Author's Summary: Pete Tyler thought he was agreeing to making his entire life better. Sometimes gifts come with strings attached. When his entire life is turned upside down, fate gives him a second chance at pulling it together.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler (both universes), Pete Tyler (Pete’s world), Mickey Smith, Rose Tyler, the Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None by author (character death mentioned)
Recced because: I’m taking a chance by rec’ing this,  because it’s unfinished. However, there are 22 chapters, which gives you plenty to chew on until the final chapters come — and the author appears to have a schedule, which means this fascinating story should be completed. I certainly hope so, because this tackles one of the fascinating untold stories in the Whoniverse; how did the Pete Tyler of Pete’s World come to be so different from the lovable, but unsuccessful Pete Tyler of our world? [livejournal.com profile] beshter has a knack I love in writers: they build a believable world, they create characters who act believably, and they act only on the information they know. We, as readers, know what’s happening and why, but the writer’s skill is such that we want to watch this Pete (always one of my favorite characters) think his way through his good fortune, through invasion, through losing one Jackie and into loving a new Jackie.

Recced because: My first Doctor was the Ninth Doctor, and so when he regenerated and the Tenth Doctor took over, I sympathized with Rose's hesitance in the The Christmas Invasion. I was not sure I was ready for this interloper. He seemed so different, and I wasn't convinced he would be as good as Nine had been. By the end of the episode, however, I, like Rose, had been won over. This is a story filling in the Doctor's story in The Christmas Invasion, and it's both about the Doctor himself and the kind of man he is and how Rose comes to see that he is still the same man. In a change from The Christmas Invasion, however, this is entirely from the Doctor's perspective rather than from Rose's. The author here captures the Doctor's cadence just right, in what I might describe as poetic rambling.

Story: Closed
Author: A_Who_in_Whoville
Rating: Adult
Word Count:103773
Author's Summary: The breach between universes is permanently closed. After a horrific accident, Rose Tyler decides to re-create herself. Broadchurch is as good a place as any to start afresh. Crossover with Broadchurch.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, Jake Simmonds, 10th Doctor/DI Alex Hardy, Jackie Tyler, Pete Tyler
Warnings: Explicit sex, and a canon character death early on.

Recced because: Since the first series of the show has finished, there have been a lot more Doctor Who/Broadchurch crossover fics popping up. Closed is one of the first, and IMHO, one of the best as well. It's not a reunion fic though, and the 10th Doctor only ever appears in Rose's dreams and memories. Rather, she finds solace in a world where she and the Doctor never reunite in a man who shares his face: DI Alec Hardy. It's a really well done story, and you'll be rooting for Rose and Alec the whole time, so you won't get a chance to be disappointed that there is no actual 10 in it. Plus, we get lots of Jake Simmonds, who is an awesome and underused character. I read this fic as it was being updated, and was on tenterhooks waiting for her to update chapters. You're lucky enough to get it all in one shot! Enjoy. :)

I'm sensing a theme for this rec-period.

Sex.

To quote the lovely movie The Holiday: "Sex makes everything more complicated. Even not having it, because the not having it... makes it complicated." Don't the Doctor Who shippers know this well!

In this fic, however, Rose and the Doctor have sex. It details their first time, in great detail, and it's one of those fics that actually gets sex, how it works and how it's messy and complicated and not all sunshine and roses. And also that it's fun. I think so many fic writers forget that not all sex is earth-shattering, but that it doesn't mean it's not good. And people enjoy it because it's fun, not because it's perfect.

One of my pet peeves is where people who sleep with each other don't talk. Communication people! And Rose and the Doctor communicate here, and show that communication improves sex. I love to see that in fic.

Sorry for the ramble. Just read the fic and give the author some love!

