Story: The Unbearable Darkness of Being
Author: Pab
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3530
Author's Summary: The Master has a new scheme to gain immense power and wealth. But first, he must travel to Umbria Prime and steal the Stone of Judgement. But having picked it up, he finds he cannot put it down.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Delgado)
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is a great Master-centric character piece set before he encounters the Third Doctor on Earth. As usual, the Master has an evil plan, and he doesn't care how others suffer while he achieves his goal. He follows through with part of his new plan before something unexpected occurs that might change his fundamental nature. Or is that really possible? The author does a nice job of making me both feel sorry for the Master and hate him at certain points.

Title: Any Colour You Like
Author: Calapine
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2744
Author's Summary: The Master's curious about his future wife.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Delgado), Lucy Saxon
Warnings: references to self-harm and suicide ideation.

Recc'ed Because: This story is a paradox, but it works nevertheless. The Master invites Lucy Saxon into his TARDIS and she accepts. The Master is curious and a bit uncomfortable, unfailingly polite and perhaps he do things to Lucy’s mind she doesn’t remember after. He may do it to be kind. And Lucy is damaged, which anyone who has survived the Master probably has to be, but she is also not afraid anymore. The chemistry between them too are very interesting and it is a story which can be read several times. It also beautifully and poetically written.

Author's Summary: For all he claims to dislike the Earth and its population, the Master seems to have adopted, and enjoys, quite a few human habits.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Delgado version)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a very fun and cute look into the Master's justification for adopting so-called human habits. Oh, look: The Master's being adorable again! Well, if any version's going to, then Delgado's is the version to best pull it off, and this author is a pro at catching his wry humor and charm. Recced because: It's a very sweet interaction between the characters. I honestly think these two could be friends, if they weren't on opposite sides. Strange to think that it's possible to get the warm-fuzzies from the Master, of all people...but it is possible! ♥ Enjoy!

Recced because: It’s difficult to say much and not give away the whole story as this is a short fic that manages to convey a lot in very few words. The Master has got himself stranded out of his time and is desperate to get away. Martha is trying to save the world, full of confidence in the Doctor. Their points of view differ. Go and read it, it will just take you a few minutes and I'm sure you won't regret it!

Author's Summary: Donna asks a reasonable question and the Doctor bends the laws of Time and Space to answer it. Which obviously involves two Doctors, UNIT, the Master and a nasty mess in the space/time continuum.
Characters/Pairings: The Third Doctor, the Tenth Doctor, the Master (Delgado), Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Donna Noble, Jo Grant, John Benton, Mike Yates
Warnings: None stated

Recced because: I love this story! The various interactions between the characters are hilarious and their voices spot on. I must confess to a special fondness for The Brig and Donna interacting with each other. I think they would have got along wonderfully if they ever had had a chance to meet. But there are several delightful scenes here, the Doctors bickering with each other, Jo realising that Ten is the Doctor and the Doctors joining forces to annoy the Master, for example.

Recced because: The Doctor is thinking of getting a pet snake, the Brigadier fudge personal files and the Master takes a part time job at Torchwood. What is not to love? Story: Self-Preservation
Author: Memory Dragon
Rating: teen
Word count: 16429
Characters: Delgado!master, Three, Simm!master
Summary: Running for his life with the Master, the Doctor finds someone he just can't leave behind.
Warnings: This fic is part of a well balanced diet of angst and cuteness. The Master gets a bit beaten up (off screen abuse of the insane on backwater planets) and there is a small bit of violence towards the Doctor, but I don't think it's anything major. Just a bit of choking, really.

Recced because: Self-Preservation features two incarnations of the Master, and Memory Dragon writes them both splendidly (though of course, anything Memory Dragon writes with the Master is guaranteed goodness). This fic shows the trust between the 3rd doctor and his master, something that has been lost in their later regenerations, and the mercurial nature of simm!master, and offers a believable explanation for how Delgado becomes who he will be. The story is very much one of contrasts, a moment of truce in a conflict that almost feels like a farce because it's obvious in this fic that Three and his master don't hate each other - rather the opposite. The concern the 3rd doctor and Delgado!master show for each other only underscores how bitter their battles will become. The conversation between the two Masters was also well done, with Delgado characteristically dismissive of his older self's melodrama. And the ending is excellent.

