Hello again! I'm here to rec all the way up to Christmas and the Christmas special, so let's go! I wanted to rec this fic the last time I recced here, but I hit my maximum number of recs. Here it is now:

Story: Venusian Aikido and Associated Disciplines
Author: Sproid
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1631
Author's Summary: Featuring Benton learning fancy karate from the Doctor, and an annoyed Brigadier who keeps walking in on them with their hands all over each other.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/John Benton, Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart/John Benton/Third Doctor, Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart/John Benton, Corporal Bell/Jo Grant, John Benton/Mike Yates
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: I love the interactions between Three and the UNIT crew featured here. I also like how the fic features Three's signature* Venusian aikido and shows him teaching it to others, not against the Villain of a Serial. And a jealous Brig tickles my id.

Venusian aikido is mostly featured in Three's serials, but other Doctors have used it in expanded material

Story: Home?
Author: vvj5
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 8360 words
Author's Summary: Donna asks a reasonable question and the Doctor bends the laws of Time and Space to answer it. Which obviously involves two Doctors, UNIT, the Master and a nasty mess in the space/time continuum.
Characters/Pairings: The Third Doctor, the Tenth Doctor, the Master (Delgado), Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Donna Noble, Jo Grant, John Benton, Mike Yates
Warnings: None stated

Recced because: I love this story! The various interactions between the characters are hilarious and their voices spot on. I must confess to a special fondness for The Brig and Donna interacting with each other. I think they would have got along wonderfully if they ever had had a chance to meet. But there are several delightful scenes here, the Doctors bickering with each other, Jo realising that Ten is the Doctor and the Doctors joining forces to annoy the Master, for example.

Story: United Resistance
Author: mercury64
Rating: All Ages on Teaspoon; I would probably say "Teen" if it were my own fic
Word Count: 4,973
Author's Summary: What is the strange object that has crash landed in the north of Scotland? What connects it to a similar incident in the Russian Ural Mountains? What really happened at Tunguska in 1908? Will Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and U.N.I.T. find out the truth?
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, John Benton, Mike Yates, Other Character(s), UNIT
Warnings: Some combat-related violence and descriptions of same, in one instance self-administered

Recced because: As sincere as my admiration is for what I have seen of the Twelfth Doctor up to now, there is one issue where I cannot in all conscience agree with his position. I think somebody once said something about hating the game rather than the player, and while I certainly agree with the Doctor that war and war-related activities are to be avoided if at all possible, and are definitely not to be encouraged, I can't really get alongside the blanket condemnation of soldiers. What, after all, was the Brigadier if not the most soldierly soldier ever to wear the uniform? And while they may not always have agreed on methods and approaches, the Brig and the Doctor were, I think it is fair to say, pretty fast friends after a certain point, and forever after.

You see, I've always had a certain sympathy for the Brig and the UNIT boys. As much as I love the characters and admire the stories in which they appear during the Two, Three and Four eras, they seem to spend a lot of time as stooges and fall-guys, making the Doctor look clever and capable at their expense. And when it actually comes to action against alien threats, they tend not to fare too well. Admittedly, they are fighting well out of their weight class most of the time, but I think I prefer it when they show at least a modicum of professionalism and competence.

And that, to come finally to the point, is the reason I really like this fic. It gives us a glimpse at classic UNIT in action without the Doctor to call upon (he's off on another jaunt, possibly to Peladon or somewhere), and they actually manage to survive and do a reasonably credible job. They don't exactly come to grips fully with the particular extraterrestrial menace they're facing, and they end up resorting to methods that would probably earn a scornful rebuke from the Doctor if he were on the scene, but in the Brig's own words from Battlefield, they do the best they can. The author also clearly has a bit of knowledge of matters military and brings it to bear providing the kind of small details that make the UNIT operation portrayed here seem very believable. The fic is also very nicely written with lots of great little character touches (of course Mike Yates would blithely get his African countries completely mixed up, and of course Sgt Benton seems to be two steps behind everybody else, while the Brig portrayed here is definitely the harder-edged less cuddly Brig of Season 7), some fun OCs (I chuckled a bit at the names used for the various lower-ranking UNIT soldiers) and a pleasing cameo from another Who supporting character who wasn't part of the UNIT years but has been linked with them in the spinoff media.

All this, and references to "real"-life "world of the unexplained" type goings-on too. Take a look, and if you like it (if you're a UNIT well-wisher, I'm sure you will), leave some words of appreciation for the author.

