Story: The Sacred Art of Stealing
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 458
Author's Summary: A very serious and in no way silly story in which the Doctor attempts to pinch Sarah Jane's companions.
Characters/Pairings: The Tenth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Maria Jackson, Clyde Langer
Warnings: None

Recced because: When I learned that Calufrax now allows you to rec fics that were previously recced more than two years ago, I knew I just had to throw in some old favorites. This fic, recced back in 2008, is still just as funny and enjoyable as when it was first written. The Tenth Doctor is in search of new companions, and where better to go than to Sarah Jane, who conveniently has some already-trained teenagers at the ready?

Story: Family Tree
Author: MinervaFan
Rating: All Ages

Characters/Pairings: Alan Jackson, Chrissie Jackson, Maria Jackson, Clyde Langer, Natalie Redfern, Sarah Jane Smith, Joshua Townsend.
Warnings: Spoilers for all the Sarah Jane Smith audios.

Recced because: MinervaFan can always be relied on for a good story, and this is no exception: the warmth and affection between the characters practically springs off the page.  The focus of this story is family in all its forms - biological, adopted, chosen, and everything in between - and the emotions involved are nuanced and complex, from Sarah Jane's insecurity about getting Luke's first Christmas just right, to a snapshot of Alan and Chrissie's improving relationship.  All in all, a perfect Christmas fic.

Story: Long-Distance Phone Calls
Author: Settiai
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3340
Author's Summary: One of these years, Fitz Kreiner was going to learn not to answer his phone.
Characters/Pairings: Alan Jackson, Fitz Kreiner, Maria Jackson, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None.
Recced because: One of the first stories I recced in this community was Settiai's Rebuilding a Life, an epic NCIS crossover in which Fitz Kreiner was stranded in Washington and ended up in a relationship with one of the characters. This is a non-crossover sequel which doesn't draw on the NCIS background or characters; instead it has Fitz running into Maria Jackson and finally renewing contact with Sarah Jane Smith. A nice slightly angsty story, which also deals with some old-Who canon issues.

This is my last rec of the week!  It's been fun sharing stories with you all, and I hope you have an awesome rest of the summer (or winter, for the readers down below)!

Story: Carbon, Earth, and Stardust
Author: Rutsky
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2731
Author's Summary: She'd been to the stars and was now of the earth. Luke Smith waits for the world to start again.
Characters/Pairings: Clyde, Luke, Maria, Rani, Sarah Jane, the Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: None
Recced because: This is a lovely story coming in the wake of Elisabeth Sladen's real life death, examining how the parallel loss of Sarah Jane affects the characters who knew her. Rutsky handles it very carefully, respectfully, and gracefully, and it's very bittersweet--in reflecting on her loss, her friends and family also remember and celebrate her life.

Story: Open Door Policy
Author: CyTheWriter
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3282
Author's Summary: Martha explains a few things to Maria, and learns the temptations of open doors.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Maria Jackson; hints of Martha/Maria, Sarah Jane/Maria (one-sided)
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: I'm a sucker for any fic that crosses over the SJA crew with the Doctor's companions. This fic not only does that, but it presents a totally different take on the mentor/student relationship that is too easy to fall into when writing about the SJA gang. This particular story explores Maria's quasi-canon crush on Sarah Jane (no easy feat, even when Maria is older, as she is in this fic); Martha finds herself in a curious role somewhere between friend, big sister figure, and suddenly, possibly, something more. The two characters may not be on equal ground, but they're both in unexplored territory, and the tension is built deliciously and believably. I also love the way the author incorporates Torchwood and specifically Jack, who never appears but inevitably comes up in conversation.

Author's Summary: Some time after she moves to America, Maria Jackson gets wrapped up in mysterious temporal events and Sarah Jane's past.
Characters/Pairings: Alan Jackson, Maria Jackson, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's nice to see Maria in America and it's interesting and fun to see her with the Fourth Doctor. It's also a good plot and, since it's written for the girl saves boy ficathon, it's good to see Maria saving the world, with the Doctor helping.

Story: Conserved Relationships in the Sum over Histories
Author: Lurky McLurklurk
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1826
Author's Summary: Rani/Maria futurefic. Or one-of-many-possible-futures fic, anyway. (Also background Luke/Clyde.)
Characters/Pairings: Rani Chandra/Maria Jackson
Warnings: None

Recced because: There's a certain genre of fic out there that probably has a specific term to describe it, but since I don't know the term, I'll call it "let's pair these two characters who never met in canon and see what happens" fic. At first glance, this may seem like one of those fics. But it's not. Or rather, it is, but it's also much, much more.