I could go on about it all day -- go ahead and read it!

It's funny. It's really, really, really funny. Lyaka has written a comedy of witty sass, dark humour, forbidden love, and enough snark to cause a temporal paradox. This is a Very Serious observation about the Master and his Beardiness (and sometimes lack thereof) throughout his own regenerations. His pursuit of the Perfect Facial 'Do - and the Doctor's mixed (and heartfelt) reactions throughout. Even if you have never seen Classic Who , I'm sure this will still be a laugh. I know at the very least, you might've seen pictures of the Master and his various attempts to decorate his chin with luxurious, artistic (and under-appreciated) styles that can only be admired by the true believers in the masterful pun intended expression of...of hair on one's face. Which isn’t to say the fic is fluff – parts of it are rather a bit angsty – but you can’t have an up without a down. The journey has plenty of emotion, meaning that it really earns its satisfying, heartwarming conclusion.

Best of all, the coda is cleverly set in some ambiguous future, which makes it the ultimate handwave-y fix-it. No matter what sadness has just aired on my TV, this fic is able to reassure me that one day everything will be okay.

Characters/Pairings: Three/Delgado!Master (also Three/Cheetah!Delgado!Master); the Brigadier, Jo Grant, Liz Shaw, and Sergeant Benton
Warnings: none

Recced because: Do you like cats? Do you enjoy this pairing? Then you, like I, probably spent the entirety of Survival with your jaw unhinged at the sheer amount of slash on the screen. I love the fandom trend of rewriting Survival with different Doctors and Masters, and this Three-era retelling shines, with well-written dialogue and characterization. For bonus points, it showcases the old-school UNIT crew, even to the point of including both Liz AND Jo. It’s just a shame there will never be a televised episode in which Delgado gets to rub up against Pertwee like an oversized cat.

Story: Placebo Effect
Author: Bagheera
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2411
Author’s Summary: The Master falls into his own trap.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/Delgado!Master, the old-school UNIT crew
Warnings: None

Recced because: Lighthearted without being frivolous, humorous without being cracky, and introspective without being melancholy, this lovely little fic has such perfect balance that everything seems effortless. There’s a real skill in taking one of the oldest, most overwrought clichés in the book – in this case, the mythical soul-bonding stone – and turning it into something that’s not only plausible, but has the reader cheering along. (How does she do this? The title provides a clue.)

Optimism and cheer are the tone of the fic, but there are currents hiding underneath that make me keep coming back to reread it. Insecurity is a powerful demon and one that never seems to quite stay dead. I’ve struggled with it, and I know many other fans do too. Beneath the good humor and banter, the deeper themes of self-esteem and security are deftly handled here, and the whole poses questions each reader will answer differently.

Story: Rosemary and Time

Author: Memory Dragon
Rating: PG-13
Summary: UNIT has finally found the Master, who went missing a month ago after being wounded. Relieved to hear the news, the Doctor finds that there's something still wrong with the Master. Uses the Master’s backstory from the Doctor Who novel “The Dark Path”, but reading the novel isn’t necessary to enjoy the fic.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, (Delgado) Master, Jo Grant, the Brigadier, Doctor/Master pairing.
Warnings: None.
Recced because: Why should it always be the Doctor who loses his memory? This fic is a clever look at what would happen if the Master suffered amnesia. It’s a lovely, funny, sad, bittersweet story about what would happen if the Doctor and the Master were able to be friends again.
Excerpt: “It was, surprisingly enough, the Brigadier who made sure that no one commented or were allowed to collect on bets when Koschei had taken to sleeping in the Doctor's TARDIS, rather than the flat UNIT had provided for him. Or unsurprisingly, considering the man could be very discreet and the less said about office romances the better. The Doctor was more amused than anything, but he could tell Koschei at least appreciated the courtesy. Jo had been very put out, however, since she'd have won at least fifty pounds by his reckoning from earlier conversations he'd overheard.”

