Story: Afterward, Clear the Table
Author: Styrofoam monster
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1795
Characters: Jo Grant, The Master (Simm)
Author's summary: AU. Jo Grant has a visitor.
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is a sad but interesting AU in which an older Jo converses with an oddly familiar visitor who shows up on her doorstep bearing grave news. The ensuing conversation alternates between measured wariness and stark candidness as old wounds and new are brought up, with the passage of time and the burden of grief poignantly leveling the playing field between them for one brief moment. A fascinating character study.

Story: A Few Things and a Lizard
Author: Beer Good
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2,820
Author's Summary: When Clara doesn't join him after the events of "Deep Breath" the Doctor picks up another companion. A big, sexy woman with legs up to here, a tail that won't quit, and big, nasty, pointy teeth. Yes, the Doctor is joined by a T Rex in the fix-it fic to end all fix-it fics.
Characters/Pairings: Adric, Clara, Danny, Harriet Jones, Ianto, Jack, Martha, Rory, Sarah Jane, Wilf, Twelfth Doctor, Simm!Master
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor has had many companions over the years, but never, to the best of my knowledge, a T. rex, much less the one from "Deep Breath." And let's just say it's remarkable how differently certain situations might have played out had a gigantic carnivore been brought into the mix. (Davros never stood a chance.) Best of all – and unlike a number of companions – our dinosaur friend finally gets a happy ending, and a fate she earned far more than what really happened to her in her one onscreen episode.

Story: You Know Me Better
Author: hangingfire
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1,011
Author's Summary: As the Master's prisoner, the Doctor gets to know the connection between pop music and world domination.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), The Master (Simm)
Warnings: None...apart from mass murder on an apocalyptic scale.

Recced because: I find that even all this time and a number of re-watches later, I still have an ambivalent relationship with The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords. Sure, it's a deeply flawed two-parter (I won't have a word said against its prologue, Utopia, mind you - one of the very best Ten episodes, imho), and Magic!Fairy!Doctor and John Simm's more self-indulgent moments as the Master aren't to everyone's taste (or to mine, really)...but there's still something deeply compelling about it. I think in part it's that dark, pessimistic streak Russell T Davies shows in many of his better stories. When RTD allows himself to imagine horrible things in the context of Who (or Torchwood), he doesn't half imagine them.

Simm!Master has arguably been eclipsed by Missy in the NuWho Master stakes, and in the hearts of many fans, but there's something about him, something unhinged and disturbing. He's the Master with all of the brakes off, every pretension to being a gentleman-villain or cackling supervillain stripped away so that the pure evil and madness can bubble through. He actually does what the Master has spent a lot of time threatening to do, and on an almost unimaginably vast scale. Of course, at the same time he remains very much cackling a supervillain, but there are moments when the camp actually complements rather than detracts from the chilling murderousness of his actions, probably none more so than the all-singing all-dancing mid-story cliffhanger where he unleashes the Toclafane upon the Earth.

And this fic takes its lead from that moment and others in its consideration of Simm!Master in relation to his appreciation of popular music. In doing so, it absolutely nails his character and his relationship with Ten in that story, the traditional Doctor-Master "thing" stretched to its breaking point and taking on a new level of dysfunction. The conceit that as the Master gets more violent his taste in music grows more flamboyant is at once amusing and telling in what it tells us about the motivations behind him being the way he is (I think, ultimately, it's all about acting out for the Doctor's benefit). Ten's pain at being the captive audience for this show is also captured very well indeed, rising above run of the mill Ten!angst to evoke a genuine sense of sadness, horror and despair.

So if you like your Master fic dark and horrifying, you ought to like this one a great deal, as do I. Please go and have a read and if you agree, be sure to leave some words for the author.

Story: Kept Man
Author: Aralias
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 30953 words
Author's Summary: In Scream of the Shalka, REG!Doctor (the ninth Doctor who almost was) was seen travelling round the universe with a robotic Master for no apparent reason. The ninth Doctor (who actually was) has a much better reason for travelling with a robotic Master, given that his entire race are dead. This fic assumes that he was and that the Master just kept out of sight so as not to alarm anyone.
Characters: Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Mickey Smith, Professor Yana, Rose Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (9th), The Master (Jacobi), The Master (Other), The Master (Simm)
Pairings: Shalka!Master/Nine, Shalka!Master/Ten, Doctor/Master generally implied
Warnings: Explicit sex, swearing (goodness, there’s a warning for that? Huh.)

