Hi, I'm [personal profile] newmoonstar (Meadowlark on Teaspoon) and I'm finally squeaking in before my reccing period is over with a few great stories for you all! First up:

Story: Genius Loci (The Evidence of Things Unseen Remix)
Author: AstroGirl
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 685
Characters: Leela, Fourth Doctor, the TARDIS
Author's Summary: Leela does not believe in spirits. But she knows there is something here with them.
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's an interesting look at how Leela views the TARDIS, and how her supposedly primitive upbringing none the less gave her the ability to understand and connect with it without the Doctor having to explain it to her. A very lovely and insightful vignette.
[identity profile] a-phoenixdragon.livejournal.com
Hello, hello all!! I am PhoenixDragon and though I am rather late with it, I am your reccer for the next little while. All apologies for being late this week - but I shall try to make up for this by bringing some of the best work out there! Let me get started with this goodie...

Story: Concentration of Measure
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 227
Author's Summary: Trust is information. Information is the inverse of variance. The TARDIS must learn how to understand River Song.
Characters/Pairings: River Song, The Doctor (11th), The TARDIS
Warnings: Character Study, Introspection

Recced because: Not only is this author one of my favorites, but there is a good reason why: she can take concepts and thoughts that are beyond my ken and make them understandable. She can take ideas and facts that are not within my own realm of knowledge and make them simple to understand and grasp. She finds ways to do that with every tale - and this one is no exception. It is short (too short, in my opinion, but I feel that way about a lot of the fiction I read!) yet sweet, and even though I would love more, it says what it needs to within the words it is constructed of (my personal greed aside). This is Time and Events from the view of the TARDIS. That is a hard concept to grapple with in the first place, as we are a very linear species with a rather wonky understanding of time and events, even as they happen! Our memories aren't the best, either, to tell the truth. But here we have a character that has perfect recall (should She so choose) - in ANY event along the timelines. She is only restricted to Her (and Her Pilot's) events and timelines, but that is only because She no longer has access to the broader views and understandings of the TARDISes of Gallifrey.

But I'm getting ahead of myself here. This is a perfect little drabble about Sexy and how She 'sees'. What she CAN see and what She chooses to remember (whether it be the future or the past). I recommend anything from this author. But I'll give you this fic to jump off with.

Just a mere taste to get you going... )

I do hope you enjoy her work as much as I have! Be sure to leave her a review telling her so! And I shall be reccing another beauty here very soon...

Story: Being in the TARDIS
Author: dancingdragon3
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 300
Author's Summary: Being in the TARDIS is many things to many people.
Characters/Pairings: The TARDIS
Warnings: None, Action/Adventure

Recced because: Well, we all love a good TARDIS story. No matter the Era or the Doctor, She is always fascinating, warm, welcoming and mysterious. I wanted to share a story that showed this, so lo and behold, I not only find the perfect story-drabble, but an author who (sadly) has never been recced here before. This is an error I wished to correct - and so we have two marvelous things for one post! A marvelous author that has now been revealed - and a fantastic story that needed sharing.

This tale is short, but sweet. So I can't give too much away. But perhaps a little taste (as always!) is in order:

A taste as promised... )

Hopefully you found that intriguing - and that it entices you to go and enjoy this author's marvelous words! Be sure to leave a comment, so she knows how much you enjoyed her work!

Hello, hello all! I am PhoenixDragon (aka Mandy) - and I shall be your reccer these next couple of weeks. *Smiles* I'm very excited - and I am looking forward to sharing a lot of goodies with you before my time here is over. So without further ado, I'd like to get to my first rec of May!

Story: Burn Now (Or Die A Traitor's Death)
Author: Inkfire
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2092
Author's Summary: Before his death, the Doctor makes the hardest sacrifice. AU!verse, the Doctor destroys the TARDIS.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (11th), The TARDIS
Warnings: Alternate Universe, Angst, Character Study, Drama, Horror, Introspection, Standalone

Recced because: Well, first of all, this author is amazing. The images and feelings she paints with words can leave a lingering, lasting impression - and even if they can be a lot to take in and grapple with - they always leave you wanting more.

This tale is certainly no different.