Story: Tell Me About Your Mother (The Slightly Freudian Remix)
Author: Elliptic Eye
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1516
Author's Summary: A defining moment wherein a true friend helps the young Theta Sigma look deep within himself and understand the ways in which he is a wanker.
Characters/Pairings: Theta (pre-series Doctor), Delgado!Master, arguably Doctor/Master

Recced because: Elliptic Eye has written some very funny things - this is one of them. If you like jokes about the Doctor's teenage angst and bad poetry and/or jokes about the Master being a loser, you've come the right place (although, to be fair to Delgado, he comes off by far the better of the two in this). I also think the choice to turn a supposed therapy session on Gallifrey into a comedy skit was inspired - and, on that note, I think this is a very clever remix. The original is about a totally different character (although no names are given, so it's a fair cop swap) mentoring the young Doctor - and is without so much piss taking. But I like the piss taking. And I'm probably going to rec a more serious one tomorrow.

Story: Imaginary Worlds (the Here I Dreamt I was an Architect remix)
Author: Bagheera
Rating: Teen (it says All Ages, but I might even go so far as to say Adult)
Word Count: 5897
Author's Summary: There is a room in the TARDIS that always stays locked. (Written for the best_enemies remix challenge.)
Characters/Pairings: Doctor/Master - arguably including pre-series Doctor/pre-series Master, pre-series Doctor/War Chief!Master, Three/Delgado!Master, Three/Crispy!Master and Five/Master. One thing it doesn't have is Pryce!Master, although he is listed on Teaspoon
Warnings: None listed, though there is sex and swearing and horror

Recced because: This fic was written in 2009, since when dark fairy tales and Doctor Who have become increasingly intertwined. If you like the sort of story where something terrible is presented as a good thing in beautiful, soothing language, you might like this fic - even if you think Doctor/Master isn't really your cup of tea.

I think a brief introduction is necessary, though, before you read it. This fic is a 'remix' (of sorts) of another fic I also like (Imaginary Worlds by x_los), which posits that, at some point, the young Master made a copy of the Doctor that lived in his mind and which he could interact with as though it were the real Doctor. He abandoned the copy for a time, but returned to it after the Doctor left Gallifrey/him. In the original fic, the copy/construct idea was played largely for laughs - but it's very creepy, really, particularly in a universe where thoughts can think for themselves (see- oh, I don't know... 'Castrovalva', for example).

This fic is an atmospheric and disturbing examination of that idea, and of obsession carried too far. Thus, it also functions as an excellent character study of the Master.

I'm [livejournal.com profile] ffutures, Marcus Rowland on Teaspoon. When I began selecting stories for this week I noticed that the first two were by authors who have never appeared here before. I decided to try an experiment, and go for a full week of all-new authors. That turned out to be a LOT harder than it sounds; again and again I found that a story I liked had either been recced before, or was by an author who has been recced before. In the end I think that I've found seven good stories by previously-overlooked authors, without sacrificing any quality. Apart from that these stories are my usual mix of new-era and multi-era Who, with several crossovers. I hope that you'll enjoy them.

Story: The Orchid Thief
Author: Leviathan
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 14320
Author's Summary: Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin have solved a lot of tough cases in their careers as detectives. But never one like the one that begins with the new arrival in the Plant Rooms. Before it ends, they'll deal with a tattooed lady, miniaturized corpses, and Things from Another World!
Characters/Pairings: Jo Grant, Martha Jones, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (3rd), The Master (Delgado)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'm a sucker for crossovers, and this is not only a crossover, it's a crossover with one of my favourite detective series, and it's a multi-era multi-doctor story that manages to be faithful to all of the Doctor Who and crossover characters, and pitch perfect for the historical periods in which it's set. A fun romp and one I've enjoyed immensely.

Excerpt: I was halfway through dialing the Gazette, to ask Lon Cohen if there was a new craze in collecting disused British police phones, when the doorbell rang. I cradled the phone and stepped to the hallway, looking out through the one-way glass panel.

