Rec: Doctor Who and the Great Eclipse

Hello, I happy to be your reccer for the next seven days. You will see through my choices I love variety. I am game for anyone in a pairing with the doctor as long as it is well written and believable. You never know what you like till you try it. I hope for the next seven days my selections seem very interesting and that you might find a new favorite among them. All my posts will happen around the same time as this one.I don’t get much of a chance to use the internet until around this time perhaps a little later. Enjoy.

Story: Doctor Who and the Great Eclipse
Author: GM_Andy
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 214254
Author's Summary: The Time War left him shattered and alone. Experiments left her shattered with voices in her head. Survival threw them together. You aren't scared of the dark, are you? Before he met Rose - he had to live through this. 9th Doctor, River and Simon Tam, The survivors of the Hunter-Gratzner (special guest star: 8th Doctor, selected flashbacks). Slashy elements, pre-slash really. A Doctor Who-Firefly-Pitch Black crossover
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (9th), The Doctor (8th), Richard B. Riddick, Richard B. Riddick/The Doctor (9th), Other Character(s)
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Swearing

Recced because:
It crosses 2 of my favorite shows and 1of my favorite movies. This is the second in a series called the Soul Web I skipped the first part of the series because I found it interesting I liked the crossovers of this series better. I like it because it is very well written, stays close to the Pitch Black plot, and a very interesting portrayal of The Doctor , the Time Lords and of the Time War. There are two sequels one completed and one that is a WIP that has no made it from FFN to Teaspoon. The Teaspoon site the one that are revised and has parts that require an adult rating that is not allowed on FFN.

What Never Should Be by blucougar57

Story: What Never Should Be
Author: blucougar57
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 165,325
Author's Summary: What might have happened if Jack had refused to join Torchwood in 1899?
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones
Warnings: N/A

Recced because: I love the good AU's and this is one of them. I found this story compelling because of the nature of the psychological damage Jack suffers in it, the relationship that begins to grow between Jack and Ianto as Jack begins to heal (it does eventually become Jack/Ianto), and how the canon characters respond to the two of them and to Torchwood's actions. I also like that the Doctor has to face up to and deal with the consequences of leaving Jack behind on the Game Station; I have never liked how that played out in canon.

It's a good "What if this happened instead of what did?" story.

Shades of Ianto by sarcasticchick

Story: Shades of Ianto
Author: sarcasticchick
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 34,165
Author's Summary: Ianto is more than just a teaboy.
Characters/Pairings: Ianto Jones, Jack/Ianto
Warnings: Muddled/dubious consent in chapter 4.

Recced because: This is an alternative view of Ianto Jones: his family, his heritage, his past and his abilities. It was written before Doctor Who Season 3 and Torchwood Season 2, so the information we discover from those wasn't available. I was, quite frankly, shocked that it hadn't already been recced.

In general, although there are exceptions other than this story, I don't enjoy Ianto protrayed as anything but a standard human with, at best, a middle class background. It is his humanity that I enjoy most about the character.

Shades of Ianto, however, although there's quite a bit of exceptional in both his background and heritage, keeps him "human"; he's still just a man in exceptional circumstances. He's not immortal, not overly powerful; he struggles with dealing with Canary Wharf, with Lisa, with Torchwood, with Jack. And it's those struggles that make the story.

I first read this story elsewhere, in which it was formatted as one long story. Here on Teaspoon, it's formatted as three; I've linked to the first "Prologue". There are two "Seasons" after that, but it is designed to be read as one story. The whole story is over 200,000 words.

A Very Original Sin, by X_Los

Story: A Very Original Sin
Author: x_los
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 6,797
Author's Summary: “Just my friendly pet goosnake. He makes a much better companion than a cat: just as independent, sheds less hair, and he's very hypoallergenic.” After the TVM, Eight acquires an unorthodox companion.
Characters/Pairings: Eight, goosnake!Master, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: I know x_los was last recced less than a week ago, so forgive me, but I would have been sad not to recommend this one. Where last week's rec was based around a clichéd premise, this is an 'original' one i.e. what would happen if after the TVM the Doctor had travelled with the ridiculous CGI gooey snake version of the Master (not dead - but of course) for a bit? Crack yes, but no more than 'canon' gave us, and oh what glorious crack it is. One of the things I like best about my OTP is the dialogue - but if the Master's a snake, he doesn't have any (not much, anyway) - fortunately Eight is a Doctor who can keep up his end of the conversation. Another thing, then, then I like about Doctor/Master is that it is a ship that spans the pretty ones and the not as pretty as Paul McGann ones. Goosnake fic should be ridiculous, but actually it's just business as usual because the Doctor is the Doctor, and the Master is the Master even if he's a snake made out of bad 90s CGI, and that's shown very well here. Also it's silly, and very funny, and very sweet.