Story: Harmony (a Doctor Who Novella)
Author: thebunnyinthetardis
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 60,264
Author's Summary: The Slow Path had never been as agonizing as now. Years had passed since that fateful day when the Doctor had left him with Rose Tyler on a desolate beach in Norway. Years for both of them--and while life had gone on, he was reasonably sure his had not been the fairy tale the Time Lord might have intended it to be. Now, as fate would have it, their paths were once more to cross, leading them on a journey through Time, a journey in Space, and a journey toward Wholeness. A voice he cannot identify calls. A 17th century cannon ball lands in the garden. A blue box he never thought he would see again lands in the forest. And a Time Lord is running out of Time.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, metacrisis Doctor, Rose Tyler, and the other usual suspects
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because:  A few of thebunnyinthetardis' works have been recced, and for good reason. She's an excellent writer.  The voice she uses for the metacrisis Doctor is unique, and the perspective she brings to his character is moving, enlightening, and rings true in every aspect.  It's a painful journey, but it doesn't stagnate and wallow in angst, and is an excellent adventure romp as well as wickedly insightful character development.

This is another long fic, but most of the fics I read are long ones.  I love authors who take the characters on a journey that progresses them beyond what we know and already love about them, and the longer format really gives authors space to play.  In this particular story, thebunnyinthetardis starts with a mystery and artfully feeds us hints and clues in amongst the adventure, building the background of what has transpired in the metacrisis Doctor's life.  It's beautifully done, and the anticipation made me race through the story the first time, and then I went back to re-read it leisurely.  I have a great appreciation for the care and attention she pays to environment, atmosphere, and characterization, and there is more than enough meat in this story to bear up to several re-readings.

There are many TenToo/Rose stories - it's a dime-a-dozen genre in New Who fics, but it's an understandably rich area of canon to mine.  This one is very special and worth a read, even if you're a bit tapped out on the genre.  My eternal pet peeve is the blithe idealisation of the Doctor's transition to humanity and his relationship with Rose, and I'm much more taken with this gritty, honest take.  It's harsh but hopeful, and the adventure plot makes it a very true-to-Who story.  All around a great read.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to rec for you all this past week! :) It's been a lot of fun, and I hope you've enjoyed reading these stories as much as I have! For my final rec, I give you a Doctor/Rose love story that spans across several eras. :)

Story: Shades of Blue ~ Cerulean
Author: bluedawn
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 46,842
Author's Summary: Trapped in the parallel universe, Rose finally thinks she's found the Doctor, but it isn't exactly the one she expects. She falls in love with him anyway. The first story in the "Past Present and Future" series.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith, Other Character(s), Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (8th)
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: This is the first story in one of my all time favorite series. It is the story that first introduced me to the idea of--and made me fall in love with--the Eighth Doctor/Rose pairing. The growth of their relationship--and the Doctor going through all sorts of assumptions and feelings along the way--is beautifully portrayed. So too is the underlying tension that comes with loving a Time Lord (and being a Time Lord in love) across multiple regenerations. I love the idea of a timeless love--a love that exists on some core level: soul mates. And the romantic in me loves the idea the the Doctor and Rose love each across all time and in all forms.

It's well written, with wonderful characterizations and raw emotions. It's a believable journey; Rose knows him, but he doesn't know her, and though their courtship is whirlwind, it isn't without its difficulties. Sometimes it's funny, and sometimes it's a beautiful kind of sad--the kind of sad that only comes from knowing that there's a ticking time bomb on their relationship. Still, there's a light at the end of the tunnel; the series as a whole is about Rose's journey back to the Tenth Doctor, and her love for all the other versions of him she meets and re-meets along the way. The Eighth Doctor is the beginning, but he isn't the end--and that's what makes it all the more magical.

It's the beautiful beginning of an epic tale, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have!

Recced because: This is probably one of the funniest fics I have ever read. It's complete and utter crack!fic, and had me in stitches from beginning to end. Basically, at the end of "Dalek", Rose decides to adopt the Dalek with her DNA as a pet. From there, there's spectacularly funny times, as the Dalek (named Pedro, as all Daleks should be) is highly protective of Rose and wants to weed out her potential suitors (The Doctor and Jack included!). Even the post-Doomsday epilogue is more funny than sad, thanks to the author's incredible penchant for humor!

Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: This is the story that made me fall in love with the New London High series. It's one of the most innovative, captivating AUs I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The author seamlessly inserts the characters of Doctor Who into the setting of a teen drama, without losing any of the fantastic characterizations that makes them unique in the first place. It cleverly blends elements of canon, yet re-imagines the show as something entirely new, and entirely wonderful.

There's a blossoming 9/Rose love story, a super-shy and awkward Rory, a flirty teenaged Jack, and even a nod to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And, because every high school drama needs its villains, there's Harry Saxon and his evil minions, the Dalecki brothers.

Excerpt )

Before you go off to read it, here's a quick lowdown on the Doctors at New London High. All of the Doctors are related to one another, and all of their names are variants on 'John Smith.'

Evan is Eight, John is Nine, Sean is Ten, and Ian is Eleven. These four, along with the majority of their companions, are high school students. The other Doctors are parents and uncles, and Sarah Jane is Evan and John's mother.

I hope you enjoy this story as much as I did, and, if you do, feel free to let the author know!

Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, K-9, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: Action/Adventure, Alternate Universe, Drama, General, Mystery

Recced because: Ahhh, this is what I consider one of the best kinds of Doctor Who fic. A fairytale (if you will) within a fairytale. It feels like a whole 'nother world, even as it is very much a Doctor Who fiction. This author has such phenomenal characterization, she can place these characters in any situation and keep it all in balance (and she has done so several times) and yet, you never feel as if you are out of place. Her grasp of the intricacies of the characters, the wonderfully vivid settings and the pacing of her plots makes all of her fiction worth a read. But this is one that sits very close to my heart and sits at the top of my favorites. I certainly hope you enjoy it as much as I have. Oh! And don't let the wordcount daunt you. Before you know it, the fiction is over and you are left blinking, wishing it could have gone on forever...

A Complicated Event In Time And Space
Author: Aldanon
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 53,493 Words
Author's Summary: It took almost twenty hours to tow the Earth back home after saving all of reality from the Daleks. Set during Journey's End, this story is a compilation of events that took place in the TARDIS and on the Earth in those hours.
Characters/Pairings: Ten II/Rose, Martha/Mickey, Tenth Doctor,  Donna Noble, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jackie Tyler, Rhys Williams, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings:  A fair potion of Angst and Hurt/Comfort for certain characters and a mild case of Whump.

Recced because: As a fan boy and someone who came into Who in the days before the New Series and the suggestion of certain pairings and the like, I tend to view certain kinds of fan fiction warily. However, whilst I’ve always loved the idea of Martha and Mickey getting together I came to love Aldanon’s protrayal of setting up Rose with the duplicate Ten – here, she’s elected to suggest that rather than mere minutes it took many hours for the Earth to be dragged back to its rightful position, leading to the possibility of talks and interactions which Russell denied us. While Ten II/Rose and Mickey/Martha are the main focuses here all the TARDIS crew get a piece of the action. Better yet, this lengthy fic expands into two sequel works which focus on the lives of these two pairings afterwards. In short this is a big read but well worth it!

Recced because: darkestboy is one of those authors who has done the seemingly impossible and written fan fiction for nigh-on every corner of the Doctor Who Universe, yet he has yet to receive any significant recognition for it, which is a tad unfair. This collection in question via a logical theme is a perfect example of this fact and every short story is great, ranging from the lost Christmas for Rose Tyler, to Winter reunions with Grace Holloway and Liz Shaw to the 1st Doctor dressed as Santa Claus! A fine introduction to this author’s work. The idea of a set of stories for all the Doctors is inspired too and he’s already started a second one for spooky Halloween. Indeed I’m thinking of trying something similar myself! Hope you like this!