It was a morning for things that appeared not to belong. The two people on the stoop seemed as out of place in New York as the blue box in the alley and the strange thing growing up in Wolfe's plant rooms. It was a man and woman, but they didn't seem to be a couple. The woman was black — apparently “colored” is no longer the acceptable term — and quite lovely, wearing form-fitting denim jeans and a red leather jacket. I don't read fashion magazines, and who knows what's going to come out of Carnaby Street these days, and it certainly didn't look bad, but I'd never seen an outfit that looked quite like it: it had the look of a costume. The man was taller than me, but also a lot thinner, his hands stuffed into the pockets of a brown suit with fine blue pinstripes, a long brown trenchcoat pushed open and back behind him. He had enough brown hair for a Beatle, but it was messier and less defined, more like a Rolling Stone, and large, intelligent eyes that seemed to stare right through the one-way glass into mine. As I looked at him, he raised his fingers and waggled them as if in a childish wave, grinning broadly.

I went and opened the door some ten inches, backstopping it with my foot. “Good morning.”

“Ah, yeah!” the tall man's accent was English, his voice enthusiastic, “lovely morning, really, just lovely! You're Archie Goodwin!”

“Thanks,” I told him. “I wasn't sure.”

He grinned even more broadly, looking over between me and the black girl. “See, Martha, what did I tell you? The wit, the wit, the looks-- Not so much the charm, yet, but you have to like the wit!” He turned back to me. “And young! Not that you look much older, but still, there you are, yeah?”

“Here I am,” I agreed.

“Oh, yes, you are!” he said. “Yes, you really are!”

“Well,” I said, starting to close the door, “thanks for stopping by to straighten that out for me--”

He put an easy hand on the door, his smile somehow chiding me gently, affectionately. “Oh, come on, now, be a sport! Is that any way to treat an, well, someone who will have been an old friend the first time you meet him?”

I frowned, running through the sentence in my head, and the black girl rolled her eyes and stepped forward, offering a hand. “Hello,” she said. Her accent was also English, which always sounds a little strange to me coming from a negro. “I'm Martha Jones.”

Story: The Doctor's 500 Year Diary
http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=39493
Author: aralias
Characters: Third Doctor, The Master (Delgado), Jo, U.N.I.T.
Pairing: Third Doctor/The Master (Delgado)
Word Count: 2729
Rating: PG
Summary: In the course of the years recorded (unclear exactly how many), the Doctor confides his hopes, his dreams, his assessment of his wardrobe choices (v.g.) and his continual frustrations with the Time Lords - particularly the one who keeps annoyingly coming to visit him. It's difficult enough to keep his new regeneration resolutions already.
Why this must be read: It's hilarious! The Doctor's diary entries are hilariously snarky and really quite in character and his denial of his feelings for the Master is adorable. His friendship with Jo is also wonderful, going clothes shopping with her and talking to her about his conflicting feelings towards the Master. Completely adorable!
Excerpt: "10pm: Told Jo about the Master’s proposal. We both agreed that half a universe would give us significantly more wardrobe space, but that this wasn’t a good reason to accept a proposal from a ruthless megalomaniac, even if he is quite attractive and v polite. Am too young to get married/rule the universe anyway."

Characters: Third Doctor, The Master (Delgado), Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Jo Grant. Pairing: Third Doctor/The Master (Delgado).
Warnings: None.
Recced because: It’s completely and utterly adorable! Sweet and fluffy while still keeping everyone in character. This is exactly the kind of silly plan that Delgado Master would come up with and this is exactly how the Doctor, Jo, and the Brigadier would react. Great dialogue, wonderful use of Jo’s point of view, and great portrayal of Three’s era and its kind of humor.

Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Peri Brown, various versions of the Doctor and the Master
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Remixes are one of my favorite things in fandom. If you're not familiar, they're basically fanfics of other fanfics - taking someone else's work and giving it a new spin, a new perspective, or expanding it somehow. In this fic, Rynne started with A Bad Habit by Hokuto, which is a fun short piece about the Doctor and the Master working together, and expanded that idea into a series of confrontations and cooperative moments between the Doctor and the Master. I think the story succeeds both as a good example of a remix and as a good fic that can stand on its own.