The Crane Wife, by X-Los

So okay, sorry about the delay. On to the rec!

Everything that [info]x_los has ever written is brilliant. EVERYTHING. But of course, some brilliant fics are more brilliant than others, and one of those extra-brilliant fics is The Crane Wife. If you like slave!fic, you will like this story. If you don't like slave!fic, you will probably like this story anyway.

Story:The Crane Wife
Author: x_los
Rating:  Adult
Word Count: 46282
Author's Summary: The Doctor, a half-human renegade Time Lord who's never so much as set foot on his father's home world, has had a really rotten day. As if dying weren't bad enough, now he's facing the auction block. The renegade Time Lord Emperor of Hestin makes an ill-starred impulse buy.
Characters/Pairings: AU Fifth Doctor / Ainley!Master.
Warnings: It's a WIP, but only has the last chapter to go. Also explicit sex involving domination and a few consent issues.

Recced because: One of my favorite genres of fic is the cliche-done-right. The one that makes you realize why a subject is cliche in the first place: because it's awesome. This story is sweet, and adorable, and really funny. The Doctor and the Master, despite being alternate-universe counterparts, come off pitch-perfect. The descriptions are wonderful, the plot's engaging and well-paced, and the sex is really, really hot. What more could you ask for, other than the final chapter?

EDITED to fix font size. It was too small, now it looks too big. Sorry, guys.

Rec: Sohcahtoa by Petra LeMaitre

Story: Sohcahtoa
Author: Petra LeMaitre
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 7127
Author's Summary: One of the first truths the Doctor had tried to instill in her, and in so many of his travelling companions, was that it was never too late to run.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because: I couldn't go through this week without reccing a fic about my OT3. This fic is a hidden gem for this 'ship, and I'd recommend it even to those who don't ship them, because it is above all a fascinating foray into the Ninth Doctor's mind. Petra LeMaitre gives us a very interesting perspective on how Time Lords perceive the world. The banter between these three is also adorable enough to warm any heart.

(no subject)

Story: Temporary
Author: Weatherwax
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 32259
Author's Summary: A dark little Donna fix-it.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Donna Noble
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Swearing

Recced because:

Technically this story isn’t finished yet, but the main plotline is resolved and is lacking only an epilogue. So I feel okay reccing it, because it really REALLY does deserve the mention.

This is an AU take on the Tenth Doctor’s regeneration written before the End of Time. It is dark and visceral and terrifying (do NOT read this if you are squeamish) but it is also just a bit magical as Weatherwax brings Ten’s story full circle in the deepest volcanic bowels of a Sycorax ship, followed by Eleven, a study in contrasts, trying desperately to set things right before he passes out. His interactions with Donna range from hysterical to heartbreaking and this story is worth reading for their dialogue alone.

It’s also worth reading, especially right now, because it shows how the show always goes on, how the Doctor’s character changes, profoundly sometimes, but the essential formula stays the same. Never mind that these things never happened – never will happen – it’s still one a hell of a ride.

Rec: Back Home, by Van Donovan

Story: Back Home
Author: Van Donovan
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 14,923 (six chapters, each averaging at about 2,500 words)
Author's Summary: Turlough returns to Earth, not entirely of his own volition, and finds that while some things have changed, some are exactly the same.
Characters/Pairings: Turlough/Tegan, Turlough/Owen, Turlough/Various others/implied, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Toshiko Sato
Warnings: Explicit sex, swearing
Note: (this is taken from the A/N at the beginning of the first chapter) Helps to be familiar with Turlough's run on Doctor Who, or at least his intro triology/exit serial. Basic Torchwood knowledge helpful, but not required. Set in the three month glossed-over gap in Torchwood, somewhere probably late 2007, early 2008.

Recced because: The author managed to capture Turlough's personality perfectly and in such a subtle way that it's hard to pinpoint exactly what makes the characterization so perfect. The descriptions of things Turlough smells and feels are so detailed that it's hard to not imagine you're standing right there alongside him. And the intimate moments, while not as explicit as the warning implies, focus more on the emotions between the characters and not the physicality. Overall, a beautiful story that leaves you wanting more by the time you've finished the last chapter.

Betrayal by Edzel2

Story: Betrayal
Author: edzel2
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 5294
Author's Summary: Part One of my series, The Master Chronicles. This is Lucy's story, told through her eyes from when she first meets Harold Saxon to her final act of betrayal on board the Valiant.
Characters/Pairings:Lucy/SimmMaster
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Explicit Violence, Swearing

Recced because: This story is a bit more adult than many I've seen recced here but the ticklish subject matter is handled with a maturity and grace that speaks volumes. The eloquent words seem to pull you right into the brain of a young woman called Lucy and you can watch as horrified as she, herself, is as her world falls down. The author manages to rise above your insipid I-used-to-be-evil-but-the-Doctor-came-and-I-got-better portrayal f Lucy and shows instead a girl as human as you and I and as easily relate-able.

splinters by nonelvis

Story: Splinters
Author: [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis
Rating: Adult
Word count: 344
Author's summary: Prompt: Nine/Jabe, gardening.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jabe
Warnings: Semi-explicit treesex.

