I'm [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook and I'll be your reccer for the next two weeks. I'm very fond of most corners of the Doctor Who universe, so hopefully there'll be something for everyone before my time is up. Here goes...

Story: The Hump Day Party Mix
Author: eve11
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 4080
Author's Summary: Shuffle. Record. Rewind. Play.
Characters/Pairings: Clara Oswald, Eleventh Doctor, Frobisher
Warnings: None

Recced because: It’s a wonderful romp of a 'missing' story, involving Eleven, Clara, centipede nuns, multiple thefts (sorry, procurements), nods to all sorts of corners of the Doctor Who universe, and Clara gets to run into a certain shape-shifting private eye. It’s a joy from start to finish, but it’s also got heart and depth, centering on the mix tape of the title and what it means to Clara.

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook, your reccer for the week, and otherwise known as vvj5 on Teaspoon. I'm a big fan of all eras of our amazing show, so hopefully there'll be something for everyone as we go through the week.

Story: The Road Untraveled
Author: Daystar Searcher
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1424
Author's Summary: Just because you part ways with someone doesn't mean they stop influencing your life, as Ace, Mags, and the Doctor find out.
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Mags, Seventh Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Third Doctor, Frobisher, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, Second Doctor, Martha Jones, Rani Chandra.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Well. Two recs in two days that feature a suspiciously similar long and strange list of ingredients? What are the chances? There is an explanation, which lies in a recent challenge I made, using 12 prompts that could be played with individually, or together. (And I had no idea what yesterday's rec would be, but I was delighted - I can now rec the other, utterly amazing resulting fic containing all 12 here today.)

What I never envisaged was that someone could take all twelve and write a beautiful, short and serious fic that ties them all together. It should be impossible, but, as it turns out, if the writer is as talented as Daystar Searcher, it suddenly becomes perfectly natural and coherent. The main strand of the story follows Ace and Mags and their separate fortunes and whether either or both regret not staying with each other, but it doesn’t forget to include Welsh myths, vampires, evil giraffes, Rani Chandra, Frobisher etc. etc.. It’s amazing. Really. I could stand here and flail a little more about how impressed I am, but you’d be much better off running away to read it now. So, go; read!

Story: The Giraffe Convolution of Doom
Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6421
Author's Summary: There are vampire giraffes reported at the London Zoo. The Doctor must do something about that, seeing as he’s been there before.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Evelyn Smythe, Frobisher, Jamie McCrimmon, Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (7th), The Meddling Monk
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's clever how Primsong ties in the different Doctors and companions and events. It's also a quite ridiculous story - the ridiculousness of it all comes out of the characters and it feels right.

Hello and welcome to my recommendations. I haven't quite decided what they will all be, but I suspect lots with be Classic and BFA, if not all, and many will feature the Master, who is not only my favourite, but also under-represented, I think, at this fine institution.

Story: This Penguin For Hire
Author: Levendis
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3985
Author's Summary: When it comes to political espionage, Frobisher is really not your man.
Characters/Pairings: Frobisher, Six/Ainley!Master

Recced because: I'm not all that fond of first person fanfic, in general, but I am a sucker for the first person narrative of Frobisher, the shape-shifting, wise-talking detective penguin companion. And boy is it well done here: hilarious and in character. The Doctor is on similarly good form, fussing about problems with time and Frobisher getting his noble brow right. Meanwhile the Master is around and up to his old tricks, and there are many comedy misunderstandings as he meets Frobisher, then disguised as Six. Three great characters, very well represented, between whom the dialogue crackles, as you would expect in your Film Noir... pastiche. Very funny, very easy to read, and (particularly given that it was written for the prompt 'Six/Ainley/Frobisher: M-PREG') very clever.
(NB. The story contains no actual m-preg, but you should know that to fully appreciate the finer plot developments).

Excerpt: Some guys love complicated plans. Double crosses, triple crosses, the more elaborate the better. Me, I like my plans how I like my fish, simple and raw, and still wriggling. Maybe not that last part. But the point is, after all these years on the mean streets of the universe, I've seen enough elaborate schemes fall apart when the players forgot what was going on to know that straight forward is best. So when I tell you I went around looking like a clown, pretending to be a robot who was pretending to be a politician who was pretending to start a revolution, you can bet your last greasy mazuma it wasn't my idea. No, when I got shot at and molested and then forced to eat the last heir of "King Marfle", who wasn't actually a king, or even named Marfle, that was all the Doctor's fault.

