Story: The Sacred Art of Stealing
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 458
Author's Summary: A very serious and in no way silly story in which the Doctor attempts to pinch Sarah Jane's companions.
Characters/Pairings: The Tenth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Maria Jackson, Clyde Langer
Warnings: None

Recced because: When I learned that Calufrax now allows you to rec fics that were previously recced more than two years ago, I knew I just had to throw in some old favorites. This fic, recced back in 2008, is still just as funny and enjoyable as when it was first written. The Tenth Doctor is in search of new companions, and where better to go than to Sarah Jane, who conveniently has some already-trained teenagers at the ready?

Story: A Change Is As Good As A Rest
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3154
Author's Summary: Now she had a half Time Lord-half human lounging on her sofa watching the X-Factor, and the heart of a TARDIS growing in an empty jam jar in her kitchen.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Rose Tyler (Donna/Rose)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It's an AU for Journey's End where the Doctor!Donna stays in Rose's dimension instead of the duplicate Doctor, and it's by turns hilarious and poignant.  The snippets of their lives that we get weave together to make the whole thing so believable.  The humour is pretty perfect too - "It was Christmas day. Rose had grown to hate Christmas, or, as it was known in the rest of the galaxy, Let’s Invade the Earth Day." - and the core friendship/relationship grows in a gorgeous way.  Plus, the ending.  I'd say more about it but...spoilers.  Go and read it to find out!

Author's Summary: Another important lesson Oswin learns is that creeping up on the Doctor while he sleeps and shouting, "EX-TER-MIN-ATE!" in his ear is only funny to her.
Characters/Pairings: Oswin Oswald, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: After meeting Oswin, who doesn't want to see the Doctor have a Dalek companion? From our short introduction to her, at least, the characterization is spot on. The author captures Oswin's flirty quips brilliantly. It's a quirky, clever story about what this unusual pairing could look like, and my absolute favorite Oswin Oswald story so far!

Author's Summary: “Never touch my sonic screwdriver."
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (9th), The Master (Simm)
Warnings: None

Recced because: The humour. The Master and his twisted but oh so wonderful mind. Nine and his grouchiness. Donna Noble. The one liners. Jack bloody Harkness and the mental image of TARDIS humping. THE FIFTH TIME! Seriously, a great fic that proves you don't need many words to pack a humorous punch. This story still puts a smile on my face and hopefully on yours as well.

Characters/Pairings: Duplicate Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler

Recced because: Because it's crack!fic. Because it's glorious crack!fic. Because it's glorious crack!fic written by Netgirl_y2k, who writes the most glorious of the glorious crack!fic there is.

The fic is written in the form of a diary, telling the tale of how Handy adjusts to his new life in Pete's World. He's having a tough time, because he can't find any alien invasions to foil. Fortunately, the Doctor is very good at problem-solving.

Story: Time to Get Away
Author: netgirl_y2k
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2435
Author's summary: In which there are flesh eating plants, drunken one night stands and Donna discovers that there are more mad time travellers calling themselves the Doctor than she's really comfortable with.
Characters: Donna Noble, Five, Tegan, Turlough. (Donna/Tegan but anything explicit goes on off-camera, as it were)
Warnings: none given

Recced because: Written way back in July of 2007 for the [livejournal.com profile] dw_femslash ficathon on lj. I can't even remember if we knew Donna was going to be the next companion by then; it was only 2 weeks or so after Last of the Time Lords aired. All we'd seen of Donna was the Runaway Bride, but thankfully, that was plenty of material to go on for those of us who already loved her :) [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k hits the ground running with this story and it just. gets. funnier. Seriously, I had a hard time picking an excerpt because I wanted to quote the whole thing. Its tone reads like crack-fic but the fact of the matter is, it's actually scarily plausible. Even if you don't usually go for femslash, read this story, especially if you need a laugh (it's totally worth it just for the description of the TARDIS noise at the end). And the ending itself is great fun and just the slightest bit prescient for series four.

