Rec:Dr Harry Sullivan in... Another Exciting Adventure! (The ‘You Had To Be There’ Remix) by aralias

And this is the last rec from me. I hope you've enjoyed at least some of these stories.

Story: Dr Harry Sullivan in... Another Exciting Adventure! (The ‘You Had To Be There’ Remix)
Author: aralias
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1408
Author's Summary: Watch Out, Opponents of Women’s Rights! Doctor Harry Sullivan is on your tail!
Characters/Pairings: None listed, but includes Harry Sullivan, Sarah Jane Smith, Fourth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's written in an hilarious style from the point of view of someone who thinks Harry is a hero and everything he does is inherently heroic. Whereas the Doctor and Sarah aren't, of course.

Rec: The Mildly Saucy Pejorative of Fatal Death by MacBeth

Story: The Mildly Saucy Pejorative of Fatal Death
Author: MacBeth
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1553
Author's Summary: Why isn't there more Fic of Fatal Death? Why didn't the Doctor simply retire? Why do so many Companions wear high heels when exploring other planets? This fic doesn't necessarily answer any of these questions. We'll explain later.
Characters/Pairings: Emma, The Doctor (Atkinson)
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: It's a Fatal Death fic written in the same style, with the Atkinson Doctor and Emma poking fun at the usual companion responses and the usual sort of things the Doctor says.

Rec: The Divine Feast of Akhaten by Pendragon

Story: The Divine Feast of Akhaten
Author: Pendragon
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2954
Author's Summary: The Doctor takes Susan to Akhaten.
Characters/Pairings: Susan Foreman, First Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is the story of how the Doctor and Susan ended up on Akhaten. It's really interesting to see how different he acts to when he visits with Clara. It's great characterisation as to what he and Susan were like before they spent a few months living in London in the 1960s.

Rec: A Vicar's Life by Psi Fi

Story: A Vicar's Life
Author: Psi Fi
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2218
Author's Summary: The Master settles into his disguise as the vicar of the village of Devil's End.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Delgado)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's the Master trying to be a nice, normal village vicar. It's amusing how he thinks of his parishoners and their demands on his time, and also how they respond to him. It's something I can definitely see happening.

Rec: That One Time Gita Chandra Saved the Earth with Roses by dbskyler

Story: That One Time Gita Chandra Saved the Earth with Roses
Author: dbskyler
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 760
Author's Summary: Throop had never before met an opponent like Gita.
Characters/Pairings: Gita Chandra
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's Gita being blind when it comes to aliens, which is fun enough on its own, but what makes this story stand out particularly is that it's written from the alien's point of view. Even though he describes things differently to how we would, we can still tell exactly what is going on.

Rec: Fare by honeynoir

Story: Fare
Author: honeynoir
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1886
Author's Summary: The Doctor cooks for Amy and Rory. (Spoilers for Vampires of Venice.)
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: There are two elements to this story, each of them interesting in their own right, but together they make a nice contrast. There's Rory's worry about how Amy feels about him and how she feels about the Doctor, and then there's the humour of the Doctor cooking. Rory is great in this, dealing with the madness around him.

Word Count: 276
Author's Summary: Everyone has their fears, even the bravest of people.

Rec: The Freedom of Lindos by Llywela

Hello, calufrax. I'm Paranoidangel and I have a variety of recs over the next fortnight, beginning with a long one from an author that hasn't been recced here before.

Story: The Freedom of Lindos
Author: Llywela
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 57,557
Author's Summary: En route to Scotland, the TARDIS accidentally lands the Doctor, Sarah and Harry in the middle of a desperate struggle for freedom on the other side of the galaxy.
Characters/Pairings: Harry Sullivan, Sarah Jane Smith, Fourth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a lovely long story with an interesting plot about the people of the planet Lindos and what's being done to them. There's plenty for the Doctor, Sarah and Harry to do in it, using their particular skills. The characterisation of the three main characters is spot on and the original characters and their races are fleshed out and interesting.

Rec: All the Ragged People: A 7th Doctor ShortTrip by theOther

Story: All the Ragged People: A 7th Doctor ShortTrip
Author: theOther

Author's Summary: "For her, whose life was dictated by chaos and adventure and personal suffering even the Doctor knew nothing about, life was to end not with a bang, but with a whisper."

Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a short fic with a lovely moment between the Seventh Doctor and Ace that shows how much they care about each other.

Rec: Dance Lessons by reversingpolarity

Story: Dance Lessons
Author: reversingpolarity
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 786
Author's Summary: The Doctor has finally landed Sarah and Harry somewhere relatively safe. So why not enjoy a party?
Characters/Pairings: Harry Sullivan, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a lovely bit of fluff between Harry and Sarah. Their banter is perfectly them and Harry being Harry is amusing, as is Sarah getting Harry to do what she wants.