You see, in Sarah Jane Adventures canon, both Rani and Maria encountered a puzzle-box that keeps people from experiencing the effects of changes in the timeline. Lurky McLurklurk takes that fact and runs with it, telling a tale of what it's like to live your life while around you timelines change, and your memories change with them, but still you're somehow aware of what's going on. The story is very well written, and absolutely fascinating to read, but the icing on the cake is the beautiful portrayal of the Rani/Maria romance (who are both adults in the fic). In the end, this is a story of truly timeless love, and it makes me sad that Rani and Maria never did properly meet in canon. But at least we have this fanfic.

Story: We'll Find a New Equation
Author: averita
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2140
Author's Summary: Luke's third night here, she'd woken at half two in the morning to the sound of quiet footsteps on creaking stairs; her sonic lipstick was in her hand and she was halfway out of bed before she remembered.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Maria Jackson

Recced because: So, I was debating between three different stories for my second-to-last rec, when suddenly this one popped up on my radar. And holy crap, if it wasn't the cutest freaking thing ever.

I think we can all agree, based completely on empirical evidence, that the Smiths are the most adorable family on television. But they don't win that distinction by being all good times and fair sailing. This story perfectly captures the family atmosphere in early SJA--Luke: hesitant and uncertain about what's okay to do, clearly looking up to Sarah Jane as his savior but not certain how to relate to her; Sarah Jane: torn between her affection for him and her deeply-ingrained reserve, wanting to do her best for him but terrified that she can't. And Maria is fierce and uncompromising in best Maria fashion, calling out Sarah Jane on just how ready she is to find an excuse to believe that she can't be a good mother, to run away from connections to other people, with all that attendant responsibility and vulnerability.

All in all, a great snapshot of early SJA, keeping true to the tone of the show but with more room for detailed emotional exploration. And with just the right blend of heartache and heartwarming.

Excerpt:

It's been two weeks, two awkward, stilted weeks that have gone by like a dream. Everything's done and dusted - papers forged to perfection and signed, the spare room decorated and closet filled with clothes that Maria has assured them both will help Luke fit in with other kids their age. She's kept Luke occupied most of the time, exploring the town (Sarah Jane forgets, sometimes, that she's in a new environment too) and gently teasing him, teaching him things that he won't learn at school or at home. Their home, Sarah Jane thinks, and grips the edge of the table.

Story: The Hitchhiker's Guide to Surviving a Dalek Invasion
Author: atraphoenix
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1038
Author's Summary: Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz was having a very bad day. The planet he had been ordered to demolish appeared to have disappeared.
[A The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy crossover.]
Characters/Pairings: Alan Jackson, Maria Jackson, various Daleks, various characters from HG2G.
Warnings: None

Recced because: In the middle of the Dalek invasion of Journey's End/The Stolen Earth, Ford Prefect and Zaphod Beeblebrox concentrate on the important things, like another drink; Arthur isn't surprised; Marvin finds someone to talk to, and everyone fits right in. This perfectly captures the tone of the books and works so brilliantly that I'm convinced it was happening just off-screen. The native characters are written just as well, and I love Alan's observations on what his daughter has learned from Sarah Jane.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1,244
Author's Summary: Five conversations about something else.
Characters/Pairings: Luke Smith, Clyde Lander, Rani Chandra, Sarah Jane Smith, Maria Jackson (,K-9)
Warnings: None

Recced because: Good friendships fics are always a treasure, and in this Macadamanaity captured the friendship between the SJA gang perfectly. On the surface, Luke has finally learned the art of practical jokes and is testing his new ability on his old friends. Peel it a bit more and you get a wonderful depiction of friendship that is true to the characters and to the stories they are usually in.