Story: The Adventures of Ten, Rose and Jack (a series of - so far - three multi-chapter stories)
Author: Sanguine Ink
Rating: Up to Teen
Word Count: Story 1: 30291 words in 13 chapters; Story 2: 38913 words in 15 chapters; Story 3: 24705 words in 9 chapters
Author's Summary: For the series: Starts with an AU of Army of Ghosts/Doomsday and follows the Tenth Doctor, Rose, and Jack as they travel through time and space.
Individual story summaries:
Two Months "Woke up one morning and there they all were," said Jackie. "Ghosts, everywhere! We all ran around screamin' and that. Whole planet was panicking. No sign of you." But what if there was? A story in which the Doctor and Rose show up at Jackie's flat two months earlier, completely changing the events of Army of Ghosts and Doomsday.
The Planted Past Ten, Rose, and Jack intend to visit a nice festival. Instead, they end up with mortal danger, time-y wime-y enemies, and a whole lot of running.
Loop "He was the champion – no, the lord – of foolhardy plans, whipped together at the last second with barely a prayer of working. But this…this took the cake. It was all up to Jack now."
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness, a whole host of guest characters including Jackie Tyler, Yvonne Hartmann, Ianto Jones, General Staal, a sentient plant and Captain Jack Harkness (no, that's not a mistake!).

Recced because: Sanguine Ink writes rollicking good adventures. From the first story, in which she creates an AU of her own stemming from an alternate ending to Doomsday, she takes her characters on a rollercoaster ride with lots of action and danger, solidly-constructed plot and plenty of humour, some of it laugh-out-loud. Her Jack has me nodding throughout, and she just gets the Doctor: the combination of extreme intelligence and manic hyperactivity, his ability to distract and feint, and even turning completely bizarre actions into the perfect plan. Rose is quick-thinking and determined, and Jackie is brilliant also in the first story. Even minor characters are drawn deftly and vividly in character; nobody is wasted in this story.

The series is Ten/Rose, but the focus isn't on the romance at all; it's there clearly enough for those who want it, but it never gets in the way of the story. A few Americanisms and occasional typos appear, but in stories as enjoyable as these they didn’t bother me at all.

A very short extract, showcasing the humour with no spoilers, is:below the cut )

If you like plotty stories full of adventure, a great cast of well-written characters, lots of twists and turns, and humour around every corner, give this series a try. And if you enjoy it, please tell the author!

Recced because: (How many post-Journey's End Pete's World fics d'ya think there are? Hundreds? A thousand? Anyway I digress ...) This ranks among my favorite post-JE fics. It's sweet, emotional and while TenToo of course is certainly more openly vulnerable, he retains a hint of Time Lord stoicism in this fic. That's something a lot of writers don't do, often TenToo is written like a normal guy or some slightly geeky guy or an angstmuffin ... this fic remembers that underneath it all lurks a 900+ year old Time Lord. It's that extra infusion of circumspect characterization for him that separates this fic from many other post-JE fics.

Story: And Then The TARDIS Fell Into Pete’s World
Author: elisi
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 14042
Author's Summary: The TARDIS falls into Pete’s World. Stuff happens.
Characters/Pairings: Amy/Rory, 10.5/Rose, Eleven, River, the Tyler family
Warnings: none

Recced because:
As full of bubbly goodness as any fine crack!fic, this story also doubles as an excellent character study and exercise in closure. The plot, as described in the title, is basically an excuse to throw together characters unlikely to ever meet in canon, stir them up and see what happens. The result is hilariously satisfying.

And that is my final rec of the week – I’ve had a great time finding a variety of stories and hopefully was able to provide something for everyone to enjoy.

Story: Fade Away
Author: Pitry
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3411
Author's Summary: It was supposed to be different this time. He's human, he can't regenerate - he was supposed to die before her.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Pete Tyler, The Doctor (Duplicate 10th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I wanted to rec something from the classic series, and very nearly did, when i stumbled across this piece. It's lovely and haunting and the style Pitry (the author) uses allows the story to have an emotional impact outside of the sequence of events inside the story, which stops it from, sinking to morose or melodramatic levels of emotion. It's a beautiful story that I didn't want to risk it not being shared until my next turn reccing.

In the end, I guess I did lie to you guys, as these recs were mostly newer series with classic touches thrown in; for that I apologise. However, I do hope you enjoyed my recs even half as much as I enjoyed reccing them and I PROMISE next time will have more classic tales. Until we meet again!