Rec: Confessions by vvj5

Story: Confessions
Author: vvj5
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 829
Author's Summary: Eleven wants to discuss last night with Rory. Rory really wishes he wouldn’t.
Characters/Pairings: Rory Williams, The Doctor (11th), Contains background Eleven/River/Romana II.
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is an amusing little story. The Doctor's story of what happened the night before and the way he tells it are funny and in character, as is Rory's reaction. The Doctor failing to understand that he's talking about the sort of thing a father doesn't want to know about his Doctor just make it funnier.

Rec: Relax! by Lissy Strata

Story: Relax!
Author: Lissy Strata
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 475
Author's Summary: A nice day out ends with a mad dash back to the TARDIS.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a nice, light fic in contrast to yesterday's. It is a short fic with the typical tale that we all know of the TARDIS landing somewhere and the team ending up running back to it. There's a bit more to it than that, but to tell you what it is I'd spoil the whole fic. So I'd just go and read it, it won't take long.

Rec: Vermin in the Lower Zoo by Daystar Searcher

Story: Vermin in the Lower Zoo
Author: Daystar Searcher
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2138
Author's Summary: What if 'The Edge of Destruction' had marked the end of the Doctor's moral ambiguity in a different way, and his character had transitioned not into a hero, but a villain? One who demanded punishment for insubordination, and a price for ferrying two stowaways home.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Non-Con

Recced because: Anyone who knows me knows that I don't read fic with sex in because the sec never seems to be important. So you know this one must be good. In this case the sex isn't important - but that in itself is important. It is a horrifyingly dystopian AU, but there is something compelling about it, in the way that Ian and Barbara deal with the situation they find themselves in, that makes it hard to stop reading and harder to forget.

Rec: David and the Gorgon by Quean of Swords

Story: David and the Gorgon
Author: Quean of Swords
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 46,288
Author's Summary: It's been a year since David's girlfriend left to go travelling through time and space with the Doctor. Then one Thursday, David finds a statue that looks a little bit too much like one of his best friends. There's nothing to do but call the Doctor and hope he comes before more fall victim to a mysterious force turning young men into stone.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Original Companion, Original Companion, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (8th)
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: Although this fic is part of a series, this is the one I read first, so it's not necessary to understand who all the original characters are to enjoy this. And the original characters are a large part of the enjoyment. They're interesting and three dimensional and make you want to know more about them. The other reason I like this fic is the plot. It's a very Doctor Who-like plot, interestingly introduced and unfolded and solved. The fic also has its amusing moments, as in the excerpt, contrasted with the sad moments.

The Giraffe Convolution of Doom

Story: The Giraffe Convolution of Doom
Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6421
Author's Summary: There are vampire giraffes reported at the London Zoo. The Doctor must do something about that, seeing as he’s been there before.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Evelyn Smythe, Frobisher, Jamie McCrimmon, Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (7th), The Meddling Monk
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's clever how Primsong ties in the different Doctors and companions and events. It's also a quite ridiculous story - the ridiculousness of it all comes out of the characters and it feels right.

Rec: Five Times Sarah Lied to the Doctor About Harry

Story: Five Times Sarah Lied to the Doctor About Harry
Author: vvj5
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1379
Author's Summary: There's absolutely nothing going on between Harry and Sarah, whatever the Doctor thinks.
Characters/Pairings: Harry Sullivan, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's quite funny and the humour comes from the characters being perfectly themselves. The Doctor thinks he's knows things, Harry has no idea and Sarah's the one in control of both of them. Which is pretty normal for those three, really.

Rec: The Future is Full of Possibilities (and chocolate biscuits)

Story: The Future is Full of Possibilities (and chocolate biscuits)
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2399
Author's Summary: That time the Doctor and Donna accidentally kidnapped Morgana. Crossover with Merlin.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: If you don't know Merlin (the TV series) then this'll mean nothing to you, since Morgana is the central character. But if you do then it's funny to see how she deals with the Doctor and Donna and a world so different to hers.

Rec: Things Unsaid

Story: Things Unsaid
Author: TigerKat
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2521
Author's Summary: Ian and Barbara deal with an accident. Which perhaps wasn't terribly accidental.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, Susan, The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's amusing, the situation they're in and how long it takes Ian to catch onto it. And the suggestion at the end about how they might have come to be in that situation in the first place. It's also sweet and funny how Barbara and Ian both feel the same way about each other, but won't bring themselves to say it.

Rec: Amazon

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 413
Author's Summary: After resigning from UNIT, Mike is still trying to put things behind him.
Characters/Pairings: Jo Grant, Mike Yates
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's short and sweet. The story tells you a lot about the relationship between Jo and Mike and what they both do after she marries Cliff. It's just right for both of them.

Rec: Du Liebes Kind, Komm, Geh Mit Mir

Story: Du Liebes Kind, Komm, Geh Mit Mir
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Rating: All Ages

Author's Summary: Some time after she moves to America, Maria Jackson gets wrapped up in mysterious temporal events and Sarah Jane's past.
Characters/Pairings: Alan Jackson, Maria Jackson, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's nice to see Maria in America and it's interesting and fun to see her with the Fourth Doctor. It's also a good plot and, since it's written for the girl saves boy ficathon, it's good to see Maria saving the world, with the Doctor helping.