Recced because: An utterly amazing exploration of one of my favourite pairings involving a one-off-character from new school. The imagery is brilliant, and it's shot through with a wistful sadness mixed with a strange sort of optimism that's absolutely lovely. (I have to confess to a slight bias here: this was written for a prompt I left on the kink meme.)

Moving In, by Calico

Story: Moving In
Author: Calico
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 6,850
Author's Summary: Ianto's first day at work. AKA, Oblivious Jack is oblivious!
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Ianto
Warnings: Swearing, explicit sex, extremely complicated consent issues

Recced because: It's dead smack in the middle of yet another work-week; let's have some porn.

This fic isn't porn from beginning to end, though. It's porn nearly from beginning to end that manages to be one of the most brilliant Torchwood character studies I've read. Amazingly crafted, Moving In plays on everything we already know, rather than secrets the author holds, to deliver killer punchlines on so many levels at once. Darkly, bitterly funny, chilling, and hot all at once.

This fic seems to be well-known within TW fandom already; since I was clueless as to its existence until I stumbled on a rec somewhere not long ago, though, I wanted to share.

Rec: No Rest for the Wicked

Story: No Rest for the Wicked
Author: AND ([livejournal.com profile] neadods)
Rating: Adult
Author's summary: The Doctor, suicidal after the Time War, meets a younger, more innocent self - and decides to rewrite history.
Characters/Pairings: Evelyn Smythe, Six/Nine
Warnings: Explicit Sex
Word Count: 1523

Recced because: I really enjoy glimpses of the ninth Doctor pre-Rose because it allows for a much darker and often more dangerous Doctor than we see in the TV series. AND's Nine is written well in this dark mood, while the sixth Doctor, often written as cruel, is believably innocent. While there is sex in this fic (and yes, you did read that Six/Nine tag correctly) it's really secondary to the exploration of the Doctor's post-Time War guilt.

Rec: Doctors’ Night Out or a Whole Bucket Full of Crazy

Hello, everyone! I'm [livejournal.com profile] cosmic_celery (NotOnBoats on Teaspoon) and I'll be reccing a mixed bag of fic this week. I hope everyone finds something that they like!

Lets start off the week with a bit of good ol' fashioned crack.

Story: Doctors’ Night Out or a Whole Bucket Full of Crazy
Author: finmagik
Rating: Adult
Author's summary: The various incarnations of the Doctors' meet up for a night on the town, in the village on Christopher street.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Evelyn Smythe, Romana II, Vislor Turlough, Four, Five, Six, Eight, Ten, Four/Six
Warnings: Swearing
Word Count: 3,700 with both chapters

Recced because: The crack. Oh the glorious, incomparable crack. This has to be my favorite in the "a bunch of Doctors meet, hijinks ensue" genre, and every time I come back to it it's still funny. Much to Finmajik's credit, she uses the stereotypes for each Doctor to hilarious effect, but also manages to add a smidgen of believability to the whole drunken affair.

REC: Never Quite Normal by Pairadox Timeline

I've been trying to avoid reccing ongoing WIPs because I know many like to read completed stories. However the authors of this story updated this one today, so I just had to include it in the rec list.

Story: Never Quite Normal
Author: Pairadox Timeline
Rating: Adult/R
Word Count: 57,480; currently at 26 chapters
Author's Summary: He can't abide his face in the mirror or the memory of what he has done. The silence has made him insane and the insanity has made him dangerous. At the end of the Time War, the Doctor takes drastic steps, with the help of friends old and new. Nine AU.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose, Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge Stewart/Doris Stewart, Harry Sullivan, John Benton, Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith
Warnings: Adult language, some violence, issues of alcohol abuse.

Recced because: The authors take a broken and dmanaged post - Time War Nine, and spins a brilliant AU based on making a drastic path with his life. The bonds between himself and Classic Who characters, the Brigadier, Benton, and Harry Sullivan are lovingly evident and his meeting with Rose and the development of their relationship is painfully poignant. Both Classic and New Who fans will find unique gems to enjoy about this story and it's overall tale of pain, loss, and trying to put oneself back together again.

REC: Never Enough Time (Formerly "Time Heals") by CorellianBlue

I'm going to take us to angst tonight. I'm kind of in a foul mood and this story always fits the bill for me.

Story: Never Enough Time (Formerly "Time Heals")
Author: CorellianBlue
Rating: Adult/R
Word Count: 14850 spread over five chapters.
Author's Summary: Rose is gone. Without her, the Doctor is lost and uncertain he has the strength, or desire, to struggle through grief again.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, TARDIS, Sarah Jane Ten/Rose implied
Warnings: Attempted suicide.