Story: Noble Pursuits
Author: Quean of Swords
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 52k
Author's Summary: In an alternate universe, alternate Donna Noble is a PA at H.C. Clements. Then, one day, her boss tries to feed her to his alien insect offspring. Lucky for her, she is rescued by Rose Tyler of the Insanely Rich Tylers and a mysterious man who calls himself 'the Doctor'... two people who seem to be a bit more familiar with her than they should be. The Doctor, Rose, and the team at Torchwood Alpha (a.k.a. The Warehouse) have to stop an insidious alien invasion before they've even had a chance to settle into their new lives. Will Donna have to chose between helping them or protecting her ailing grandfather?

Warnings: None.

Recced because: This was one of this year's [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang fics, and it. is. marvelous. Among the many things to look forward to: excellent writing, the human Doctor's slow adjustment to his new circumstances, and Donna being, well, Donna. Plus a most entertaining "aliens invading!" plot.

Story: Thirteen Conversations About One Thing
Author: Amy Wolf
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6792
Author's Summary: "I'm half-human, on my mother's side."
Characters/Pairings: Doctors 1-13, Susan, Victoria, Sarah Jane, Romana II, Tegan, Peri, Ace, Grace, Jackie, Martha, Original Companions
Warnings: None

Recced because: "I'm half-human, on my mother's side." That one little line from the TVM is arguably the most hated piece of dialogue in the history of the show. But what if it were true? This fic explores what that might mean for the Doctor and his relationships with humans, using the device of showing thirteen different conversations where thirteen Doctors touch upon -- or just manage to avoid touching upon -- the subject. It's a skillful exploration, dripping with nicely drawn characterizations, and the ending is wonderful.

Story: Alternatives: New Beginnings
Author: Persiflage
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 17227
Author's Summary: Trying to find his feet in Pete's World, the Human-Doctor learns something unexpected about himself and makes a new friend.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Other Character(s), Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (Duplicate 10th), Alt!Martha/The Doctor (Duplicate 10th),
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: This is the first in a series called the Alternatives.I have read several fics that take place in the alt verse that has Rose quickly accepting the human!doctor and him quickly getting over the fact that he is now human and will never travel in the Tardis through space and time again. Although they are well written and I find them entertaining., I just find it unrealistic. He is now human and has part of the Doctor and Donna in him. Donna had a lot of problems having to do with the death of her father and how she was treated by her mother causing her, at least as I saw it, to have some real issues the most noticeable of which is her self esteem and her own self worth. They are a big part of who she is and I would think that he would have some those issues as well. They are never addressed in most fics. They are in this one. I see it as a big step in him figuring out who he is because no matter how much he is like the doctor and even has his memories he is not the Doctor. He can’t keep being defined by who The Doctor is, he needs to find his own identity and needs to know who he is to be happy. Also he I always saw him as mostly human he still has a Time Lord brain and if he was all human he could not handle it because I thought that was the problem with Donna. If he was completely human wouldn’t the Doctor had to do the same thing to the human!Doctor that he did to Donna. This isn’t addressed directly but he is shown as being not quite human as they thought after and incident at Torchwood. I also love this fic because it has alt!Martha and she is just great in this. She has come into her own without The Doctor and is now able to help his human self. The only real warning is there is a bit of Rose bashing. She is portrayed as being very immature and lack compassion towards the human!Doctor.

A nice, fluffy Rose fic today. It's an AU for Parting of the Ways, where Rose takes the long road in getting the Doctor back. Along the way, she concocts a brilliant - if risky - plan, involving circumventing the Blinovitch Limitation Effect, and rationalising with a suicidal... well, you'll see in the fic :-D. Short, sweet, and fluffy. (Probably needed after Mortek... XD)

Story: Mobius
Author: Canaan
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5472
Author's Summary: To save the universes, they had to save the Doctor. To save the Doctor, they had to save Donna. To save Donna, a certain non-Euclidean geometry was required. Timey-wimey angstfic with some h/c moments.
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Rose, Jack/Ianto, Tosh, Owen, Gwen, Donna, Jackie, others
Warnings: None

Recced because: This fic, which fills in the missing period in Rose's life during Turn Left when she was looking for Donna, is dark and difficult and thorny. It's full of sharp angles that stab and jab until you hurt. It's about might-have-beens and should-have-beens, and it's never easy or smooth, but it's worth every painful moment. Canaan writes wonderful darkfic, and here she serves up the best.