Recced because:

A little about the author. )

Kept Man is relatively early but essential work from an essential writer in Doctor/Master and, really, the fandom. This fic tracks the first three series of the reboot, imagining that all along, an android version of the Master, built by the Doctor, lives in the TARDIS, preferring not to interact with the Doctor’s various human companions (a plot device that pulls on Scream of the Shalka’s presentation of the Doctor and an android Master voiced by Jacobi living together). It slots neatly into the show as we know it, but not in a facile, consequence-free ‘episode coda’ kind of way. ‘The Doctor keeps the Master on the TARDIS after the events on the Valiant’ is a big subgenre of Doctor/Master fic (especially the fic that came right after s3) (Kept Man is also probably a little influenced by Ariastar’s generally well-regarded Ten/Simm!Master alternate series—alternate series 4 and 5 are another sort of sub genre.). Aralias is engaging with that here, but pulling the trend/trope in directions that chime with her overall interests and sensibilities.

A little about why this fic is compelling and important. )

Story: Self-Preservation
Author: Memory Dragon
Rating: teen
Word count: 16429
Characters: Delgado!master, Three, Simm!master
Summary: Running for his life with the Master, the Doctor finds someone he just can't leave behind.
Warnings: This fic is part of a well balanced diet of angst and cuteness. The Master gets a bit beaten up (off screen abuse of the insane on backwater planets) and there is a small bit of violence towards the Doctor, but I don't think it's anything major. Just a bit of choking, really.

Recced because: Self-Preservation features two incarnations of the Master, and Memory Dragon writes them both splendidly (though of course, anything Memory Dragon writes with the Master is guaranteed goodness). This fic shows the trust between the 3rd doctor and his master, something that has been lost in their later regenerations, and the mercurial nature of simm!master, and offers a believable explanation for how Delgado becomes who he will be. The story is very much one of contrasts, a moment of truce in a conflict that almost feels like a farce because it's obvious in this fic that Three and his master don't hate each other - rather the opposite. The concern the 3rd doctor and Delgado!master show for each other only underscores how bitter their battles will become. The conversation between the two Masters was also well done, with Delgado characteristically dismissive of his older self's melodrama. And the ending is excellent.

I could go on about it all day -- go ahead and read it!

Characters: Jackson Lake, Simm!Master
Summary: There were days when Jackson Lake woke up safe in the knowledge that he was Jackson Lake, mathematics teacher, friend to Rosita, and father of Frederick Lake. Then, there were other days.
Warnings: none

Recced because: Even though I was unfamiliar with Jackson Lake, I immediately fell into the narrative. The story is tightly written, using Jackson to give an outsider's perspective on the Master. Jackson/ the Doctor is a great character and his interactions with the Master were witty and smart. The ending packs a particular punch.
Oh, and the remixed drabble, linked in the author's note, is also very much worth reading.

Recc'ed Because: A dark, imaginative, and brutal AU where the Doctor and the Master end up on Earth, almost domestic but with old habits that die hard. There is an amazing amount of depth packed into so few words. The poetic dread of being the last of their kind, of fitting nowhere, not even with each other--simmers just under the surface of this story, unstated but pervasive. I love the discussion of Gallifreyan synonyms and tenses. I am not sure whether to be happy or sad at the ending.

Author's Summary: The Master finds himself resurrected by Servalan. She’s not amused. Crossover with Blake's 7.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Simm)
Warnings: None

Recced because: There are plenty of examples of crossovers that plunge the Doctor or his companions into another fandom. It's much rarer to find a story that puts together villains from two fandoms. When the author is the immensely talented Selena, one of the villains is the Master, and the other is the beautiful but deadly Servalan, sparks are sure to fly...

Story: The Pandora Project
Author: Calapine
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 53,658
Author's Summary: At the end of series three, the Doctor and the Master end up travelling together and totally manage not to destroy each other or the universe. More or less. Meanwhile, Martha gets a job offer from UNIT, Jack fails to realise his team are a bit useless, and there's a giant squid for no good reason whatsoever.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Simm!Master, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones

Recced because: This story has been on my to-be-recced list practically since [livejournal.com profile] calapine first posted it to LiveJournal, but I haven't gotten around to reccing it until now because I wanted to re-read it first, and could never quite find the time to sit and read a 53,000-word fic. But I thought I'd spend a few minutes at least skimming it this weekend ... except that "skimming" suddenly turned into "do nothing else until you finish reading this amazing fic in its entirety."