Recced because: Suicide I realize isn't everybody's cup of tea, but this story really shows how one could be lead to attempt it, and the consequences of such an act. It takes the Doctor, post - Doomsday, to his lowest point and with some help, puts him on some semblance of okay again without Rose. It's often one of the things I'll read when I'm in a really angsty mood (like tonight).

I'll try for something somewhat happier tomorrow :-)

rec: roman holiday

Story: Roman Holiday
Author: yesjamie
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1346
Author's Summary: Ian and Barbara, alone together in the Roman villa.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, First Doctor, Vicki
Warnings: Explicit sex.

Recced because: This is a kinkmeme story, which of course means that it's smutty. However, the porn - while lovely in its own right - is made even lovelier by Barbara and Ian being in character and Barbara getting her History on. Admit it, you all think they got it on in the Roman villa!

rec: didn't ask, didn't tell by lithrael

Story: Didn't Ask, Didn't Tell
Author: lithrael
Rating: Adult
Word count: 1131
Author's summary: Jamie and the Doctor enjoy themselves quite near a lot of UNIT personnel. Set during The Invasion.
Characters/Pairings: Two/Jamie, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Sergeant Benton
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: It's short and sweet (and hot), but what I like most about this fic is the way that it nails the mischievousness of Two's characterisation and applies it to his sex life with Jamie. The Brig and Benton's little bits that top and tail it work very nicely too.

Striking Roots (Adult)

Story: Striking Roots
Author: DameRuth
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 4514
Author's Summary: After the Doctor suffers a terrible shock in the Flowers!verse, it's up to Rose and Jack to comfort him and each other.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose/Jack (in a fashion)
Warnings: Sex, angst

Recced because: This is part of DameRuth's very original and creative Flowers series. The basic premise is that though the Doctor loves Rose deeply, there are way too many biological barriers--physical and chemical--for them to become lovers. Thus, Jack becomes Rose's lover, not just because he loves her himself, but as the Doctor's surrogate. I recommend the whole series for its creativity and sense of melancholy. (Later in the series, Jack, being Jack, finds a way around the biological barriers, but by then, Rose is gone. Thus, Jack and Ten become lovers.)

Anyway, to the story: Our trio come across the horrifying aftermath of a fobwatched Time Lord gone terribly wrong. The Time Lord (unnamed) is long dead, and the fobwatch itself, containing the Time Lord's essence, has become a lethal object of temptation to anyone who finds it. Its discovery sends the Doctor into an emotional tailspin. Jack and Rose can take comfort in each other, but they can't offer the same to him--or can they? The story is told in gorgeous language, the bittersweet dynamic amongst the three of them laid bare as comfort is sought and given.

Sooner or Later (Adult)

Story: Sooner or Later
Author: Fantastik1973
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2540
Author's Summary: Nine/Rose. Just after his regeneration, the Ninth Doctor gets some advice from an old friend.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose, the Brig
Warnings: Semi-graphic sex

Recced because: I have a weakness for Nine just-after-the-Time-War fics, especially when he runs into someone who helps him. In this case, he lands right on the Brig's doorstep, quite literally. Scenes of this raw-and-wounded Doctor as the Brig and wife help him out via a place to rest, food and some hard-earned advice are intercut with beautiful, tasteful scenes of the Doctor and Rose making love. If you're not interested in the sex, you can skip over it in favor of some truly lovely interaction between the Doctor and the Brig. If you don't know the Brig, you can still enjoy the story. This is one of my long-time favorites that I come back to over and over. Enjoy!

Rec: Opportunity, by nonelvis

This is my final rec for the week. Thank you so much for having me and I hope that you enjoyed at least some of the stories I posted about. :)

Story: Opportunity
Author: nonelvis/[livejournal.com profile] nonelvis
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1854
Author's Summary: Reinette is accustomed to seizing opportunity, and the Doctor is opportunity waiting to be grasped.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Reinette
Warnings: Sexual situations, Light BDSM/Kink (D/s)

Recced because: This is one of the first smut!fics I ever read in fandom and I still think it is one of the hottest things that I've ever read. In this fic, [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis gives us a highly erotic interlude between a dominant!Reinette and somewhat submissive!Tenth Doctor. And while this fic may be categorized as a 'PWP', there is actually a plot there, lingering in the background, skillfully and subtly intertwined with the more sexual elements of the story. In fact, I actually think this fic is an excellent character study of both the Doctor and Reinette and an enticing look at the dynamics of their relationship with one another. There is a powerful, yet somewhat tragic story packed within this little gem, but also some gorgeous, sexy smut that never seems to lose its titillating spark after multiple rereads.
