure
Author: eve11
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 737
Author's Summary: Foreigners never read the signs, and they never planned for security.
Characters/Pairings: The 4th Doctor and Leela
Warnings: None

Recced Because: eve11 is a consistently good author and this entire scenario of the Doctor and Leela (LEELA?!) being held up by airport security struck me as very, very funny.

Snippet:

The metal detector buzzed. Bleary eyed, Jake swiped a small plastic bowl from the stash at his side and set it on top of the X-ray machine for his partner manning the gate. Pedro was the tall and silent type, so without looking up, Jake said, "Remove all items from your pockets and try again."

"Really?" came a booming voice. Jake looked up. A pair of bulging eyes blinked back at him from under a shock of brown curly hair. "Are you sure?"

Story: Glossolalia
Author: eve11
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 971
Author's Summary: "Like all the other tourists, we're here for the Fable."
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s beautiful, quite simply. It’s beautiful, imaginative and mysterious, as the Doctor takes Donna to a planet to explore a phenonmenon that he can only experience, now the Time Lords have gone. If you’ve read any of this author’s stories before, I don’t need to tell you that it’s also exceptionally well-written, and that there’s a real sense of an alien world and slightly fairy tale concept being evoked here.

Ah! There you are, dear reader. [livejournal.com profile] doctorpancakes is the name, also whatthefoucault on teaspoon and elsewhere besides.

Story: Recurrence Relations
Author: eve11
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 614
Characters: Six, Evelyn Smythe
Author's Summary: He'd been aiming for the 7745th Caralanthian Exposé to indulge in the most supreme form of Battenberg ever created by the computational cuisiniers of the time. The time co-ordinates read Earth. England. 1953.
Warnings: None
Recced because: So many feelings packed into a perfect little moment. I love Six and Evelyn: there is by far and away not enough love for them about, so it cheers me to find a rare little story as completely adorable and perfect as this one.

Story: Nonparametrics
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 462
Author's Summary: "Singing. It's an aesthetic completion."
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because:

This fic is both clever and inventive. It manages to portray a non-human (non-humanoid?) perspective believably. And the Doctor is so perfectly himself here- himself at his best.

Story: Don't Wander Off
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 839
Author's Summary: The TARDIS looks after her Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven, the TARDIS
Warnings: None
Recced because: This is a quick, cute story in which the Doctor and the TARDIS bicker adorably and try their best to look after each other.  The Doctor gets hit by poison darts, as he is wont to do in fanfiction, and the TARDIS, as usual, knows best.  It's not even a thousand words, but it feels like a complete story, complete with some nice world-building touches.  One of the strengths of this story is that it manages to show the depth of the relationship between the Doctor and his ship, while maintaining the strangeness of a sentient machine--they're at once an old married couple and a very alien pair.  All in all, it's really sweet.

Story: Adversaries
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1662
Author's Summary: Instead of Configurable Analog Transmitter Stack, box contained vermin. Would not buy again.
Characters/Pairings: the Doctor (11th)
Warnings: none

Recced because: To finish up the week, how about some sweet, sweet crossover nerdcrack?

This is a charming, funny short story, told in an amusing style that strikes me as vaguely Pratchett-y.  It's somewhat cracky, yes, but the eleventh Doctor is pretty much his usual daft self—and besides, crack isn't always a bad thing.  This story is, in some ways, feels as if it was designed to be the perfect nerd drug.  As a nerd, I don't mind in the slightest.

Also, it involves kittens.  Excessive amounts of kittens.  Excessive amounts of kittens which foil evil.  There are few things in the world that cannot be improved by this.

An exerpt, in which chaos has ensued )

Story: Balance of Power
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2451
Author's Summary: The Doctor has a plan to save a xenophobic society from itself. If only he could remember what it was.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven, Amy, Rory
Warnings: None

Recced because: The world-building in this story is great. Eve11 manages to set up a compelling backstory in very little space, and the inhabitants of the mysterious planet are very well fleshed-out. The characterization is perfect--she really captures Eleven's voice. If you like h/c, this is also a good story for that. (I should mention that although the story is marked as having nothing to warn for, it does involve non-graphic torture.)

Title: Home Field Advantage
Author: eve11
Rating: All Audiences
Word count: 2,499
Author's summary: "I could beat you in any race on Grket. It's a simple fact." Entry for the 2010 Short Trips on audio writing contest."
Characters: Doctor 5, Turlough
Warnings: None

Recced because: I would crawl five miles over broken glass to stand in 5's garbage. That being said, this is a story about Turlough. Turlough, the surly malcontent, is having the unexpected time of his life using his high-gravity muscles on a low-gravity planet. Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's...some guy from Trion. The Doctor, even stronger than Turlough, is having less fun as he destructs his way across the land trying to help the inhabitants with not getting killed to death by an unnatural disaster.