Seven years after Series 3, fandom has long since turned "the Master survived the events on the Valiant and travels with the Doctor instead" into a well-worn trope, but rarely is it handled as wittily, in-character, and compellingly as it is here. There are cameos from Classic Who characters, endless snark between the Tenth Doctor and the Master, and yes, a giant squid -- a vampire squid, to be exact, because if you're going to have a giant squid in a Doctor Who story, it might as well be a vampire, too. And there is also, of course, a fine plot holding all of this together, one that seamlessly blends the classic series with the new one, but saying more would spoil it. If you didn't have weekend fic-reading plans before, I hope you do now.

Author's Summary: The white-hot fire is everywhere, his neurons screaming for relief. And he can't block the signal, he can't shut the chemokines down, but there is one thing he can do.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (11th), The Master (Simm)
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Explicit Violence, Non-Con

Recced because: Do you love the Master? Do you love the tight tension, the hint of something more between the Doctor and the Master? Do you love to watch that explode; to come apart (while knitting everything together) in a lovely, twisted, terrible way? Don't lie. Of course you do. That hint of smoky, grinning, joyous darkness in all of us needs feeding now and again - and this tale...ohhh, this tale feeds it for sure! If you've always wanted to see the Master at some of his worst and yet, looking his finest while doing it - this is the fiction for you!

The lovely thing about the Master has always been deadly calm, patience, planning and the long-game as his goals. He displays these gorgeous qualities the best when he is completely focused on his old friend and enemy, the Doctor. Of course, we know a lot of the things he does is to get the Doctor's attention; but when the Doctor actually becomes the main focus of his attention. Well. That's when things get messy. (Unnggghhh!!)

Whereas yesterday's story was (ultimately) about strength, hope and friendship - today's story is about power, despair, pain and a mangled, perverted sense of love (and ownership). Obsessive, horrifying, frightening...and utterly, sinfully delicious. This is all about taking care of that darkness within. That toothy, smiling touch of horror that we all carry within will enjoy it. As will you. You can admit it.

If you are ever going to read a Master/Doctor story, one that touches on all the undistilled resentments and unrequited sexual tensions between them (with a decidedly lovely twist at the end), this is your fiction. This is so, so accurate and horrifying and it has become a personal type of canon for me, because if the Master ever got the chance, well...you'll have to read to find out, yes?

Small taste of Darkness here... )

Guhhh, yes!! Yes, yes, yes!! That ending...mmmm...*Shivers* I certainly hope you read this delightful fiction - and if you did, please leave the author a review. As you know, I firmly believes this only nets us more Awesome in the end. And who doesn't want more awesome?!

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3182
Author's Summary: He can't save them all. But if he's very lucky, maybe he can save just one.
Characters/Pairings:Ten/Simm!Master, Susan

Recced because: Confession time: I was bawling like a baby during Ten's farewell tour. Visiting all of his friends before he died was such a Ten thing to do. But the fridge logic moment is inevitable: how does he go from 'epic confrontation with the Time Lords' to farewell tour? Isn't he forgetting something? Or - let's be honest - someone? Someone who just exhibited a potential character turnaround of the sort Ten has canonically begged for on his knees? Someone whom leaving is tatamount to killing, since he can't exactly expect any kind of warm welcome back on Gallifrey? Never mind the whole 'burning' thing... I love you for many things, RTD, but the evenness of your writing is not one of them.

Fortunate, then, that travels_in_time has stepped up to fill the gap. If there were such a genre as an End of Time fix-it, I suppose this would be it: once more into the Time Lock, to right the last great wrong. Susan appears (rejoice!) to inject some added poignancy, a link from the beginning of time to its end (if you'll forgive me). This is the way Ten ought to have gone out: with none of the truly important things left undone.

Speaking of endings, this is going to be my last rec. Thanks again for having me! If you liked something I recced please let the author know. There's no such thing as too many reviews.

I began this week with a very serious story by Prochytes; I'm ending it with an exceptionally silly crossover by the same author, an indication of his or her range as a writer.

Story: Face Value
Author: Prochytes
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1762
Characters: The Master (Simm), The Rani
Author's Summary: When Eddy’s world fails to make sense it isn’t always because of the substance abuse (crossover with "Absolutely Fabulous").
Warnings: None
Recced because: I'm a sucker for crossovers, and this one manages to be extremely silly and perfectly logical, which is a neat trick if you can pull it off. Multi-era and great fun.

