Rec: The Worst Plan

Story: The Worst Plan
Author: Vigs
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1,315
Author's Summary: Takes place immediately after Family of Blood. Martha explains to the Doctor just how bad his plan was.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Smith, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I think what I really enjoyed about this story was that Martha confronted the Doctor about her feelings and what she went through in "Human Nature/Family of Blood." I really admire the author's portrayal of Martha, touching upon her courage and her tenacity. I could totally see Martha doing this. She'd been mistreated too much before, sometimes by the Doctor himself, and I felt some relief on her part that she was able to express herself here. Great depth and introspection too. A little character-driven gem that should get more attention.

Rec: Soldiers Without Guns, by Paladin

Story: Soldiers Without Guns
Author: Paladin
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 7999
Author's Summary: Alternate ending to the Poison Sky. The Doctor tries to save the world from the Sontaran threat but finds that even Time Lords shouldn't neglect the paperwork.
Characters/Pairings: The Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble, Martha Jones, UNIT
Warnings: None

Recced because: There's a bureaucrat at UNIT who wants the paperwork on the device the Doctor used to eradicate the Sontarans' poison gas in The Poison Sky. Did the Doctor file a Hazardous Emissions Management Plan? Not only is this fic extremely funny (and strangely plausible), but the twist at the end is brilliant.

Rec: Gothic Romance by vvj5

Story: Gothic Romance
Author: vvj5
Rating: teen
Word Count: 7513
Author's Summary: It is a fact universally acknowledged that any beings splintered in time will inevitably run into each other. No law says it has to end well, though…
Characters/Pairings: Clara Oswin Oswald, Scaroth
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is an entertaining and atmospheric short story that's part gothic novel parody, part heist fic, part timey-wimey sci-fi story, and combines characters from many different eras of Doctor Who in a very clever way. It's probably best read after you've seen 'City of Death' and know who Scaroth is, but the central concept of characters who are displaced in time and thrown together in unusual circumstances is probably easy for any Whovian to catch on to. You wouldn't think 'fake relationship' trope fic featuring a time-stream Clara & a classic Who monster could be so amusing, but you'd be wrong. With it's crisp dialogue, well-realized setting, and unexpected pathos toward the end, I could easily picture this making a very fine Big Finish audio. I thoroughly enjoyed this one the whole way through, and hope lots of others will too.

Rec: Fondness by LizBee

Story: Fondness
Author: LizBee
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 738
Characters/pairings: Fourth Doctor/Romana I
Author's summary: "I am rather fond of you," the Doctor said, in an unexpected fit of post-coital affection.
Warnings: none

Recced because: I don't even ship Four/Romana, but this fic was so funny I was willing to go with it. The Doctor and Romana's pillow talk in this is hilariously droll and full of witty jabs at both Time Lord society and their own relationship, and perfectly in character. I could hear both their voices clearly in this dialogue, which is no small feat considering how the banter between Four and Romana I was some of the best of any Doctor & companion team, IMO. It was lovely to hear the flavor of that recreated here. A delightful (if mildly NSFW) read.

Rec: See Ye Not That Bonny Road by Lyricwritesprose

Hello all! I'm [livejournal.com profile] newmoonstar, (aka Meadowlark on Teaspoon), and I'm glad to be back reccing for the next two weeks! I'm going to start with a fic I recently found which has immediately become one of my faves:

Story: See Ye Not That Bonny Road
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 12,195
Characters: Jamie McCrimmon, Eighth Doctor
Author's summary: Jamie McCrimmon is wounded, exhausted, and feels like a stranger in his own head.
Warnings: explicit violence (also spoilers for 'The War Games')

Recced because: Do you ever come across a fic that you read for the first time and immediately say to yourself 'omg, this is perfect'? This is one of those fics. I can't believe it hasn't been recced before, but I'm all too happy to do the honors!