It is an alternate universe, where the Doctor feels he has no choice but to remove his TARDIS from the hands of those who would harm Her or use Her for evil ends, by doing something equally as terrible. Nearing his own end and terrified and angry, he makes a choice that will haunt him for the few hours he has left. It is utterly, wholly believable. Suffocatingly dark. And endlessly sorrowful. A masterpiece in writing, in alternate timelines and it touches on the darkness the Doctor carries within that generally does not manifest on such levels...though he is perfectly capable of such. A marvelous read. One that you will carry with you. And even as it leaves you sad and haunted, you will find yourself searching her works for more brilliant words and tales! But I do not expect you to read just based on my recommendation (though you should), so a taste is in order, yes?

Story: Move

Word Count: 537
Author's Summary: TARDIS ansgt fic.
Characters/Pairings: The TARDIS, the Twelfth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: Written from the TARDIS' perspective, the fic portrays a situation where the TARDIS has to find a way to save the Doctor. Although the Twelfth Doctor is tagged in the fic, it could actually be any Doctor, so feel free to imagine your favorite. I love fics about the TARDIS, and this is one of the best I've read.

Story: Breaking the Bounds
Author: vvj5
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2416
Author's Summary:The TARDIS is nothing more than the Doctor’s means of escape – or so he tells himself. Any other thoughts concerning a mere machine would be quite nonsensical, wouldn’t they?
Characters/Pairings: The First Doctor, Susan Foreman, the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: Shortly after leaving Gallifrey with his granddaughter, the Doctor does his first bit of TARDIS maintenance. It's expertly written, with great character moments, but what I particularly love about this fic is how it shows us the beginning of what is, arguably, the central relationship of the entire series: the Doctor and the TARDIS. Next stop: everywhere.

So I was checking the tags earlier this week and noticed that I would reach my 100th rec this stint. And then I realized today (January 20th) is the eighth anniversary of the very first rec on calufrax! So I decided I would front-load my recs this week so these momentous occasions could co-incide :)

Luckily I have the perfect story to rec, as well.

Title: The Maze
Author: Rangersyl
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 977
Author's Summary: The TARDIS sang of joy and sorrow in that ever-present hum that only her bonded soul could hear. He wasn't listening.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: This one is a change of pace from the light-hearted ones I've recc-ed most of this week. On the forefront it's the story of the Doctor and the TARDIS coping with Donna's loss, and moving on. It's bittersweet and sad and hopeful with just a touch of melodrama, as we have come to expect with the series and especially Ten's run. But I especially like it because it's really a microcosm of the heart of the entire series, that endures and repeats with different faces, different names up to the present, even though the story itself is post-Journey's End and was posted not much later than the start of our recs experiment here at [livejournal.com profile] calufrax. I'm surprised no one's pointed it out here before. It reminds me of everything I love about the show--the alien madman and the blue box, and the human connections that keep them both grounded and running.

Author's Summary: The Doctor takes his young granddaughter for a very long trip- and they make their first encounter with their new home.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (1st), Susan Foreman, Other Characters, The TARDIS

Recced because: It is a beautiful and well-written take on a scene that many fans (myself included) have been curious about, the Doctor and Susan's initial departure from Gallifrey.

Story: Marital Arguments
Author: betawho
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 493
Author's Summary: The Doctor and the Tardis are having an argument; neither of them is going to back down.
Characters/Pairings: The Twelfth Doctor, the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: I was all set to start off with another of this writer's brilliant Eleven/River fics. Then I saw this, which was posted just last week, and I knew I needed to go in a different direction.

This is hilarious, cute as all get-out, and perfectly written. I seriously want this in an episode, because I can just see the look Capaldi would have on his face while delivering his end of the dialogue. His voice is flawlessly captured. You'll have a huge smile on your face after reading this gem!

Story: Delight
Author: PhoenixDragon
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 404
Author's Summary: The silence held its own color.
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, The TARDIS
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Eleven is alone in the TARDIS is a moment of angst, missing the Ponds, and the moment is painted so beautifully and completely here in so few words. It’s vivid, sharp, poetic – utterly gorgeous – as the Doctor can’t help seeing the significance of a colour – red. I’ve enjoyed an awful lot of this author’s stories, but this one has stuck in my head (with claws) ever since I first read it. I hope you like it, too.