Hey folks,
Many apologies for the late start to my reccing week; my brain has been occupied for the last few days with trying to wheedle a historic Scottish property into exhibiting a cake the size of a tennis table in its Great Hall....This may or may not tell you something about my taste in fic. At any rate, let the reccage commence :-)

Warnings:N/A
Recced because:This is one of the first fics I read when I was discovering Doctor Who, and in a lot of ways, it's still my benchmark as far as good fic is concerned. It's set in Pete's World after the events of 'Doomsday', and is both a terrifically well-written character piece that makes me thoroughly identify with Rose in a way that the show never quite managed to do, and is also a rollicking good tale to boot. The pacing is lively and built around a deadpan sense of humor and all of the characters are given unexpected, truthful, tender, plausible moments which really build on how Season Two left them. The original characters are just that and the dialogue fizzes throughout. And there's dinosaurs. Come on, guys, dinosaurs. Who doesn't love a T-Rex?

Story: My True Love Gave To Me
Author: dettiot
Rating: PG for some kissing
Author's Summary: Christmas is a time for getting your heart's desire. Sometimes, the gift you truly want most can't be wrapped in pretty paper and bows. Post-Fear Her.
Warnings: Spoilers for anywhere after The Stolen Earth
Character/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th)

Well, this is my last review. You can all breathe a sigh of relief now. :D

I figured I would finish off this week with a piece of pure fluff. Albeit, long fluff - but definitely fluff.

In honor of Christmas, which really is just around the corner, I bring you 'And My True Love Gave To Me,' by dettiot.

It takes place during season two, during a random Christmas that 10 and Rose decided to share. It all begins with the Doctor wants to hear rose singing Christmas carols and spirals to this marvelous bit of cavity inducing frivolity.

From Christmas shopping, to opening presents in jim-jams, this story takes us through a remarkably uneventful holiday in the lives of Rose and The Doctor.

Of course there is some UST, but most of what happens is just fluff, as the two of them discover their feelings for each other.

Enjoyable, it won't spark any brain cells, but it will certainly bring a smile to your face.

Story: Into The Woods
Author: slaygirl4303 (Erin)
Rating: All Ages
Author's Summary: After being left on the beach, the Doctor, Rose and Jackie are forced to stay overnight in a small Norwegian village until they can get home, but something strange is happening in the quiet town.
Characters/Pairings: 10.5/Rose
Warnings: Spoilers for Journey's End.

Hello again everyone!
Today's rec is brought to you by fairy-tales; because there is nothing like a good reunion fic without Princesses, Wolf Grannies, Doctors fighting Dragons; and of course... Cybermen?

This is a 10.5/Rose fic that deals with the immediate aftermath of Journey's End, but in a unique way.
That's right, ladies and gentlemen. This resolution story actually has... PLOT!
This is, hands down, my favorite 10.5/Rose story. It presents the problems that Rose and Handy have, (we all know there are a lot of them) but it carries on with the two of them doing what they do best - having adventures.
I find that with a lot of 10.5/Rose stories, it main issue is always over their relationship. Where do they stand now, is he really the Doctor, can Rose really love him, yadda yadda yadda. Don't get me wrong, this is all well and good, but Rose and the Doctor have adventure and travel in their blood. They could no more sacrifice that than they could sacrifice each other.

And The Doctor fights a Dragon. Does it get better than that? I think not.
The adventure here is marvelous! It's just so... canon! There is no other way to describe it. It feels just like one of the specials.