“You gotta spring me fast, Eddy.” Patsy rasped. Orange overalls were not a good look on her. “I can’t hack it in the Big House. Do you know what happens to the pretty ones in prison? They’ll eat me alive, Eddy. They’ll SUCK ME DRY!!!”

“No one’s going to suck you, sweetie,” Edina soothed. She glanced around the cell (small and dirty) before her gaze settled on the guard (large and clean). His natty red cap reassuringly indicated that someone around here understood about Matching Their Colours. “How exactly did you end up in military jail?”

Patsy’s pout would have been visible from orbit. “The bitch Jackie.”

“Your sister?”

“No. Not my sister. That’s the point.”

“I’ve lost you, sweetie.”

“Shame she bloody didn’t. ‘Did you know I was actually adopted, Patsy?’ Well, it was a relief to find that out, obviously. Sheltering under the same family tree as the cat-fancier was always a curse. But then she started waving around this kitschy little pocket-watch that the orphanage had just sent her. And when she opened it,” Patsy tried, from force of habit, to inhale on an imaginary cigarette, “that’s when things got weird.”

This ends my week of reccing; I hope you've enjoyed the stories.

Story: The Last Enemy
Author: Prochytes
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 9946
Characters: Gwen Cooper, Martha Jones, Martha Jones, Suzie Costello, The Master (Simm)
Author's Summary: Christmas Day in the Master’s Cardiff. Gwen Cooper is still Gwen Cooper. She doesn’t have much time to work out why.
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Swearing
Recced because: Gwen Cooper was one of the best characters in Torchwood, and I thought it was about time I recced a story that featured her. This one is a beauty, a Doctor Who / Torchwood crossover in which Gwen has to handle the events of The End of Time, with a little help from a very unexpected source.
It didn’t work on cats. The ebony ripple that had pulsed across the road two streets (eighty-seven heartbeats) back was still a feline. Ears flat against its head; eyes staring. Kitty couldn’t know what had just pissed all over the planet.

No hive-mind. The one she had pistol-whipped outside Asda (four streets, nine hundred and sixty-three heartbeats) had looked — briefly — just as surprised to see her as... (don’t remember, mustn’t remember, hold the thought by the rim so it can’t scald) as the first one. They weren’t sharing information telepathically.

He didn’t know she was coming, and this was still her town. Alien mastermind, my arse; you could live in Cardiff for twenty years and still not have a bloody clue what to do there of a Friday night. If she got the drop on him, she could take him.

How many times, though? Three? Ten? A hundred? Cardiff wasn’t a battlefield, now. It was a video-game, and not one where she got to be the shooter. Gwen Cooper had become the obstacle; the adversary; the poorly pixelated mook. Every time she won, he could restart the level. Harold Saxon only had to win the once.

And so Gwen Cooper ran for her life through the December dark (still fast, still very fast — the first trimester hadn’t yet got around to pilfering her pace), measuring out the streets of her city in footfalls and prodigal heartbeats, twisting her options like a blackjack player, and not making it up as she went along. Captain Jack Harkness had made it up as he went along, and hadn’t that ended well for everyone? Jesus fucking Christ, Jack, you had to go and bolt to the stars like the cheap little hustler you always were. Left our town with an exhausted, pregnant basket case for a champion.

Story: Hush
Author: lysia
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2643
Author's Summary:
A slashy alternative take on the scene in the warehouse in 'End of Time' before the soldiers kidnap the Master. The Doctor finds his
nemesis in the wasteland and tries to protect him. The Master decides to play a game.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Simm!Master
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because:   In the author's notes, lysia says she wrote this as a challenge to herself to escape from the trap of being too chatty when she writes.  I haven't been lucky enough to read any of her other stories, but I think she succeeds at her self-challenge.  There's no dialogue in the entire story, but it is gripping and personal and entirely captivating.

The relationship between the Doctor and the Master is so twisted I feel like I'd need a psychology degree to understand it fully.  There's an obvious power play dynamic between the Doctor and the Master in any incarnation, but Ten's desperation for a connection to his people makes the relationship between Ten and Simm!Master particularly messy.  In a lot of fics, that dynamic falls into some pretty dark territory, and can often ignore the fact that there is a deep connection between them.  I like lysia's take because while the Master does artfully pull the Doctor's strings and manipulate him through a mix of kindness and cruelty, in the end the Master knows when the game is over, and when it would go too far.  He lives to best the Doctor, not destroy him - whatever melodrama he may drum up, he loves the game far too much to risk losing his opponent.  And, no matter what face he puts on it, he needs the Doctor as much as the Doctor needs him.