Hello, I'm Auntie Singe Addams and you'll be my captive for the next week. I'm a huge fan of the funny, weird and romantic side of WHO and I'll be reccing a wide range of stories starring many different Doctors and Companions, classic and current, as I can possibly find. Some of them may be a little rough around the edges but all will have one thing in common. They're entertaining!

First up...

Title: T
Author: schildkroet
Rating: All Audiences
Word count: 1952
Author's summary: "While searching a library for a certain book, Frobisher finds something neither he nor the Doctor were looking for."
Characters: Frobisher and the 6th Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a quirky, well-characterized and humorous fic and I admit to being fascinated by Frobisher.

“Excuse me. Did the penguin just criticise the way I look right now?”

It's actually Monday for me now, but I only just realised I'd missed my final day. This is a good one to end on.

Story: Walks Through Walls
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3996
Author's Summary: "Just remember, Doctor. In the midst of the whirlwind, Peladon will always welcome you."
Characters/Pairings: Six, Erimem, Peri, Frobisher, Iris, Mel, Evelyn, Charley (and Eight).
Warning: Spoilers for 'The Bride of Peladon'.

Recced because: It's a beautiful thing, built around a very simple prompt - Six gets Erimem a new cat. This he does, and there's clearly a great kinship between this Doctor and the cat (Five was not so fond of them) and that's great, but eve11 doesn't leave it at just that. Instead, Erimem lives out her life on the slow path and Six shows up with all his companions at various times in her life, and each meting shows us something different about Erimem, who is living her life very well without the Doctor - which is something else to be glad of. I must also admit that anything with Frobisher and/or Iris in it, and done well, is likely to bring me great joy. And this does - though, unlike anything else I've recced - it is somewhat bittersweet.

Story: Love Has Many Shapes
Author: Darkerchild
Rating: Teen
Word count: 1,261
Author's summary: Frobisher/Peri, true love inside Six, who has inexplicably transformed into a 1968 Chevrolet Sportvan.
No, but really: Yes. Really.
Characters/pairings: Frobisher/Peri, Peri/Six, and arguably, in some sense Six/Frobisher. It's hard to tell.
Warnings:

Recced because: Because of the crack. Oh, God, the crack. Crack, and a pretty damned fantastic Frobisher characterization.

You have to understand: It's fairly difficult to break my brain with words alone, these days. But Darkerchild is somehow able to hit just the right note with this piece to do it, like somebody finding the resonance point and breaking glasses into itty-bitty pieces. It's the use of Frobisher's voice that allows her (or him) to do it, I think. Let's face it, Frobisher is the only character who could possibly guide us through a scenario like that.

Weirdly enough, this isn't exactly a humor piece. I think that's part of what makes it work, actually. In any case, it's a bit of surrealism rarely matched even in a fandom that practically invites it, and if you, like me, can't resist that sort of thing, the Doctor as a '68 Chevrolet Sportvan is for you.

Just a note: Having some familiarity with Frobisher would probably improve this story, to be sure. However, the author also manages to exploit the scenario to give enough information about who and what he is for the uninitiated to enjoy.

Story: All Changes Big and Small
Author: the_seventh_l
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1116
Author's Summary: 'Looking in the mirror, Frobisher thought he looked pretty good, even without a beak.' Sometimes even a shape-shifter needs to stay the same. Slight spoilers for "The Doctor's Daughter" and the end of "Journey's End".
Characters/Pairings: Frobisher, Iris Wildthyme, Jenny
Warnings: none

Recced because:

Because Monday's are rather awful sometimes, here's a bit of crack to brighten the day!

For those not in the know, Frobisher is a shapeshifting alien – a Whifferdill to be precise – who likes to wear a penguin body most of the time. In this story Frobisher is having a bit of a mid-life crisis, with some interesting results… the line about him, Jenny, and an adopted Adipose alone make this fic worth its weight in gold. Also, the ending, which explains Frobisher’s fate, is scary-plausible (if a little AU).

Title: Five Phone Calls the Doctor Never Received
Author: the_seventh_l
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2749
Author's Summary: He knew buying a mobile was a mistake. Five phone calls across the years that make up the Sixth Doctor's life.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, Frobisher, Peri Brown, Mel Bush, Others
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a refreshingly original take on the old "five things" format, drawing on bits and pieces of the Sixth Doctor's era and quietly solving the little mysteries that arise. It's also one of those rare fics that can bring in characters from other fandoms without a jolt - and despite all these disparate elements, the author draws them together nicely with the running motif of the phone itself. A fun, fascinating, and surprisingly poignant look at the Sixth Doctor's era.