I'm [livejournal.com profile] ffutures (Marcus Rowland on Teaspoon), and I'll be reccing from May 2nd to the 8th. Story: Every Jumped-Up Agency
Author: Livii
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1645
Author's Summary: Not even an alien invasion's straightforward at 13 Bannerman Road.
Characters/Pairings: Clyde Langer, Harry Sullivan, Luke Smith, Maria Jackson, Owen Harper, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings:None
Recced because: With the recent death of Elisabeth Sladen I particularly wanted to begin with a story that featured Sarah Jane Smith, but with a fun story rather than angst. Eventually I found this, a nice example of the humorous possibilities of tampering with the fabric of space and time.
[identity profile] dbskyler.livejournal.com
Yesterday we lost a member of the Doctor Who family: the lovely Elisabeth Sladen, who portrayed Sarah Jane Smith, one of the most popular characters in the history of the Whoniverse. In light of this sad event, I tried to think of what kind of fic I myself would want to read today, and came up with the choice below. It's one of the first fics I ever read on Teaspoon, and it's still an all-time favorite of mine. It brings me comfort today, and I hope it does the same for you:

Story: The Stardust Trail Leading Back to You
Author: queenofhearts
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1499
Author's Summary: The night sky exploded with diamonds; a sea of white hot sparks that hung in the air for a split second, motionless.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, Eighth Doctor, Maria Jackson, Luke Smith, Clyde Langer
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Eighth Doctor happens across Sarah Jane, who is watching fireworks with Maria, Luke and Clyde. (Although the teens appear in the fic, no knowledge of Sarah Jane Adventures is needed -- I hadn't seen the show when I first read this.) The writing is descriptive and lyrical, weaving the scene and then immersing us in it until we're carried along with the characters, enjoying their reunion. But what really sets this fic apart is the ending, as the author steps back and leaves the scene to the Doctor and Sarah, and to them alone. All we know is that whatever happened, it made the Doctor happy. We're left to invent the details, but rather than being frustrating, the ambiguity makes it a perfect little moment, residing forever within our imaginations.

Recced because: For my final choice I wanted my all-time favourite characters, the Third Doctor and Sarah Jane but made a mistake in the search and this popped out. And having read it I decided I could manage without the Doctor for the sake of the Loch Ness Monster, some excellent character studies, and another glimpse of the Brigadier.

Story: Operation Awesome

Author: AND

Rating:

Word Count:
13,980

Author's Summary:
Does Donna really need to remember her travels with the Doctor to unlock the confidence and strength she found on her travels with him? Doesn't that suggest that there's something wrong with living on Earth? Sarah Jane and Torchwood gang up to save Donna - one way or another.

Characters/Pairings:
Alan Jackson, Clyde Langer, Donna Noble, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Luke Smith, Maria Jackson, Mickey Smith, Other Character(s), Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (Author Created).... phew...

Warnings:
None, although a touch of language near the beginning.

Recced because:

I love this story. Period. It's a Donna-centric AU, where Team TARDIS get a bit narked that the Doctor wiped Donna's memories, and try to help her as much as they can. After they find her a job, Donna does a little bit of Donna-iness, and she slowly puts her life back together again. Yes, I know that it's been recced before, but seriously, it's worth reccing twice. Watch out for the suprise twist ending :-) A great story, with incredible characterisations.

Story: The Ghost of Christmas Always
Author: [livejournal.com profile] minerva_fan
Rating: Teen
Word count: 5087
Author's summary: Maria and Sarah Jane manage to spend Christmases together, despite the distance between them. Implied Maria/SJS crushing.
Characters/Pairings: SJS, Maria, Luke, Clyde
Warnings: Character death (but not a bad sort of character death)

Recced because: A completely unseasonal rec, but I don't care. This is a wonderful fic, jumping forward through a selection of Christmases over thirty years to show the SJA gang's futures through Maria's point of view. The characterisation is deftly handled, making it feel completely canonical to me, to be honest (while YMMV about the existence of Maria's crush, I'm completely convinced of it, so).

What I particularly love about it, though, is the way that with a few carefully chosen descriptions, [livejournal.com profile] minerva_fan captures the essential feel of not only SJA ("Luke has never seen fit to improve on Sarah Jane's somewhat anachronistic method of hiding the key. It's as if the mere act of living like nobody would find a key under a plant will somehow make it true."), but some wildly different parts of canon that Sarah's been involved in as well, and makes it all seem part of a seamless whole. Which, of course, it is, from some very old school stuff about themagic of the TARDIS to the new school excesses of there being aliens every Christmas. Lovely stuff.

Recced because: Four meeting Sarah's teenage companions! I mean, do I really have to say anything else to sell this?

Actually, this is a companion story to another of [livejournal.com profile] minerva_fan's fics, but it stands quite fine on it's own.