Author's Summary: There are a lot of flaws in the process of evolution; the Doctor learns, slowly, in the dark, that nothing ever really changes.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Simm!Master
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recc'ed Because: Why yes, before I discovered Ten/Master fic I was a good little gen girl. But really, the world is better for Ten/Master crazy, love-hate relationship. And the sex and bondage. This one is dark (literally and figuratively), hot and twisted and kinky and alien, but it twists itself right back into shape again at the end. The Master and the Doctor need each other like yin needs yang; neither can ever stop. It is listed as incomplete; I think either the author didn't notice the "Complete" button on Teaspoon, or they imagined this as the start of a series. Anyhow, it stands alone amazingly as is, and the end is creepy in its ambiguity. If you like NC-17 Ten/Master fic, spare on dialogue but spot-on when it comes, and everything wrapped around a brilliant study of the characters, yeah, go on and read it. Not at work, though.

Recced because: This is the story that made me fall in love with the New London High series. It's one of the most innovative, captivating AUs I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The author seamlessly inserts the characters of Doctor Who into the setting of a teen drama, without losing any of the fantastic characterizations that makes them unique in the first place. It cleverly blends elements of canon, yet re-imagines the show as something entirely new, and entirely wonderful.

There's a blossoming 9/Rose love story, a super-shy and awkward Rory, a flirty teenaged Jack, and even a nod to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And, because every high school drama needs its villains, there's Harry Saxon and his evil minions, the Dalecki brothers.

Excerpt )

Before you go off to read it, here's a quick lowdown on the Doctors at New London High. All of the Doctors are related to one another, and all of their names are variants on 'John Smith.'

Evan is Eight, John is Nine, Sean is Ten, and Ian is Eleven. These four, along with the majority of their companions, are high school students. The other Doctors are parents and uncles, and Sarah Jane is Evan and John's mother.

I hope you enjoy this story as much as I did, and, if you do, feel free to let the author know!

Title: Those Who Live a Life Without
Author: Queen of the Castle
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 9911
Author's Summary:Ten/Rose. Rose doesn’t whisper, “Don’t,” as she’s been dying to ever since she first had any inkling that the Doctor was planning something that she wasn’t going to like. It’s not that it doesn’t need saying. There’s just no point.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler/The Doctor (10th), The Master (Simm)
Warnings: Explicit violence
Recced because: THIS FIC. Is all kinds of gorgeous. The descriptions and the bag and...just read it.

Story: Master Calendar
http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=19857
Author: Evilawyer
Rating: PG 13
Word Count: 5678
Author’s Summary: Crossover with “Angel”. Wolfram & Hart sign up a very important new client with an ugly family law problem.
Characters: The Master (Simm), Tenth Doctor, Angel, Spike, Illyria, Harmony.
Pairing: Tenth Doctor/The Master (Simm), references to The Master/Spike
Warnings: Spoilers for “Angel” Season 5 and classic Who.
Recced because: Fun and cleverly cracky crossover. It’s always fun to see an outsider’s perspective on the Doctor/Master relationship and Spike and Angel’s reactions are perfect. It’s totally believable that Spike and the Master would get along so well and their mockery of the Doctor is delightfully mean and in character.
Excerpt: Observing the interaction between the Doctor and the Master, Spike reached what he thought was a sagacious conclusion. He then reached the decision to share it with the entire room. “You two bicker like old and very unhappy marrieds. Maybe you should think of getting a divorce.” Turning to Angel, he said “Angel, are you sure you don't know the Doctor from way back? Because it sounds like you learned a thing or two from him about how to pick up blond teenaged girls.” Feeling like he should make at least a token attempt to regain control of the situation before abandoning all hope, Angel glowered at Spike. “Spike, not now. And I'm sure Mr. Master has some real legal problem he's here to see us about, not your crazy imaginings.”

With the importance of names being a hot topic on the show lately.. This seemed fitting.

