Author's Summary: A murder on Gallifrey is bad enough; the murder of a prominent Time Lord in the heart(s) of Prydon Academy is even worse. Fortunately, Castellan Spandrell is on the case.
Characters/Pairings: Andred, Borusa, Other Character(s), Romana I, The Time Lords

Recced because: This was just written a few days ago, but I felt it needed a rec ASAP. If this were a physical book, I would not have been able to put it down. I waited with bated breath for each update on Teaspoon, and it was worth the patience!

This story is deeply suspenseful, with unpredictable twists and turns. Excellent characterizations and descriptions, with a plot that pulls you in so quickly that you won't know what hit you.

Story: The Revolution Will Not Be Analysed
Author: JJPOR
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 2257
Characters: Ace, Seven
Summary: From up here, she could watch the city burn.
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's Seven and Ace exactly the way they should be. A simile that compares the doctor to a slam poet, Ace reading Hannah Arendt, and a serious reflection on that oft-ignored point - what happens after the Doctor leaves in his TARDIS. The revolution itself is drawn vividly, with tantalizing hints dropped about the state of affairs before the pair arrived, even though the focus is firmly on Ace and the Doctor. Ace's perspective is lively and fascinating - she's written as the intelligent, observant character she is. The seventh doctor plays devil's advocate and teacher, forcing Ace to question and defend what they do everyday. The answers she comes to - are interesting, especially in light of the poem the fic takes it name from.

Author's Summary: Gerald and Harriet of the Torchwood Institute run an errand one rainy London night, scarcely realising the danger they are walking into. Crossover with Upstairs Downstairs.
Characters/Pairings: Harriet Derbyshire, Gerald Carter
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a galloping good read, that’s why. If you don’t know the crossover fandom (Upstairs Downstairs – the 1970s one, that is) or Gerald and Harriet (who are characters from Edwardian Torchwood), fear not – neither do I and I still loved it. It makes use of a bit of cross-casting (one of the UD characters was played by one Anthony Ainley) and dives into adventure, fun and some romance between our old-fashioned heroes. What’s not to enjoy?

Author's Summary: Crossover with Red Dwarf. Sing along, now: “It’s cold outside/There’s no kind of atmosphere/I’m all alone, more or less…”
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Other Character(s), The Doctor (7th)
Warnings: Crossover, General, Humor

Recced because: Well, we've already established that I love humor. Quirky humor at that. And no one can do quirky like the Boys from the Dwarf. This is just completely silly and utterly delightful. All seen from the POV of the Red Dwarf crew, it immerses you in the fiction before you've half realized you are hooked and it draws you helplessly towards the end, even as Lister, Rimmer and the Cat have you banging your face repeatedly against immovable objects (such as a handy desk). Of course, they do that anyway - so all those familiar with Red Dwarf have learned to have plenty of self-heating sake on hand, a high tolerance for self-inflicted pain and a mild resistance to rib-breakage from laughter.

The author claims to not be on their best form, but I very much beg to differ. This fiction is a good time to anyone with a sense of humor. The basics of the Red Dwarf are laid out for you (if you are unfamiliar with them), as the story goes and even if you are familiar with the characters, they are just funny reminders of the overall situation. Perfectly balanced, silly, hilarious - and the reaction of the Doctor and Ace to the Boys is made even funnier just because...ACE...and SEVEN. If you are ever going to read a cross-over, this is a good one to start with. And if you happen to be fond of the X-Over Genre, this is twice the treat in one fiction.

Just a small sample... )

Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (7th), Ace
Warnings: n/a

Recced because: This is one of those fics where I had to check and recheck to make sure it hadn't been recced before.  It's that good.  Seven and Ace do Christmas, but it's thoughtful and sensitive and manages to steer clear of the more cloying sentimentality that sometimes pervades seasonal stories.  From an aborted outing to a perfect Dickensian Christmas to a trip to the Western Front in December 1914, Seven and Ace consider the nature of the holiday and what it really means.  Seven is as mysterious as ever: glimpses of his underlying darkness come through subtlely but undeniably, and his relationship with Ace is ultimately adorable but still tinged with manipulation.  A wonderful story for two complex characters.