Author's summary: Jack Harkness really wasn't expecting to see Sarah Jane Smith behind door number one.
Characters/Pairings: Jack, Ianto, Gwen, Sarah Jane, Clyde, Luke, Maria
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~2,500 words

Recced because: This is sweet, fresh, and fun. Set after S2 of TW and S1 of SJA (so it's a bit scrambled by S4 of DW, but never mind that), Jack tries to recover a dangerous alien artifact and is rather surprised to meet Sarah Jane and her gang of teenagers, especially her teenage son, Luke. All the character voices are spot-on, with Ianto's internal observations on the whole thing especially hilarious, and the dialogue just sparkles. A very enjoyable piece.

Characters/Pairings: Josh Townsend, Natalie Redfern, Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Maria Jackson, Clyde Langer
Warnings: Spoilers for Turn Left.

Recced because: In Friends of a Friend, MinervaFan takes the AU "right turn" scenario and uses it as an opportunity to explore Josh Townsend, Sarah Jane Smith, and the very-Sarah-Jane-theme of picking up the pieces when one's world has changed. The result is a unique and seamless melding of the Sarah Jane Adventures and the Sarah Jane Smith Audio Stories, with excellent characterizations throughout.

Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Sarah Jane Smith, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Ianto Jones, Mickey Smith, Clyde Langer, Luke Smith, Maria Jackson, Alan Jackson, Wilfred Mott, Other Character(s) - including some surprise Old-School companions
Warnings: None

Reason for Recommendation: Donna Noble is awesome. It's as simple as that. And so is Team TARDIS, or more properly the Doctor's 'biggest family in the universe'. AND set out to prove, in this story, that there is nothing less awesome about being a human being, living a life on Earth, than there is about travelling in the TARDIS with the Doctor. With or without the Doctor, with or without her memories of being with him Donna is awesome and has potential to be more awesome still. Oh, and the Doctor is a complete wanker - and that's a direct quote. I absolutely love the team effort in this story, from the Torchwood gang to Sarah Jane's crew to Martha and assorted others (Mickey and Jack's early conversation is side-splittingly hilarious), and the way they combine to - metaphorically - bang the Doctor's head against the wall of his own emo. AND writes Donna brilliantly too. Watch for Donna's meeting with the baby-faced man from Wales - and my favourite scene, close to the end, with the wonderful Wilf.

Recced because: The recent [livejournal.com profile] dw_femslash ficathon produced some fantastic fic, and I'm probably going to end up reccing a fair bit of it! This one wasn't a pairing I'd have imagined enjoying before, but was unexpectedly completely lovely and this fic makes it work perfectly. It's sweet, poignant and fun, with great characterization and voices for all three main characters. Characters: Sarah Jane, Luke, Clyde, Maria, Alan, The Doctor (10th), Turlough

Recced Because: A fun, endearing, and cracky story deserves to be appreciated. In Altered States, Sarah Jane announces her wedding without sharing the groom's identity. Clyde, Luke, Maria, and Alan attempt to solve the mystery, while the Doctor arrives to cause a disruption.

"It began quite simply with Sarah announcing over tea that she was getting married. Luke was not amused."

Characters/Pairings: Clyde Langer/Luke Smith, Maria Jackson, Harry Sullivan/Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith/John Benton, Emily Chaudry/Francis Currie
Warnings: None

Recced because: For one thing, there is not nearly enough fanfiction that features the characters from The Sarah Jane Adventures, and there is not nearly enough fanfiction that features the characters from Big Finish's UNIT audios, and there is not nearly enough fanfiction that features characters from both, and draws on Doctor Who's long history with such precision and excellent characterisation and makes it all so fun. Recced because: Because it's utterly silly. Yet still in keeping with the tone of Doctor Who and SJA. There's quite a few characters and quite a short story, yet they still all have their own role in it. I really liked the kids' reactions to seeing a police box and meeting the Doctor.

Recommended because: I'm a sucker for companions who become more Doctorish than the fellow himself, and the vision of a weary (but quietly smug) Sarah telling Ten to bog off as he attempts to half-inch her kids is a peach. Short, daft, and funny. (And given the apparent casting situation for SJA season 2, I'm declaring the final paragraph canon.)

recced because: There is a criminal lack of Sarah Jane Adventure fic so when one pops up that highlights the charming chemistry between the characters and the fun, wacky dynamic they share, it's worth sharing. Ellisbelle crafted an amusing, light fic that touches on slash, femslash but, most of all, on the bond between the characters that even a few years beyond the series, just sparkles. If you've not yet seen SJA, this fic is a nice introduction to the characters, if you have, this will make you laugh out loud.
