Story: Nameless
Author: dbskyler
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 565
Author's Summary: "Even the word 'Doctor' is false. Your real name is hidden. It burns in the stars, in the Cascade of Medusa herself."
Characters/Pairings: Other Character(s), Susan Foreman, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: none

Recced because: I've read some very good stories that address the issue of why the Doctor hasn't revealed his real name. This one, which is described as an "experiment" by the author in reply to a review, is a wonderful character study written in an unusual style that really works. Various characters from the First Doctor era through the Tenth Doctor era are mentioned as the story builds to a beautiful finale. The last couple of lines make a perfect ending.

Story: Type 40
Author: dbskyler
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 651
Author's Summary: The latest release in TT Capsule technology: the Type 40!
Characters/Pairings: The TARDIS
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It's fun! A short satirical advertisement for the Doctor's beloved Type 40 model. Read it because your day can never have too much laughter or too many inexplicable roundels in it.

Story: That One Time Gita Chandra Saved the Earth with Roses
Author: dbskyler
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 760
Author's Summary: Throop had never before met an opponent like Gita.
Characters/Pairings: Gita Chandra
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's Gita being blind when it comes to aliens, which is fun enough on its own, but what makes this story stand out particularly is that it's written from the alien's point of view. Even though he describes things differently to how we would, we can still tell exactly what is going on.

Story: It Doesn’t Go “Ding” When There’s Stuff
Author: dbskyler
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 313
Author's Summary: The Tenth Doctor tries out his new Zygon detector.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: I was trying not to rec this recent little gem – I had a full list of recs already! It came about due to something I said! – but then realised that of course that was foolish and that I needed to share this delightful, funny fic (that is clearly and obviously a missing scene from The Day of the Doctor that merely had to be deleted due to the constraints of time and reality). Anyway, as it happens, what I said was that the special was lacking in penguins. This is no longer the case, and isn’t it marvellous?

Story: Break of Day
Author: dbskyler
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1116
Author's Summary: The Eleventh Doctor has some questions for Sarah about aunts and orphans.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: Spoilers for The Eleventh Hour.

Recced because: It’s a lovely and amusing missing scene for The Eleventh Hour that fits in beautifully. And where else would Eleven go for the answer to this question but to Sarah Jane? It's a great short piece and the characterisation of both is spot on – it's a delight to read.

Hi, everyone! I'm [livejournal.com profile] averita, and I'll be reccing this week. As a die-hard Sarah Jane fan, most of the fic I have for you guys will involve her in some capacity, but there should be a good variety of Classic Who, New Who, Big Finish, and SJA characters and themes! To start, one of my favorites:

Story: Miles from Aberdeen
Author: dbskyler
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 19,414
Author's Summary: Getting left in Aberdeen requires Sarah to make more than one type of journey.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, Ten, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Harry Sullivan, the Brig
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'm pretty sure that this is the first Who fic I read; if not, it was certainly the first one that made a major impression on me. This gorgeous piece, set during and immediately after School Reunion (with a couple of perfectly-situated flashbacks), fits into canon but fills in a lot of the scenes we didn't see onscreen, such as Sarah Jane finding out about the Time War. The focus is on Sarah, her emotional journey, and her relationship with the Doctor, but all of the interactions are pitch-perfect - there are a couple of great scenes with Rose towards the end that I would have killed to see in canon! As satisfying as School Reunion is, this fic expands on some of the undercurrents that were only touched on in the episode, and does so beautifully.

Story: Rainy Days and Sundays
Author: dbskyler
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: about 1000
Author's Summary: Some days, the Doctor doesn't answer his phone
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Martha Jones
Warnings: Offstage character death

Recced because: A bunch of Sarah Jane tribute fics were written when Liz Sladen died earlier this year. This one is my favorite. The fic itself is quiet and low-key, but it's very affecting for all that. Maybe even because it's so quiet and simple. (Also, DBSkyler writes a very good Rory.)

And sadly, here is the end of the week already. It's been fun, as ever - I hope people have enjoyed the fics.