Story: The Care and Feeding of Tiny Humans (and slightly larger Time Lords)
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1182
Author's Summary: The one where the Doctor comes back for little Amelia Pond.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amelia Pond, River Song, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: This seems a natural follow-on to yesterday’s fic, proving that the Doctor really should try kidnapping more often. I’ve loved the new Doctor so far, but, let’s be honest, isn’t this story what we all wanted to see? The Doctor comes back for wee!Amelia and they have adventures and it’s funny and wonderful and perfect, and somewhere in a parallel universe, let’s hope it really happened exactly like this. Because Amy is great, of course, but wee!Amelia is awesome, yes?

Author's Summary: The highly unlikely but excellent adventures of Ten, Mickey and Rhys.
Characters/Pairings: the Tenth Doctor, Micky Smith, Rhys Williams.
Warnings: please DO NOT warn for slash or het.

Recced because: this story is wonderfully funny, which should be reason enough. Add on to that Micky and Rhys, who are solid, decent, normal guys and also pretty much the embodiment of the mundane lives their girlfriends are trying to escape from, throw the two blokes into the TARDIS with the poor, poor Doctor, who is much more used to hanging out with admiring women, and you've got pure gold.

Word Count: 1,385
Author's Summary: If asked, Christina would say she rescued Romana from Torchwood. Actually, that's a lie. She'd say she stole Romana from Torchwood.
Characters/Pairings: Lady Christina de Souza, Romana II
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's unlikely we'll ever get to see Christina onscreen again, but fortunately, this delightful bit of crack leaps in to fill that gap – and Romana may actually be a better foil for Christina than the Doctor. Romana wants a spaceship, and Christina wants to steal; between the two of them, they create havoc, intentional and otherwise, and learn to appreciate the skills the other has to offer ... especially when it comes to making one final theft.

Characters/Pairings: Peri Brown/the Rani
Warnings: AU

Recced because: It's just a brilliantly fun romp. In an alternate universe somewhere, Peri Brown isn't romantically saved from drowning by Vislor Turlough—she's romantically saved by the Rani, instead. All for the cause of science, of course.

Netgirl combines the Rani's wryness with Peri's naïve abrasiveness to get great chemistry, and then proceeds to give a series of swift peeks at a magnificent show we never got but that I'd watch in a heartbeat. And there are, most importantly, giant bees.

Author's Summary: Donna Noble for Eleven?
Characters/Pairings: The DoctorDonna, Romana I, Ten

Recced because: The Doctor accidentally regenerates into Donna.  This causes complications, like the how and what of bras, and the awkwardness that ensues when you really can't hang around twenty-first century Earth and Wales for fear of awkward and embarrassing questions.  Not to mention pronouns.  Then she has to hide out for a bit, and what better disguise than a wee baby who's up for adoption...?

Girl!Doctor fics and Donna fix-its are a dime a dozen, but this iteration is a gem, and I'm thinking of accepting it as my personal canon.

Story: The Idiot's Guide to Foiling Alien Invasions
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All ages

Characters/Pairing: Mickey Smith, Jackie Tyler. With appearances by the Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, John Benton, Donna Noble, and Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because:  In this delightful story, the Doctor (Ninth) and Rose take a backseat, leaving the action to the often tragically underappreciated Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler. Amongst the fun and humor we explore some more serious themes often glossed over, such as the year Mickey spent as a suspected murderer, and how the relationship of Jackie and Mickey healed from that and became friends in their shared experience of those left behind.

It's gloriously cracky-awesome fun, and is absolutely hysterical, with an amazing selection of mad-but-plausible reasons for the weddings. Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Romana II, Martha/Romana
Warnings: None given.

Recced because: Since I promised to rec Romana fic I thought I'd actually better get on that then. I almost didn't rec this one because I think it's quite well known but then I thought there might be some poor souls out there who didn't know about it and I felt so bad for them I thought I better rec it anyway. There isn't, as far as I know, any canon logic behind Martha/Romana but it is a terribly fun pairing and you get to see some very fun dialogue between them, which this fic delivers in spades. This fic basically just entails a few glimpses into what Martha and Romana running around time and space together would look like and it looks like a whole lot of fun. Netgirl is as funny as she always is and both characters are spot on. Plus there's a little bit of Doctor mocking in there which can be lots of good fun.