Story: Your Name
Author: blaidddrwg
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 24,226
Author's Summary: Exploring the names chosen by the Doctor and the Master, as well as their original, or 'real' names.
Characters/Pairings: Romana I, Romana II, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (Academy era), The Master (Academy era), The Master (Other), The Master (Simm), The Rani (Academy era)
Warnings: I suppose there are some incesty-tones here, if you go with the theory that Koschei and Theta are brothers, but they are easily ignored if you choose to do so

Recced because: Throughout both classic and new Who the Doctor and the Master keep intriguing and making us guess about their original relationship. This fic explores the possibility that they may have been brothers (twins, in fact) and it strangely seems to fit. I don't think everyone will agree with this theory, but it's a nice framework for this fic and truly transforms the Koschei/Theta dynamics into two sides of the same medal.
The first few chapters give a really good feel, I think, of what they academy might have been like and the shenanigans the both of them might have gotten up to. More interesting is the tension that already starts to spiral out of control as both boys grow up and their relationship already begins to fracture. blaidddrwg focuses on the inner thoughts and telepathic life of the two main characters very well as well, really drawing the reader into the relationship and letting the audience get very close. This fic is definitely an interesting window into Time Lord psychology and shed a light on a possible angle of the Doctor's and the Master's history.
The last two chapters link all this prior, non-canon history to scenes from canon, completing the circle in a way. We readers read the academy chapters with our canon-based background and in the last two chapters we review this familiar canon within the framework blaidddrwg has given us in earlier chapters.

Even if you don't feel you can agree on the idea that the Doctor and the Master are brothers, I'd still advise you to read this fic if only because it offers so many interesting new angles to this set of characters who seem to be forever spiralling together - pulling and pushing at each other constantly.

Good golly, miss molly—stop the presses, folks cuz I’ve got a news flash for you.  Slight retooling of my original plans for recommendations this week, but this one couldn't wait!  Forget about fish fingers and custard;  it’s time for some fish fingers and mustard.  Hold onto your fez, this one is tricky!

Title: Fish Fingers and Mustard
Author: Napier
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5734
Author’s Summary: A Police Box crashes to earth in a Leadworth garden. Deja Who? Maybe not...
Characters: If I told you, it would spoil everything
Warnings: none  (one part may be a bit much for really young readers)

Recommended Because it is intricate, hilarious, technically well-written, and so clever you will be jealous in every bone of your body if you are a writer.  Honestly, it's one of those "why didn't I think of that??" stories that you smack yourself in the head over, but it is so well done, you don't mind that someone beat you to it.  This fast-paced tale is a puzzle wrapped inside a puzzle that is and isn’t about who and what you think it is about, but it all so hauntingly familiar (from that garden scene on) that you'll be convinced--more than once--that you've figured out all the timey-wimey loveliness.  Just when you think you do know what is going on, the author turns a corner and pulls the wool over your eyes again.  The amount of thought and verifying of background logistics that had to have gone into this is mind-boggling and the attention to detail will utterly delight fans of the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors' eras.  The characterization of these new era characters is excellent, the funny parts are rip-roaringly funny, the creepy parts are proper creepy, and there's so little I can say without spoilering it all.  Go. Read. It. Now.  You will not be disappointed.  Oh.  One last thing.  Eating and drinking while reading this story could be hazardous to your health.

Because it is Saturday night, how about a quick fic to read before heading off for a night of fun (whether it be scrabble, night clubs or a night in with a good book)?

Story: Five Times the Sonic Screwdriver Proved Worse than Useless
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 506
Author's Summary: “Never touch my sonic screwdriver."
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (9th), The Master (Simm)
Warnings: None

Recced because: The humour. The Master and his twisted but oh so wonderful mind. Nine and his grouchiness. Donna Noble. The one liners. Jack bloody Harkness and the mental image of TARDIS humping. THE FIFTH TIME! Seriously, a great fic that proves you don't need many words to pack a humorous punch. This story still puts a smile on my face and hopefully on yours as well.

I am departing for my weekend job where I don't have access to the internet, so this is sadly my last rec for the week. Thanks for having me! It was, as always, tons of fun. Now for the rec:

Story: Time Raven
Author: tweedymcgee
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 798
Author's Summary: A mashup of "Time Crash" with Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven," by way of Doctor/Master shipping. Because.
Characters/Pairings: Doctor/Master (by way of Ten, Five, Ainley!Master and Simm!Master), Tegan
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I will admit that I kind of harassed Tweedy into posting this on Teaspoon, because I just had to recommend some of Tweedy's awesome mashup poetry. If you've read that summary and didn't immediately click on the link, I'm not sure what more I can do here, but I'll try. This is a take on the Time Crash short, from Five's point of view. Set to The Raven, with a brilliant eye for meter and turn of phrase, and some awesome references to Who canon and the original poem. It's amazing. Just click on the link, go! You will not regret it.