Story: Found

Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4,605
Author's Summary: The Brigadier has his hands full when an alien escape pod lands.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart/Liz Shaw, Captain Yates, Jo Grant, Third Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: UNIT is used to dealing with the strange and unusual, but not always peacefully ... which makes the arrival of an alien baby more than a little confounding, especially for the Brigadier. He might have a daughter of his own, but that doesn't necessarily make him comfortable dealing with an alien infant, and his substitute for a temporarily absent Doctor – Liz Shaw – isn't entirely happy at being drawn back into UNIT's unique brand of chaos, either. (Not in the least because it reminds her of certain inappropriate feelings she'd had for her supervisor.) But the plot isn't why you should read this story, although it's a good one; no, you should read it because it's really a sweet-natured character piece with emotional depth for both the Brig and Liz, written with such thoughtful attention to voice that I had no trouble hearing each character speak in my head.

Hello, everyone! I'll be reccing for you this week! For anyone who doesn't recognise the username, I'm known as TheRelativeDimension over on Gallifrery Base, and you might have seen some of my fan fiction under the name Samuel Marks. Anyway, enough about me. Let's get started!

Story: Yuletide, with Bars of Iron
Author: King Rat
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1295
Author's Summary: The Doctor always feels most despondent about his captivity on these cold, clear nights. Can anything break him out of his despair?
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Jo Grant, Liz Shaw, Mike Yates, Sergeant Benton, The Doctor (3rd), The TARDIS, UNIT
Warnings: None

Recced because: I have some good news for you all - there are only 98 days until Christmas! I bet that cheered you up, didn't it? So, to celebrate, here's a brilliantly sweet festive tale for you all.

Modern Doctor Who is so inextricably linked with Christmas that it seems hard to imagine how (or why) the Classic series didn't often refer to it. I never thought of the Third Doctor sipping mulled wine as he sits beneath a Christmas tree and opens his presents. But as it turns out, that's sort of what he did...

Aaand I fear I have only four recs for you this week, O tolerant Calufraxians. *ducks vegetables* I could have sworn I had five! But when I double-checked, one of them (and my favorite of the lot, if I could pick a favorite - TigerKat's Torchwood/Howl's Moving Castle crossover What Planet Are You From?) had already been recced! I don't know how I missed that the first time; I maintain that some timey-wimey reccer snuck it in when I wasn't looking. ;P

Anyway. Last fic of the week!

Story: A Ghost Story for Christmas
Author: JJPOR
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 28,991
Author's Summary: It's Christmastime; a time for family, and memories, and ghosts, even if you're the Doctor. Especially if you're the Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Delgado!Master, Jo Grant, Sgt Benton, Mike Yates, Liz Shaw, Brig/Doris, UNIT
Warnings: None

Recced because: Here is a nice long story suitable for weekend reading. (I swear I meant to post it Friday evening, but Life intervened. :P) It's another Christmas story, peripherally; it's also a Brigadier family story, and a full-cast UNIT story, and one of those fabulous Delgado!Master missing episodes that JJ does best of anybody.

Also, it is ALL of the timey-wimey, in the best possible way. I love how every one of the OCs in this story, both timey-wimey-stuff-related and, um, not, is so very thoroughly characterized. I would read remixes of this story from everybody's point of view; if it were on the telly, I would icon it and quote it and write fic of it; to summarize, it is an excellent story and you should read it. If you are a New Whovian, all you need to know is that the Doctor is trapped on earth and cranky about it, and that UNIT are (mostly) not evil but he snarks at them anyway. Also, Liz and Jo are both awesome companions and they both get to kick arse here. WIN.

Story: Business As Usual
Author: johne
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 12, 945
Author's Summary: The Doctor, Jo and UNIT investigate a haunted house. Oh, and the year is 1793.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Jo Grant, Mike Yates, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, The Master (Delgado)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a splendid, in-character adventure for the UNIT ‘family’ as they investigate a haunted house. As ever, they’re busy saving the world, Jo stays plucky (and keeps up with the latest fashions), the Brigadier arrives in the nick of time, the Doctor complains about the primitive era he’s stuck in, and the Master is up to no good. It’s just that the year happens to be 1793.

The idea behind this being that UNIT dating being as inconsistent as it is, why should it not be more so? Why can’t our heroes at UNIT simply go about their daily business in any decade or century a fanfic author chooses? Which is a brilliant idea, but I think the thing that impresses most about this story is that it isn’t gimmicky – it’s first and foremost, as I said, a marvellous, straight, Three-era adventure. The century, as the premise suggests, is irrelevant, although rest assured, the historical setting is well done, too. Whichever way you look at it, it’s an excellent piece of fanfic!