Story: Friends In High Places
Author: nostalgia
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1753 words
Author's Summary: In which Torchwood completely fail to locate the Doctor while he's pretty much on their doorstep.
Characters/Pairings: The Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Liz Shaw, Jack Harkness, Donna Noble, the Tenth Doctor, The Master (Delgado), River Song, the TARDIS
Warnings: None stated

Recced because: The Doctor is thinking of getting a pet snake, the Brigadier fudge personal files and the Master takes a part time job at Torchwood. What is not to love? The fic consist of a couple of short scenes with various characters that are described spot on and why they want to find, or hide, the Doctor. I laughed out loud several times while reading it.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1,415
Author's Summary: The Doctor meets the TARDIS for the first time.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (Academy Era), the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's beautiful and sweet, with all the sense of adventures yet to come. Also, this is the only work Coryx has, according to their profile. And that's a shame, because I see talent here, talent which should not go to waste! I hope that, if at all possible, we can locate this writer and persuade him/her to return to Teaspoon and show us more of what they're capable of.

Characters/Pairings: Captain John Hart, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Lisa Hallett, Myfanwy, Other Character(s), Other Character(s), Other Character(s), The Doctor (Author-Created), The TARDIS, The TARDIS
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: Five Things stories are difficult to write with consistent quality, but this Torchwood story is a beauty, in which all five ficlets work really well. It's by an author who hasn't been recced here before, but has a good few stories on Teaspoon. I think we'll probably be seeing more on Calufrax.

Story: Bright As Starlight
Author: A Moment In Subtext
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4117
Author's Summary: The Doctor kept his word and was back in five minutes. He then took young Amelia out into the universe.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, The Doctor (11th), The TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'm really enjoying this still in-progress multi-chapter story that follows a "what if" scenario of season 5, had the Doctor come back for Amelia while she was still a little girl. It's pleasantly amusing and very very cute.
It goes episode by episode, adding amusing scenes to stories and alternate endings based on the difference in Amy's age. I think you'll all really like it.

Story: Still Life

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 934
Author's Summary: "The most tranquil place in the universe, and you're lamenting a lack of ungulates."
Characters/Pairings: Eleven, Amy/Rory, the TARDIS
Warnings: none

Recced because: Okay, this story was written for a prompt I left in last year's Eleventyfest fic exchange, but I'd rec it anyway, because it's as soothing and tranquil as the Eye of Orion itself. Besides, sometimes (usually Mondays), you need something soothing and tranquil. It's a deceptively simple slice-of-life piece that serves as a lovely coda for "The Doctor's Wife," in which everyone, Time Lord, companions, and TARDIS, gets a much-needed moment of peace after a difficult ordeal.

Author's Summary: In the end, there will be time to enjoy the classics -- and the old favourites. Written after "The Day of the Doctor".
Characters/Pairings: The Caretaker, The TARDIS
Warnings: Spoilers for Day of the Doctor.

Recced because: I couldn’t think of a better way to end this reccing stint than by sharing this wonderful post-50th anniversary fic with everyone. It’s a beautifully done piece in which the Caretaker delights in his chosen retirement. The descriptions, the suggestions of alien worlds, the small references, the way that it picks up on strands of the anniversary episode – it’s something special.

Author: ClocketPatch
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 476
Author's Summary: What comes, goes. What goes, comes. Everything in its time.
Characters/Pairings: The TARDIS
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s such a wonderful and unusual ficlet, exploring the TARDIS’s origins from her point of view. It’s strange and poetic and not-quite-linear and it’s another brilliant example of how much can be achieved in relatively few words.

Everyone's always busy on Mondays, so let's start week 2 with something short:

Story: Drabbling Through History
Author: Yamx
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 687
Author's Summary: Five drabbles connecting DW/TW characters with historical events/persons.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (9th), The TARDIS, Jack Harkness, Other Character(s), Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The TARDIS, Amy Pond, Other Character(s), The Doctor (11th), The TARDIS, Jack Harkness
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: 100-word Drabbles are an interesting form of fiction, and are hard to write well - here Yamx has written six in which the Doctor and friends interact with various historical and legendary events. In view of the shortness of the chapters I haven't included an extract.
thisbluespirit: (DW - Eight)
[personal profile] thisbluespirit
The Fiftieth anniversary is upon us, and [livejournal.com profile] calufrax is celebrating with some bonus recs - I'm reccing a drabble or brief ficlet for each Doctor in honour of the show's special day. (I will, however, be spreading them out as much as I can over the weekend, so hopefully I won't spam your flists too much - but, after all, there will never be another fiftieth anniversary for the show - something had to be done!)