Story: Wilf Saves the Day
Author: Adrian Tullberg
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 589
Author's Summary: Spoilers for The End of Time Part One.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), The Master (Simm), Wilfred Mott
Warnings: None

Recced because: Adrian Tullberg seems to specialise in simple solutions that mess up solve the Doctor's complicated problems. This is one of them, and it's a beauty, a hilarious way to derail The Master in The End of Time.

Posted using Livejournal's scheduled posting thing since I may be off line for the next couple of days - apologies if anything goes wrong.

Story: In Dreams
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3290
Author's Summary: Time Lords don't, by design, dream. But the Doctor is a very different sort of Time Lord.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Eighth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor, the Master (Delgado), the Master (Ainley), the Master (Roberts), the Master (Jacobi), the Master (Simm)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It's a fic that starts with Gallifreyan language, continues with the Doctor waiting for a bus, and has the respective Doctors and Masters - well, challenging each other, or rather, the Doctor challenges himself. And run away from that challenge in the same time. What is there not to absolutely love?

Story: For Destruction, Ice
Author: AstroGirl
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1010
Author's Summary: Combines two requests: "Something where the Master takes on Lucy as a companion and wife without anything so underhanded as mind control and the like" and "the Master takes Lucy to Utopia."
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Simm)/Lucy Saxon
Warnings: None.

Recced because: The author's note says it was supposed to centre on the Master, but much like in many of the good Doctor Who stories (and episodes), it's the companion that's at the centre of the piece, and in this case, this companion is Lucy Saxon. Despite being relatively short, this story does a good job of studying her without giving a too easy way out.

Story: I Can't Decide
Author: TigerKat
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 576
Author's Summary: Harold Saxon and Azula: what never was, but could have been. Written for the f_s meme. Crossover with Avatar: the Last Airbender.
Characters/Pairings: Simm!Master, Azula
Warnings: None

Recced because: If you're not familiar with Avatar: the Last Airbender, you won't be able to follow along here – but if you are, this story is a rare treat, bringing together two characters with very similar ideas about power, deviousness, and how to manipulate people to get what you really want. Azula's got a cruel idea for the Master, and he's got some advice on Zuko's psychology in return; and in short, this story will make you very disappointed Azula and the Master never met in either canon.

And now, the first rec, a bit of humor to lighten up your Monday. (If yours is anything like mine is going to be, you'll need the laugh.)

Story: Lust of the Time Lords
Author: were_lemur
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 100
Author's Summary: The Doctor helps the Master make a different choice
Characters/Pairings: Jack, Ten/Simm!Master
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: In some alternate, much funnier universe, this is the real ending to "Last of the Time Lords." The Doctor's sworn never to speak certain words, but something tells me these aren't the words RTD had in mind. Probably, anyway.

Well, that’s it for me at [livejournal.com profile] calufrax. However, you can catch me reccing smut starting tomorrow at [livejournal.com profile] three_settings, and I have a few good selections prepared already. I’ll see you then.  But before I go, I’d like to rec one last fic.

Story: Look Who's Talking: Unbearable
Author: johne
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3702
Author's Summary: Chaos in the nursery for the baby Doctor and his friends when the toys are brought to life (toddler AU).
Characters/Pairings: River Song, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Eleventh Doctor, the Master, Izzy Sinclair, Jamie McCrimmon, Tegan Jovanka
Warnings: no standard warnings apply
Recced because: Written for [livejournal.com profile] dw_straybunnies, this fic has the Master attempt to kill Eleven with Care Bears. And all of the characters except for Izzy are toddlers. Also, there’s killer Teletubbies and Peanuts references. Need I add more?

Story: The Problem With Boxing Day
Author: elisi
Rating:all ages
Word Count: 8,239
Author's Summary: Alexander Saxon (six years old) hated Boxing Day almost as much as he loved Christmas. How does Alex cope with his human family? And how does the Doctor deal with raising the child of his archnemesis?
Characters/Pairings: Lucy Saxon, Other Character(s), The Doctor (10th), The Master (Simm)
Warnings:. none

Recced because: A little something to get in the holiday spirit. This is one of a series of stories in a AU where the Master and Lucy had a son during The Year That Never Was. In this story, Alexander is forced to deal with his extended (human) family on Boxing Day. It does a good job of showing a child’s viewpoint, and is a microcosm of the central tension in this series – how Alex reconciles the fact he loves both his father the Master, and the Doctor, who is helping raise him, and how needs to find his own path between the two of them.