God what a imaginative, well-written, beautifully characterized and funny story. Eve11's original aliens are a treat and their world is well-populated with fascinating critters. Best of all the low-grav aspect of it makes me want to go there and play, play, play. Great stuff. And I found myself truly liking Turlough which just proves what a good story this is, really.

The rootwood facade also served as a railing for a wedge-shaped veranda cut into the top floor, and it was onto this balcony that the Doctor found himself politely escorted.

"Please wait here for the completion of the scan," Technician Strrek said, peeling his hand from the Doctor's sleeve as he ushered him out of the laboratory.

"Yes, I'm terribly sorry-" the Doctor said, looking past Strrek's reedy, towering frame toward the monitors inside.

"As am I," Strrek interrupted, "for that is the second display console you have broken today."

 Story: The Wind's Will
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1062
Author's summary: On Kurhan, the Doctor learns that neither he nor Martha are very good skaters.
Characters: Ten, Martha
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'm a sucker for post-"42" fics, and this is a very quiet, gentle coda to that episode.  Eve11's deft writing makes this a very sweet moment between Martha and Ten while highlighting the gap between them.  Here's an excerpt:

It's actually Monday for me now, but I only just realised I'd missed my final day. This is a good one to end on.

Story: Walks Through Walls
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3996
Author's Summary: "Just remember, Doctor. In the midst of the whirlwind, Peladon will always welcome you."
Characters/Pairings: Six, Erimem, Peri, Frobisher, Iris, Mel, Evelyn, Charley (and Eight).
Warning: Spoilers for 'The Bride of Peladon'.

Recced because: It's a beautiful thing, built around a very simple prompt - Six gets Erimem a new cat. This he does, and there's clearly a great kinship between this Doctor and the cat (Five was not so fond of them) and that's great, but eve11 doesn't leave it at just that. Instead, Erimem lives out her life on the slow path and Six shows up with all his companions at various times in her life, and each meting shows us something different about Erimem, who is living her life very well without the Doctor - which is something else to be glad of. I must also admit that anything with Frobisher and/or Iris in it, and done well, is likely to bring me great joy. And this does - though, unlike anything else I've recced - it is somewhat bittersweet.

Story: SCRUPLES
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1043
Author's Summary:It's important to stick to your principles.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Melanie Bush
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is essentially a character piece and a rather splendid one at that. It explores a neglected TARDIS team; it’s sweet, funny, yet telling in places and absolutely what Mel and Six got up to in their spare time. What more can I say?
[identity profile] elliptic-eye.livejournal.com
Story: On the Study of Shatter-Resistant Materials
Author: eve11
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3071
Author's Summary: Peri's grandmother gave her a different doll every year on her birthday.
Characters/Pairings: Six, Peri
Warnings: none

Recced because: This fic might just be the most justice Peri has ever gotten in or out of canon. Peri, I realize, is not everybody's cup of tea, or even most people's so far as I can tell. Hut I think that this fic, as beautifully written as it is, would be rewarding to both her fans and her detractors, because it nails everything about her that I love.

It does the same for her prickly relationship with Doctor number six, showcasing both their friendship and their friction in a way that makes them both sympathetic. There's a lot in this beautiful little study that's heartbreaking—often in a mundane, real, everyday way—but a lot that's hopeful woven into it, for both the Doctor and for Peri.

All that, and a freaky alien planet, to boot.

Story: All Her Children She Keeps
Author: eve11
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 362
Author's Summary: The Doctor and the Master, at the beginning.
Characters/Pairings: Theta/Koschei
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's Young!Doctor/Master, longing to escape, all young and in love and stuff, and seeing as we know how it all goes, it is also quite melancholy.

Story: The Chinese Remainder Theorem
Author: [livejournal.com profile] eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1540
Author's Summary: "This is the place? Oh, that afternoon we spent, just flying kites." (Inspired by the Big Finish audio, "The 100 Days of the Doctor.")
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe
Warnings: nope.

Recced because: Evelyn and the Sixth Doctor are one of my all-time favorite TARDIS pairings. I think they are absolutely perfect together. And this story is them in every possible way. The language, the banter, the underlying love...it's all them. Not to mention the fact that this piece contains one of the most magnificent metaphors in all of fandom.

Story: Expectation and Maximization
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2979
Author's Summary: "Rose Tyler, you've faced clockwork droids, Slitheen and Cybermen, not to mention five different types of zombies and a megalomaniacal nightmare better known as the Emperor of the Daleks, and you're telling me you're afraid of some maths?"
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), Rose Tyler
Warnings: None. Unless you fear math.

Recced because: I love the few stories that actually try to get inside the Doctor's understanding of time and probabilities, and this one finds a wonderful visual metaphor for how he always seemingly knows what to do and when.