Fresh off my first read of it, I'm still in flail mode, but I'll try to highlight it's strengths with a modicum of clarity:

First of all: Post-War Games Jamie. What happens to companions after they leave is a great subject for fic, and Jamie is a particularly interesting case, seeing as his memory is supposedly erased- but how can all the memories be truly gone after all the ways he's learned and changed? How can he forget the best friend he's ever had? In this story, he hasn't quite forgotten, and the memories come to him in snatches of ideas- and he makes sense of them in the context of his own time and culture. The references to Scottish faerie lore are perfectly fitting, and the attention the author has paid to all the little details made me, as someone who once considered getting a degree in folklore, absolutely delighted.

Second: The Eighth Doctor. The scenes between Eight and Jamie are spot on. Sensitively written, thoughtful, and a little bit heartbreaking, but in a good way. This fic does a beautiful job of highlighting the strength of the Doctor & companion bond regardless of which face he wears.

Third: Kirstie McLaren gets a featured role, in a way that makes her more than just an ancillary love interest to Jamie's story. (And hints at interesting possibilities for the future.)

Basically, this is a beautifully written, touching story, with a great mix of action/adventure and insightful character-based scenes. I could hear all the characters voices perfectly while reading it, and I'm accepting the whole thing as my new headcanon now. If you love Jamie and wish his fate had been different, reading this might be a tonic for some of those War Games blues. (Though I would advise having some tissues handy while reading it- the feels will sneak up on you!) Go forth and read: this fic is the kind of fic that ficcing is all about.

rec: An Evil Memory Lingering by whispersecho

Story: An Evil Memory Lingering
Author: whispersecho
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1372
Author's Summary: Perivale, 1983: a thirteen-year-old girl runs from an all-too-real nightmare seeking the solace of an old house no one ever visits. What she finds is a house of dead things that aren't quite dead.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane
Warnings: Some spoilers for Ghost Light.

Recced because: In Ghost Light Ace returns to the scene of her worst memory: this is that worst memory played out in full and it's excellent and thoroughly unnerving – shivery-good.

Rec: Waiting for Death

First of all, apologies are in order. I was planning to be able to rec MORE the last couple of weeks, but Life has not worked out as anticipated. :D That being said, I do still have a few more days as your official reccer here, so despite time and tide, I will do my best to make sure I get a few more goodies out to you all before it is all over! Starting with this one:

Story: Waiting for Death
Author: badly_knitted
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 442
Author's Summary: In the aftermath of the bombs going off, Jack lays in the wreckage, trapped and waiting to die.
Characters/Pairings: Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness
Warnings: Angst, Drama, Introspection, Missing Scene, Standalone

Recced because: I loved Torchwood. And though this is a 'short but sweet' fiction, it captures the events, emotions and thoughts of the characters very, very well - putting you in the moment of this scene. This author's fictions (mostly in drabble-form) are well worth the time to read! I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I have enjoyed reccing it! But in case you need a touch more convincing, here is a taste of what you will be delving into:

Author: Nancy Brown
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4244
Author's Summary: Four hellos and one goodbye.
Characters/Pairings: River Song, Jack Harkness, the Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: River and Jack are both travellers through time whose lives have been permanently altered through their association with the Doctor. But what if their lives had also been permanently altered through their association with each other? Expertly woven through time and space, this fic shows us their first meetings, the power of friendship, and the importance of being in the right place at the right time.

Author's Summary: “Now do you see? Bernice Summerfield must die. Can’t you see that she needs to die?”

Warnings:  None

Rec: And Then There Was One by SpaceTimeConundrum

Rating: Teen
Word Count: 37019
Author's Summary: The end and aftermath of the Last Great Time War in the Pete's World Universe. Gallifrey falls, the Doctor is lost, and a killer is lurking among the residents of a town on the edge of the Canadian wilderness. Alt!Five's story.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (5th)/Romana (author-created), The Doctor (5th)/Original Character,  The Master(author-created)
Warnings: Some disturbing scenes, and spoilers for the Time War (up to and including Day of the Doctor).

Recced because: This fic is part of a series that explores the idea of "What if the Fifth Doctor had been the one involved in the Time War?"  and introduces a Doctor like we've never seen before.  A very compelling story; with well-developed original characters and excellent world-building.