Last of the Week! I hope you have enjoyed these. I've had a lovely time recc-ing as always, finding a variety of eras, styles and lengths. Don't forget to feed the authors if you find something you've enjoyed :D

I shall end with a spooky, amazing adventure story that I'm surprised hasn't been recc-ed before:

Author's Summary: An ancient hall of mirrors, an all-too-recent dance of death; the Doctor unexpectedly encounters an old friend, but their reunion (and Amy and Rory’s honeymoon) will have to wait. There are worse things than cracks, it would seem, in this rebooted universe…
Characters/Pairings: Eleven, Amy, Rory, Other Characters
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Swearing

Recc'ed Because: This is an edge-of-your-seat adventure story with gothic horror, special mystery guests, monsters, mirrors and well, just about everything you'd want to start off your Halloween weekend. [livejournal.com profile] jjpor is a very prolific writer and judging from the recs here on this site, anything you click on of his will be well worth the read. This story is no exception. Tone, pace, dialogue, plot, description... all of it comes together to tell the story of what happens when time travelers spend too much time looking in (through?) mirrors. Creepy, mysterious, terrifying, triumphant, and with a fantastic cast. Yes, anyhow, go read it!

Author's Summary: Some people make history. Some people participate in history. Most of us just watch it from the sidelines. Happy 47th birthday, Who!
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: none

Reced because: I love outsider stories, in which we see familiar characters through the eyes of strangers. JJPOR shows us the events in a certain London junkyard on an evening in 1963 from the POV of three OCs. Their identity is both surprising and obvious, and consistent with canon.

“Just a bird,” Terry said. George relaxed, hand creeping away from the pistol again. “Not bad looking, mind you.” Terry practically leered at the mirror.

“Bloody hell, son,” George spluttered as she came into his own field of vision. The girl was slim, darkly pretty, but… “She’s carrying her school bag!”

“Give her a couple of years,” Terry grinned as the girl walked past the van, oblivious to his gaze.

“You’re disgusting,” George told him. “Youngsters today…you’ve got it on the brain!”

“What?”

“It!”

Characters/Pairings: Adric, Romana II, The Doctor (4th)
Warnings: None

Recced because:

Adric is in this. But really, this is about Romana. This is an introspective fic about her reasons for leaving the Doctor and what she thinks about that. Adric is treated marvelously by JJPOR, who shows him as the sort of young man who doesn't understand why his brilliance doesn't make him loved. She doesn't sugarcoat the character either; Adric's less lovely character traits are on display, but not bashed. And Romana is nothing but class- she's respectful and patient. And ultimately, this is a marvelous moment of, if not bonding, then at least understanding between the two characters

Story: A Ghost Story for Christmas
Author: JJPOR
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 28,991
Author's Summary: It's Christmastime; a time for family, and memories, and ghosts, even if you're the Doctor. Especially if you're the Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Delgado!Master, Jo Grant, Sgt Benton, Mike Yates, Liz Shaw, Brig/Doris, UNIT
Warnings: None

Recced because: Here is a nice long story suitable for weekend reading. (I swear I meant to post it Friday evening, but Life intervened. :P) It's another Christmas story, peripherally; it's also a Brigadier family story, and a full-cast UNIT story, and one of those fabulous Delgado!Master missing episodes that JJ does best of anybody.

Also, it is ALL of the timey-wimey, in the best possible way. I love how every one of the OCs in this story, both timey-wimey-stuff-related and, um, not, is so very thoroughly characterized. I would read remixes of this story from everybody's point of view; if it were on the telly, I would icon it and quote it and write fic of it; to summarize, it is an excellent story and you should read it. If you are a New Whovian, all you need to know is that the Doctor is trapped on earth and cranky about it, and that UNIT are (mostly) not evil but he snarks at them anyway. Also, Liz and Jo are both awesome companions and they both get to kick arse here. WIN.

Characters/Pairings: Other characters (the early 20th century Torchwood team, Jack Harkness)
Warnings: explicit violence, swearing

Recced because: So, this is part of the For King and Country series, parts of which have been recced here before. But I think this is my favorite part, and it stands well enough on its own. It's a novella about the Torchwood of years past, and a very good historical fiction/action-adventure piece. It does have a cast of what are basically OCs (these being Torchwood agents that have been mentioned in canon but not very developed there), but jjpor is really excellent at building well-rounded and interesting characters from the small basis Torchwood has provided. I often forget that my knowledge of Gerald, Charles, and Harriet comes from these fics and not from some audio or novelization.