Recced because: Well, I'm slightly biased as this was written for me as part of the ficathon on [livejournal.com profile] rose_lives, but meh, it's wondeful and deserves to be recced. Netgirl_y2k manages to get Rose's voice just perfect and there's not a lot of authors who can do that, in my opinion. In fact, there's a wonderful exchange between Jackie and Rose in the beginning which I can visualise so perfectly. It also shows both Rose and Martha saving the universe and being generally rather awesome as well as dealing with the sometimes awkward first stages of a relationship. I am rather in love with this ship, so even if they don't ever meet, I'm happy because I'll have fics like this to read.

Author’s summary: 'A very serious and in no way silly story in which the Doctor attempts to pinch Sarah Jane's companions.'
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Sarah, Maria, Luke, Clyde
Warnings: None

Recommended because: I'm a sucker for companions who become more Doctorish than the fellow himself, and the vision of a weary (but quietly smug) Sarah telling Ten to bog off as he attempts to half-inch her kids is a peach. Short, daft, and funny. (And given the apparent casting situation for SJA season 2, I'm declaring the final paragraph canon.)

Author's summary: "Do you ever get the feeling that we're the best two?"
Characters/Pairings: Tosh, Ianto, Owen, Jack, Gwen
Warnings: none

Recced because: In typically incompetent Torchwood fashion, Owen accidentally vaporizes Ianto and Tosh. (Well, kind of.) And a story with a premise like that has to go somewhere great. Sure enough: Tosh and Ianto find themselves lurking around the hub, able to communicate with each other yet unseen and unheard by their colleagues. It's good to have the focus on these two underused characters, and I can't argue too much with the last line.

Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Liz Shaw, the Brigadier
Warnings: nope

Recced because: This is exactly how it should have happened. I absolutely love the Third Doctor era, but it's always bothered me immensely that Liz and the Brig never got to travel in the TARDIS. They would have made fantastic companions, and this story shows us all the reasons why in tiny snapshots of fabulous adventures. The characterizations are spot on, the dialogue is perfection, and the whole thing feels SO right.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5025
Author's summary:
Characters/Pairings: Martha/Rose, Romana, Jack
Warnings: none, unless you want AU warnings

Recced because: There are three things about this fic that I absolutely love: it has femmeslash (my favorite genre after gen), it's an alternate universe (another favorite genre of mine), and it has Romana, Rose and Martha working together sans Doctor and kicking arse perfectly well without him. One of the things I love in Doctor Who fanfic is Companions Are Doing It For Themselves and this is a damn good example of the trope. (Not to mention that Netgirl_y2k is an awesomely fun and funny writer and it was really difficult for me to choose just one fic of hers to rec, because they're all good. I ended up picking this one because Calufrax really does deserve more femmeslash recs.)

Anyhow, I just really like this fic. A lot. Enough that I think everyone should read it. It has me willing to overlook the random typo and it's not every fic that can do that.

Author Summary: There's a house on Bannerman Road.
Characters: Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Clyde Langer
Warnings: None
Word Count: 2233

Recced because: I am a complete sucker for Year That Never Was stories, especially those in which Martha meets up with and is helped by former Companions of the Doctor. In this one Sarah Jane helps Martha with the Doctor's plan; there's also a brief cameo by Ace, which is spot-on, and the whole story is marvellously well-written.

"Where'd you get these?" Ace asked, marvelling at the quality of the forgeries on her return from Wales.

Recced because: This story takes advantage of the TARDIS's capabilities to produce a delightfully twisty set of meetings for Jack and Sarah. Word Count: 1345
Author's Summary: There are ghosts in the TARDIS.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Martha, Multi-Era
Warnings: None given

Recced because: This is a story about the Tenth Doctor and the repercussions of the Time War, unfolding through the eyes of Martha who starts seeing apparitions of the past throughout the TARDIS. It's a chilling tale, both in the power that the Doctor has, and the consequences of wielding it, and it makes us (those of us who think too hard about such things) stop and wonder, What if this were all real, and the Doctor was as flawed as television heroes can never be? The answer is simply 1300 words or so until the end of the line.
