Hello, hello all! I am PhoenixDragon (aka Mandy) - and I shall be your reccer these next couple of weeks. *Smiles* I'm very excited - and I am looking forward to sharing a lot of goodies with you before my time here is over. So without further ado, I'd like to get to my first rec of May!

Story: Burn Now (Or Die A Traitor's Death)
Author: Inkfire
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2092
Author's Summary: Before his death, the Doctor makes the hardest sacrifice. AU!verse, the Doctor destroys the TARDIS.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (11th), The TARDIS
Warnings: Alternate Universe, Angst, Character Study, Drama, Horror, Introspection, Standalone

Recced because: Well, first of all, this author is amazing. The images and feelings she paints with words can leave a lingering, lasting impression - and even if they can be a lot to take in and grapple with - they always leave you wanting more.

This tale is certainly no different.

It is an alternate universe, where the Doctor feels he has no choice but to remove his TARDIS from the hands of those who would harm Her or use Her for evil ends, by doing something equally as terrible. Nearing his own end and terrified and angry, he makes a choice that will haunt him for the few hours he has left. It is utterly, wholly believable. Suffocatingly dark. And endlessly sorrowful. A masterpiece in writing, in alternate timelines and it touches on the darkness the Doctor carries within that generally does not manifest on such levels...though he is perfectly capable of such. A marvelous read. One that you will carry with you. And even as it leaves you sad and haunted, you will find yourself searching her works for more brilliant words and tales! But I do not expect you to read just based on my recommendation (though you should), so a taste is in order, yes?

Title: Look
Author: Inkfire
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1200
Author's Summary: Lucy Saxon watches the world, and walks around with vacant eyes. A series of drabbles about the Master and his wife.
Characters/Pairings: Simms!Master/Lucy Saxon, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: Explicit violence

Recc'ed Because: Written as a series of 100 word drabbles, this fic highlights Lucy Saxons dependency of the Master and her complicated feelings for him. It’s uncomfortable and brilliant to read.

Story: Vacuum
Author: Inkfire
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1,082
Author's Summary: Something is missing in Zoe’s mind.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe

Recced because: I love Zoe, but the ending she got onscreen is terribly upsetting. Here, Inkfire takes the first steps towards rectifying that: even if Zoe has lost all her memories of traveling with the Doctor – and all her character growth to boot – she knows something has been lost, and wants to try to recover it. "Vacuum" is a brief and meditative character study with a genuine feel for how unsettled Zoe must have felt after "The War Games," and if you're a Zoe fan, I think you'll appreciate that this story ends on such a hopeful note.

Story: Backwards the Clock Goes Ticking
Author: Inkfire
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 511 words
Author's Summary: Sunlight burns and water gleams, and River Song stands suspended. Lake Silencio, twice.
Characters/Pairings: River Song, the Eleventh Doctor
Warnings:None

Recced because: I have a penchant for short, emotionally powerful fics and this one fits the bill beautifully. River Song is one of my favourite characters and I’m fascinated by her fragmented and tragic life. And when I read this story I could feel the intensity of the heat and River’s sense of helplessness.

Characters/pairings: Susan Foreman/David Campbell
Author's summary: In which Susan builds a life made of little things and moments- learning to stand still. Classic!Who character insight piece, set after The Dalek Invasion of Earth. Susan/David

Recced because: I'm one of the rather small group of people who really loves Susan, and this little fic managed to encapsulate what I pictured her life being like after she leaves. I sincerely believe Susan would be able to make a happy life for herself without the Doctor, on Earth with David, and this piece has a hopeful slant, in a quiet, measured, yet lyrical way. It rings true for the Susan we know from the show, and that's good enough for me. An introspective, insightful, lovely piece, well worth the read.