Story: The Tale of the Strange Little Doctor
Author: JJPOR

Author's Summary: “I wandered lonely as a cloud…” A walk in the country and a chance meeting for the Seventh Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane, Beatrix Potter
Warnings: None

Recced because:
Beatrix Potter seems like an author that the Doctor would want to meet.  The fact that Seven has a chance encounter with her adds extra interest for me, because Seven isn’t the Doctor that I would have imagined with her.  Yet in this story he seems like the perfect choice to provide advice on how to remember those you’ve lost, without letting it stop you from moving on with your life.  I love that he recites one of my favorite poems, and even quotes his Fourth self.  Also, the descriptions of the Lake District in this story are so lovely that it makes you feel like you are there.

Story: Knights Errant
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 6325
Author's Summary: "So, what did happen to Brigadier Winifred Bambera and her other half Ancelyn? What happened to Bessie, for that matter? And how did UNIT become NuNIT? It's all connected, of course..."
Characters/Pairings: Ancelyn/Bambera, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Harriet Jones, Other Characters, Torchwood, UNIT, Bessie [she is too a character ;-)]
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: Well... it's The One Where Bambera And Ancelyn Run Away In Bessie To Fight Dragons. *nods* That really ought to be a good recommendation by itself.

Let me elaborate. Brigadier Winifred Bambera - a tough, snarky black lady with incredibly butch hair - was the head of UNIT in the late 1980s, after Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart retired. In the Seventh Doctor story "Battlefield", she worked with Seven, Ace, and the Brig (ther Brig I should say *g*) to repel an invasion by Morgan leFay from an Arthurian alternate dimension. Also involved was an adorably dorky guy named Ancelyn, from the same alternate dimension, fighting on the Doctor's side; Ancelyn and "Brigadette" Bambera started up a wonderful scrappy romance.

This story is set ten years later, when Proper!UNIT is being broken up to make way for New!UNIT. It has... well. I think I'm actually going to do a snippet.

This is a snippet )

Also it has Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. And Bessie, Three's little yellow car (which last appeared in "Battlefield"). And Excalibur. And... well, c'mon, it's hilarious. And it's by [livejournal.com profile] jjpor. Why would you NOT read it? ;-)

Warnings: None, aside from Spoilers for Waters of Mars

Recced because: I waffled in reccing this piece. I know the author and I recced the author last time I recced and while that may look like favouritism; it doesn't stop the author or this piece, in particular, from being just that good. Rather than commit reverse nepotism I have decided to rec this. With Justice and Honour is an an academy days tale, and I know many are put off by those, but this piece was written post-Waters of Mars and in that light this early days tale takes a strange sort of ambiguity that haunts the reader. Also, as this story happened so long before any we have seen in canon (using only what the series entitled Doctor Who shows as canon to avoid arguments without end)it also lends that sort of haunting ambiguity to some other, classic era events (The Key to Time in particular). As usual, JJPOR (the author) spins a tightly woven tale that manages to hurt without being angsty and manages to heal while straying closer to the Valeyard side of the Doctor.

Recced because: Any author who manages to take a somewhat cracky premise, carry it through and create a fic that is both funny and enjoyable has written a good fic. Any author who manages to do all that, and somehow keep everyone completely in character throughout, has written a great fic. And that's what this is: a great fic that is both very funny and weirdly plausible. Story:  The Ten Doctors

Author’s Summary: It was history’s greatest and most famous party.
Characters/Pairings: The first ten Doctors and Romana plus a wide assortment of companions, a couple of classic Masters and the Brigadier, toss well.
Warnings: None
Recced because: I nearly passed it over this time merely because JJPOR is a very popular author who had another well-deserved recommendation just last week (don’t miss that one either!), but decided we’d just let this be his month for a bounty of riches, goodness knows he’s given all of us enough reading enjoyment to deserve it.

This piece was written as a tribute for the 45th anniversary of the show and it quite appropriately is the sort of multi-Doctor fic that brings the reader back again and again for another round.  I expect nearly every writer has to give the “what would happen if all of the Doctors were together at once” scenario a try, but some are definitely better than others; this is one of the good ones and you won’t regret it for a moment.