And so, going through the Doctors in no particular order, let's start now with Eight...

Story: Symbiosis
Author: Calapine
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 443
Author's Summary: He is never alone.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, The TARDIS
Warnings: None.

Recced because: The Doctor and the TARDIS and their unique relationship in a beautiful, terse piece. Where better to start the anniversary but with the Ship and her Thief, travelling together through the vortex?
thisbluespirit: (dw - Eleven reading knitting book)

Story: Deus Ex Liborum (The Circle Has Six Sides)
Author: Glinda
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2672
Author's Summary: The Library contains all possible knowledge. The TARDIS contains all possible time and space. Never the twain should meet.
Characters/Pairings: The TARDIS, Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a gorgeous, wonderfully mysterious, eerie, and beautiful TARDIS POV fic in which the TARDIS battles the Library on behalf of her Doctor and his companion. It explores the two entities, the TARDIS’s relationships with those she carries, and the power of stories and names, and it's an amazing piece.

Excerpt:

Those who created her, had the power to tame stars, to shape time and space to their will. They paid a terrible price for their knowledge, to keep their secrets safe. Safe within their citadel sending their creations and their renegades out among the dreaming stars. Boxes within boxes, knowledge locked one with another like so many Russian dolls. A tiny part of the greater burden shared within each of them, and in each of their creations. She remembers so much that all others have forgotten, if she forgets they will be lost for ever, for good or ill she must remember.

Story: Thermodynamic Stability
Author: Lady_Mercury
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 526
Author's Summary: The stray is in one of the laboratories, mixing things that oughtn’t to be mixed.
Characters/Pairings: Ace, Seven, TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because:

I'm a sucker for Ace and Seven. A lot of fics look at the darker aspects of their relationship/mentor-ship/friendship/whatever it was, and that's fine. I enjoy all of the angles. This fic looks at the lighter side and throws the TARDIS in for good measure. The parallels between the TARDIS's protection of her thief and his strays, and the protection the Doctor shows his companions is a beautiful thing. There is also a very funny and very intentional typo. The TARDIS doesn't get the joke, but I'm sure you will.

Story: From here to infinity
Author: Timesfool
rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3960
Author's Summary: When the Tardis experiences catastrophe and the Doctor disappears, Nyssa is left alone - or is she?
characters/pairings: Nyssa, River Song, Susan Foreman, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (5th), The TARDIS
warnings: None

recced because: There is so little good Nyssa fic out there, and I am thrilled to be able to share this with you. Honestly, who doesn't love Nyssa? In my opinion she is one of the most fascinating characters the show has created, and I'm forever sad that her character was not explored more in the series.

This fic not only does a cracking job at portraying Nyssa's awesomeness, it also throws in some other well-loved characters, resulting in 3000 words of the ultimate timey wimey excitement. I can't be the only one who squeals at the idea of Nyssa meeting River Song, or Susan, or Sexy, or the First Doctor.

It is a story filled to bursting with funny and heartwarming scenes, where the TARDIS is treated as a real character and Nyssa gets a chance to shine. What more could you possibly want?

Hello! It's me again. Although, woefully lacking in Who icons until I pay my membership fees again. T_T This time I thought I'd try and recc something from every Doctor's era, since I have 2 weeks to recc, so... here we go!

Story: Museum Piece
Author: [livejournal.com profile] honeynoir
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 551
Author's Summary: Time Lady Clara and the cantankerous, broken-down Type 40 TARDIS who refuses to be properly repaired. (Doctor/TARDIS)
Characters/Pairings: The TARDIS, Clara Oswin Oswald
Warnings: Spoilers for latest season finale.