Word Count: 4,794
Author's Summary: Donna Noble's stuck inside her own head. What she needs is a little escapology. (Donna/Jo Grant)
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble/Jo Grant, Sylvia Grant, Wilfred Mott, Mike Yates, Shaun Temple
Warnings: none

Recced because: This fic is adorable. I feel like 'Donna meets old companion' may be a trope (and one that I've written recently, hm), but this is the defining one of those fics for me. Partly this fic is about Donna coming back from having her memory taken by the Doctor, partly it's about what Jo does as she gets older, and there's a tiny bit in there that's somehow about Mike Yates and is so good. This whole fic is so good - a really nice melding of new and old school Who.

Story: Turn Your Back
Author: Singe
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 21943
Author's Summary: The Eleventh Doctor had a simple philosophy about public nudity. "If it embarrasses you, turn your back." Hmmm, what about the other Doctors? Here are ten humorous vignettes with a central theme of nakie-ness.
Characters/Pairings: Doctors 1 through 10 and various companions (ETA for the intrepid calufrax tagger: Susan, Ian, Barbara, Victoria, Jamie, Liz Shaw, Brigadier, Mike Yates, John Benton, Sarah Jane, Adric, Tegan, Nyssa, Melanie Bush, Ace, Jo Grant, Martha Jones)
Warnings: Swearing
Recced because: Honestly, how can you pass up a story with that summary? Do you need more? Okay, it's ten stories that go effortlessly from era to era, that are quirky and imaginative and funny and outlandish. They are also well-written and fun, inducing a little bit of ear reddening blushes at times, but also exploring concepts of friendship, acceptance, vulnerability, and the tendency of the Doctor to gravitate to gift shops in more ways than one. And well, if it's not your cuppa you can always turn your back...

Characters/Pairings: Jo Grant, Mike Yates, Sergeant Benton, The Doctor (3rd)
Warnings: None

Recced because: July is the perfect time to read Christmas fic. This one mixes up some sweet scenes with Jo and the Third Doctor and the alien, along with some funny scenes as the Doctor plays Santa. It still manages to be just the sort of thing UNIT would get mixed up in as well.

Story: Only Visiting This Planet

Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Jo Grant, Liz Shaw, Mike Yates, Sergeant Benton, The Doctor (3rd)

Warnings: Character Deaths

Recced because: I've lost count of the number of times I've read this story, and yet it *still* makes me cry every time. It's a beautifully written look at Liz post-UNIT, that's funny and moving by turns, and vvj5 has all the characters' voices spot on. Plus, the alien is interesting.

“So what is it you wanted to say?”

The girl was sitting forward on the other chair, her hands around the mug of tea, but she hadn’t drunk any yet. “It’s difficult. I thought — tonight — I thought you might understand, but it all sounds so mad. I shouldn’t have come.”

“Try me,” said Liz, smiling at her. “If I’d told the truth back there, everyone else would have thought I was mad too. Why don’t you start with your name and move on to the rest?”

She coloured. “Janey Lewis. I’ve got an alien in my head.”

Story: Keeping Secrets

Word Count: 2550
Author's Summary: A character study of Captain Mike Yates and Sergeant John Benton. The hows and whys and secrets and circumstances of their relationship.
Characters/Pairings: Mike Yates/Sergeant Benton, The Doctor (3rd)
Warnings: Explicit Sex. (I'd also add that it contains references to underage sex.)

Recced because: Taking a quick break from BFA recs because I love this story so much. The best character backstories make the canon itself make more sense - Keeping Secrets does that for not only Mike Yates, but also Benton. The voices are great, the writing is beautiful, and suddenly Invasion of the Dinosaurs makes a little bit more sense.

Story: The Unexpected Storm
Author: Gabriel Chase
Rating: Teen (for swearing)
Word Count: 1,455
Author’s Summary: Benton is transferring the Master to a new secure location, when a cloudburst causes more problem for UNIT's most beleaguered of soldiers.
Characters/Pairings: Benton, the Master (Delgado), Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Yates
Warnings: None

Recced because:  It seemed a nice day to rec something for those who would like a light, enjoyable read over their lunch and this is one that fits the bill.  It is always a delight to find a good classic era fic, and with both the loyal Benton and Delgado’s suave Master being personal favorites, a story that places just the two of them together was irresistible.
The author does a fine job in this short story of keeping both completely in character; I could almost see those little disapproving quirks of the Master’s face as he offered his opinions of the available entertainment as well as his dignified plotting against the good-hearted but cautious Sergeant.  Can UNIT hold the Master, or have they bitten off more than they can chew?  A good dose of UNIT adventure for a May afternoon, perfect with a cup of tea.