In essence, Ten has decided that a doomed planet famous for having partied hard right up until the moment their sun went supernova would be the perfect setting for a gathering of his selves and as the guests arrive each and every one is so perfectly portrayed it is a complete delight.  Poor Susan making the best of a doting crowd of Grandfathers, Romana’s opinions regarding the appetizers and Six’s opinions regarding her plus the consequences of expressing those thoughts aloud are only a sprinkle of the stellar moments here, a fabulous panorama lightly sauced with punch.  As no doubt suspected, there are humorous moments but also a few snatches of adventurousness and even some serious and empathetic twists for the heart.

For the uninitiated to his works, JJPOR is a find indeed; a top-notch competent, imaginative and high quality writer whose stories never disappoint.  I highly recommend without reservation not only this particular bit of mildly cracky fancy, but any of his stories across the spectrum.  Enjoy the ride.

Author's summary: “So, what you’re saying, Jeeves,” says I, “is that Daleks don’t believe in letting bygones be bygones.” “Indeed not, sir; the concept of forgiveness is as alien to them as are those of mercy, tolerance and light comic opera.” Jeeves & Wooster sort-of crossover.
Characters/Pairings: Author Created Doctor, Jeeves, Daleks
Warnings: Crossover/fusion with Jeeves & Wooster, kinda sorta.

Recced because: You do not want to know how many false starts I've had in the attempt to tell you why you should read this. Because all I can think of to say about it is that it is fucking awesome. Which it is. But just saying something is awesome isn't always the way to get someone to read a fic. I mean, everyone has different standards of awesome. There are probably people out there who hate Wodehouse. They wouldn't think this fic was awesome. (They would be wrong, but still.)

However, I am a person who likes Wodehouse. And as a person who likes Wodehouse, I really, really love this fic. It reads like JJPOR used mad science to re-animate P G Wodehouse and force him to write Doctor Who fanfiction. In short, it's fucking awesome.

"Well, it's a rum do, Jeeves, and no mistake,” I told him, feeling a little put out at this turn of events; Romana’s parties were always a jolly sort of wheeze, and Brax and Monsieur Le Maitre and some of the other survivors from the old alma mater were going to be there. No doubt, there’d be some thigh-slapping misunderstanding involving someone getting engaged to some horrifying harpy, and Jeeves would have to sort it all out for us. Instead, here was me, stuck to a planet that was about to explode, in the absolute armpit of the galaxy. I was starting to lose my innate good humour, I can tell you. “In fact,” I informed Jeeves, “never in all my puff have I heard of such frightful blackguardry. What have I ever done to these Dalek swine for them to arrange something like this?”

In short, this one's complete joy from start to finish.

Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Polly, Ben Jackson
Warnings: Some violence.

Recced because: I love this so much if someone had recced it before me I might have had to kill them? No, wait, that’s not a reason… (Not a good one, anyway.)

Okay: because it’s a proper, Sixties-style, straight historical with note-perfect characterisation, and it uses the TARDIS team of Two, Jamie, Ben and Polly to great effect – and given how many of this era’s stories are missing, we need fanfic like this to make it up to us. What’s more it’s a straight historical, but with a cast of thousands, battles, and all the things that would have happened off-screen on TV (or with two stuntmen being unconvincing somewhere) described in glorious detail. Really. It’s absolutely brilliant – don’t miss out.

Last one! And I suspect I'm cheating a little bit, reccing three by the same author, but I have to confess I love this author so much that when time came to choose I couldn't find any others to recommend over them. This one, however, is at least quite different in tone to the last two...

We Could Go On Loving In The Same Old Way
Author: JJPOR
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1161
Author's Summary: He would do anything for her… post-Doomsday AU “fix it” fic.
Characters/Pairings: Ten / Rose
Warnings: None listed, but it's a bit dark. Also, spoilers in tone if not in content for recent episodes.

Recced because:
I'm leaving as I came in; dark...