But when I double-checked, one of them (and my favorite of the lot, if I could pick a favorite - TigerKat's Torchwood/Howl's Moving Castle crossover What Planet Are You From?) had already been recced! I don't know how I missed that the first time; I maintain that some timey-wimey reccer snuck it in when I wasn't looking. ;P

Anyway. Last fic of the week!

Story: A Ghost Story for Christmas
Author: JJPOR
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 28,991
Author's Summary: It's Christmastime; a time for family, and memories, and ghosts, even if you're the Doctor. Especially if you're the Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Delgado!Master, Jo Grant, Sgt Benton, Mike Yates, Liz Shaw, Brig/Doris, UNIT
Warnings: None

Recced because: Here is a nice long story suitable for weekend reading. (I swear I meant to post it Friday evening, but Life intervened. :P) It's another Christmas story, peripherally; it's also a Brigadier family story, and a full-cast UNIT story, and one of those fabulous Delgado!Master missing episodes that JJ does best of anybody.

Also, it is ALL of the timey-wimey, in the best possible way. I love how every one of the OCs in this story, both timey-wimey-stuff-related and, um, not, is so very thoroughly characterized. I would read remixes of this story from everybody's point of view; if it were on the telly, I would icon it and quote it and write fic of it; to summarize, it is an excellent story and you should read it. If you are a New Whovian, all you need to know is that the Doctor is trapped on earth and cranky about it, and that UNIT are (mostly) not evil but he snarks at them anyway. Also, Liz and Jo are both awesome companions and they both get to kick arse here. WIN.

Story: In Dreams
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3290
Author's Summary: Time Lords don't, by design, dream. But the Doctor is a very different sort of Time Lord.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Eighth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor, the Master (Delgado), the Master (Ainley), the Master (Roberts), the Master (Jacobi), the Master (Simm)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It's a fic that starts with Gallifreyan language, continues with the Doctor waiting for a bus, and has the respective Doctors and Masters - well, challenging each other, or rather, the Doctor challenges himself. And run away from that challenge in the same time. What is there not to absolutely love?

Story: Reminiscence
Author: Memory Dragon
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 990
Author's Summary: Walking through a market place looking for spare parts, the Master finds a reminder of his past on Gallifrey where he least expects it.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Delgado)
Warnings: no standard warnings apply
Recced because: It's a Delgado!Master fic, and I have a soft spot for Delgado!Master (he's my favorite Master). This fic also humanizes the Master as he discovers memories he's forgotten in his quest for spare parts. But in the end the Master's still the Master, and the Master being the Master always puts a smile on my face.

Well, the week is over, but I have one more rec to offer. This time it’s about cake. And why not?

Story: An Ingenious Plan
Author: secooper87
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2326
Author's Summary: Ten. Chained to Three. Naked. With Cake. And the Master. Gallifrey is gone, and so are the spare parts shops that the Doctor needs to fix up his Tardis. Luckily, he's found a way to deal with that!
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Tenth Doctor, Eleventh Doctor, Ninth Doctor, The Master (Delgado)
Warnings: None. Unless – here be cake?

Recced because: There is a sub-genre of Doctor Who whose very existence is fast becoming the stuff of legend.* It involves Ten, naked, chained to Three, and covered in cake, due to the scheming of the Master. And, as yet, an amazing lack of smut.

This one is the latest offering in this mouth-watering category – and not only does it have all the correct ingredients, mixed together in yet another new and ingenious way, but I just love the logical yet crazy and timey-wimey notion that Nine, Ten, and Eleven (due to Gallifrey’s inconvenient non-existence) head straight back to Three’s UNIT lab every time they need a spare part. I mean, you don’t need me to tell you anything further about why that’s brilliant, do you? Other than that, yes, they are all splendidly in character. Multiple Doctors! The Master with a rubbishy plan! Cake! Theft! Enjoy!

(Let me put my hand up and admit that I manage this series on Teaspoon, but I promise I have nothing to do with the origin of it, or any of the fics but one. I just keep things tidy.)