Recced because: Ok so I said I'd start One!Era... I sort of did. This is a lovely little piece investigating the lives and times of Clara Oswin Oswald. I took particular interest in this one because as anyone who knows me will tell you, I take particular delight in Gallifreyan History 101, and it's especially interesting to see a character so-well-written that is simultaneously an outcast, and not an outcast (I actually began this with a similar tale about Susan). It's also hilarious, I mean, I giggled out loud on more than one occasion. It's touching, too, and it's nice to see - again - a similar but not similar interaction between the TARDIS and Clara. Also, spot-on characterisation!
[identity profile] saaammie.livejournal.com

Story: Alternatively
Author: Isilien Elenihin
Rating: Adult
Warnings: Explicit sex, swearing
Word Count: 17391
Author's Summary: The TARDIS locks the Ninth Doctor out in modern-day London. While he's investigating a puzzling knot in the Time Lines, he runs into Rose Tyler, who's going back to school to get her A levels. What if there was no 'run?'
Genre: Alternate Universe, Angst, Character Study, Drama, Het, Hurt/Comfort, Introspection, Romance, Standalone
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor/Rose, the TARDIS

Recced because:

This is the first fic this week that I'm not reccing for the sex (though there's absolutely nothing wrong with it ;)). This is an AU where the Doctor ends up stuck in London, and to have something to do he takes a job as a teacher and guess who ends up in his class?

Some of you may recall the uproar a few weeks where Doctor Who was accused of being a racist show. While one may have different opinions on that, I don't think anyone can argue the fact that Doctor Who only rarely examines the problems of gender, race, sexuality, class and general privilege.

Which is why I find fics that delve into the probable realities of Rose's poor, working-class background especially interesting. We know that Jimmy Stone was a rotten egg, but he's especially nasty in this fic (prepare your hankies).  However, Rose's good humor and lust for life really shines through in this fic, and is even more poignant considering how rough her life has been.

Hi!

I'm [livejournal.com profile] saaammie (Cicci Green at Teaspoon), your reccer for these two (!) weeks. It's my second time reccing here at Calufrax and I enjoyed it a lot last time. It feels good to properly reflect on the stories I read, and why I want others to read them.

I'm a Swedish college student (or recent grad, actually), and I've been a Who-fan for about a year now. My favorite companion is Donna and my favorite genre is definitely hurt/comfort. I do enjoy torturing the poor characters.

Why is that, do you think? That hurt/comfort is such a popular genre?

Anyway. On to the first rec:

Story: Belle de Jour
Author: Chase820
Rating: Adult
Warnings: Explicit sex
Word Count: 10551
Author's Summary: After the Madame de Pompadour interlude, Rose realizes that loving the Doctor is a far trickier affair than she thought. What kind of girl must she be, to accept the man he is now? Answering that question will stretch her loyalty--and her sanity--to the breaking point.
Characters/Pairings: Rose/Ten, TARDIS

Recced because: This fic shocked me when I first read it. And I actually didn't like it very much, because it presents such a non-romantisized picture of the Doctor's and Rose's relationship. Partly why we all read fanfiction is to escape reality and dream, I think, and this fic's reality is a slap in the face, a bucket of ice-water.

Which is what makes it so good, of course.
Rose is very very human and young and the Doctor is terrifyingly alien and it can't ever really work out. But they make do. It's a fic about choices and consequences and expectations and fitting together despite it.

Plus it's seriously hot. Bring a fan.

Author's Summary: It's cold outside, but it's warm in the TARDIS – and sometimes a lonely traveler finds a safe place to stay.
Characters/Pairings: A cat, the TARDIS, Nine, Rose, Jack
Warnings: None

Recced because: As I've mentioned several times now, I love outsider views on the Doctor, and also fics that treat the TARDIS as a character in her own right. This is an especially unusual one.

A cat, lost and alone in the cold, finds a friendly blue box who invites her inside and offers her a comfy napping spot. There are also some humans, one of which is really grouchy, but no one takes them too seriously. Oh, look--food!

This story is cute and funny, obviously, but it also presents an interesting view of our heroes, and especially of the TARDIS herself. DameRuth's prose is beautiful, as always. This story never fails to cheer me up.

Story: The Way We Get By
Author: Poetry
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4526
Author's Summary: Somehow, even when they're stranded far from home, they find a way to get by.
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler, The TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is an incredibly compelling story about Nine, Rose and Jack being stranded on an alien planet. That in itself would be pretty standard fare, but what makes this story stand out is the incredible dense world building, the tangible bleakness of the Doctor's helplessness juxtaposed with the steely determination of his companions, and the deep, deep undercurrent of mutual care running through it all. Also, I love fics that handle the TARDIS as a character.