On how the events of S5 might have affected others who knew the Doctor:
Story: Once Upon A Time
Author: dbskyler
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 959
Author's Summary: Sarah Jane's time with the Doctor is unraveling.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: Spoilers for the finale of S5 (Fnarg/Whatever).

Recced because: It’s a beautfully written fic with a deliberate ‘storytelling’ feel in which we see how the removal of the Doctor from time and the loss of his memory might have affected others – in this case Sarah Jane Smith, who knows the Doctor better than most. It’s an excellent, moving piece of work – and also serves as a lovely tribute to the character and to Elisabeth Sladen, and is the perfect place to finish this week. (As the Master once said, a cosmos without the Doctor scarcely bears thinking about – especially for one of his very best friends.)

Story: The Spotter's Guide to the Doctor
Author:dbskyler
Rating:All Ages
Word Count:1259
Author's Summary:Because someone had to write it.
Characters/Pairings:The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (7th), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th)
Warnings:None, aside from minding you don't drink while reading, as this will place your keyboard in mortal peril

Recced because: It's Thursday and I need to rec something less than angsty before we head into the weekend? No, truly, this is an exceptional little story, filled with humour and whovian in-jokes. In fact, if you aren't laughing by the end, I dare say, you don't have a sense of humour. Enjoy.

Story: On The Benefits of Having An Attic
Author: dbskyler
Word count: 897
Rating: All ages
Author's Summary: The Doctor sent K-9 to Sarah as a gift. Now what's she supposed to do with all the other stuff?
Characters/ pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, K-9

Recced because: You know those awkward bits when your exes give you back all the stuff you left in their house over the years? When the ex is the Doctor and the house is the Tardis.... well, it can get a bit uncomfortable, too. And messy. And hilarious, especially if the fic is in diary form and you just can't wait to see what's the next thing Sarah Jane has to deal with!
clocketpatch: A small, innocent-looking red alarm clock, stuck forever at 10 to 7. (Default)
[personal profile] clocketpatch
Hi I’m Clocket and I’ll be your assigned reccer for the next seven days. Hopefully I’ll be able to give you a nice selection of lengths and eras with a good crack-to-angst ratio. Since I’m swamped with school this week I wrote most of these up a good month in advance so here’s hoping no one steals the recs.

Story: To the Rescue
Author: dbskyler
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1381
Author's Summary: Sarah Jane is in Aberdeen! Help is on the way.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah-Jane, Jack Harkness, K-9, Jo Grant, Romana II, Harry Sullivan
Warnings: probably best not to be drinking anything that might wreck your laptop when reading this

Recced because:
Mondays need a bit of humour, therefore I bring you this wonderful and highly plausible fic about what Sarah-Jane did after getting dumped in Aberdeen. Did she weep and angst in a corner, a helpless little maiden in distress?
– of course not! She’s Sarah-Jane!
The Doctor, however, is set on the notion that she must be rescued, and sends various companions to do the deed; the results are predictably hilarious as Sarah-Jane rolls her eyes at each in turn and gets on with her sight-seeing (this involves wild misappropriations of UNIT funding).

Story: Fallacy Somewhere (Or: If You Can't Steal a Coat from Gilbert and Sullivan, Then From Which 19th Century Librettists and Composers Can You Steal a Coat?)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dbskyler
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3,871
Author's Summary: You know, I acquired that ulster from Gilbert and Sullivan. –The First Doctor, "Edge of Destruction."
Characters/Pairings: One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen, Susan, Jamie, Jo, Romana II, Nyssa, Tegan, Ace, Grace, Rose, Jack, Donna
Warnings: None

Recced because: If you are a Gilbert and Sullivan fan, this will make you laugh and laugh. Even if you aren't a G&S fan (and why not, for heaven's sake?), this is still a witty and very funny story about multiple Doctors causing coat-related chaos for the composer and librettist. The story is crammed full of references both obvious and sly to Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, and [livejournal.com profile] dbskyler helpfully includes an extra chapter of author's notes in case you miss a few of the jokes.