*Well, all right, maybe not, but I’m sure it will be eventually….

Story: Business As Usual
Author: johne
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 12, 945
Author's Summary: The Doctor, Jo and UNIT investigate a haunted house. Oh, and the year is 1793.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Jo Grant, Mike Yates, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, The Master (Delgado)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a splendid, in-character adventure for the UNIT ‘family’ as they investigate a haunted house. As ever, they’re busy saving the world, Jo stays plucky (and keeps up with the latest fashions), the Brigadier arrives in the nick of time, the Doctor complains about the primitive era he’s stuck in, and the Master is up to no good. It’s just that the year happens to be 1793.

The idea behind this being that UNIT dating being as inconsistent as it is, why should it not be more so? Why can’t our heroes at UNIT simply go about their daily business in any decade or century a fanfic author chooses? Which is a brilliant idea, but I think the thing that impresses most about this story is that it isn’t gimmicky – it’s first and foremost, as I said, a marvellous, straight, Three-era adventure. The century, as the premise suggests, is irrelevant, although rest assured, the historical setting is well done, too. Whichever way you look at it, it’s an excellent piece of fanfic!

Story: Lead and Follow
Author: Memory Dragon
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 11,223
Author's Summary: When the Doctor doesn't come to a moon the Master had taken over to stop him, the Master has to come up with a plot to get back the Doctor's attention: Learning how to dance West Coast Swing!
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Delgado)/OC, The Master (Delgado)/ The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (8th),
Warnings:. none

Recced because: My favorite part about reccing is having the chance to highlight a great story that folks might otherwise pass up. On the face of it, this story should be labeled “crack,” but given some of the Master’s absurd plots in canon, is learning West Coast Swing really that far-fetched? . Lizzie, the story’s original character, is well-crafted and interesting, and the plot is engaging. Best of all is the characterization of Delgado!Master, who manages to be sympathetic, charming and evil (if not completely so) all at the same time.

Story: The Master and Mrs. Pond
Author: Memory Dragon
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 13238
Author's Summary: Still waiting for her proper Doctor and Rory to find her again, Amy meets the Doctor's best enemy and gets chased around by a giant purple monster. So much for hearing embarrassing stories of the Doctor's childhood over chocolate!
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Third Doctor, Delgado!Master, Sergeant Benton

Recced because: Though this is technically the sequel to "The Sea Devils and Mrs. Pond," I chose to rec this one instead because I believe that it is in this story that Memory Dragon truly perfects the initiative of its predecessor, in glorious fashion. (And rest assured, "The Master and Mrs. Pond" is perfectly understandable if you haven't read the first one--all you need to know is that Amy is trapped in Three's era in an AU-ish limbo between Jo and Sarah Jane.) How glorious of a fashion, you ask?

Well, this is Amy "Force of Nature" Pond we're talking about here, dropped down into the proper, polite--perhaps even a bit repressed--Third Doctor's run. And in true Amy Pond fashion, she immediately smashes down that annoying line between text and subtext. She makes fun of the Master's TCE, points out that his schemes are rather rubbish, demands to know whether or not the Doctor and he are ex-boyfriends or if it's an unresolved sexual tension thing. Also, she flirts with him, demands chocolate, and nicknames him--well, I better not spoil it for you. Between her brash confidence and the Master's icy reserve, they are the perfect foils for each other. For such a funny fic, the ending is surprisingly and beautifully bittersweet: the Doctor and Amy can hold out hope for the Master, but the reader already knows his future. And both Amy and we know the future of the Doctor.

(Also, in both stories? Amy is working for UNIT. So she is surrounded by soldiers. Men in uniform. She flirts with everyone, and it is the best thing ever.)

Excerpt:

"You'll find the TCE is a much more elegant solution and much easier to clean up," the Master explained, gripping the weapon in his hands tighter. It was the only show of his temper, but it left Amy wondering if she was pushing a bit too far. He was the one with the weapon after all. "You will be shrunk down to a few mere inches, effectively killing you."