My final rec for the week... I hope that you've enjoyed some of the stories I selected. It's been a pleasure sharing my favorites here!

Story: Home
Author: ClocketPatch
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 8893
Author's Summary: "Home is where the heart is, though sometimes we're too busy trying to run away to recognise it."
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (9th), Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Harry Sullivan, Jo Grant, Mike Yates, John Benton, UNIT
Warnings: Angst, Dark Themes, Swearing

Recced because: This fic features the intriguing combination of Three and Nine and there are four reasons why it is a standout for me: 1) the vividness of the imagery, particularly in the opening scenes; 2) the brilliant dialogue, which captures not only what these characters would say, but the exact manner in which they would say it; 3) the connections to tiny details from both New and Classic Who; and, 4) the intensity of story, dark, with raw emotion and such anguish. This story hurts, but it is so very worth the read.

Story: Between the Lines
Author: Infiniteviking
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 984
Author's Summary: It's easy for the Doctor to drop out of sight. It's somewhat harder for him to come back. Short, angsty oneshot set after The Five Doctors.
Characters/Pairings: Mike Yates, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (5th)
Warnings: Spoilers for 'The Five Doctors'.

As my second rec for the day, here's a barely under 1k story set after 'The Five Doctors'. And it just about breaks my heart in a bittersweet way, because it's the Fifth Doctor after all that mess with Omega and he's come to see Sarah Jane; and after the way they originally parted in his previous regeneration, he's bound to be a little nervous after all that time.

The writing of the Doctor and the wonderful details and description (and Yates!) make this a welcome post-episode fic to an often dismissed adventure.

Characters/Pairings: Liz/Brig, Mike Yates, Sergeant Benton, The Third Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: This story, along with it's companion piece No More Than A Feeling, is an excellent look at Liz Shaw's all too brief time at UNIT. It tallies perfectly with canon, and fleshes out what we saw onscreen in a beautifully believable way. I struggled to choose between the two, but, in the end, my love for all things Liz won out. (The other story - which views events from the Brig's perspective - is well worth a look as well, of course.)

. I know I’ve already recc’d a UNIT fic, but *blushes* anyone who knows me knows how I love my Threefic. This is a glorious classic series romp which reads like a lost episode. The characters, the situations (the solutions to those situations) … etc. are all spot on UNIT era. I recommend this fic to Three fans who want to have a bit of fun, to NuWho fans who are curious about what UNIT was like back in the homespun days, and, generally, to anyone with an appreciation for good writing and a strong plot. This story was inspired by the madness which is the kinkmeme. I think it’s nicely summed up by its original prompt: ‘When the Brigadier's moustache falls off mid-shag, years of trust and loyalty are undermined. Luckily, all is well thanks to Mike Yates, Jo Grant's mother and a tin of Spam.’

How can you go wrong with that???

This was only posted a few days ago, and I’m bumping off one of my original recs to fit it in. But rec it I must, because this is one of the funniest things I have ever read. The majority of the humour comes – not from the ridiculous situations – but from the ridiculously in-character reactions: Poor, clueless, and utterly betrayed Benton, Scarred-for-life Yates who has been wrangled into the role of unwilling relationship therapist, and dear sweet Jo who knows more than she’s letting on. And, of course, the stalwart Brig.

Recced because: I'm always fascinated by fics that examine how characters from classic who deal with events in the new series, and this is one the best showing the UNIT characters from the Third Doctors era during the events of The Christmas Invasion and it is lovely. The Brigadier's frustration at not being able to do more and Jo's belief in the Doctor even decades later seemed particularly in character to me.

Author's Summary: When a warehouse burns to the ground for no apparent reason - and the only living witness claims to have seen fire-breathing demons - the Doctor and Jo become embroiled in a deadly confrontation against an opponent who knows them only too well.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Jo Grant, Mike Yates, Sergeant Benton, Third Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's really difficult to find good, long UNIT era stories, but this one is a shining example of how awesome they can be if done right. The premise is basic enough: a fire draws the attention of UNIT to a possible alien connection. The story's much more than that, though. The plot is intriguing and tightly woven, keeping the reader thinking until the end, and it provides a wonderful look at the relationships between the various characters. It reminds me very much of an actual old school serial, which is always a good thing in my book.