For those of you that want fluff, this story has it. But, for those of you who want the adventure, the Doctor being Doctorish, and Rose being - well, Rose, read this.
You won't be disappointed.

Hello! I'm [livejournal.com profile] stellastars and I'm excited to be reccing here at [livejournal.com profile] calufrax again this week. I'll be sharing some of the stories that have caught my attention, including a mixture of Classic and New Who, Torchwood, and SJA. To get us started this week, here's a bit of humor to brighten your Monday!

Story: Possibilities, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bananas
Author: rosa_acicularis / [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 13,660
Author's Summary: Rose Tyler lives the life fantastic, her feet on the ground and her head in the stars. A Pete's World fic. With bananas.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Jake Simmonds, Mickey Smith, Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler, OC, The Doctor (10th), Rose/Ten, Jake/Mickey
Warnings: None
Note: Though finished recently, this fic was begun before Series 4 aired. It contains spoilers and canon only through The Runaway Bride.

Recced because: This fic is LOL-funny and laughter makes the start of any week better. The premise of the story is hilarious, there's a fun Jake/Mickey subplot, and Rose's younger brother (author-created and named "Reggie") adds humor that only an eight-year old could bring. Plus, with phrases like The mysterious bananary continued the language itself will put smiles on faces. (Just try saying the word "bananary" and see if it doesn't make you grin!) But this story is more than laughs, too. As the tale progresses and the culprit behind the bananary revealed, the reader sees a Rose who has matured as an individual: she's built a life for herself without the Doctor and has a firm sense of her place in Pete's world. This well-developed characterization gives the story substance and (combined with the humor) makes for an incredibly satisfying read. I hope it will brighten your day as much as it did mine!

I've been trying to avoid reccing ongoing WIPs because I know many like to read completed stories. However the authors of this story updated this one today, so I just had to include it in the rec list.

Story: Never Quite Normal
Author: Pairadox Timeline
Rating: Adult/R
Word Count: 57,480; currently at 26 chapters
Author's Summary: He can't abide his face in the mirror or the memory of what he has done. The silence has made him insane and the insanity has made him dangerous. At the end of the Time War, the Doctor takes drastic steps, with the help of friends old and new. Nine AU.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose, Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge Stewart/Doris Stewart, Harry Sullivan, John Benton, Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith
Warnings: Adult language, some violence, issues of alcohol abuse.

Recced because: The authors take a broken and dmanaged post - Time War Nine, and spins a brilliant AU based on making a drastic path with his life. The bonds between himself and Classic Who characters, the Brigadier, Benton, and Harry Sullivan are lovingly evident and his meeting with Rose and the development of their relationship is painfully poignant. Both Classic and New Who fans will find unique gems to enjoy about this story and it's overall tale of pain, loss, and trying to put oneself back together again.

Hello, I'm [livejournal.com profile] juliet316and I'll be your friendly neighborhood reccer - oh wait, wrong fandom *blushes*

Anyways, I'll be bringing you some of what I think are some of the most wonderful stories I've come across in my time on Teaspoon. To help everybody with the Monday blahs, we'll start with some humor.

Story: Last Defence
Author: Gillian Taylor
Rating: All Ages/I would say about PG
Word Count: 3338
Author's Summary: When all hope is lost, who else can they turn to?
Characters/Pairings: Nine, Jackie Tyler, Rose Tyler
Warnings:

Recced because: It starts out with a dramatic situation for the Doctor and Rose, and quickly evolves into a dramedy when Jackie comes onto the scene. It's just a classic situation, with Nine being forced to trust the one person in the universe who can't stand him in order to save him and Rose from the particular pickle their in. Just a bit of drama, humor, and good - old fashioned Jackie Tyler slaps to bring about a story, that the reader could easily see as an episode of S1 of New Who. Last line is a hoot. :-)

Story: Monday's Child
Author: Palmetto
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: There's always that period of adjustment when a person first becomes a parent.
Characters/Pairings: alt!Pete Tyler, Rose, Jackie
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~920 words

Recced because: This is a great little look at a minor character who has more significance than he's generally given: the Pete of Pete's World, who has regained a wife who's not his wife, and especially, an adult daughter who is so much like him, but isn't his at all. As palmetto says, they're a bit of a Frankenstein family, and she does a great job of exploring what Pete's thoughts might be, his adjustment to a situation where he loves his daughter in near terrifying ways, despite not knowing how to show it. Quiet and careful, this is a satisfying fill-in of canon.