"So it shrinks things?" Amy asked, not caring about how far she was pushing him any longer. This was hilarious. "And I thought the bow tie and ruffles were a cry for help. No, that's not compensating for anything."

Story: We Could be Heroes
Author: roachpatrol
Rating: adult
Word Count: 5,605
Author's Summary: Season 6B. The Doctor asks a favor from the Master for Jamie. The Master has a mutually satisfying repayment plan. Two/Delgado!Master/Jamie McCrimmon, plus chocolate.
Characters/Pairings: Two/Delgado!Master/Jamie McCrimmon
Warnings: explicit sex

Recced because: Okay, so I really like Two, and I really like Jamie, and of course the concept of Season 6B is amazing. (For the unfamiliar - the idea is that after Two was captured by the Time Lords, there was a further period where he adventured with Jamie and worked for the Time Lords before regenerating into Three. It's about four parts canon evidence and six parts fannish wishful thinking.) Add to that the fact that I really really like Delgado!Master, and I think you might get why I love this fic so much. It has amazing characterization! It's really sweet and happy and then slightly sad! This is way above your average PWP.

Story: Cake and the Rani
Author: [livejournal.com profile] primsong
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 11,098
Author's Summary: In which the Master takes up baking, Three disapproves of his culinary planning and Ten loses his britches, with the Rani's help. No TARDISes were harmed in the making of this fic.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Sergeant Benton, The Doctor (3rd), The Master (Delgado), The TARDIS, UNIT, The Doctor (10th), The Rani and other characters
Warnings: In spite of the worrying implications of the author's summary, surprisingly none

Recced because: I'll be candid right at the outset and admit that I may have had some tangential involvment in inciting this particular fic, or that at any rate I may have been involved in some of the discussions that led to it being incited. A couple of years ago, on a Doctor Who forum that I frequent, a kind of fictional prompt or challenge arose quite by accident from some chance remarks made by members of the forum. To cut a long story short, people started writing humorous fics with one common premise; they all featured Ten, naked, chained to Three by the Master and both of them covered in cake. Despite the worrying potential, I don't think any of these fics veered into the obvious places you might think from that summary. And so a genre was born. Cakefic. And this story remains one of the premier examples.

Now, I don't expect anybody who wasn't a participant to care at all about the previous paragraph, but I still think they should read this fic. Not only does [livejournal.com profile] primsong manage to take a pretty silly prompt indeed and weave from it a decent, lengthy and not wholly frivolous story, but she does it with such a deft touch and affection for all of the disparate characters involved. I think one of the things that I really respond strongly to in Doctor Who fanfic is the sense you get in some stories of the writer's deep, abiding love for the show and its characters, and especially when it's clear that love extends across more than one era of the show without fear or favour or fan-wankiness. And that's what I get when I read this fic. Ten and Three and the Master and the Rani and the UNIT bods are all drawn with such affection and insight into their essential natures. And there are some telling little moments, like Three's wistful realisation when he sees his future self's TARDIS that his own exile isn't forever, or the Rani's businesslike ruthlessness and her spiky relationship with the Master, even if it's Delgado!Master in this instance. And it's pretty funny indeed. And it features Ten naked, chained to Three and covered in cake. So go and read it.

Story: Fractal
Author: stunt_muppet
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1825
Author's Summary: "Infinity unfolds from even a line. The Doctor's sleeping mind has much to sort through."
Characters/Pairings: Three/Jo, Three/Delgado!Master
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is an amazing piece of mathematical lyrical... awesome. Stunt_Muppet is fantastic at weaving images we've never seen and couldn't perceive if we had, out of the words s/he has to hand. In this instance, it's another Third Doctor post-exile story: a dream world where the Doctor is torn between Jo and the Master, between his earthbound past and the limitless future. Go, read, wonder. :-)

Story: Cold Comfort for Change
Author: birdsarecalling
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 22,575
Author’s Summary: In a universe where the Master works for the Celestial Intervention Agency, the Doctor and his companions inevitably find themselves on the wrong side of the law.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/Delgado!Master, Adelaide Brooke, Original Companions
Warnings: Swearing
Recced because:

This is a story that begins in a zeppelin above an acid lake on an alien world and only gets better from there. If that isn’t enough to sell you, I’m not sure what else I could possibly say to change your mind.