Story: Still Waters
Author: Inkfire
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 833
Author's Summary: In which River exists, a spirit in a web, dressed in white and timeless.
Characters/Pairings: River Song, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: Angst, Drama, Introspection, Romance

Recced because: Well. River for one. River could be the sole reason for this rec alone. But it isn't just River. It is River lost within the Machine. It is how she is painted, so vivid, so alive and so very, very River within this fiction. 'Inkfire' consistently blows me away with the quality of her work. So very much so, it is difficult to chose just which fiction of hers to recommend. I'm afraid my reviews to her work are never very stellar, as she generally leaves me too flabbergasted and stunned and in awe to come up with actual words to describe the feelings she invokes within me.

This is another one of those fictions. It left me stunned. If left me sad and elated and sighing with the overall perfection within each and every word, sentence, paragraph. She puts you there with River. She shows us River's strength, her calm, her longing for all that she knew, even as she does what she does best - takes what is handed to her and makes do. She deals with the cards she has drawn as best as she knows how. And with River, her best is nothing but her all.

This fiction is River Song. Down to a tee. I am in awe and I could not let this week go by without reccing this story by this (oh-so) phenomenal author. But in case this rec is not enough to convince, I have a taste of this beauty below the cut...

Just a small sample... )

Ahhhh, so, so lovely. See what I mean? A must-read! Do tell her how awesome this is after you get done reading, yes? Let her know how this fiction touched your heart and made you FEEL...

Hello, [livejournal.com profile] calufrax! I'm a bit late in getting today's rec up -- stupid work getting in the way of what's really important -- but I hope you enjoy it. And if you'd like to rec something yourself (we really do need more reccers!), please drop by the sign-up post.

Story: Home Is Where the Journey Begins
Author: Inkfire
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 662
Author's Summary: Home becomes an adventure of its own, their destination most unhoped for. Home is the place where they pause and look into each other’s eyes, knowing what they have lived, and what still lies ahead. Home is the most thrilling thing of all. A little Ian/Barbara character exploration, set post their departure in "The Chase."
Characters/Pairings: Barbara/Ian, River
Warnings: None

Recced because: One of the benefits of moderating the Teaspoon queue is getting to see great fic before anyone else on the site does, and I was especially pleased this one came my way; it's a story with rare sensitivity to language, and equal sensitivity to the relationship between the characters. Ian and Barbara's time on the TARDIS changed them, not just in how they perceive history and the world around them now that they're no longer traveling in time and space, but also in how they perceive each other. Adjustment to normal life is hard, but sharing it with someone you care about, and who knows what you've been through, makes it that much easier, and that much more wonderful.

Title: Little Monsters
Author: Inkfire
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 376
Author's Summary: Mels Zucker always runs, falls often, and rises again each time. This one time though, pain holds her down. She might need fixing. She won't stand for that. Exploring the relationship between the Leadworth kids.
Characters/Pairings: Mels, Amy, Rory (kids)
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: Short and stinging, it's a fantastic glimpse at the girl who would become River Song. Part of her made a point to search out her parents as children in Leadworth, but her history and her destiny came too, even if Amy and Rory couldn't possibly know. There are lots of layers to this story and it shows that history, even with such a small snapshot in so few words.

Story: Afterthought
Author: Inkfire
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1,355
Author's Summary: "In Rory's dreams, there is a little girl that dances right beyond his reach, lost and found." Some Rory insight about his relationship with his daughter. Includes references to Amy and Eleven.
Characters/Pairings: Rory Williams
Warnings: None

Recced because: Saying "this is a fantastic Rory character study" doesn't even begin to do this story justice. "Afterthought" dives into Rory's longing for the daughter he never got to see grow up -- a daughter he knows is just fine and having a wonderful life, but whose youth was robbed from him, as well as from Amy. It makes sense that a man who spent 2,000 years guarding the woman he loved would be haunted by his inability to protect his own child, and Inkfire makes Rory's innermost thoughts feel real and visceral. This is one of those stories where it's nearly impossible to choose my favorite quote; the language is that beautiful, and the emotions that raw.