Story: I'll Meet You on the Other Side
Author: fourzoas/[livejournal.com profile] fourzoas
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 60,290
Author's Summary: The alt!Doctor meets the alt!Martha Jones and copes with the realities of aging. They have adventures.
Characters/Pairings: 10.5/alt!Martha Jones, alongside alt!Jack Harkness, alt!Ianto Jones, Jackie Tyler, alt!Pete Tyler, alt!Sarah Jane Smith, alt!Tish Jones, and other characters.
Warnings: Sex

Recced because: Handy (10.5/The Duplicate Tenth Doctor) is definitely a character that I personally find very intriguing. With bits of the Doctor mixed with bits of Donna inside his head, he comes out an entirely new person and, it is in his self-reflection, we can learn more about what makes him tick as a character and what it means to be the person he is. Obviously, most post-'Journey's End' fic with him focuses on his relationship with Rose in the alt!verse, but what if things didn't work out between them? Where would his life go afterward? Would he seek out the alt!versions of other companions of the Doctor? Or would he always be alone -- always a stranger in a strange land? Would he work for UNIT or Torchwood or somewhere else entirely? And what would happen if by chance he ran into an alt!Martha Jones and they fell in love?

[livejournal.com profile] fourzoas is most definitely one of my favorite writers in fandom and this story -- her first Doctor Who fanfic, I believe -- is definitely one of my favorite fics. I love how she weaves the tale of a budding friendship and romance between Handy and alt!Martha with a page-turning, cracking action-adventure story of intrigue. At 60,290 words, the story is admittedly a bit epic, but perhaps over the weekend, you might find yourself on your couch, sipping some tea, and wanting to simply curl up with a nice story. I highly recommend this fic for that bit of relaxation.

It's Monday, and we all need a bit of fun, yes? Therefore I bring you this, as my first recommendation for this week. It's not crack (that'll come later in the week), but I hope you'll enjoy. And if you do enjoy, I hope you'll remember to leave a comment to let the author know.

Story: The Idiot's Guide to Foiling Alien Invasions
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 20248
Author’s Summary: Jackie and Mickey save the day by bickering, drinking lots of tea and spending a lot of time in the pub in the middle of the day.
Characters/Pairing: Mickey Smith, Jackie Tyler. With appearances by the Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, John Benton, Donna Noble, and Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because:  In this delightful story, the Doctor (Ninth) and Rose take a backseat, leaving the action to the often tragically underappreciated Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler. Amongst the fun and humor we explore some more serious themes often glossed over, such as the year Mickey spent as a suspected murderer, and how the relationship of Jackie and Mickey healed from that and became friends in their shared experience of those left behind.

All my recs this week will be Martha centric.

Story: Electric Avenue
Author: Bobsyeruncle
Rating: All Ages - Swearing - Character Study, Het
Word Count: 28009
Author's Summary: “You never talk about her…” Rose’s comment about Ten’s and Martha Jones’ travels triggers strong emotions as the Human “Doctor” reflects navigating the complexities of personal and social relationships and Ska beat of Brixton in 1969, and his third incarnation and the companion who left him for a man named Jones.
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Third Doctor, Tenth Doctor, Clive Jones, Harriet Jones, Jackie Tyler, Leo Jones, Martha Jones, Original Companion, Original Companion, Original Companion, Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler
Warnings: None.

Recced because: This is my favorite 1969 fic. I love how Bob addresses the racial realities of 1969 and how she made the Old Who characters really interesting for this New Who fan. FYI, there is a sequel, but it's still a WIP finished now. It's called To Be A Queen In Bondage.