Rec: Low Town, by JJPOR

Story: Low Town
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 25,810
Author's Summary: A murder on Gallifrey is bad enough; the murder of a prominent Time Lord in the heart(s) of Prydon Academy is even worse. Fortunately, Castellan Spandrell is on the case.
Characters/Pairings: Andred, Borusa, Other Character(s), Romana I, The Time Lords
Warnings: Explicit Violence

Recced because: This was just written a few days ago, but I felt it needed a rec ASAP. If this were a physical book, I would not have been able to put it down. I waited with bated breath for each update on Teaspoon, and it was worth the patience!

This story is deeply suspenseful, with unpredictable twists and turns. Excellent characterizations and descriptions, with a plot that pulls you in so quickly that you won't know what hit you.

Author's Summary: Rose misinterprets the Doctor's actions right after being trapped together in their new universe.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler/Metacrisis Tenth Doctor; Jackie Tyler
Warnings: None given by the author. I'm gonna personally warn for potential steaminess.

Recced because: For the most part, I don't read very much that tends toward out-and-out-Sexy. But this one...I'm amazed it didn't steam up my computer screen! It is, in a word, yummy. It's just irresistible. :D

rec: welcome to the house! by masterpwn

Sorry it's been so long between recs, I've been recovering from a nasty case of the flu.

Story: Welcome to the House!
Author: Masterpwn
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 31896
Author's Summary: Multiple people who have never met each other are selected by a secret organization for unknown reasons and forced to survive in the most terrible place they have ever been in full of traps and monsters. It will take their best to stay alive and find out the truth, but the house will try everything to kill them. Is escape even possible? Will anyone even survive this? 10 go in, 1 comes out... Or so they say.
Characters/Pairing: Amy Pond, Clara Oswald, Donna Noble, Rose Tyler, River Song, Martha Jones, Rory Williams, the 9th Doctor, the 10th Doctor, the 11th Doctor
Warnings: Explicit violence, swearing, several major character deaths

As I've said before, I love a good AU, and this story fits the bill. Perhaps my favorite thing about it though is that we get a whole mess of characters who never got a chance to interact in canon working together towards a common goal. This story is full of surprises, twists, and turns-I never knew what to expect next, which is part of why I loved it so much. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

rec: the sacrament of penance by lyricalprose

Story: the sacrament of penance
Author: lyricalprose
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1442
Author's Summary: (Broadchurch crossover). Hardy is not officially a missing person. Yet.
Characters/Pairing: Alec Hardy (Ten) & Ellie Miller
Warnings: Swearing

It's a pity there's only a handful of DW/BC crossovers on the Teaspoon, and this is just one of several that combines the best of both worlds-Hardy is really a chameleon arched Ten. For such a short fic, it's very evocative, giving us snapshots of both Ellie and Ten/Hardy's thoughts and dreams (of Rose and of beaches). It does end on a bit of a cliffhanger-I'm hoping eventually the author will write more. If you like Broadchurch, this is a must read.

Title: Look

Author's Summary: Lucy Saxon watches the world, and walks around with vacant eyes. A series of drabbles about the Master and his wife.
Characters/Pairings: Simms!Master/Lucy Saxon, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: Explicit violence

Recc'ed Because: Written as a series of 100 word drabbles, this fic highlights Lucy Saxons dependency of the Master and her complicated feelings for him. It’s uncomfortable and brilliant to read.

Rec: Any Colour You Like

Title: Any Colour You Like
Author: Calapine
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2744
Author's Summary: The Master's curious about his future wife.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Delgado), Lucy Saxon
Warnings: references to self-harm and suicide ideation.

Recc'ed Because: This story is a paradox, but it works nevertheless. The Master invites Lucy Saxon into his TARDIS and she accepts. The Master is curious and a bit uncomfortable, unfailingly polite and perhaps he do things to Lucy’s mind she doesn’t remember after. He may do it to be kind. And Lucy is damaged, which anyone who has survived the Master probably has to be, but she is also not afraid anymore. The chemistry between them too are very interesting and it is a story which can be read several times. It also beautifully and poetically written.