Seriously, though: this fic is an AU wherein the Master (still calling himself Koschei) is an Agent of the CIA, Three has a fully-functional TARDIS, and they end up playing just the cat-and-mouse game you might expect. That would be brilliant enough, but what makes this fic exceptional is the unique Team TARDIS--Adelaide Brooke (much younger and with a wonderfully fleshed-out personality), Mohandas Gandhi, and Gamma, Twenty-Third Chief Executrix of the Google-Exxon Imperium--and the wonderful sense of humor with which it’s written. It’s a wildly enjoyable read, start to finish.

Story: Time Lords Made Us Do It
Author: Bagheera
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 978
Author's Summary: After "End of Time", the Time Lords figure out that their only hope for survival is to give the drums to the Doctor. (Gallifrey crack fic).
Characters/Pairings: Romana 2, Braxiatel, Narvin, Leela, K-9, (various Doctor/Master in the background)

Recced because: Another Doctor/Master fic, but one that distinguishes itself by never actually featuring those characters. As the summary notes, this is a Gallifrey fic, first and foremost, and is largely about those brilliant characters trying to tackle a problem - that problem just happens to be making the Doctor and the Master have sex, something that some characters find discomforting (very funny), and others are completely fine with (also very funny). It's largely dialogue based, which works well in an audio fandom and with such distinct voices, it's well structured, and cleverly punctures the pomposity of much of 'End of Time'.

Excerpt: "Andred once showed me this psychic union you speak of," Leela said thoughtfully. "I was not impressed."

Coordinator Narvin made a horrible grimace that seemed to say: I did not need to know this. Romana privately agreed.

Story: The Amazon
Author: neveralarch
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 9417
Author's Summary: Jo made a poor choice in husbands, the Master made a poor choice in building materials, and the Doctor's gone off in a scarf.
Characters/Pairings: Jo, Delgado!Master/Four
Warnings: Alternate Universe

Recced because: So many wonderful Neverlarch fics to choose from, and really I recommend you read all of them (particularly 'On Her Lady President's Secret Service'), but 'The Amazon' is my most favourite.

More so than any other Master and Companion, Delgado and Jo had an almost amicable relationship. Some of my favourite scenes from the third Doctor's era are between these two characters, but there's far too little (except in the glorious 'Frontier in Space'), but now there's this fic, and it's so joyful and joy-inspiring. The fic's conceit is that Jo ends up as the Master's companion some time post 'Green Death'. They don't get on all that badly, as he's always quite liked her. She's really competent in all the ways Jo was competent in the show (escapology! getting information!) while still being ditzy and Jo-like, but she does keep trying to tell him that he should sort out his relationship with the Doctor (in much the same way that she tried to tell the Doctor this in 'Frontier'), which the Master does not appreciate at all, because he doesn't have a relationship with the Doctor - what's more, doesn't want one! (Jo eye rolls.)

It then proceeds through the events of 'Deadly Assassin' (another v good serial), but because the Master has Jo there to point out his mistakes and irritate him, things take a different turn. This is a very clever, very funny story (the Master's POV, often in direct opposition to his dialouge) about an unlikely friendship, the difficulties of being Jo Grant, and what happens when the Doctor and the Master finally listen to her advice.

Excerpt:
"You!" said the Doctor once he was close enough to be heard without shouting. "I should have known."

"Yes, my dear Doctor, me." The Master threw his cloak off altogether and swung the staser pistol concealed under it to point at Jo. "And I've got one of your abandoned companions with me as well."

"Jo? Jo, what are you doing with him?" The Doctor stepped forward into the sudden chaos of people running away from the gun, but the Master stopped him with a shake of the head.

"No, keep back. I'm a little over-tired, and you wouldn't want to make me act rashly."

"So this was your plan all along," said Jo. "Master, I thought we were friends! You took me shopping!"