Hello! Back again for my third reccing slot, and very happy to continue the fine tradition of Calufrax. I'm the one who recs an absurd amount of Four/Master - or did last time. I shall try not to do that so much this time. Right! So, here is a story-

Oh.

Wait.

Story: Operator, Operator
Author: neveralarch
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 6107
Author's Summary: The Master works as a phone sex operator in order to kick-start his political career. That's it, really.
Characters/Pairings: Doctor/Master, One through Ten/Simm!Master
Warnings: BDSM, Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: With such a prompt this fic could have been a disaster. In neveralarch's hands it becomes a thing of lightness and grace, deceptively funny (so funny - biting down on things so that nobody asks what the hell is so funny!funny) and actually dark and sad - while still being funny. Essentially, what I'm saying is, this fic is like Simm!Master distilled into a fic about the Doctor's outlandish sexual practices. And that it's hilarious. Please read it, even if you don't ship it.

Excerpt - cut due to swearing )
[identity profile] gibbous.livejournal.com
Hi, I'm gibbous, leamichelle on Teaspoon, and something far less polite practically everywhere else. My attention span currently holds the Guinness World Record for the 100m Sprint, so you can deduce that my recommendations are either going to totally rock or just be really pretty, so there's nothing lost either way. Enjoy!

Story: One Eighty One
Author: silvercocoa
Rating: Teen/PG-13
Word Count: 6,220
Author's Summary: There were three hundred sixty-six days that were never meant to happen. Toshiko Sato remembers up until the day she died.
Characters/Pairings: Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Toshiko Sato, Owen Harper, Rhys Williams, The Master (Simm)
Warnings: Salty language, violence.

Recced because: The Year That Never Was has always intrigued me, simply because of what it is: a bunch of stuff happened, except for the persistent fact that nothing happened at all. I just figured that since we were cool with being utterly screwed by Time Herself (that's what you get for messing with her boytoy), it would be okay to, you know, take soul abuse. After all, WWJDD? This lovely, incredibly story catalogues - weeks, days at a time - what Team Torchwood went through during the year of oppression and instigated terror by the hand of the Master. I don't usually do whump!fic in such epic proportions, but this was so believable and everyone was so in character that it completely overshadowed every reservation I had.
[identity profile] janeturenne.livejournal.com
Story: Need
Author: Lamiel
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 40,243
Author’s Summary: It isn't about what they want.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Simm!Master
Warnings: BDSM, Explicit Sex, Explicit Violence, Swearing
Recced because:

There are a whole lot of ‘The Doctor and the Master travel together after the Year That Wasn’t’ fics, but few that play with that familiar theme in such an elegant, satisfying and sexy way as this one. And what makes this particular fic unusual, in my opinion, is the fact that it addresses the full range of both Time Lords’ personalities, Ten's in particular. The Master is still violent, still a would-be conquerer, but he's also got those protective instincts towards the Doctor that are such an important part of Delgado and Ainley's characters. The Doctor is still a peace-loving hippie hero, but he's also subject to the 'vengeful god' moments that many ficwriters forget when writing Ten. The sex is hot and well-penned, and manages the difficult balancing act of including kink without being eaten by it; there's some punishment/pain play, but it's there because it's relevant to the plot, and not just as kink for kink's sake. The Time War, and its aftereffects on both of them, are dealt with well and convincingly. Overall, this fic is a very enjoyable read, and well worth a look.

So here's my last fic :( It was a lot of fun and I hope you all enjoyed them :)

Story
: Without You
Author: Memory Dragon
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 17056
Author's Summary: Surprised to find the Master at his home, the Brigadier is immediately suspicious. The Brigadier is eventually forced to admit the even more surprising fact the Master isn't there to stir up trouble. Faced with actually having to help the Master, the Brigadier resigns himself to a few more adventures.
Characters/Pairings: Simm!Master, Brigadier, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: In the novel "The Face of the Enemy" the Master says the Brigadier makes a fairly worthy opponent (or something like that) and in this fic that respect for the Brigadier shines through. In The End of Time the Doctor dies and the Master lives but he doesn't know what to do with himself. He turns to the Brigadier for help/in grief - Not something I would've thought of myself but after reading this I was like: "Of course he would!" This fic rekindled my love of the Brigadier :) The evolution the Master's character goes through is well done and I just love the role the TARDIS plays :D

Oops! Just noticed part 3 is not up on teaspoon but thankfully it is here on her Lj.