I'll be honest; although I've really enjoyed the new series, some of the decisions made throughout it haven't really thrilled me; I'm not really much of a 'shipper and I've found the Tenth Doctor at times really difficult to like. Which is why I like it when the fic -- and the writers of the show proper -- actually acknowledge this. This fic claims to be a post-"Doomsday" AU, but as the author acknowledges it's actually more of a post "The Waters Of Mars" fic; it doesn't actually spoil anything from that episode, and I won't spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen it, but it essentially depicts a Doctor has decided to reverse old wrongs in his life... and why he really, really, really shouldn't. It's dark, bleak and confronting, and subverts all the "Doomsday" 'fix-it' fics which seek to bring Rose and Ten back together by taking it to an extreme that shows why this might not be such a good idea after all.

*** Anyway, that's all from me; as I (belatedly) pass on to my successor, I hope you've enjoyed the fics I've offered to you (even though I did sort of squeeze several of them in at the last minute!), and I hope you all have a happy holiday period!

Warnings: Swearing

Recced because:
Anyone who has even vague memories of either Starsky and Hutch or The Professionals, depending on what side of the Pond you grew up on, will recognise the cliches being skewered here; namely, a lot of early eighties cops with cool cars and bad perms, one of whom has a 'hit things first and don't bother about the asking questions part' and the other who provides a 'vaguely cool-headed voice-of-mild-reason thing'. And they're skewered hilariously. And what gets me most of all is that this actually fits into the Whoniverse quite well; I suspect I'd actually rather see this than some of the spin-offs we did get...

Characters/Pairings: The Master (all of them), Ten, Donna
Warnings: None

Recced because:
It's such an obvious idea I can't believe I haven't come across it before; we've had multi-Doctor stories, why not multi-Master ones? It takes a challenge about Ten (being naked), Three (being chained to Ten) and cake and twists it to provide a hilariously cracky story about the Master attempting to collaborate with himself to bake the Doctor a birthday cake of all things. They collaborate about as well as the Doctor usually does with himself in these situations; personalities clash, minor irritants bloom and the Delgado Master in particular seems less-than-impressed by what his future has in store for him. Bliss.

Recced because: The author calls this "shameless Four/Romana" love, but personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. "In the Moment" is charming, with spot-on, sparkling dialogue between Four and Romana II as they spend a lazy day picking out clothes and relaxing in a park. There's also unexpected emotional depth here – the Doctor's reminiscences of his early life on Gallifrey and what drove him to leave, and the two Time Lords' acknowledgement that they're running away together not just out of love, but out of fear of the future. If you're a Four/Romana II fan, I can't recommend this story highly enough.

Story: Let Them Eat Cake
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2227
Author's Summary: Ten. Naked. Chained to Three. Covered in cake. Look, just don’t ask, okay?
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Multi-Era, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: I wavered all week trying to decide if I was going to rec this fic. I have read and reread both the story and its reviews. This story is hilarious and a fine example of how wonderful fluff can (and should!) be. It's hilarious from start to finish and is enjoyed even by those who cannot call themselves the author's crony. I don't want to say much for fear of spoiling it, but be prepared to laugh until you cry.

Story: Dancing
Author: [livejournal.com profile] jjpor
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3781
Author's Summary: Sometimes a dance is just a dance. And sometimes, it is much more than that. And sometimes, it is hard to tell which it is.
Characters/Pairings: Four/Romana II
Warnings: *scratches chin thoughtfully* Hmmm, I guess you might want ice cubes nearby? Especially if it's warm.

Recced because: Because it's so very, very hot. No, really; it's one-step-removed smut, in that no actual sex happens and yet it's most definitely highly erotic. And intense. And intimate. Actually, maybe I shouldn't have posted this on a hot summer's day?

Story: Protect and Survive
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 49,717
Author's Summary: The Doctor and Ace find themselves in a darkly altered version of the 1960s we know; somebody has been meddling with history, raising the spectre of nuclear Armageddon, and that somebody needs to be stopped.
Characters/Pairings: Seven, Ace
Warnings: Swearing, violence, graphic descriptions of the aftermath of nuclear war

Recced because: I was desperately hoping this story would be finished by the time my turn came up to rec. I know I just gave you a Seven story, but this one is very different and it needs a shout out:

This story doesn’t flinch. It goes dark as anything I’ve ever read on the teaspoon, but the terrifying part is that it goes dark while keeping every moment completely in-character. That, combined with the eerily beautiful descriptions of atomic war, is enough to give you nightmares. JJPOR shows us a version of the sixties which might have happened, had events transpired just a little differently. He spins a plot that keeps you reading, and gasping, and guessing at who might be responsible. The whole story is absolutely peppered with pop-culture references. Read this if you want a meaty, timey-wimey plot with perfect characterization. But don’t, I beseech you, read it late at night with the lights off…

Story: Ground Rules
Author: JJPOR
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3554
Author's Summary:“The Doctor?” The Brigadier thought about that for a moment. “He’s the Queen’s sworn enemy as well?”
Characters/Pairings:Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Sergeant Benton, UNIT
Warnings: None

Recced because: Another great fic arising from continuity niggles - this one being the obvious question of where exactly was Torchwood in the 70s when the Doctor was working for UNIT and fighting off aliens on a weekly basis while patently not being arrested? The result is a satisfyingly twisty, Spooks-style spy story that explains why. And has the Brigadier and UNIT getting the better of Torchwood's sinister men in grey. Read it and cheer.

Story: A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes
Author: [livejournal.com profile] jjpor
Rating: Teen, I suppose.
Word Count: 3075
Author's Summary: They say be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it. How much worse must it be to get it and then lose it?
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Romana II, Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness.
Warnings: Angst.

Recced because: It's Nine/Romana, which is awesome by default. Seriously, though, it's a bittersweet 'what if' account of the Doctor and Romana trying making a life for themselves in the ruins of the war, only having each other to cling to. Or is it? Can be read as a part of [livejournal.com profile] jjpor's War in Heaven series or by itself.

Story: Alien Abduction
Author: JJPOR
Word count: 43269
Rating: Teen
Author's Summary: UFOs! Men in Black! Psychedelic Hippies! Tentacle-Beasts from Dimension X! New Mexico, 1968: Evil lurks beneath the Diablo Mesa as the Doctor and Romana take on the might of the Military-Industrial Complex; the Military-Industrial Complex probably ought to be very scared.
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor, Romana II, K-9
Warnings: Explicit violence, drugs, hippiness

Recced because: This story might as well be a Classic Who serial. It has suspense, creative aliens, entertaining tertiary characters, not to mention delightful Four/Romana chemistry.

Story: Gaze into the Abyss
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 22, 811
Author's summary: She wanted to make a difference; she wanted to do good. She wanted to be able to say that she had done something more with her life than simply watching. Most of all, she wanted to be like him, to please him. Events dictated otherwise.
Characters/Pairings: Various Doctors/Romana II, Leela/Andred, Davros, K9, Fourth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Eighth Doctor, Jacobi!Master, Daleks, and various assorted Time Lords
Warnings: Sad and long. Bring tissues. Also, explicit violence (but then it is a war story.)

Recced because: Tonight you get two Calufrax recs from me! I've already recced the short one; this is the long one. Believe me, it's worth every sentence.

Gazing Into the Abyss is, without a doubt, my favorite Time War fic. It's written from the perspective of Romana and through her JPOR does an excellent job of showing the horrors of war. We begin with Romana in all her youth and idealism, wanting to do good and finding the role of President as the perfect way to accomplish this and we end at the end of Gallifrey herself, the final hour. It's sad and heartbreaking, but the writing is beautiful and there were moments reading this where I forgot that it isn't actually canon. I cannot recommend this one more.

Story: A World, Burning
Author: JJPOR
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2725
Author's summary: So, how do you go from playing the spoons and misquoting proverbs to ruthless genocide in the course of one inter-season hiatus? By deciding to do unto others as they would do unto you, and deciding to do it first.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace, Ninth Doctor
Warnings: tissues may be needed

Recced because: I won't lie to you, this story hurts me to read. It's a good hurt, though, and it's so very well-written that I keep coming back to it no matter how hollow it makes my stomach feel. The way it explains the evolution of the Seventh Doctor from the clown of his earlier, sillier days to the Machiavellian schemer of his later, darker serials seems true somehow to me. I'm not sure how to explain it, except that this fic just fits in canon for me, slotted in as perfectly as if it were a saner part of the Cartmel Master Plan. The initial conceit of the Seventh Doctor accidentally running into his newly regenerated future self on an alien planet is eerily plausible and JJPOR's character voices are spot-on. I'm so very, very glad I stumbled on this fic.