Story: How Iris Wildthyme finally got her man
Author: Lurky Mclurklurk
Rating: All ages/PG
Word Count: 1382
Author's Summary: "Oh, you're joking! The Time Lords were wiped out completely, and the only survivors were me and Iris bloody Wildthyme?"
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Iris Wildthyme, the TARDIS, (Tenth Doctor/Iris Wildthyme)
Warnings: None. (AU for S3.)

Recced because: It’s very funny, and brilliantly done. The Doctor discovers he’s not alone after all, but the sole other survivor of the Time War is - to his dismay - Iris Wildthyme! If you know who Iris is, you’ve probably already hurried off to read after spotting the summary, but if you don’t, don’t worry. Iris is a Time Lord from various spin-offs, whose adventures mirror the Doctor’s in improbable ways, and she’s been chasing him for rather a while – that’s all you need to know to enjoy this story.

Anyway, with some lovely glimpses of the TARDIS’s pov, and lots of gems like the line about the cabbage (no, I’m not explaining) and all the clues just happening to converge in south-east England, it’s a great fic to start the week with. And the ending – the ending is perfect.

Story: Time, Patience (And a Pinch of Hate)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] a_phoenixdragon
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 297
Author's Summary: The God would learn there was no such thing as Mercy.
Characters/Pairings: Other Character(s), River Song, The Doctor (11th), The TARDIS
Warnings: Discussion of death

Recced because: A very short piece, since Is started with a very long one. It is short, sweet, and to the point. It feels a little to me like a shopping list for somebody planning a murder. The structure is interesting (one sentence per paragraph) but that adds to it's charm. The author really gets into the head of the psychopath while making you feel that the villains are clever gits who really don't know what they're doing, and the theme and word repetition is dizzying. I especially love the baking imagery.

Story: Could Be A Little More Sonic
Author: Ravarath
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2207
Characters: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (Duplicate 10th), The TARDIS, The TARDIS
Author's Summary: Ever wondered why the Eleventh Doctor's sonic screwdriver malfunctioned when he first met Amelia Pond? (Slightly spoiler-ish for "The Eleventh Hour.")
Warnings: None
Recced because: I stumbled across this while I was looking for another story (which turned out to have been recced previously), and laughed like a drain when I read it. A nice little explanation for an odd moment in The Eleventh Hour, which harks back to an earlier episode in the Doctor's life, from an author who hasn't been recced on Calufrax before.

It started innocently enough, so innocuous that Rose hardly noticed the difference.

The Doctor's attention had been absorbed by a small pile of alien technology he'd brought home (against regulations) from Torchwood, when he heard a rather loud hiss of frustration from the other room. "Rose?" He called, slipping his glasses off the bridge of his nose. "Everything alright?"

There a muffled answer, followed by an audible sigh. A moment later, Rose strode into his office, irritation clear in her expression. "This bloody flat is gonna be the death of me."

The Doctor sat up straighter, glancing around for the source of her foul mood. He wouldn't purport to be an authority on the quality of flats, but he thought theirs wasn't too shabby at all: two bedrooms, a cozy sitting room, decent bathroom, and a very quaint little kitchen. They were also just a block away from a wonderful row of little shops. What more could a human need?

And now, as promised, for something completely different!

Story: dreamings of meetings
Author: aces
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 4133
Author's Summary: Hex, in “The Settling”: I thought I saw lemon trees in the library…or maybe I dreamt them.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Hex Schofield, The Doctor (7th), The TARDIS
Warnings: None
Recced because: It's hard to describe this story without spoiling it. I suppose I can say that Hex comes aboard the TARDIS, and clever scenes of his getting to know the ship and its inhabitants are alternated with vivid depictions of the mysterious dreams he begins to have. The imagery is gorgeous, the exploration of the TARDIS is lovely, and the atmosphere is wonderfully dreamy.

Story: Countable Infinities
Author: Lady Mercury
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 534
Author's Summary: Amy and Rory have lots of questions about the TARDIS.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Eleventh Doctor, The TARDIS.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I have a weakness for good TARDIS-fic, so here’s another! It’s a clever and well-characterisated look at the nature of the TARDIS and the Doctor (before we’d ever seen The Doctor’s Wife) - and Amy and Rory trying to understand them both, each in their own particular way. It's lovely.

Story: Human Behaviour
Author: st_aurafina
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1690
Author's Summary: The TARDIS learned a lot from her time in a human body; this doesn't mean she knows how to put a human together again.
Characters/Pairings: Idris, The TARDIS, Leela, Nyssa, Tegan Jovanka, Eleventh Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It's a beautiful and fascinating fic that follows on from The Doctor's Wife and explores the relationship between the TARDIS and Idris in a way that’s humorous, painful, and non-linear – and always coming back to the TARDIS with her Thief. In passing, there are some lovely cameos from past companions, especially Ace (and the brief interaction with Seven). It’s well worth a read - and then reading again and again.

Hello, [livejournal.com profile] calufrax! Since I still have power (at least for the moment!) here at the edge of Hurricane Sandy, I figure it's time to post a rec. Story: Doing Time
Author: AstroGirl
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1,005
Author's Summary: The Doctor isn't the only one in exile.
Characters/Pairings:
the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: If the Third Doctor's exile was hard on him, how hard must it have been for the TARDIS, literally born to travel in time and space? AstroGirl weaves elements of "The Doctor's Wife" into this poignant TARDIS character study, examining how the relationship between ship and thief is strained by their mutual grounding. The TARDIS' perspective feels believably alien, but her feelings of longing and loss are universal.

Title: Consummation
Author: Jasper
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 763
Author's Summary: The Doctor thought he understood his relationship with his ship.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Doctor/TARDIS in a way
Warnings: Non-con

Recc'ed Because: A short, dark and strange AU about the Doctor and the TARDIS, and the dark side of their relationship. The premise is sad and a bit scary; that what seems like symbiosis to the Doctor is baser and more manipulative from the TARDIS POV. Despite the asymmetric relationship, the TARDIS still comes across as an extremely powerful being, like someone trying to keep a tiger as a pet.

Author's Summary: Every now and then, her thief stops taking gentle hints.
Characters/Pairings: Peri Brown, The Doctor (6th), The TARDIS
Warnings: General, Humor, Vignette

Recced because: I have a special love for Six. There aren't many who share that love, but those of us that do know where to find our Six!Fix - and this author always delivers. She is highly popular (and oft recced) for a very, very good reason. She KNOWS the Doctors through and through - and Six is no exception. She gets the joke of it all and brings it to the fic-table with a flourish that leaves me dry-mouthed with envy and wanting more despite my jealousy. Her Six is everything we see and then some: dry, brassy, loud, uncompromising, witty and quick-tempered. But he is also THE DOCTOR and she shows that with a humorous pen that has no rival. This is a tale about a Thief and his Blue Box - and how She would like to remain a Blue Box thank-you-very-much. A delightful tongue-in-cheek fiction that shows the Doctor knows more than he reveals and that his Machine knows (and loves him) even better than that. Though...he really needs to ask HER before deciding certain things.

Today, back to the early days of New Who and Team TARDIS.

Story: More Than True
Author:[livejournal.com profile] dameruth
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 8538
Author's Summary: Jack is nominally part of the TARDIS crew now, but how well does he really fit in?
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (9th), The TARDIS
Warnings: Swearing

Reced because: Everyone has their comfort stories, they ones they read and re-read when they need to be reminded why they love this show and these characters. This is one of my personal favourites. I can’t think why this one hasn’t been recced before, except that DameRuth has so many brilliant stories to choose from.

One of my favorite ‘pairings’ in DW is Nine/Rose/Jack, whether as lovers or as friends. And my absolute favorite scenario is Jack’s early days on the TARDIS. DameRuth gives us a Jack Harkness recently arrived on the TARDIS who is still very much a loner and outsider, cynical about everyone’s motives. He is attracted to Rose and intrigued by the Doctor, despite the latter’s “ridiculous claim of being a Time Lord”. When Jack runs into some trouble on an alien world, Rose and the Doctor rush to his aid, and make him question everything he thinks he knows about how the universe works.
